AN: hey guys I'm back with another one shot for Side Effects Include. I hope you like it. If you notice any inconsistences, please let me know. Don't judge the ending too harshly, I didn't know how to end it. I might go back and change it later. Otherwise, please enjoy.
Shinichi sat on a bench outside of the one of the city's newest addition to its many skyscrapers. The building was unique in that any of the floors could be temporarily rented for events such as a wedding reception, an art exhibit, school prom, or a number of other things. Tonight was the first night that it was to open, and the first company the owner rented to was a jeweler. It was a smart choice, Shinichi admitted, because the jeweler had a fantastic collection to show in an exhibit that was sure to draw in a crowd, but there was a certain person in particular that the show was bond to attract, or more specifically, a certain thief. To the owner's delight, KID had sent out a notice that he would target the jeweler's displayed collection, and wherever KID went, the press followed. The positive press would double as free advertising for the new building and the jeweler didn't need to worry about his collection because KID always returned what he stole.
Yes, it was a well thought out plan indeed.
Inhaling deeply, Shinichi finally stood, stretching his legs. It still felt strange, standing up. The ground seemed so far away! It had been five days since he had regained his original body, and he still wasn't use to it. It didn't help that he was also carrying this new weight around. He turned his head to glare at the backpack he was wearing, the source of the weight. Better get this next part over with, he thought to himself before making his way inside.
The chaos inside was a stark contrast to the peace outside. The task force was running around and yelling instructions to one another. Nobody seemed to notice him, which really was very unprofessional. If they didn't notice him when he was making no obvious moves to hide himself, how were they supposed to catch KID? He shook his dead in disbelieve and made his way to the elevator. The taskforce wasn't his problem. He pushed the button for the roof and waited as it ascended.
Once it arrived, he stepped out and sighed in relief. It felt good to be away from the madness downstairs. He longed to remove the backpack and the long coat he was wearing and just let himself stretch out, but he didn't dare. Instead he pulled the coat around himself more tightly and settled down to wait.
KID's show was due to start in 3 minutes and Shinichi couldn't help but feel anxious. KID knew Conan, he trusted Conan, not Shinichi. Despite his second thoughts Shinichi had made up his mind and decided that he wouldn't stop attending KID heists. Conan had gained KID's trust, so why couldn't he? They were after all the same person, even if KID didn't realize it.
He could tell the moment KID made his entrance downstairs. The noise of the task force reached a crescendo and he could hear KID's laughter echoing even from way up here. He must have installed speakers somewhere, he thought to himself. He wasn't exactly sure which jewel or jewels KID had decided to target, but it hardly mattered. KID would make his way up here in the end. Then they could battle it out.
Now Shinichi didn't intend to actually catch the thief, or at least he didn't intend to turn him over to the police if he succeeded. No after many hours of thought, he had decided that the moonlit thief was harmless. Before his time as Conan, the old Shinichi wouldn't have cared. He would have tried to catch KID regardless, and would have counted it as another success to see him in prison. But after his time as Conan, Shinichi no longer saw things in black and white. So no, new Shinichi did not intend to clip KID's wings. Instead, he just wanted to use him for some innocent stress relief.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard a voice call from behind him, "Detective Kudo Shinichi, I presume?"
Shinichi turned and replied to the thief, "You are correct, and you must be that pesky thief I've heard so much about. I'm going to have to ask you to return the jewel you stole."
KID gave him an impish grin, "make me!"
Shinichi wanted to laugh at the childish response, but instead made a lunge for the phantom. KID easily sidestepped away, which was what Shinichi was hoping for. The thief suddenly and found himself flat on the ground. A net appeared from out of nowhere and flew in the direction of the thief…only to completely overshoot him and fly past him where it fell harmlessly on an air conditioning unit.
"A trip wire? You set up a trip wire!? And I fell for it!?" KID yelled, sounding highly embarrassed. He gestured to the net, "And what the hell is up with that? Epic fail, detective."
The detective simply shrugged, "I knew you wouldn't expect a detective to resort to your style of tricks, so I guessed you would fall for one, and I was right. Although I'm not too experienced with those kinds of things, so I guess I didn't set up the net trap correctly."
KID stood and dusted himself off, "I'll give you points for the creativity and effort, but you lose points on execution. Now if that's your best effort, I think it's about time I took my leave." KID snapped his fingers and suddenly seemed to teleport to the edge of the roof.
Shinichi opened his mouth to reply, but before he could, a shot rang out through the air. He saw KID's pure white jacket turn red before KID disappeared from view as he fell from the roof.
Haibara and Conan sat across from each other in Shinichi's home. Between them sat a small pill bottle with a single tablet inside. Both stared at it as if it was a spider trapped beneath a glass. "So this is it then?" Conan asked.
Haibara nodded, "That's it. I'm sure of it."
"But even though it's the cure, it could still kill me?"
Another nod, "The apotoxin has been in you long enough that trying to cure it could stop your heart."
"I notice there is only one capsule in that bottle," Conan pointed out, although he didn't seem surprised.
"This is what I wanted, a chance to start over, free from the Black Organization. I just didn't expect my second chance to be in this form," she gestured at the child's body she occupied.
Without another word, Conan opened the bottle and swallowed the pill. He might have been imagining it, but it seemed to burn the entire way down. Within a few minutes, he felt a burning heat. It was painful, but he refused to cry out. Sweat began to gather on his forehead and he gritted his teeth as the pain intensified. He began to feel a pressure building in the center of his chest. He started to feel lightheaded.
"You're having a heart attack!" Haibara yelled to him before grabbing a nearby oxygen tank she had prepared.
He felt like he couldn't breathe. His chest ached with the lack of blood to his heart. His vision started to darken around the edges. He felt Haibara slip the oxygen mask over his face. He vaguely noticed that his hands were much larger than they had been just moments ago. So the cure was working, but would he survive long enough to see it fully take affect? How was it even working without his heart pumping blood for him?
Small hands shoved a pill down his throat and he thought of men in black coats and immediately tried to cough it back up. "It's an aspirin, you idiot! Just swallow the damn pill," Haibara yelled at him.
He could tell it was already too late. He felt himself drifting away. His vision was fully gone now and he could barely feel the pain. He found Haibara's hand and gave it a weak squeeze until he couldn't hold on anymore. Then he let go.
Pain flared from his back like nothing he had ever felt before. His eyes flew open in shock and he let out a scream of pain. The pressure in his chest was gone and his vision had returned, but all he could focus on was the fire burning just beneath the skin on his back. The apotoxin was nothing compared to this. He hadn't known real, physical pain until this moment.
He could feel something pushing beneath his back, as if something large was trying to escape from inside him. He screamed one last time as he felt his back rip open. The pressure and the pain were gone. Relief coursed through him and as he fell into unconsciousness.
Shinichi watched with horror as Kaitou KID fell. He was across the roof in seconds. He ripped the coat and backpack off as he threw himself over the edge.
He could see KID below him. KID spread his limbs out, trying to slow his decent. Finally in reach, Shinichi grabbed the thief and pulled him close, holding on to him tightly. KID's back was against his chest, both of their eyes on the ground quickly approaching. KID shouted to him, fighting to be heard over the air rushing past their ears, "What now, detective?"
"Now, I fly us to safety," Shinichi shouted back. Then he spread his large, white wings.
The moonlit thief turned his head and stared before shaking his head, "I must be delirious from blood loss. That, or I have already died, and angels have come to take me away to the afterlife."
Shinichi rolled his eyes, "Don't be so dramatic. From the blood on your clothes, I guess that the bullet hit you in the arm. As long as we get you treatment, you'll be fine."
"So I'm not hallucinating and you really did grow wings and rescue me?" his tone clearly said he didn't believe the detective.
"Well at least I'm trying to rescue you, but I've never really done this before. Oh crap! Flagpole, hold on!" He suddenly veered to the left.
"Oh god, I'm going to die anyway! I'm not going to go splat on the ground, I'm going to go splat against some random office building window!" KID shouted dramatically.
"Just shut up and let me concentrate! We're not going to die! Just shut up!"
KID obediently closed his mouth. He couldn't help but stare at the ground that was too close for comfort. He noticed that they seemed to be dropping lower at a steady rate. So Shinichi didn't plan on landing them on a nearby roof-top, or maybe he couldn't. Now that he thought about it, he could hear Shinichi panting. Was he too heavy for the detective to carry? The problem was that Shinichi couldn't exactly land them in the middle of the street of the city below. It would attract way too much attention.
Finally the detective spotted a nearby park. It was deserted at this time of night and there was a large clear area near a lake. He headed straight for it. Kaito looked at the lake and felt himself pale with the thought of what was swimming beneath the surface, "Shinichi, if you drop me in that lake, I will take you down with me and drown you."
Shinichi gritted his teeth, "I'm not aiming for the lake. I don't think we need to get dirty lake water in your bullet wound."
It was far from a graceful landing, but he did manage to land them both in a patch of grass a short distance from the shore. Upon landing, the momentum carried them forward so that they tumbled over and over each other. Kaito cried out and grabbed his injured arm. He needed to get back home right now and examine his arm. He wasn't even sure if the bullet had gone all the way through or if it was still lodged inside. He could wonder about how Kudo-kun had somehow grown wings later. Part of him still believed he was delirious anyway.
He opened his eyes and turned in the direction of the detective, and whatever he had been about to say was promptly wiped from his memory by the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. Shinichi was kneeling on one knee over him, his pure white wings spread out around him. They seemed to glow in the moonlight and were far larger than he expected. He looked into Shinichi's eyes, is it even possible for eyes to come in that shade of blue? With a start he realized that Shinichi's eyes were filling with tears.
"Kudo-kun, I'm fine, please don't cry, I'll be okay," he quickly tried to reassure the other teen.
"Give me your arm."
"That's not necessary; I'll just go back to my hide out and treat the wound there."
"KID, please. Just trust me," the winged detective pleaded.
Wordlessly, KID held out his arm. Shinichi bowed his head over the wound, just below KID's shoulder, and allowed his tears to fall on it. It didn't make any sense, but the thief could feel the pain leaving his arm. Once the pain was completely gone, he took back his arm and removed his jacket to examine the wound. It was completely gone. The only sign that it had ever been there was the dried blood on his jacket.
"How did you do that?" KID asked in wonder.
Shinichi looked away before answering, "I'm not exactly sure."
"How about," he made a vague gesture at Shinichi's wings, "that?"
Shinichi suddenly stood, "look, I'm glad you're okay, but I really need to go. Please don't tell anyone what you saw." He turned to leave.
The thief stood as well, "Wait, you have to at least give me an explanation!"
"No I don't," Shinichi turned and began to walk away. He was almost at the first line of trees when he felt something hit him from behind. He fell to the ground, wings flailing uselessly. "KID, what the hell, get off of me, let me go!"
KID was on top of Shinichi's calves hugging the detective's knees to his chest in a death grip, "No, you owe me an explanation. Stop smacking me with your wings!"
After another minute or two of struggle, Shinichi finally relaxed in defeat, "Fine, I'll tell you everything I know. Now will you get off of me?"
The thief stood up, "gladly." He reached down his hand and offered it to the detective.
Shinichi took it and was suddenly pulled into KID's chest. He blushed furiously, "don't know your own strength?" He asked sarcastically.
KID was giving him a curious look, "No, you're just a lot lighter than I would have expected. Hang on a second, I want to try something." Shinichi squawked in protest when he found himself being lifted into KID's arms. "You're very light. Are your bones hollow like a bird's?"
"I have no idea, but you can put me down now." He was returned to the ground.
He didn't realize it, but his wings fluffed up behind him, as if he was trying to make himself look bigger. KID smiled, the gesture clearly meant back off. No more touching! It was kind of cute.
Shinichi told KID, "If you really want to have this talk, we need to go somewhere more private. Anyone could see or hear us here. Besides, I need to cover my wings. I'm just not exactly sure how I'm going to get home without anyone seeing me." He thought back to the coat and backpack he had left on the rooftop when he dove to save KID.
"I might be able to assist you there, detective," KID snapped his fingers. He was covered by smoke for a few seconds and when it was cleared, his thief outfit was gone. In his place was a normal looking teen wearing a red pair of devil wings complete with horns and a tail.
"What is that suppose to be?"
"I thought you were supposed to be a detective! Obviously, we are two friends that are walking home from a costume party together. If the two of us are together looking like this, people will jump to the conclusion that your wings are part of a costume. Just try to not to move them. Fake wings don't move much."
He had to admit that it was a good plan.
After a long walk home, Shinichi and KID sat together in his kitchen, both sipping coffee. Or at least Shinichi was. KID was sitting across from him in total shock, his mug of hot chocolate forgotten.
KID finally spoke, "I can't believe that you were Tantei-kun."
Shinichi shrugged, "don't beat yourself up too much. Not many people would even think of the possibility that a child could actually be a teenager that was forced to de-age."
"You really don't know why you grew wings when you took the cure?"
He shook his head, "the one who made the cure for me has run numerous tests. She's taken so many blood samples; I've started calling her 'vampire.' She's taken a feather and examined it. She can't tell me anything about how I have them."
The two sat in another minute of silence. The thief seemed to be mulling something over in his head, probably all of the new information he just received. He was proven wrong when KID told him, "this isn't a mask, by the way." Shinichi gave him a surprised look. "It's my real face. My name is Kuroba Kaito; it's a pleasure to meet you."
Shinichi looked up in surprise, "why are you telling me this?"
Kaito shrugged, "well you trusted me with you secrets, the least I can do is tell you my name. Besides, I trust Conan, or I guess I should say I trust you."
Shinichi's wings twitched and rose a little higher. Kaito noted the gesture and stored it away for future analysis. Shinichi didn't seem to have good control on his wings, and they seemed to express his emotions.
Kaito continued, "In the mean time, I think I might know someone that can help you figure this out."
"Who would that be?" Shinichi questioned.
"She's a witch that goes to school with me. Don't give me that look, if you can be de-aged by a poison and grow wings after taking the cure, than a witch can go to school with me."
The detective nodded. He turned when he heard a knock at the door. Both teens looked at each other in confusion before both stood at once and moved to the door. Kaito produced a coat from out of nowhere and handed it to the detective. Shinichi put it on before answering the door.
A beautiful young woman about Shinichi's age was waiting outside. She said, "good evening. My name is Koizumi Akako. I believe you are in need of my service."
Shinichi turned to Kaito in suspicion. "Don't look at me! I told you she was a witch," Kaito defended.
Shinichi moved to allow her inside, "thank you for coming. Please come in."
The three sat themselves in Shinichi's sitting area. Curiously there were already three steaming mugs of tea waiting for them. Shinichi tried to determine if the beverages came from the magician or the witch, then decided he really didn't care.
Akako seated herself and spoke, "Let's start with the basics and go from there. Kudo-san, do you know what you are?"
"I'm not really sure what you mean, I'm afraid. There are many different ways to your question. I'm a detective, a teenager, a human being-"
Akako interrupted him, "Ah-ah, not quite true on that last one. You are not, in fact, human, but you are actually a nephilim."
Shinichi furrowed his brows in confusion, "I recognize that word from the Christian bible, but I'm not quite familiar with it, I'm afraid."
Kaito spoke for the first time, "I recognize the word from a popular teen fiction book series, but somehow I doubt that's what you are referring too." He shrugged when the detective looked at him in confusion, "What? I enjoy the occasional teen romance book."
Akako cocked her head to the side, "a teen fiction book series? I'm not familiar with the books, but nephilim is the term we use for those that are half-human and half-angel."
Shinichi snorted in disbelief, "So I'm suppose to be half-angel?"
"It might be easier if we explain," said a new voice from behind the door leading into the sitting area.
Everyone turned as one and watched as two new figures entered into the room. Both were female, the one who spoke being the taller of the two and judging from her accent was German. The other woman had olive colored skin and dark hair.
"Ladies, you have arrived just in time, although I wouldn't expect anything different from the two of you," Akako told the new comers.
"Who are you?" Shinichi questioned the new comers, deciding to ignore the fact that they had let themselves into his house without invitation.
"I am Malene, and this is Alyssa," the German told him, "and we can help because we are also nephilim." From out behind there backs came a pair of large wings just like Shinichi's. Malene's were brown like a finch's and Alyssa's were a white-gold.
Alyssa spoke for the first time, "I told you he would need us."
Malene rolled her eyes and took a seat, "I never doubted you for a second. I learned my lesson about that a long time ago." She spoke to the rest of the group, "She's a seer you know." She turned to Akako, "thank you for calling us. Alyssa knew we were needed, she simply didn't know where yet. Without your help, we probably wouldn't have arrived for another weak. Who knows how much trouble he would have gotten into during that time?"
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but could either of you please explain to me what is going on," Shinichi asked.
Malene turned her attention back to Shinichi, "It's just as Akako told you. You are half-angel."
"So God exists? And heaven, and hell, and everything that comes with it?" he sounded skeptical.
Malene shook her head, "I can't tell you that for sure. Yes we are half-angel, but who knows if God exists. I myself have never seen heaven or hell and I have never met God. I've never met anyone that has. What we do know is that beings we call angels once procreated with humans a long time ago. It's been centuries since the last angel has even been seen, but half-angels still walk the earth today. One of your parents must be a nephilim as well."
Shinichi shook his head, "That can't be true. I mean, my parents are pretty strange, but they would have told me something like this."
Alyssa's dark eyes began to glow the same white-gold color as her wings, "Your mother doesn't know what she is. Your grandmother died suddenly at a young age, before she could pass on the information to her daughter, your mother."
Akako nodded in understanding, "Normally, nephilim cannot awaken to their true selves without the help of another nephilim, traditionally the parents. So your mother was never told or awakened to her angelic nature, and she couldn't pass that information onto you."
Shinichi looked confused, "That doesn't explain how I…how I got these. Nobody 'awakened' me." He gestured at the wings on his back.
Alyssa answered, "I believe it was the antidote you were give, or perhaps what happened after. Your heart stopped during your transformation back to Shinichi, but you had a strong will to survive. I believe the drug messed with your system and your will to live awakened your wings for you, but that's just my theory. I only literally see what happens, I don't always understand the how or why."
Shinichi nodded looking exhausted.
Kaito gently rested a hand on Shinichi shoulder, "Perhaps we should end this for tonight. It's very late and I think we could all use a little rest. How about we resume in the morning?"
Shinichi looked like he would rather have his answers, but decided to agree with Kaito, "There are plenty of guest bedrooms that you are all welcome too."
Akako stood, "I shall decline. I am no longer needed here, so I'll return home."
"Wait, Akako," Kaito stood as she got up, "I understand that without your help, Alyssa and Malene wouldn't have arrived when they did. So thank you."
Akako turned with a smile, "I merely came here to confirm something with my own eyes. You don't even realize it, do you my dear thief? Something precious has already been stolen from you and you don't even know. I didn't expect it to happen so soon."
Kaito's smile became strained, "as usual, I have no idea what you are talking about."
Akako left and everyone else went to a bedroom for some much needed rest.
The next day Malene, Alyssa, Shinichi, and Kaito were all seated in the sitting room again. Kaito shuffling a deck of cards, but Shinichi was willing to bet he was close paying attention.
Malene started the conversation, "I think the next step should be teaching you everything you should have learned about being a nephilim. We'll start with how to hide your wings."
"I noticed last night that your wings seemed to appear from behind your back. How did you do that?" the detective questioned.
"We'll show you," both girls stood and turned around showing a clear view of their backs. Both of them wore t-shirts that were missing much of the back giving their wings plenty of room. With a start he realized that both girls' wings were shrinking in size. They shrank from their majestic size to adorably petite wings. Then they seemed to melt into their skin leaving behind tattoo like markings of wings on their back. Once finished both girls turned around, all signs that they had wings were gone.
Kaito had stopped shuffling his cards, "that was amazing."
Malene nodded her head in appreciation, "Thank you. With practice and concentration, you can do it too, Shinichi. Let's practice."
The next couple hours were spent with Malene telling Shinichi to concentrate and to imagine that he was pulling his wings back inside of him. They told him that normally, it took two days of work for a nephilim to be able to hide their wings, but Kaito privately suspected he would have it down by the end of the day. The detective was very good at concentrating after all.
Towards the end of the afternoon, Shinichi surprised everyone by finally pulling it off. Sweat dripped from his forehead, but his work had paid off. His physical wings were gone and were replaced by the same tattoo markings on his back.
"Very impressive," Malene told him. "I think we can move on now."
Alyssa shook her head, "If we continue, he will collapse from exhaustion."
"Then we should break for lunch," Kaito interrupted. He snapped his fingers and a plate of sandwiches appeared on the table.
"How did you do that?" Malene asked in astonishment.
"He's a magician," Alyssa answered. "He has been training since he was very young."
Shinichi looked at Kaito in interest before grabbing a sandwich. He took a bite and let out a noise in appreciation.
Malene chuckled, "I bet you are hungrier then you realized. I'm not surprised. Hiding wings takes a lot of energy when you first learn it, and continuing to hide them takes more energy. You won't be able to hide them permanently; you'll eventually run out of energy. But the more you practice, the longer you can hide them. It's like long distance running. The more you practice, the farther you can run."
The detective nodded, "I'm glad you told me."
They finished their lunch in silence before Shinichi spoke again, "If Alyssa can see the future, may I ask what you can do, Malene?"
"I don't actually have any special gifts, aside from all of the gifts that come with being a nephilim. It's why my wings are so plain. Wing color actually gives others a clue to our abilities," Malene answered.
Shinichi shook his head in confusion, "every time you answer me, I have five more new questions."
Kaito gave him an encouraging smile, "you'll learn eventually. Don't feel bad about asking questions."
Shinichi returned the smile, feeling grateful that Kaito was there. At least he had someone who was just as new to this as he was. He turned back to the other two half-angels, "So what do my wings mean?"
Alyssa answered, "You have the power of purity. It's a very special gift. You must have a pure heart."
Malene took over for Alyssa, "having the gift of purity means you can heal others. You're basically removing foreign bodies, bacteria, viruses, dead tissues, and anything else that is injuring someone. You can also purify water, and you can see into the hearts of others. When you see into someone's heart, you'll be able to see if they are pure or rotten."
"I'm sure that will come in handy when you are working a case," Kaito chimed in, "if someone was murdered, you just have to look into a suspect's heart to find who did it."
"Except I haven't been able to see into anyone's heart. I've only been able to heal people with my tears. I've never tried purifying water," Shinichi replied.
"Your full abilities will come with time, but you also need to understand that you won't always be able to heal everyone. Some injuries will be too extensive for you to heal, and certain diseases too. Cancer patients, depending on how far the cancer has spread, kidney failure when too much of the kidney has already shut down. Some people you won't be able to heal, but you can still take their pain for them so that they may pass peacefully." Malene said.
Kaito said, "You mentioned that you don't have any abilities beyond the normal gifts of a nephilim. Aside from having wings and being able to fly, do nephilim have other gifts?"
The half-angel suddenly looked melancholy, "there is one gift that every half-angel shares, and that's immortality."
It was awhile before anyone spoke. Shinichi finally broke the silence, "If I'm forced to watch everyone around me age and die while I remain the same, that's not a gift. That's a curse."
Malene gave him a sympathetic look, "Many Nephilim share that feeling. Half-angels don't age once their body reaches adulthood, your body has most likely already reached that point, but they can still be killed. We are a little harder to kill than a human; for example you would have to lose much more blood than a human in order to die from blood loss, and I have never heard of a nephilim dying from illness or disease. We can last longer in temperature extremes and we can go far longer without food, water, or even oxygen than a human. So long as you take care of yourself, you will never die."
Alyssa spoke, "You won't really be alone. There are other nephilim out there, although our numbers are diminishing considerably."
"Why is that?" Kaito asked.
"Suicide," Malene answered, "most nephilim eventually commit suicide."
Alyssa took Malene's hand, "I found Malene when I saw a vision of her stabbing herself in the heart. I tracked her down and managed to stop her before she committed the act. We've been together ever since."
"So we have been together for…what, the last 220 years?" Malene asked.
"221 next month," Alyssa replied.
"Ich liebe dich," Malene told Alyssa.*
"I love you too," she replied.
Malene turned back to Shinichi, "You also must be careful to keep your wings a secret. Bad things happen when humans find out about us. You may encounter hunters, cult leaders, religious extremists, or the average insane person, just to name a few."
Kaito thought about a certain sniper that was searching for a jewel that granted immortality. What would he do if he knew nephilim existed?
Shinichi remained quiet trying to digest the new information. Kaito wished they could have some privacy. Shinichi was obviously not okay right now. His wings were hanging low behind him. Alyssa seemed to pick up on his mood. She laid her hand over Malene's and gestured. Both girls stood and made some excuse about wanting to see the garden out back, leaving the detective and thief alone together.
Kaito took Shinichi's hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze, "hey, you okay?"
The winged teen let out a shaky sigh, "Not really. Everyone I know is going to age and die someday, without me. I'll constantly have to move from place to place because people will begin to notice when I stay looking like a young adult forever. I'll have to give up on solving cases for the police because it will put me in the news too much. I'll never be able to find someone special and settle down and grow old with them."
Kaito reached an arm around Shinichi and pulled the smaller teen closer to him. He wrapped his other arm around the detective and held him. The gentle touches were too much for the winged teen and hot tears began to roll down his face. Shinichi buried his face in Kaito's shoulder and silently cried. A ripping noise was heard as Shinichi's wings emerged and circled around the two of them, shielding them from view. Kaito simply held him tighter, wishing he could do more.
Finally Shinichi's tears began to slow and he felt himself drifting off from exhaustion.
The final thing that the two female Nephilim had to teach Shinichi was how to fly. Kaito joined them on his glider for that lesson.
"Stop flapping your wings so much and glide on the thermals. You'll tire yourself out, otherwise. Flap when you need to gain altitude. Flatten your wings to your body and dive when you need speed. Always be on the look out for planes, helicopters, duck hunters, bird watchers, or anyone with binoculars," Malene instructed.
The winged teen nodded, "Got it."
"And don't forget to have fun!" Kaito shouted to him.
Malene smiled in agreement, "Shinichi, why don't you take Kaito flying with you?"
The detective frowned in confusion, "The last time I tried to fly with him, we were barely able to stay in the air. I think he's too heavy."
Kaito feigned hurt, "Are you calling me fat, Shinichi?"
Alyssa interrupted, "your wings just aren't use to doing so much work. You just need to train them like any other muscle."
"Don't forget I was also wearing my glider that night too, plus all of my props that I had in my, uh, my uniform. Those probably weighed me down a bit," Kaito said.
"I'm already aware of your identity, Kuroba," Alyssa told the thief.
"Right, forgot about that seer thing," Kaito grumbled.
Malene laughed, "Don't feel so bad. You can't hide much from her. You can, however, trust her to keep your secret. Just as long as your other persona continues being relatively harmless."
Both boys gave the two girls grateful smiles.
"So how about giving your friend that ride?" Malene asked.
Shinichi hesitated, "Maybe once I'm more comfortable flying on my own. I'm still getting the hang of this myself."
The other two Nephilim shrugged in acceptance.
After another hour of practice, the four landed in a nearby clearing. Kaito produced a picnic basket from seemingly nowhere and spread a blanket out for everyone to sit on. He handed an exhausted Shinichi a bottle of water, then began unpacking bento boxes. Everyone nodded in thanks before they ate.
"The picnic was a great idea Kaito, otherwise I'm not sure Shinichi would have had the energy to fly home after his lesson," Malene told the thief.
Kaito shrugged, "if he hadn't, it would have been my turn to carry him. My glider can't normally carry two full grown men, but Shinichi is so light, I'm sure we could manage."
Malene nodded, "So you noticed that his bones are hollow. You don't have to worry about them being fragile though, they are just as tough as human bones."
Shinichi nodded, "That's good." He focused and brought his large, white wings back into his body the way Malene had taught him, leaving the tattoo like markings to peak out from the holes he had cut into his shirt.
Alyssa smiled at him, "I had seen that you would quickly catch onto hiding your wings, but part of me didn't believe it. If is very impressive how quickly you are learning."
Shinichi felt himself flush at the praise, "I just want to learn how to hide them as quickly as possible so I can go back out in public again without wearing those long coats."
Kaito hummed in agreement, "I agree, those dreadful coats also hid that gorgeous body of yours." He winked at the detective.
The flush from earlier turned into a full tomato red blush, "D-don't say things like that to me!"
Kaito played ignorant and cocked his head to the side in confusion, "but why not? I speak the truth."
The detective stuttered some more and the two argued back and forth until Malene started to laugh. Both boys turned and looked at her in confusion. "I'm sorry, its just fun to watch such good friends interact together. You two are obviously close," she answered before going back to her bento. Everyone else followed her example.
Shinichi's mind was far from his food, however. Malene's words echoed through his head. She called him and Kaito good friends, but they had only officially met two days ago. It felt like a lifetime ago. Thinking about it now, Shinichi had to agree with Malene. A lot had happened in those two days and Shinichi felt like he and Kaito were really close now. He couldn't imagine going through this without the magician at his side. His previous rivalry/friendship with a certain moonlit magician while he was still Conan also aided in that.
Kaito turned when he felt eyes on him and saw Shinichi looking at him. "Do I have something on my face or something?" he asked. Shinichi smiled at him and Kaito felt his breath catch in his throat.
"No, I was just lost in thought. Sorry if I was staring," he answered.
Kaito was unable to answer, so he simply nodded. He turned away when he felt his own cheeks coloring.
"Thank you for hosting us, Shinichi, but Malene and I need to take our leave. I can see that we are needed in Brazil," Alyssa told the detective.
"Thank you both for all of your help. You are more than welcome back whenever you would like to visit," Shinichi replied.
Malene said, "Don't worry, you'll see us again eventually. We nephilim like to check up on each other every couple decades. Don't be surprised if any other nephilim drop by either. We are naturally curious about each other and it's been a long time since a new half-angel was born."
"Since we are immortal and we don't age, we don't have the pressure to procreate during a certain period of our lives the way humans do," Alyssa told him.
"I'll be on the lookout for any other nephilim then. Thank you, for everything," Shinichi said.
They gave a final wave before both females left.
Shinichi turned back Kaito. "Kaito, now that they are gone, I was wondering if we could finish your talk, the one we had a couple nights ago after your heist. Could you tell me more about the shooting at your last KID heist?"
Kaito's expression darkened, "I knew I would have to tell you eventually, although I would prefer to keep you out of it. It would be safer for you if you aren't involved." The two sat down and Kaito explained about his father's murder and Snake.
"So you are searching for a specific gem that glows red in moonlight, but why would this Snake character want this gem?" Shinichi asked.
"Because of the legend that the gem will grant immortality. A gem as great and as frightening as that should not fall into the wrong hands, like Snake's," Kaito answered. "Once I find the gem, I plan on destroying it."
Shinichi leaned back in thought before finally wondering aloud, "I wonder if Snake is part of the Black Organization that drugged me, or at least a branch of it."
Kaito shrugged, "From what you told me about them, it's possible."
"In that case things are worse than I thought," Shinichi replied, "Kudo Shinichi is dead, or at least that's what they think. There's a high chance that Snake saw me that night, if he didn't immediately leave after shooting you."
Kaito paled, "If he saw you that night, he could have seen you fly to rescue me too."
The detective nodded and stood, "I need to consult a friend about this."
Kaito stood as well, "You aren't going without me."
"I'm not sure that's such a good idea," he trailed off.
The magician gave him a firm look, "I'm not leaving your side."
Shinichi looked touched and maybe a little embarrassed, "Don't just say things like that. Fine, you can come with me, even though we are just going next door."
Kaito looked confused for a moment, "But next door are just your neighbors, that crazy scientist guy and that little girl that Conan hung out with."
"That little girl, Haibara, she's like me, well without the wings at least. She isn't actually a little girl," Shinichi told him.
"I should have guessed."
"There's one more thing you should know about her before you meet her. She used to be part of the Black Org. But she's changed now, for the better. She wants to take them down just as badly as I do," Shinichi told him, a little nervous for his reaction.
Kaito took a moment to process that new piece of information before he told the detective, "If you trust her, then I trust her. People can change. I suppose she deserves a second chance."
Shinichi sighed in relief.
The two made their way next door and were greeted by the small scientist and she ushered them inside. "It's okay Haibara, you can trust this guy. His name is Kuroba Kaito is his name. He's a friend of mine," Shinichi told her.
"How much does he know?" she asked.
"Basically everything," Shinichi replied before he allowed his wings out from their hiding.
"I was wondering where your wings went, but I didn't want to ask anything in front of your friend. How did you do that just now?" she asked curiously.
Shinichi went into a very brief explanation on everything that had happened in the past few days. He left out the part about Kaito being KID, but Haibara would most likely figure it out on her own eventually.
"I reject the idea of angels as in heavenly warriors doing God's work, but I can get behind the story that angels are merely another species with wings, perhaps a mutation of humans that happened long ago. So my drug didn't cause you to grow wings, it wakened them. I suppose I should stop trying to find a cure that would get rid of them, seeing as they are a part of you," Haibara said.
"There's something else. We need to ask you something about the Black Organization," Shinichi said.
Kaito continued, "Have you heard of a member that calls himself Snake?"
Haibara nodded, "He isn't a full member, but more part of a sister branch of the organization. His mission was to search legends and myths for more ways for the organization to gain power. The last I heard about him, he was stalking some legend of a gem."
Shinichi nodded grimly, "I was hoping you wouldn't say that. There's a good chance that Snake saw me a couple nights ago."
Haibara's eyes widened, "If he saw you, he would have alerted the rest of the organization by now."
"Then we will just have to move forward with the next phase of my plan sooner than we expected. We'll catch every member before they have time to find me," Shinichi replied.
"You can't go back home. It's too risky," the small scientist told him.
"He can stay at my place," Kaito spoke up.
Shinichi turned to the magician in surprise, "Thank you, but I couldn't stay at your house, I would put you in danger too."
"I'm involved in this too, and you are forgetting who you are dealing with," he flashed a ghost of a KID grin, "you'll probably be safer with me then you would at most other places."
The detective gave him a grateful nod, "Thank you. We should leave tonight then."
The two males left the professors house and made a quick trip back to Shinichi's house for some supplies. Kaito grabbed Shinichi a suitcase of clothes, while Shinichi grabbed any notes or files he had collected about the Black Organization. He then followed Kaito to the train station and both boarded a train heading to Ekoda.
"Are you sure it's okay for me to stay with you?" Shinichi asked uncertainly.
"I already told you that it's okay," Kaito replied. He slipped his arm around Shinichi's shoulder, "Besides, I'm worried that someone from the organization will figure out what you are. They seem pretty obsessed with immortally."
Shinichi's stomach did a little flip flop in his abdomen, but didn't remove Kaito's arm from his shoulder. The two sat in silence for the rest of the trip that way.
Once they arrived at their destination, it was a short walk to Kaito's house. His mother was out of town for the next two weeks so they had the place to themselves. Once inside, Shinichi sat down at the table and began working on his plan to catch the organization. He busied himself making numerous phone calls and made notes. It was almost midnight before Shinichi finally set his phone down and closed his notebook.
"That's it for tonight. Everyone that will play a part in the take down has been brought up to speed. Tomorrow, we will set everything in motion. By the end of the day tomorrow, the Black Organization will be brought down," Shinichi told Kaito.
The magician raised his eyebrows in surprise, "I didn't expect this to move so quickly."
"It's not going as fast as it seems. I actually finished these plans months ago while I was still Conan. I was simply waiting for the right moment to execute my plan. The plan itself took weeks to form, and the plan was the result of months' worth of finding information on them," Shinichi replied.
Kaito nodded, "I expect tomorrow we have a big day ahead of us. I'll show you the guest bedroom."
"Thanks, but I'm so fired up I'm not even sure I could sleep."
"I could hit you with some sleeping gas," Kaito teased as they both made their way upstairs.
Shinichi laughed, "I changed my mind, I'll manage."
Shinichi fell back into the wall behind him with a cry of pain.
"How are you still alive?" Gin demanded while towered above him.
The day had started smoothly enough. Shinichi had made his way back to the station in Beika where he had talked finalized any last-minute plans over with the police. Then they had put his plan into action. Phone calls started rolling in as officers from all over the world were calling in confirming that they had captured their targeted members. Shinichi put on a vest and he along with a group of officers made their way to a seemingly abandoned office building where it was said that the higher up members had made base. The teen detective knew that Gin would be there for sure.
Once inside, everyone had split up and searched the building. That was when Gin had found him.
"I asked you a question, how are you still alive?" Gin sent a kick at Shinichi abdomen. The kick connected and Shinichi let out a grunt of pain. A ripping noise was heard as he wings suddenly shredded his shirt and revealed themselves. Gin's eyes widened, "those wings! You're a nephilim. So Snake was telling the truth."
Shinichi looked for something to defend himself with. Gin reached out and grabbed the detective by the neck and lifted him in the air till the toes of his shoes were barely brushing the ground. His other hand punched Shinichi in the abdomen again. The repeated abuse to the same area made itself known and the detective coughed blood. "I'm going to take you back with me and use you to find the secrets to immortality. Once I figure it out, the organization will be rebuilt. Then I will have fun seeing just how immortal you really are. I've never killed a half-angel before. I think it would be quite exciting," Gin mocked the detective.
Shinichi looked up and smirked at the killer, "The only place you are going is jail where you can rot. Anytime now, KID."
Gin barely had time to turn and Kaito suddenly appeared behind him, dressed in his KID uniform, and shot of his face with gas. Gin instantly fell unconscious, loosing his grip on Shinichi as he fell.
Shinichi stumbled a little, but Kaito was there to catch him. Kaito held him at arms length and inspected the damage done to the detective. Bruises were already beginning to form on his neck, and there was a trail of blood falling from the corner of his mouth. His back most likely had more bruises from when it connected with the wall and his abdomen did for sure.
Kaito gave Shinichi a disapproving look, "I told you I didn't like the idea of using you as bait."
The other teen gave him a weak smile, "It was the only way to make sure we got him. Besides, it worked."
Kaito clenched his jaw before he wrapped his arms around the detective. After a moment, Shinichi returned the embrace. "I'm glad you're okay," Kaito told him. He pulled back and just looked at the other teen, and Shinichi's heart began to race. They were standing so close and Kaito was looking at him strangely. Kaito held him like that and Shinichi could tell he was mulling something over before he finally pulled back and turned back the way he had come. "You had better hide your wings before someone finds us," Kaito told him.
Shinichi nodded, feeling a touch disappointed, although he wasn't sure why. It had to be the case, it was messing with his head or his emotions somehow. He wasn't thinking properly. That had to be the explanation. He retracted his wings back inside of himself and slapped a pair of cuffs onto Gin's unconscious form. "He's a bit tall, but I think one of us could still carry him back to the nearest squad car," he said.
Kaito made a face, "Can't we just kick him in the direction we want to go? The bastard doesn't deserve to be carried."
The two were saved from the hassle when two other officers showed up and offered to take the criminal away. They gratefully accepted and then both went off in search of the officer leading the investigation.
"With these last few guys caught, that makes almost everyone in the organization accounted for. A few members did manage to elude us, but they were mostly middle or low ranking members that just got lucky. Except for one member," the officer flipped a couple pages in the file he was carrying, "the member that goes by 'Snake' managed to wound two officers before escaping. His whereabouts are currently unknown."
Out of the corner of his eye, Shinichi saw KID clench his fists and the detective felt a wave of guilt wash over him. His plan had failed.
The officer turned to KID, "I was told that if it wasn't for you, that Kudo could have been seriously injured. Thank you for your help. You are, however, still a thief and an internationally wanted criminal, so I'm going to have to place you under arrest. I'll do that just as soon as I check on all of my men. So don't go anywhere," the officer gave KID a little smile before leaving.
Shinichi turned to KID in mild disbelief, but Kaito merely shrugged. "What can I say? People love me!" he answered. The smile dropped a little, "I better disappear."
Something in Shinichi's chest tightened, but he nodded in agreement. KID threw down a smoke bomb and was gone.
It a couple hours later before Shinichi finally arrived back at his home. He toed off his shoes with a sigh. The house felt so empty without Kaito's presence. Shinichi wished he would have stayed, but why would he? There was no reason for him to stay since the case was mostly finished and besides, he was probably angry with Shinichi for letting Snake escape.
He needed coffee. It was beyond to late for caffeine, but he didn't care. He needed coffee. He made his was into the kitchen.
"Welcome back!" Kaito greeted him from in the kitchen.
Shinichi stared in disbelief. "Kaito? What are you doing here?" he asked.
"Well, I made us both a small dinner since neither of us has eaten since early this morning, or technically yesterday morning by this point. I also made us both some tea, decaffeinated of course, and don't you dare complain," Kaito lectured sounding a bit like Ran.
"No, I meant why you are here at my house? I figured you would have gone home by now. I mean, aren't you mad at me?"
Kaito looked confused, "Mad at you, for what?"
"For not catching Snake!"
Kaito gently set down the plates he had been placing at the table. He gave Shinichi his full attention, wanting to make sure the detective fully understood him, "I'm upset that Snake got away, but I'm not upset with you. Snake escaping was hardly your fault. Besides, we'll get another opportunity. Snake will take KID's heists as a personal offense and will try to target me again. Next time, we'll be prepared for it."
Shinichi swallowed thickly and agreed. He didn't like the idea of KID being targeted again, but next time he would be prepared. He wouldn't allow Kaito to be hurt again. Both sat down to the simple dinner Kaito had prepared and began to eat. They were lost in thought before Shinichi broke the silence, "You know you can stay here if you want. I mean…you know…if you want to." He broke off and felt himself blush.
Kaito looked up from his plate with a smile, "Thanks. You inviting me will make things less awkward. I might have already moved in my stuff to one of the rooms upstairs. I also may or may not have used another one of the spare rooms as my workshop for my KID items. And my doves might be in the attic with a window partially open from them to come and go as they please."
Shinichi stared before he began to laugh. The tight feeling in his chest vanished.
"So Shin-chan-"
"Do not call me that," Shinichi interrupted.
Kaito stuck out his lip in a pout.
"You were saying something?" Shinichi pressed.
Kaito continued, "I was thinking that after everything that has happened in the past few days, we deserve a break. How about we go out today? Have lunch somewhere and relax?"
Shinichi tried in vain to slow his speeding heart. He doesn't mean like a date. Don't get excited. Why would I want it to be a date anyway? "Sure, sounds like fun. Where would you like to go?"
The next few hours were spent with Kaito dragging Shinichi everywhere within walking distance. They jumped from place to place starting at a local arcade (Kaito forced him to play some sort of dance revolution game with him), moving onto the park (Kaito somehow started a game of ultimate Frisbee that got nearly the entire park involved), riding go-carts (Kaito messed with his behind the worker's back and somehow programmed it to go much faster than normal. They were now banned.), and finally had ended at some nearby café for lunch.
"Hello, my name is Yuki and I will be your waitress for today," a smiling girl in an apron told them. "Oh wow, I love your tattoo. That looks fantastic," she told Shinichi.
The detective self-consciously leaned back in his booth hiding his tattoos. Kaito had insisted that he wear a shirt with a low back in case he needed to find somewhere private to release his wings. Both remembered that Malene had warned him that he wouldn't be able to continuously hide his wings, and both suspected that was why his wings had come out during his show down with Gin.
The waitress took their order and left. Shinichi jumped when he felt a hand rest on top of his. It was Kaito, or course, "You don't have anything to be self-conscious about. Your wing marks look very good on you. I caught quite a few men and women drooling when they caught site of your back."
"They wouldn't be reacting that way if they knew what freaky secret they really hid," Shinichi half joked.
Kaito gave his hand a squeeze, "Don't say that, even if it is a joke. I think your wings are beautiful."
His cheeks turned pink, "you do?"
Kaito gave him a sincere smile, "Absolutely."
The waitress returned with their order and Kaito let go of Shinichi's hand like it was completely ordinary, as if he held his friends' hands all the time. Maybe he did, Shinichi didn't really know him that well now that he thought about it.
They had both finished their meal and Kaito had ordered himself a massive slice of cake while Shinichi got a coffee and a couple sugar cookies. The waitress brought out Kaito's cake when she gave a small gasp of surprise. The corner of the plate was chipped and the waitress hadn't noticed. She cut her finger on the sharp edge of the chipped plate. The wound was shallow, but Shinichi watched as blood began to escape the wound.
Suddenly he felt his eyes fill with tears. He tried in vain to stop them, but they rolled down his cheeks despite his best efforts. The waitress wrapped a napkin around her finger and turned to Shinichi in surprise. "Are you okay, sir? It's only a small cut, I assure you I will be fine," she tried to reassure him.
Kaito's expression turned to one of understanding before he smoothly lied to the waitress, "Oh don't mind him, he just gets a little emotional sometimes, don't you Shinichi?"
Not knowing what else to do, the detective was forced to play along, "It's just so sad when bad things happen to good people."
The waitress smiled, although her eyes clearly told Shinichi that she thought he was crazy, "You're sweet. You two enjoy your meal. You can take care of this whenever you are ready," she set the check down between them and left.
Once she was gone, Kaito turned back to Shinichi and whispered, "Can you stop trying to heal her?"
"I'm trying!" Shinichi hissed back, "I can't control it." Shinichi felt his phone in his pocket begin to vibrate. He answered it.
"Hello Shinichi, this is Alyssa. If what I saw was correct, you are in need of some advice," the voice at the end of the phone said.
Shinichi tried to stop the tears by holding tissues to his eyes. They quickly became soaked. "Yes, a waitress cut her finger, but it's just a small wound and I can't heal her here. How do I stop my healing?"
"You just have to focus the same way you did when learning to retract your wings. You won't gain instant control though, so for short-term you will either have to heal the wound, or gain some distance between you and the wounded. I'm not sure how much distance you will need, but once you are far enough from the wounded, your powers will no longer react."
"Thanks," Shinichi told her before telling her a quick good-bye and ending the call.
Kaito stood and quickly paid the bill, leaving the waitress a generous tip, and both left.
Both walked a block before the tears finally stopped pouring down Shinichi's face. "Better now?" Kaito asked.
"Better," Shinichi said.
Kaito snorted, and then started laughing. Shinichi crossed his arms and glared. Kaito struggled to control his laughter, but was failing. "I'm sorry, it's just so funny! 'It's so sad when bad things happen to good people.' And the waitresses face! She thought you were insane!" Kaito answered between laughter.
Shinichi playfully punched his arm, but he couldn't help but smile.
The two decided to head back home after that.
The moment they both entered the Kudo residence, a voice screeched from nowhere and Shinichi felt two arms circle around him from behind and pull him into a bone-crushing hug. "Shin-chan! When did you get a tattoo? It looks so sexy on you!"
"Mom?" Shinichi yelled in disbelief at the sight of his mother.
"Let him breathe, dear. I think his face is turning blue," his father said as he took a seat across from the two teens. Yukiko gave her son a kiss on the cheek before she sat herself next to her husband.
"When did you two get here?" Shinichi questioned.
"We arrived just this morning. We saw on the news that you had finally taken down that organization and we thought we would come home and surprise you to congratulate you," his mother answered.
"So why don't you catch us up?" his father asked.
Shinichi exchanged a look with Kaito. "Actually, I'm glad you're here. There's something I need to tell you guys…or maybe I should just show you," Shinichi told them. Kaito glanced at him out of the corner of his eye but didn't say anything, trusting that Shinichi could handle it.
Shinichi brought out his wings. After that the next few minutes he and Kaito spent trying to convince them that they were real. It didn't take quite as long as Kaito would have expected it too. Shinichi gave a quick explanation on how he got them and how he was a Nephilim.
"That doesn't make any sense though, if I were a Nephilim, I wouldn't age," Yukiko said. "While I do look younger then I actually am, I don't look like I'm still in my early 20s."
Shinichi frowned, "I've been thinking about that, and I think it's because your wings haven't been brought out. You're living as a human."
Yuusaku turned to his wife, "Is that something you would like to change?"
Yukiko turned to her husband, "No, I wouldn't. Not if it meant I would stop aging. I would rather be able to stay by your side."
Instead of responding, he kissed her on the cheek. He then turned back to Shinichi, "Do you know what you will do next?"
Shinichi sighed, "I would like to stay here for as many years as I can, and after that I will travel the world I guess. As Conan I learned how to solve cases without letting the media know I was the one doing the solving, I could still do that. Or I could help people with my healing abilities."
Kaito gave him a smile, "I'll be right there with you."
The detective returned the smile. If he had been paying attention, he would have noticed the gleam in his mother's eyes.
After that the Kudo's retired to their bedroom. Shinichi told Kaito, "You know, when we are traveling, we could also search for Pandora. You've already gone through so many gems in Japan, it likely that it's not even here."
Kaito grinned, "I would like that. We could team up and search together. It would be like I had a guardian angel watching over me."
Shinichi's cheeks colored, "Don't tease me."
Kaito laughed and leaned back against the couch, wrapping his arm around Shinichi's shoulder as he did. "Shinichi, I've been wondering…" he trailed off.
"Yes?" Shinichi prompted.
"May I touch your wings?" Kaito gave him a hopeful look.
"Uh…sure, why not?" Shinichi leaned forward and Kaito removed his arm giving the detective's wings room to reveal themselves.
Kaito stared in awe before slowly reaching out a hand and petting the inside of one of the wings. "So soft," he said in wonder.
Shinichi felt his eyelids flutter shut. Nobody had touched his wings, aside from Haibara when she took a feather sample. He never would have guessed how sensitive they were. He stretched his wing out, giving Kaito full access.
"I would have expected your wings to be more in the shape of a dove's, but they aren't. They're actually more like a hawk's or a falcon's," the magician said with interest.
Shinichi hummed in answer. Kaito's fingers started moving closer to the spot where wing met back, and he scooted closer to the other teen so Kaito could reach better.
Kaito chuckled and pulled Shinichi into his lap. The detective's eyes shot open when he felt what Kaito was doing, "What are you doing?" He tried to squirm away, but Kaito gently held him in place.
"This is easier," Kaito smiled innocently up at him.
Shinichi frowned but didn't try to move. Kaito was running his fingers up and down both of his wings, sometimes allowing his fingers to brush Shinichi's back, and dammit it felt good. He also would have been lying if he said that he wasn't enjoying sitting in Kaito's lap. He might have a pure heart, but he had a filthy mind.
Kaito looked up from Shinichi's wings and made eye contact with the detective.
'He has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen,' he thought to himself. Kaito was leaning closer. 'Is he going to kiss me?' Now Kaito was really close. His arms wrapped around Shinichi's middle. Shinichi closed his eyes and tilted his head, and Kaito was kissing him.
Too soon Kaito was pulling away. "Was that okay?" Kaito asked.
Shinichi's lips tingled and his heart was beating so hard, he thought it would burst from his chest. He licked his lips and Kaito followed the movement. "Yeah, yeah that was okay. More than okay actually," he said.
Kaito gave a breath taking smile, "Good, because I plan on doing it again"
Suddenly Kaito was kissing him again. Kaito's hands gripped him a little tighter and Shinichi let out a small moan in response. They pulled back from each other.
"I've wanted to do that for a very long time," Kaito told him.
"But you only met me a few days ago," Shinichi told him.
Kaito smiled in response, "But I've known you as Conan for a very long time. Not that I was attracted to a child, but I think part of me knew that Conan had to be more then he seemed. Now that I know you as Kudo Shinichi, those feelings I felt towards you before have turned to something deeper."
Shinichi was fully blushing now, "Oh that's good. Because I, uh, I feel the same way." He turned away in a poor attempt to hide the blush creeping from the tips of his ears down his neck.
Kaito just laughed and ruffled Shinichi's hair, "I'm glad."
Within the next few days, Shinichi finally learned how to control his healing powers. It was a relief that he could leave the house and not worry that he would suddenly burst into tears the next time someone got a paper cut, or worse.
It was then that his other ability finally revealed itself. They had been grabbing take out when a man collapsed. An ambulance was called and it was discovered that he had been poisoned. Shinichi looked around at everyone in the small restaurant, and suddenly it was like he could see for the first time. Everyone around him had either a light or a darkness right over their heart. The brightness and darkness varied from person to person.
Shinichi turned to Kaito to comment about it, but when he saw Kaito he had to quickly turn away. Kaito's heart was such a pure white, it was blinding. It might have been the most beautiful thing he had seen if he wasn't afraid it would burn out his retinas.
With his head turned from Kaito, he saw someone with a heart that was blacker than anybody else's. It was a man that was standing towards the back of the crowd. Shinichi reached his hand behind him and bumped Kaito's to get his attention. Kaito followed his gaze, "Is that our poisoner?"
Shinichi nodded, "His heart is completely black. He must be the culprit. A heart that dark must be capable of murder. Or perhaps his heart turned dark after the crime. Either way, I'm sure it was him."
Soon after that the police arrived. Shinichi knew he couldn't accuse the culprit without proof, so he was forced to hide his knowledge and feign ignorance to the identity of the poisoner until after he had gathered evidence. It didn't take that long and soon the man was being led away in cuffs.
Shinichi braced himself and turned back to Kaito. Now that he was expecting it, Kaito's heart didn't seem so blinding. Still it was bright. Kaito frowned at him, "What is it?"
Shinichi shook his head, "You're going to have to do something about your bright heart before it gives me a migraine. Can't you steal a child's candy or something?"
Kaito gave Shinichi a shadow of his KID grin, "You mean my heart is still pure after all of the torture I've put Hakuba through?"
Shinichi grinned in return, "I guess that's further proof that your pranks are harmless fun. Too bad you can't prove it."
The two began the walk home with there take out, which unfortunately had gone cold while waiting for Shinichi to wrap up the case. "I'm sure if you concentrated, you could probably turn off your new vision ability thing, just like you can control your healing tears," Kaito offered.
The detective thought about it, "I'll continue using it. It could come in handy and if I use it long enough, I'll grow use to it."
Shinichi noticed a woman walking up ahead of them. A man was walking in the opposite direction and the two collided. The man swiftly apologized before both continued walking, but Shinichi noticed that the man's heart, which had previously been dark, had only grown darker after the two had collided. The detective leaned over to Kaito and whispered in his ear, "I think that the man walking toward us just took that woman's wallet when they collided."
Kaito nodded, "Leave it to me." The magician pulled out some objects from nowhere and began to juggle. Shinichi noticed that his juggling materials were different kinds of fruit. Once the man grew closer to them Kaito pretended to fumble and dropped all of the fruit, some of them hitting the man. An apple bounced off of the man's head and some strawberries landed on his shirt, leaving behind a pink stain.
"Oh I am so sorry how terribly clumsy of me!" Kaito exclaimed. He grabbed the man by the shoulders and inspected him. "Are you injured? Oh dear, me and my butter fingers."
"Let go of me, I'm fine," the pick-pocket growled.
"No, no that won't do. Let me fix you up," he produced a handkerchief with a flourish and began to dab at the man's shirt. Instead of wiping up the strawberry stain, it left behind green stains. "Whoops, wrong handkerchief!" Kaito exclaimed gleefully.
"You're making it worse! Let me go," the man continued to struggle.
The two struggled with another for a moment longer, Kaito fumbling and letting out the occasional, "Oh dear, terribly sorry," while the man growled at him. Finally the man managed to jerk free and instantly took off running, eager to be far from the crazy teen.
Kaito turned to Shinichi and held up the wallet with a triumphant grin before running after the woman. "Miss? Miss!?" he called after her. She turned around with a questioning look. "You dropped this," he held up her wallet.
Shinichi watched as she gave a little oh of surprise and began to thank him. Maybe being a Nephilim wasn't so bad after all.
Kaito sat across from Shinichi at the table picking at his dinner. The detective knew something was wrong, but he wanted to give Kaito a chance to volunteer the information instead of prying it out of him. Finally Kaito set down his fork and looked up.
"Shin-chan, I've been thinking. Snake is still out there, and he knows what you are. We need to have a plan to deal with that."
"I have been thinking about it as well, but I've yet to come up with a solution," at least not one I'm comfortable executing.
Kaito gave him a gentle smile, "You're lying. You've already thought up a solution, you just don't want to go through with it."
Shinichi looked down and clenched his fists, "because how could I ever agree to a plan that uses you as bait for a madman with a gun?"
Kaito sighed, "Do I even need to bother pointing out how hypocritical that is of you? Need I remind you that you played as bait for Gin?"
Shinichi huffed, "That was different! I'm a detective, and you're a civilian. Besides, if something were to happen to you," he cut himself off when he felt his throat constrict.
Kaito stood from his seat and made his way around the table until he was standing in front of the detective. He kneeled down on one knee and took Shinichi's hand in both of his. "It warms my heart how much you care about me, but you know this is the only way. Snake must be arrested. But don't worry so much, okay? I'm Kaitou KID, I've always managed to take care of myself. And you'll be there, my guardian angel watching my back with your healing tears."
Shinichi hesitated before finally replying, "Okay."
Three weeks later Shinichi stood on the roof of the museum that KID was currently targeting. He could hear the commotion downstairs as KID led his task force around in a brilliant dance, but he ignored it. He wasn't here to chase KID, he was here to capture a sniper. He knew Snake would be there. Kaito had written his heist note intentionally making it sound like he had found Pandora.
KID would be joining him on the roof any minute, but he still had no clue where Snake could be hiding. He turned sharply to the right when he suddenly felt eyes on him, but it was too late. A dart buried itself in his thigh, followed quickly by two more. Shinichi plucked them out, but he could already feel his body weakening.
"That's a highly powerful tranquilizer that's normally used to bring down elephants. A normal human would be dead by now, but a Nephilim would just feel weak," Snake stepped out from the shadows.
Shinichi fell to his knees. He put a hand to the ground trying to steady himself, but his vision was starting to swim. He weakly growled, "I won't allow you to touch KID."
To his surprise, Snake threw his head back and laughed, "KID? As if I would even be interested in that annoying brat anymore, or his stupid jewel that may or may not be real."
Shinichi looked perplexed, "Then why are you here?"
Snake stepped closer and buried his hand in Shinichi's hair, lifting the detective's face until he was looking into Snake's eyes. "Why would I be interested in a jewel when I have an immortal right here with me? Show me your wings, Nephilim," Snake smirked.
Shinichi spat in Snake's face, which caused the sniper to punch him in the jaw. "You'll pull them out whether you like it or not. The drugs are making you feel weak. Your body will try to conserve energy and will pull your wings out against your will," he sneered.
The half-angel was right, and after another moment, he felt his wings explode from his back, shredding the back of his jacket. They laid limb at his sides.
The door to the roof burst open and KID was suddenly there. He must have had a listening device planted on the roof because he didn't look surprised by what he saw. "Let him go, Snake," the thief's voice was calm, but Shinichi could make out the rage in his posture.
Snake laughed again, "And why would I do that?"
"I'll trade you. The detective, for Pandora," KID held out his hand with the stolen jewel in it. "It's the real thing. I already checked."
"Don't-" Shinichi couldn't say anymore before Snake clocked him in the jaw again.
"You're thinking too small. Why the hell would I want the jewel when I have an endless supply of immortality right here? With a Nephilim, I could start my own immortal organization. There are hundreds of legends world wide about winged humans, and all of them have stories on how to steal their immortality. Some say you have to eat their flesh and drink their blood, other's say the secret hides in their feathers or their tears. Either way I'm sure I can figure it out."
"I cannot allow that," KID told him.
Snake grinned, resembling a shark, "I was hoping you would saw that." He raised his gun and shot the unprepared thief.
"No!" Shinichi shouted in horror as he watched KID fall, but this time Shinichi wasn't there to catch him. He was far enough from the edge of the roof that he didn't fall from the building, so the detective saw him fall on his back, saw the suit turn red as blood seeped from the wound. Kaito didn't move.
"Kaito!" Shinichi screamed as he struggled to get away from his captor. Snake chuckled and released him, allowing Shinichi to scramble to Kaito's side. Tears leaked down his face and he lowered his head over Kaito's wound whispering, "Please heal. Please heal. Wake up, please. Please, wake up. Please heal."
For the second time he felt Snake grab him by the hair, "You can't heal the dead. Now let's go." He began to drag the half-angel away.
Snake had dragged him almost half way to the door when they both heard a moan of pain behind them. "Kaito?" Shinichi dared to hope. Snake turned in disbelief.
Kaito was sitting up, but he wasn't paying any attention to them. He was hunched over and gritting his teeth as if in pain, but he wasn't holding his bullet wound like the detective would had expected, but rather it looked like he was holding his shoulders, as if he was trying to reach his back. Suddenly Kaito began screaming in pain and clawing at his shoulder blades. With a final scream, wings burst from Kaito's back, shredding the back of his KID costume in the process. The wings rose up high above his head as if they were trying to reach the stars. The full moon showed bright enough that the color of his wings could just be made out. They were a deep blue.
As the sniper and the Nephilim watch, Kaito finally stood, his face obscured by shadow. I took a few deep breaths then he spoke, "This is your final warning. I will not repeat myself again. Let Shinichi go," Kaito's voice was low, but still managed to carry over to the sniper and his captive.
Rather than answering, Snake raised the tranquilizer gun and pointed it at KID. Before Shinichi could shout a warning, Kaito's wings suddenly turned an inky black color. If the full moon wasn't shining down on them, his wings might have disappeared in the darkness of the night. In the blink of an eye, Kaito was suddenly standing in front of Snake, his hand on Snake's face, his fingers squeezing the murderer's cheek bones. The skin under Kaito's grip began to turn black, and as Kaito held his grip the blackness spread in vein-like markings across Snake's face, as if the tiny capillaries in his face were dying. Snake let out a gurgled scream. The markings spread to Snake's neck and disappeared from view as they traveled lower, aiming for the heart.
"You killed my father. You killed so many others. You tried to take Shinichi from me. You tried to kill me many times. I should take your life and rid this world of one more parasite," Kaito glared down at the murderer.
Shinichi watched from his vantage point at their feet. He could feel the drugs starting to wear off, but he didn't trust himself to stand yet. Even if he could stand, he wasn't exactly sure what he would do. Would he stop Kaito, or let him finally have his revenge?
Snake didn't beg, didn't even try to speak. He just continued to choke in pain and fear. Kaito held his grip firmly, never looking away from the sniper.
Finally Snake's body went limp and Kaito released him, allowing Snake to fall to the ground in a heap. "I would never stoop to the level of a murderer, not even for revenge," Kaito said in disgust. Shinichi saw with relief that Snake's chest was rising and falling steadily.
Finally Kaito turned to Shinichi and collapsed on the ground next to him. "Shin-chan," he gently took the others hands in his own, "are you okay?"
Shinichi couldn't help but laugh, "You're asking me if I'm okay? Kaito, you were shot! Again! I thought you were dead-"
"I was dead," Kaito interrupted.
Shinichi stiffened, "But-then how? And you have wings?"
Kaito reached into his chest pocket and pulled out the jewel. He held it up to the moon light and it glowed red. "I think it was Pandora."
"That's not actually the correct name for it," a new, familiar voice suddenly joined them.
Both turned and behind them were Alyssa and Melene. Melene waved a cheerful hello, "Look's like we arrived just in time." Alyssa nodded at the obvious statement.
"I'm not sure I would agree considering you arrived after Kaito got shot and Snake tried to kidnap me," Shinichi pointed out.
Malene waved a dismissive hand, "You two had it under control. Don't forget that Alyssa here can see the future. She knew you would be okay. Besides if we had shown up before Kaito was shot, he never would have gotten his own wings."
Shinichi frowned, "As much as I would love a full explanation, this is still a crime scene and I need to take care of this. I should also see to it that Snake is arrested."
"I should go considering I'm a wanted criminal, even if I am harmless. I'll wait for you at the Kudo mansion?" Kaito asked.
Shinichi nodded. He hid his wings while the other three walked to the edge of the roof. The detective was a little worried about Kaito flying, considering he had his wings for a total of 10 minutes, but he trusted that Alyssa would know if he wasn't capable.
His fears were unnecessary. Kaito spread his wings, which were now back to being a deep blue, and jumped from the roof. A moment later Shinichi could see him soaring over the city below. 'What a show off. I guess he's more use to being in the air than I am.'
Shinichi cuffed Snake and was relieved to see that the black markings were gone from his body. All that was left to do was wait for the rest of the task force to show up.
Two hours later and Shinichi was finally home. The other three were waiting for him in the living room. Kaito had changed out of his bloody KID uniform to Shinichi's relief. Instead he was wearing one of Shinichi's low-back wing shirts, his wings out in full view. He also noticed that the shirt was too small on the magician. Kaito was just a little broader in the shoulders then he was causing the shirt to stretch tight across his chest. Kaito seemed to read his thoughts and gave him a flirtatious wink. Shinichi turned away with a blush.
He sat down next to the magician and reached for his hand, and then he finally turned to the other two female Nephilim. "I'm assuming you can explain to us exactly what happened tonight," he said.
Malene nodded, "It's all because of the jewel you called Pandora, and your love for Kaito."
Shinichi's cheeks turned pink but he didn't deny what she said, "That sounds a little too much like a fairy tail, don't you think? The power of love saved him?" Kaito snickered but didn't comment.
Malene smiled, "That jewel has gone by many names over the centuries, Pandora being one of its most recent. It was originally called The Angel's Heart, although that's a rough translation from a language long dead."
Alyssa continued, "Legends say that the first Nephilim created the jewel after a human he loved died from old age. He knew that other Nephilim had probably also lost mortal loved ones and he wished to stop that from happening. Once the jewel was created, he took his own life, taking the secrets on how exactly he made the jewel with him."
"So the jewel can make humans into Nephilim?" Shinichi asked.
Malene answered, "Yes, but there's a little more to it then that. The jewel can only be used in the presence of a Nephilim, and that Nephilim must truly love the person that the jewel is making immortal, or it won't have any affect on the human."
Kaito smiled grimly, "So Snake was searching for a jewel he never would have been able to use."
Shinichi turned to the magician, "Now that you have the jewel, will you try to destroy it like you originally intended?"
Kaito sat in silence for a long moment before shaking his head. He made the jewel appear in his hand in a cloud of smoke and offered it to Alyssa, "You should take it. Keep it somewhere safe. There are other Nephilim that might need it and you would know that; you would be able to find them."
Alyssa took the jewel with a soft smile, "Thank you for trusting me with it."
"So I'm sure you are wondering about your wings," Malene told Kaito.
Kaito glanced back at the wings on his back, "Yes, I am. They are blue now but they turned black when I attacked Snake, and what I did on the roof back there….it felt like I was draining the life out of Snake."
Malene answered, "I have never seen wings like yours before, but that's hardly surprising. Your immortality was given to you by the Angel's Heart, and any Nephilim created by the jewel is always given strange wings never before seen. I once met a created Nephilim with glittery pink wings. She could create pink flowers using her wings, and anyone that smelled the flowers would feel happier."
Kaito turned to Alyssa, "I'm guessing you have an idea what my wings do."
Alyssa nodded, "I believe your wings are used for protecting others in whatever way you deem necessary. I had a vision of your wings hardening and you using them like a shield to protect Shinichi from debris from a car accident. A man lost control of his vehicle in the rain and wrecked his car into a pole. Lucky Kaito was there to protect you."
"I don't suppose you could tell me more so that I could potentially stop the victim from wrecking his car?" Shinichi asked.
Alyssa shook her head, "The future can be changed, but accidental deaths cannot. It really was just his time to go. If he had been murdered, you possibly could have stopped it from happening. But even if you found a way to prevent the car accident, he would have died some other way. If you were able to save him, if it wasn't his time to go, I would probably have seen Shinichi use his healing tears in my vision."
"Ok, so what about the way my wings change in order to protect people. They turned black on the roof because I was literally draining the life from Snake," Kaito said.
"Exactly," Malene answered.
"But you didn't kill him. You stopped yourself before you got that far," Shinichi told the magician.
Kaito frowned, "I couldn't do it. I refused to become a murderer like him."
Shinichi gave him a smile and squeezed his hand, "That's why your heart is pure."
The next morning Kaito had dragged Shinichi out of the house with him to go flying together. The magician was ecstatic to fly using his own wings instead of a glider. Last night didn't count because he had too much on his mind at the time to enjoy it. Shinichi drifted lazily watching with amusement as Kaito twisted and turned in the air doing summersaults midair and looking like he had been flying since birth.
The two landed together some time later, both slightly breathless, but both smiling and laughing together. Kaito pulled Shinichi into his arms and wrapped his wings loosely around the detective. "So you really love me?"
Shinichi blushed, "Obviously I do, or the jewel wouldn't have worked."
Kaito chuckled. He lowered his head to speak into Shinichi's ear, his breath ghosting on the detective's skin, raising goose bumps, "Could I hear you say it? Pretty please?"
Shinichi turned in Kaito's arms so he could face the taller man. It was a little awkward with both sets of wings, but he managed. He tried to force down the blush he could feel on his face, "I love you."
Kaito gave him a soft smile that made Shinichi's heart soar with happiness. He cupped Shinichi's cheek and leaned forward to give him a soft kiss. When he pulled back and rested his forehead against Shinichi's, "I love you too.
"So what's the plan now? You found Pandora or the Angel's Heart or whatever it's called, so what's your next goal?" Shinichi asked.
Kaito hummed in thought, "Well we have plenty of years before anyone notices that we aren't ageing. I could prolong our time using make up. We could stay here for awhile, live out our lives. After that, we could travel the world. Go explore a little, meet new people, see new things. We could always settle down for a few years somewhere if we wanted to."
Shinichi replied, "That idea would sound very lonely if we didn't have each other. But knowing you'll be there with me, it sounds like a great way to spend eternity."
Kaito's smile grew, "together it sounds like a grand adventure."
A/N: I did not know how to end this! And I'm still not very happy with the ending, so if I think of a better way to end it I might change it later. Let me know if there are any inconsistencies, I changed the color of Kaito's wings like 3 times so I might have the wrong color listed somewhere.
I used google translate for Malene's German. If it's wrong, I apologize and if someone wants to tell me the correct way to say it, I will happily change it.
So I just remembered that I have used the Long-Coat-To-Hide-Antidote-Side-Effect before (used previously to hide Shinichi's cat-like tail) and I don't know all I can say is that I'm not very creative or original, hahaha.
I got the name Malene from a german baby names website. I just picked a name at random. I can't remember what country Alyssa originates from, but I also picked it at random.
Hope you guys enjoyed it, leave me a review and tell me what you think. See you next time.
