Heather lay out in the grass in her cheetah form. She could feel the small boy that had followed her outside crawling over her and sensed him when he was in front of her face. Opening one eye, she cheeked at him as he kissed her nose and let out a giggle before he jumped over her. She flicked her tail back and forth so Keegan could place his favorite game. She could hear him giggle as he would just barely miss it as she would flick it away from. Him.
"Pretty kitty," the boy whined and crawled back toward her and she lifted her paw, batting him on the cheek gently. He laughed and rolled over on his back. She opened her eyes and moved toward him, nudging his face with her nose. Keegan made a churring sound in response and Heather turned her head and stared at him.
She was lucky that the young boy could understand her words in the current form she was in. His ability to communicate with animals had appeared very early in his life because of the distress he went through the first few years. Heather knew the boy needed more than just a talk, though, and she shifted into her human form, her ears flicking. "What's wrong Keegan?" She asked him, and without hesitating he moved and sat in her lap, but remained silent. "You can talk to me, you know that right?" She felt him nod against her and watched as he pulled out a phone and opened it, moving to a photo. When he showed it to her, she looked closely. "Who is this Keeg? Where did you take this?"
Keegan's hands moved quickly as he signed an explanation to her and anger built up inside her as realization hit on what was happening. On the outside, she tried her best to remain calm, not wanting to panic the little boy who looked ready to cry. "Are you sure this is her?" Heather asked, moving her hand across his forehead and sweeping hair from his eyes. He nodded again. "Okay, we need to go find your dad okay?" She stood up and went to pick Keegan up only to have to cover hear ears as he let out an ear-piercing scream.
"I guess the little brat figured it out. Silence!"
The scream stopped as if it was instinct to listen to the person. Heather could hear Keegan's heart beating and she looked down at him. "Run." She told him before shifting back into her full form.
"Oh, this should be fun, another one of Daken's children. He should know, attachments only make you hurt." She said, as Keegan ran, but made no move to follow him. "He'll be dead within an hour. Like you."
Inside, the compound a lot had settled since the latest arrivals. It was not calm, the tension still hanging in the air by the events happening in their home country. Families were being reunited, though, and those who needed a room had taken one. A lot of the older generation had found themselves in a common room while the kids had gone off to others. Tony and Steve sat next to each other while watching the news on a tablet given to them by Dakota. While they had a tv in the room, the two knew not everyone was at the point of watching it.
"Steve. I need to talk to you." Bucky said, walking into the room. Steve nodded and walked over to him. Bucky led him down the hall to another room and shut the door. "Nat just called me. She's on her way here with Clint and the kids that went to S.H.I.E.L. D,," He started,
"That's good. What's wrong though?"
"She sent me a digital file on someone that they believe is a mole." Bucky opened his tablet and handed it to Steve. "I'm telling you because I don't know if I will stop Akihiro if he sees her. You are the only one I've told of this, so be discreet about it."
"I saw her with the kids in the recreation room earlier. Where is Dak...Akihiro now?"
"He was with his brother and sister. I think they were in the medical lab with Josh. They were working on Charmaine."
"Okay. Let's find this person and get them away from everyone else." Steve told him. "I'm going to go let Tony know, just so we have another pair of eyes until Nat gets here with the others. We should find Keegan and get him with the adults as well."
"I'll find him. I can get Heather or Mara to help with that."
"Are you okay?"
"This woman abused Keegan. I don't know if I can stop myself if I see her. When he first got back to us…"
"You aren't in this alone, Buck, I have your back. "
Charmaine lay on her stomach as Joshua Folley healed her back. It took everything in the young girl not to let the tears fall from her either side of her. She knew her brother and sister sat, holding her hands. She was grateful to be alive. She was happy to have her family with her. She still had so much, but her wings had meant a lot to her. They were a piece of her she never thought she would be without them. She felt the wounds close and the pain disappear.
"It's done." Josh told her, and Jayson moved and wrapped a towel around her as she sat up, Kestrel handing her a shirt to put on. Her brother reached up and brushed a tear from her cheek before moving away and letting her cover herself up.
"I'm okay. I promise. I'm just happy to be here, safe with ya'll," she said, giving them a small smile. "Where did Mama run off to with Uncle James and Uncle Akihiro?"
"I think they're right outside." Kestrel answered her before Jayson at a chance to. "But ya should just rest for a bit. A lot has happened."
"And let the two of ya go do something stupid? No, thank ya. " Charmaine shook her head as she stood up. "I would rather head upstairs than be a in a stuffy room."
" They're talking, give 'em a minute." Aislin said, causing the triplets to jump, two of them forgetting that their older sister was still in the room. "We can get ya to the room we're staying in. Jay can take the top bunk instead of the bottom. Keep it easy on ya."
"Josh just healed me, I'm fine," Charmaine told them and opened the door, to see that everyone else was in fact out in the hall. The three of them stopped talking and turned to her. "I'm fine." She reassured them.
"If you need a more quiet place, my room is further from the others and has an extra bed." James offered his niece. "I won't let anyone bother you."
"I appreciate it, Uncle James, but I think I'll be okay with them." She smiled and hugged him.
Before they could speak again, a gush of wind hit them and Kielar stood in front of them. "Steve told me to come get you. A Nina is apparently outside, they're trying to…" Laura, James and Akihiro were gone before he could finish.
"What was that?" Kestrel asked. "Did you say Nina was here!?" Charmaine watched her siblings follow the three adults.
"Go, I'll make my way up. Does anyone know where Keegan is?"
"No, nobody has located him." Kielar told Charmaine. "I can carry you to the top. It'll be quicker."
"I'm going to search for him. It'll be better if I stay away from the action right now. But thank you."
She watched the other teenager disappear before she took a deep breath. "Alright Keegan, where are ya hiding…" she whispered to herself before going in the same direction as everyone.
Bucky's hand gripped around Nina Darkholme's neck as she gasped for breath and grabbed at the metal arm holding her in the air. Heather stood nearby, now in her human form, worn down from the fight she had just been through, able to hold the other woman in place until someone else could arrive. She would have felt sorry for the woman if she didn't hate her so much, because anyone on the wrong side of Bucky's anger was in trouble. And then there was blood flowing from her abdomen as three claws went through her. The look of surprise passed after a second before she dropped to the ground.
"Heal her Elixir." Dake's voice growled.
"I will not heal her just for you to stab her again."
"He won't." Bucky assured the other man. "At least not right away. We need answers."
Josh let out a sigh and reluctantly healed the woman. "This only happens once." He told the woman. "If even a hair is hurt on Keegan's head. You won't have to worry about the two of them. You'll already be dead, and I will bring you back just to kill you again, and it will never be the same way." He told her before moving away. "I hope you're clear on that." he told her as he stepped away. "She's all yours."
Nina stood up and tried to make a run for it, only to have the rest of the Howletts blocking her way. As she turned another direction, they met her with Steve and Tony. Her last attempt failed as they met her with Natasha, Clint, Francis, Ryan, Blaine, and Nicole. "I guess this is the part where I should be afraid.
"Ya might." Desiree said, moving into a spot next to James. "Because ya didn't just get meh Mama killed, or Logan. Dere were others caught in the crossfire. Y' ain't got no idea what y' have done."
"I'm not afraid of a few LeBeau's or Howletts, or any of those pathetic little misfits from Xavier's."
Nina snapped.
"Then let me see what you are really afraid of." Jade said. "You made me watch my father die." The red-head spewed out with hate laced in her voice. The teenager's eyes glowed and her hair floated up as she used her abilities on the traitor in front of them. Nina's eyes went white as the visions placed before her took over her sight. As her screams took over any noise outside, many from inside came to see what was happening. The woman withered on the ground.
"Was this necessary?" James asked Desiree, who just shrugged in answer.
"Maybe it ain't, but it sure makes Jade and ah feel better, don't it? Dere ain't many things we agree on."
"We need to find Keegan." Heather said suddenly. "I told him to run, and he ran into the woods. I don't know where he would have gone"
"We can set up a search party." Steve said. "All trackers should head in and see if they can find him. Tony, Natasha, Clint and I can keep Nina in a holding cell." We'll keep watch while all of you are gone."
"He can communicate with animals." Daken told everyone. "Not too many people are aware of this. Make sure you identify yourself, because he will most likely have animals helping him. He always does, and they won't hesitate to attack."
"I'll stay here and make sure he has someone he trusts just in case he comes back." Charmaine said, making herself known to them. "He needs that."
"Kestrel and I can fly overhead and see if we can find anything." Jayson told them.
"Just stay low enough that you don't catch anyone else's attention." Laura told her son.
Heather moved to Daken. "I'm sorry. I panicked a bit when I realized it was her. He had just told me and….I didn't want her around him any longer than he needed to be." She explained.
"You protected him. He's probably safer in those woods than he would have been staying and being around the fight. You did good, kid, you coming with us?"
"Well, I'm not staying here." Heather told him, rolling her eyes.
Keegan ran through the woods as fast as his legs could carry him as his vision blurred from the tears in his eyes. The terrified boy only looked back once at the edge of the woods before continuing on to get away from his mother. His foot caught a root on the ground and he launched forward, falling to the ground where he lay crying heavily for some time. Once he calmed down, he lifted his head and wiped his tear-stained cheeks before looking around at his surroundings.
Sitting up, he moved back until he was against a large tree. He rubbed his eyes with his arm and sniffled a bit as he tried to keep calm. The child had not been alone like this in a long time and now he was lost and alone. He remembered his dad telling him he would always be safe, and that he could ask his friends for help, even if they weren't human. Keegan let out a little whimper before he lifted his chin and howled, hoping there were wolf friends around to help him. He whimpered again and let out another shaky howl, crying out for help.
The boy curled up against the tree and shut his eyes as he waited, hoping someone, anyone, would find him. He fell asleep, and when he woke up again, he felt fur against him and looked down to see a wolf. He let out a whimper, only to have another nudge his hand. He moved to lay his head down on the wolf. They were warm, and they came to help him. He knew they were friends.
When Keegan opened his eyes again, it was dark. He panicked when he heard a snarl from the wolf in the pack that found him. He looked at the nearest one and saw the relaxed nature of her body as she remained close to him. He tilted his head to the side, reading the situation at hand before he climbed on her back and she took off running. The alpha and other members of the pack Keegan noticed had their ears low and to the side with their snout wrinkled and teeth barred. He knew something was going on. They were protecting him.
As his wolf friend slowed to a stop near a cave and he climbed off. The female wolf nudged him forward, and he moved inside. Keegan sat down with the wolf and wiped more tears away as he looked out through the trees at the moon. There was a rustle in the trees and he immediately moved further inside his hiding place. The wolf stood on guard, ears suddenly back and lip curled as she let out a snarl.
"Pup?" a voice broke through and Keegan shot to his feet. He ran out and toward the voice before leaping into his father's arms. "Good job." Daken whispered to his son. "Let your friend know you'll be okay." Keegan nodded and went back to the wolf that had protected him and reassured her that his dad was a friend. She studied the man before she relaxed and disappeared into the woods to find her pack. Daken pressed the communicator in his ear. "I have him. Head back to base."
"I'm almost to you." Heather responded first. "I need to see him."
True to her word, she ran past the trees and saw the father and son, approaching them out of breath. "Keegan."
"Pretty Kitty," he said as he hugged her and pet her hair. "Okay?"
"I'm okay."
"Good." He said and nuzzled his nose against her cheek.
