When Red woke it was to an empty bunk. The room was cold, still, nothing fluttered or moved other than the floor under her but even that was starting to feel normal. She pulled her boots on and went out on deck. Empty other than Farenheight who was steering. No land in any direction, just empty ocean.
"Lookin for Hancock?" Fanenheight asked. Red blinked, she didn't know anyone by that name.
"Crew quarters seein to the boys." She flicked a thumb in the direction of a different door, so Red went that way. She wandered under deck a bit before she heard voices and followed it until she found a large chamber lined with hammocks. All the crew were stuffed in and all eyes on John. He was explaining that no matter what happened, no matter what the Institute did, they would still have each other. No one could take that from them.
"That being said, I'm gonna go on a little walkabout next time we hit land. Need to get boots on the ground for a bit, get back to my roots." He was looking at each face before him, and spotted Red. He smirked and sent her a wink. "Farenheight's in charge till I get back, and when I get back I expect each one of you here, and my ship intact. Think you lazy oaf's can handle that?" They all shouted and some went up to clap John on the shoulder, all smiles. Red was surprised everyone would be so accepting of the captain just leaving like that. By the time he made his way over to her it seemed like every man had wished him well.
"We're hitting land tomorrow, at least that's the plan."
"And you're leaving them, just like that?" Red fell in step beside him as he walked back out to the deck.
"I've done it before. I get restless on a boat for so long seeing the same stupid mugs day in and day out." He shrugged. "I'd like to go with you if you'd have me."
"Of course you're welcome." Red felt at a loss. She was just aimlessly wandering, she didn't really have any adventure in mind. They stood on deck looking out at the water, it looked endless.
