Epilogue
Hermione rolled over and yawned. Light was coming in the window. She felt refreshed after a good sleep. It had been much needed. The proceeding days, months really, had taken a toll on her. She slowly got out of bed and shuffled into the bathroom. After a shower she got dressed and made her way into the bedroom down the hall. She stood at the door for a moment and just watched the scene before her, a smile on her lips. Harry was standing with his back to her, his body rocking back and forth. His voice was quiet as a song left his lips. Hermione quietly entered the room and gently put her hand on her husband's shoulder. "You are a great father, Harry," Hermione whispered.
Harry turned toward his wife and beamed at her. "Shhh, she's almost asleep."
"Want me to take over?" Hermione offered as she looked lovingly at her tiny daughter's face. The infant had dark hair and long eyelashes. She was beautiful and perfect despite her small size. She was born a month ago at only 5lbs. 2oz. It had been one of the happiest and scariest days of Hermione and Harry's life.
"No, it's alright," Harry said.
Hermione nodded and pecked him on the cheek before moving toward the crib. She looked down at her son who was bundled up sleeping peacefully. His hair was an almond color and while she wasn't sure yet what color his eyes would settle on, she was confident they would be green. They were lighter than his sisters already. Her son had been only 4lbs 12oz at birth. Hermione was so grateful for their growth and she resisted the desire to pick him up, knowing she'd have plenty of time later to snuggle him. Harry gently laid down the baby girl next to her brother and taking Hermione's hand they quietly exited the room.
Harry immediately took Hermione in arms and held her close. "Are you feeling alright this morning?"
"Quite well. My loving husband let me sleep. He's spoiling me!" She kissed Harry and took his hand as they started for the stairs.
"You needed the rest," Harry said.
"I did. But you also need sleep," Hermione said. "You look a bit tired."
"Well, rising five times in the night and getting up at 5am can do that," Harry admitted.
Hermione chuckled, "It won't last forever. I'll help tonight. Don't let me sleep through everything. We need to work together. And maybe you should try to get a nap today."
"Hmmm, that sounds enticing, but only if you join me," Harry said.
"Well, I'm not sure the twins will cooperate with that plan so let's not get our hopes up," Hermione said with a smile.
"One can always hope," Harry said. "So, breakfast?"
"Yes!" Hermione said.
"You are sure you feel alright?" Harry asked.
"Yes, Harry. I slept great. The doctor says as long as I rest and don't over exert myself I will be fine. You don't need to worry. I'm healing well enough."
"You took your potions?"
"Yes, dear."
"Sorry, I don't mean to nag," Harry admitted.
"It's alright. It's been…rough…with everything that happened," Hermione said.
"My dear, I think traumatic might be more accurate," Harry said with feeling. Hermione gave him a sad smile.
"I'm sorry," Hermione said.
"Hermione, you have no reason to be sorry. Don't say that. I am happier than I could imagine," Harry said, holding her hand. "I just…keep…I can't get that image out of my head….You falling, the blood, then you were rushed away. I was terrified I'd lose you….all of you."
"Harry…." Hermione whispered. It broke her heart to see him so troubled. She knew it had been hard on him. They hadn't talk much about it. "I'm here. I'm alright. We all are."
Harry shook himself. "I know. I know. It was just scary. But you're right. We are all here. Things just happened so fast. Now, we are parents! Parents! I can hardly believe it. It's terrifying and wonderful all at once."
"That's accurate," Hermione chuckled. "You're doing great at it."
"You are too, my dear," Harry said.
They enjoyed a quiet breakfast together. It was a rare thing these days. The twins didn't always keep the same sleep schedule and it was exhausting on both parents. An hour later they were back in the nursery together, each holding and feeding a baby. Harry admired how Hermione just naturally took to motherhood. He knew she doubted herself at times. They had had lots of discussions before the twins were born about fears they each had. Neither one of them had much experience with children or babies. But it seemed that their fears were for not. Holding his own children was easy. Taking care of them was exhausting and frustrating at times but it was also the most important thing in his life. He didn't know he could love more than he had before. His love for Hermione had grown too.
When Hermione had come to him, two years ago, asking how he felt about having children he had been ecstatic. He had always wanted a family. There was nothing he could think of that would be better than having a child with the woman he loved most. But it wasn't that simple. Hermione's health had improved by leaps and bounds but it had been a slow process and he feared the impact pregnancy would have on her. As it turns out he was right to worry. They had suffered two miscarriages before turning to mediwizards for help. Even then, it was three more miscarriages, and a few health scares later, before they got pregnant with the twins. Harry's worry only increased when they found out it was twins. They had known there was a likelihood of it with the type of help they were getting but the reality was terrifying. Hermione had been on bedrest for most of the pregnancy. Even then, she suffered greatly. Her tremors increased, her headaches were more frequent, and he had been scared to death when she fainted on multiple occasions. A month before the due date Hermione had collapsed, bleeding heavily. Harry had rushed her to St. Mungos and the babies were delivered by emergency surgery. They were both very small but they were perfectly healthy. Hermione had struggled for two days to regain consciousness. Harry had been terrified during those hours. He wasn't prepared to be a father alone. Harry still struggled with nightmares of losing his wife. They were a mix of recent events and those from the past when they were newly married and fighting a mad man.
Harry looked at his wife in the rocking chair. She had her eyes closed and was rocking and humming to their son. He walked over and kissed her forehead. He placed the little girl into the crook of her other arm. Her eyes opened and she smiled up at him. "How can I ever thank you for giving me these precious gifts?" Harry said.
"You can change all the diapers," Hermione smiled at him.
Harry chuckled, "That may be hard when I have to work."
"Excuses, excuses," Hermione teased.
"Seriously, Hermione, they are miracles," Harry said reverently.
"I know. They are," Hermione said, smiling down at their babies.
"I love you Mrs. Potter."
"I love you too."
Later that day their home was filled with friends as the twins were officially named,Lilly Joy Potter and Severus James Potter. The celebration was one of the happiest that Harry could remember having. He laughed as he watched Ron nervously hold his son. His new wife, Alison, soon relieved him and Harry made his way toward his best friend with a smirk. "You better get used to it. I think if Alison has her way you'll have one of your own in a year or two." Harry laughed as his friend paled at the idea. Harry made the rounds and said hello and chatted to everyone. He was surprised that he hadn't held a baby for a while. Each person wanted their turn to swoon over his new children. Mrs. Weasley looked like she was in heaven. Harry eventually found Hermione in a quiet corner of the room. He noticed her eyes were a bit misty. "Alright love?"
She nodded with a smile. "Look. Just look, Harry….all these people that love us. They love our children. This is a family. This is our family." Hermione turned to her husband and looking him straight in the eyes said, "This is all I've ever wanted. And I know you have too. I'm glad we could make this together. I'm so glad I get to do this with you." Hermione kissed him soundly. Almost three years ago she had written her goodbyes. She had been fairly certain she wouldn't get to see a day like this. She was overwhelmed with joy.
Harry didn't have words. She was right. He had never had a proper family. He had always wanted one. It might not be what one would call traditional but it was a family. His children would grow up surrounded by people that loved them. He was the luckiest man alive.
