Chapter 4: Graduation and Foreshadowing?
Another three years have passed by in a blur. It is late morning now, and I am standing on the training ground with Sister Anna standing opposite to me.
"You are allowed to use anything. "Your only goal is to win in any way you can."
"Yes, I understand."
"Now then, let's begin."
"{Trigger On}"
Reinforcing my legs, I instantly dashed at Sister Anna. Seeing me coming at her, she put up her sword to block it.
Cutting my momentum, I stepped back and pulled some throwing daggers out of my sleeves. They were the pseudo-Black Keys that I had tried making this year. Holding the Black Keys between my fingers, I threw them towards her. Seeing the Black Keys coming towards her, she swerved right and left, dodging both.
As she was dodging, I charged at her again. This time, instead of swinging my sword at her, I pulled a feint and got behind her. Using my legs, I tried to kick her behind her knees to make her lose balance.
Noticing what I was trying, she grabbed one of the Black Keys she had just dodged from the air and swung back towards my neck. Seeing it come towards me, I stopped my kick midway and reinforced my right arm to block the blade.
She used that chance to reposition herself and face me again. Once again, we were back in our original position. This time she started by swinging her sword towards me. I blocked it and tried to counter, but she pulled her sword back and countered my counter.
This went back and forth as we kept dodging and striking one by one, over and over. It went on for quite a while before we finally came to a stop after we understood that just swordsmanship wouldn't be enough to beat the opponent.
"Haah…haah… you've gotten quite good, huh?" Sister Anna inquired, panting slightly.
"Is that so?" I looked at her cautiously as I spoke.
"I suppose I should get more serious now."
"W-what?"
I suddenly sensed the activation of magic power. I realized Sister Anna was going to use magic.
"[Torrens Ventus]"
As soon as she spoke those words, a magic circle came out of her hand and shot out several scythes of wind towards me. I immediately rolled out of the way and looked at her, but she launched more magic at me.
I kept dodging by weaving past the spells, and I even reinforced my sword to cut through some of the magic. I got cut here there all over by body but they were nothing fatal. I understood that if I kept doing this, I would only wear myself out and keep giving her time to cast magic.
So once I cut down the fire spell she launched at me, I quickly reinforced my legs and leaped at her, causing her to step back towards her right.
"And now, {Set}"
Immediately behind Sister Anna, several magic circles opened up in the air and launched Black Keys at her. It took her a second to realize what was happening, but she used her sword to disrupt the first few, but the third one slightly cut her leg.
The barrage didn't end with that, as five more circles opened up again. I also pulled out more Black Keys from my sleeves and threw them at her from behind while she distracted by the circles. She didn't have enough time to cast magic to repel them, so she poured magic power into her sword and quickly started to deflect and redirect the Black Keys to the side.
But that wasn't the end. Slightly grinning, I activated the spell I had put on the Black Keys.
"[Fragor]"
All the Black Keys suddenly started to glow. When she saw them glow, she understood what was going to happen and tried to get out of range, but she was too late. All the Black Keys exploded and caused a small explosion.
It took a few moments for the smoke to clear, and I saw Sister Anna still standing, but her nun outfit was ripped in certain areas and her arms were bleeding a bit with her broken sword lying on the ground. Seeing that, I thought she was done for, so I used that chance to run and apprehend her.
As I got close, she suddenly moved and punched at my jaw. I was startled for a moment and barely dodged her punch by pulling myself back at the last second. Then, she used the momentum of that punch to throw a couple more at me.
I used my arms to block most of it, but I was caught off guard again by the sudden kick to my shin. I lost my balance for a second, and that was enough for her to launch another kick at my face. This time, though, I failed to dodge and got hit cleanly in the face. I staggered back a bit and spit out the blood that had formed in my mouth.
Even though I got hit, I used that small opening to reset and get into position. This time I reinforced my body and went on the offensive. I threw a punch with my right fist, which she dodged by moving to the side. She clenched her fist and threw a punch towards the side of my face. When I saw that, I knew I had won.
I pumped more magic power into my Reinforcement as I used my right arm to grab her punching arm from below. Then, I positioned my left elbow and delivered a blow to her stomach. Sister Anna choked at my elbow and fell to her knees. It was a Bajiquan technique called "Six Grand Opening - Elbow Upthrust."
I placed my palm on her neck and asked, "Do you yield?"
"Yes, I yield this fight," she spoke, with exhaustion showing in her tone.
"Good, now, Asia, can you please heal her?" I requested it of the person who stood on the sidelines during this fight.
"O-oh, yes, Tristan," she stuttered back as she realized the battle had ended.
She quickly ran over and started to use her sacred gear to heal Sister Anna. It only took a few minutes for her to be healed, and Asia walked over to me to heal me up.
"I think you're already strong enough to become an exorcist." Sister Anna stood up with a gentle smile gracing her face.
"Seriously? I'm only 13, you know, plus I know you didn't go all out" I said in genuine surprise.
"Yeah, I think you're more than ready. I'll go report to the Bishop to give you an official exorcist position." She told me as she got up from the ground.
After Asia finished healing me up, I suggested that all of us have lunch together. We walked to the cafeteria that was attached to the dorms while making some small talk.
...
This fight I had with Sister Anna was a test she gave me. She saw the rapid growth I've had since I joined the Church and made the decision that I should already be ready to become a Junior exorcist. Later on, as I go on missions, I can be promoted to become an official exorcist.
Typically, children become junior exorcists around the age of 14 or 15, and after some experience, they are promoted to become official exorcists. Since I showed some talent, I was allowed to try out early for graduation by fighting our instructor one-on-one with everything they had.
Thankfully, I managed to beat Sister Anna due to the intense training I went through for the past few years. I used all the knowledge I knew to practice new techniques. I was greatly inspired by a certain Fake Priest from Fate, and I really wanted to try and recreate some of his techniques and fighting style. For that reason, I had to ask Sister Anna and some of the other instructors to help me learn martial arts. Putting in all my effort during my training time, I managed to learn Jiu-jitsu and Bajiquan. I wanted to practice more martial arts, but I had too many things on my plate.
During all my breaks and free time, I spent most of it practicing magecraft. The first thing I tried to train in was Reinforcement but I realized that it was too much for a beginner, so I had to practice some other things.
So, the first thing I started with was learning how to make a bounded field. I couldn't make a full-on large bounded field in the freaking Vatican, so I settled for small bounded fields the size of my room as practice. Originally, after this, I wanted to train in Jewel magecraft but I realized I didn't have money nor did I remember how to use it, so I had to scrap that idea.
Instead, I tried to combine my martial arts and magecraft knowledge to recreate the Super Bajiquan. Even though I didn't really know the exact, detailed principles behind Super Bajiquan, I could only go by what I remembered from the many wiki pages I read. The only thing I knew was that it was an internal art that damages a person's insides in a short and instantaneous burst of power. Though I had to separately make a training regimen to train my body to use this new martial art since, if used incorrectly, it could be extremely dangerous.
All of that training lasted for two years, and at the beginning of this year, I finally got around to learning Reinforcement. Whenever I wanted to train in it, I always called Asia to accompany me because her Sacred Gear could initially help me keep my body under control. Because this magecraft simply consisted of pouring magical energy into the small opening in your body and pushing it to its limit, Asia's Twilight Healing assisted me in keeping my body intact. After a few uses, I got the hang of it and didn't need to rely on Asia's sacred gear as much anymore.
Another handy thing I learned on the side was the art of throwing daggers and short swords. I just set up targets and practiced whenever I could after I finished everything. I also had to ask for a few favors from Sister Anna to make something similar to the Black Keys. All I had to do was inscribe the weapons with prayers and lines of scripture to make them poisonous to demonic beings.
As for my trump card, the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, I must admit that I didn't get to use it that much. All I could practice was trying to keep it open as long as possible, but other than that, it was pretty hard to use. I think it's only when I go on missions and fight actual opponents that I will be able to practice using the Mystic Eyes to their full potential.
When I picked these eyes at the start, I thought I had gotten a super-overpowered cheat ability, but that certainly isn't the case. Even with the eyes, I'm still limited by my physical abilities. Even if I could kill someone by cutting through their "lines of death," I still need to get close enough to do that. If the opponent is just much faster, then I'd be completely useless. That's also partly the reason why I tried to learn martial arts to strengthen my body.
The most important thing I had to keep in mind was that until I got strong enough to at least kill Ultimate class opponents with ease, I shouldn't openly reveal my eyes to anyone.
...
"Hey Asia, if you could go outside the church, where would you want to go?"
"Huh? I guess I would like to go to a restaurant, I want to go to the shopping mall you told me about, oh, and I would also like to try out that video game you complained about as well," Asia replied in confusion.
It seems I might have inadvertently changed Asia a bit without even realizing it. As a gamer in my previous life, I was absolutely horrified at the lack of games in this world. I think I might have whined about the terrible games way too much for even Asia to want to try them out.
The reason for my complaining is because the year is 2004 right now, and the popular console right now is something called GameSquare. It was essentially an alternate version of the Nintendo GameCube. When I went out into the city once and saw that console in the store, I was nostalgic at first, but afterwards I just felt depressed.
I mean, even the internet wasn't a proper thing in this world yet, and it was still in its infant stage. Looking at this made me realize how much time I had spent on social media and other sites. But I definitely missed the level of technology I had back in our world because this one seems a bit slow in its development. But that might partly be due to the influence of the supernatural on human society.
As I was lost in my own monologue, I noticed that Asia, who was sitting next to me, was looking somewhere else. I followed her gaze, and I saw two people walking in our direction. One was a woman who wore a nun outfit, and the other was a teenager who looked my age with long blue hair.
Seeing those two people walking in our direction, I immediately tensed up. I immediately grabbed Asia's hand and led her away from that spot.
"A-ah, what happened?" Asia questioned me with a worried look on her face.
"No, they just looked like troublesome people that I didn't want to get involved with." I answered in absolute seriousness.
'When I looked at that pair, I immediately knew who they were. It was Xenovia Quarta and her mother figure, Griselda Quarta.'
Even though Xenovia looked a bit different with her long hair, I couldn't mistake her because her face looked exactly the same as it did in the show, just a bit younger.
Thankfully, though, I walked out of the spot, or else I might have gotten involved with another one of the characters from the main plot. I wouldn't say I'm against interacting with the major characters, but if I had a choice, I would rather not since they attract too much attention and trouble to themselves.
I wanted to avoid Asia the same way, but my terrible luck had led me to meet her. Still, after getting to know Asia, I have definitely started to think of her as a naive and innocent little sister.
"Umm...Are you okay?" Asia asked quietly interrupting my thoughts.
"No I'm fine just thinking about something" I smiled at her while scratching the back of my head.
It seems I got lost in my own thoughts once again. I keep getting lost in my thoughts a lot more these days, mostly due to my anxiety acting up. Sister Anna did say yesterday that she would report the results of the fight to the Bishop. So, I'll probably be called to receive my first mission tomorrow. I am extremely anxious but also partly looking forward to testing my abilities against actual opponents. I just hope everything goes right tomorrow.
