Chapter 2
Kagome groaned as her hand throbbed in pain, she had spent almost two hours filling out paperwork in Nezu's office. Thank God she was done with it all now, everything was set in stone, the I's dotted and the T's crossed. She would be teaching the hero support course as well as helping out with the combat course when needed.
She felt giddy and nervous all at the same time, she was excited to start this next chapter of her life...but she was nervous she would mess up. It was scary to know that she held the futures of her class in her hands, that her words and teachings would help shape future heroes! Would she be good enough?
She tried to push down the negative thoughts, knowing they would do no good yet it was an old and hard habit to break. She had spent years being talked down to by her ex, she had been his support and during their time together they had started a romance. It was wild, spontaneous, and in the end so very toxic. Things had come to an explosive end, something the media ate up. It was honestly part of why she decided to retire and become a teacher.
So lost in her thoughts she was barely conscious of her surroundings, her feet on auto pilot as she walked down the halls of UA.
She yelped as she walked into what she could only assume was a wall, only to blink as the wall let out a deep grumble, large hands gripping her upper arms to help steady her. "I see that some things never change Higurashi." The deep gruff voice made her blink again, a smile blossoming on her face as she gazed up into ice blue eyes.
"Enji! What are you doing here?" Her voice was excited, having not seen the number two hero in years. It was a sad sobering thought, they used to be close in school yet after they had graduated they had all drifted apart. They were no longer the best of friends but mere acquaintances that only really saw each other during hero missions.
In fact the last time she saw him was during a formal event held for heroes. They had made small talk, he vaguely mentioned that his youngest son held a lot of potential before being called away to rub elbows with the other heroes and the many sponsors that were at the black tie event.
After all, he was the number two hero, he had no time for old classmates. No, he was far too busy chasing after Toshi. She didn't know what it was but the two were always trying to outdo the other, in fact both of them had even tried to woo her. She had been quick to shut that down, not wanting to be just another prize won in their competition. It had honestly almost ruined their friendship but luckily, they were all able to move past it.
"Lost in thought again...honestly..." She flushed as she heard his grumbling and rolled her eyes as she shot him a small grin. She shivered as he let her arms go and took a step away from her. She suddenly felt chilly now that his body heat was no longer next to hers. She let her eyes run over his form, he was still just as tall as ever.
He towered over her five-foot two frame, his six-foot five frame was much bulkier than it had been back in school. His dark blue suit was pulled taunt over his large muscles, a white dress shirt peeking out from under the blazer.
"My eyes are up here Higurashi." She flushed at his words, the teasing in them making her huff as she glared up at him, her hands crossing over under her bust. She paused, taken aback at the lack of his fiery mask and facial hair, his jaw and upper lip had a bit of scruff but besides that his skin was smooth and a small smirk was planted on his lips.
Ignoring the way her heart fluttered in her chest she turned her nose up at him and his knowing smirk. "Yeah, yeah...so why are you here? Shouldn't you be doing hero work?" Her words held no ulterior motive, she was genuinely curious as to why he was randomly walking down the halls of UA instead of out in the field.
Enji merely shrugged as he placed his hands in his pockets gazing down at her smaller form. She was just as breathtaking as she had been in high school if not more so, their time apart had done nothing but help her become an even better version of herself. He mentally cursed himself for allowing himself to be friend zoned all those years ago. Yet that was the past and there was nothing to be done about it, instead he could only focus on the here and now.
"Haven't you heard? I'm taking a break from hero work to be a teacher. You do know All Might is also going to be teaching here...right? Or have you really been that out of the loop since you retired?" After her very public break up with her ex she had retired from hero work and dropped off the face of the earth for a year. In fact, he had been half tempted to reach out to her if only to make sure she was okay yet he hadn't gone through with it. It wouldn't do well if word got out that he was seeking her out, he had an image to upkeep.
In fact, that was why he was here at UA, after the news broke that All Might was going to be teaching at UA, he had pulled some strings and made a few threats to secure his own teaching spot at the school. He could not let All Might have yet another leg up over him, their rivalry was still going strong and once again took precedence over everything else in his life.
Kagome could only roll her eyes and shake her head at him, of course... "Honestly you two are still at it? Jeez..." A smile blossomed on her lips as she pushed some raven locks behind her ear. "Well, at least I won't be the only new teacher this year." She gave a light laugh as he arched an eyebrow at her. "I'll be teaching the hero support class. What about you?" She knew better then to ask about what class Toshi would be teaching, it would only annoy and irk the man before her.
Enji grunted, his gaze looking anywhere but at her. While he didn't want to admit it principal Nezu had pulled a fast one, no doubt annoyed that he had forced his way into the school. He had hoped to secure an easy class, something he could easily excel at. Thus proving he was a better teacher than All Might, yet he had been saddled with the one class he had hated while he himself was in school.
Kagome could only blink as Enji avoided looking at her, a small scowl on his lips. He was pouting, something that only a select few people would be able to recognize, it made her smile as she uncrossed her arms and took a step close to the larger male, rocking on her feet as she gazed up at him.
"Come on, spit it out, it can't be that bad." She laughed as he huffed, a few small flames escaping his nostrils.
"...Hero informatics..." He grumbled under his breath as she gave a small bark of laughter before quickly placing a hand over her lips to hide her smile, the other one reaching out to rest on one of his own crossed arms in a comforting motion.
"I'm sorry but it's just...hero informatics?! What did you do to piss off Principal Nezu?" She did her best to hold back any other laughter that wanted to escape her pink lips, of all the classes he could be teaching...it was the one he hated the most when they were in school!
Enji pulled his lip back in a low growl, embarrassed that she was laughing at him. He knew she wasn't doing it out of malice, but it still irked him. He hated failing at anything and that class had damn near ruined his GPA back in school, if not for her helping him he would have failed. He had thought it was a stupid class back then, who cared about rules and laws...heroes were supposed to save people! If that meant damaging property or breaking a few rules here and there, who cared?
"Look, I think you'll do great and if you need any help you know I'll happily lend a hand." Her voice was light as she stepped closer to him, her other hand moving to rest on his other arm. The contact was almost intimate as she smiled up at him, her hands giving his biceps a light encouraging squeeze.
She had no doubt he would do a great job, even if he hated the subject, she knew he would give it his all. He was a man who had never half assed anything, sure he would bitch and moan about it but he would give it his all. Once he had a goal in mind, he would do whatever it took to reach it. It was honestly probably why the rivalry between him and Toshi was still going.
Flushing lightly at the sincere smile on her lips he could only nod, his mouth suddenly dry. Old feelings began to stir in his chest, butterflies that had once been dead stirred to life in his stomach.
"Thanks...so-" He could only grit his teeth as a loud annoying voice cut him off mid-sentence. It echoed around them in the large empty hallway, why was that bastard always so damn loud?!
"Endeavor!" He could only grit his teeth as he turned to face a grinning All Might, a scowl on his lips as Kagome gave an excited squeal and peeked out from behind him, her hand still lightly resting on his arm.
"Toshi!"
