'I am not Sakura,' Shikaoi thought as he found himself face to face with a certain childhood friend of his, Ino Yamanaka.
Shikaoi knows he has no 'inner' to prevent Ino from using her clan's mind jutsu, but he likes to think that he can come up with a plan suited for himself. 'I might not be as smart as Shika-nii, but I think I have the perfect plan,' Shikaoi thought smirking inwardly to himself.
"I won't be going easy on you Aoi-chan," Ino said getting into a ready stance, as the proctor motioned for them to start the match.
Ino took out a kunai, 'she wouldn't,' Shikaoi thought wondering what he had done to make Ino use the same plan she had done with Sakura.
Ino used the blade to cut off her long blond hair.
Now Shikaoi was weirded out and by the sounds in the audience, he wasn't alone in this thought. 'Didn't she cut her hair because Sakura did? Why? What?' Suddenly Shikaoi realizes that she was trying to distract him by doing the unpredictable. Ino knew his brother more than she knew him, so she was trying to use the shock factor caused by cutting off her hair to cause him to overthink and miss the fact she is channelling her chakra into the hair to trap him long enough to use the mind transfer jutsu on him.
Shikaoi decides it is time to put his plan into action quickly making hand signs for the 'shadow possession jutsu' while actually casting a genjutsu and replacing himself with a shadow clone (that he had Naruto teach him) and in a burst of chakra hides in the shadows behind Ino as he waited.
Ino makes her move and traps 'Shikaoi' with her discarded hair.
"I bet you didn't think I could come up with such an ingenious plan Aoi-chan," Ino exclaims proudly before making the signs for the mind transfer jutsu. Just as she was about to make the last hand sign the 'Shikaoi' clone smiled and disperses confusing Ino and the audience except for Shikamaru.
"Aoi replaced himself with a shadow clone, but where did he go?" Naruto asks Sasuke and Shikamaru. Sasuke only lets out a "hn" not wanting to admit that he doesn't know. Shikamaru only smirks in response as he had a good idea of what his brother had planned.
