"And that about wraps it up." Jenny claps her hands as she finishes her lesson and demonstration. She rolls her shoulders back and fidgets with the thick shoulder strap of her lilac sundress. She purses her lips as she looks at the Titans and their practice copies of the arrangement she had guided them through. Beast Boy's is the nicest. She quickly inspects the other arrangements— Raven's is also fine. Starfire kept her flowers slightly too long, Cyborg's vase is slightly overfilled, and Robin… Jenny grimaces.
"Danny."
Danny perks up and drops the edge of his apron that he'd been fiddling with to look at her intently. She meets his gaze with a single quirked brow. Had he tuned her out?
"Yeah?"
"You're going to help Robin." To his credit, Danny copies Jenny's grimace almost exactly when he sees the way the flowers were cut. He nods and barely spares a glance and a thumbs-up to Beast Boy before practically jogging over to Robin's area and looking over the arrangement with a furrowed brow.
Jenny preoccupies herself with providing general pointers to the other Titans.
Danny lets out a low whistle between his teeth after looking at the arrangement. Robin crosses his arms, and even through the mask, Danny can tell he's averting his gaze.
"I messed it up that bad, huh."
"Uh…" Danny gives it another once-over, trying to find a good quality. "I mean, you kept the water levels to the right level and you put the flowers in the right place. You just have to be more careful about cutting the stems. And more gentle." He points to a red tulip that leans over the edge of the vase limply. "You might be snapping the stems by accident?"
Robin clenches his fist a few times and looks down at them curiously.
"I guess I am. How do I know it's not too long, though?"
Danny picks out a pink carnation with a stem that can't be any longer than four inches.
"Well, definitely longer than this," he says. "Hm… each flower might have to be a different length to fit correctly, but generally speaking—" Danny reaches for Robin's hand and draws an imaginary line from the tips of Robin's fingers to the base of his palm, "—you're going to want your stems about this length or longer."
Robin nods and wriggles his hand out of Danny's grip. Danny watches with a confused expression as Robin looks at Danny's hand and then turns his head to glance at Beast Boy, who is on this second arrangement and humming to himself. Danny tears his gaze away from Beast Boy to focus back on Robin, who sighs down at his arrangement.
"I should've taken Beast Boy's offer," he mumbles.
"Huh?"
Robin pokes the tulip with the snapped stem. "Oh, Beast Boy was practicing all week and kept offering to show us how to do it all. I don't know how you did it— it's rare for Beast Boy to apply himself like that. The Titans Tower is covered in little bouquets and whatnot."
Danny reaches for the basket holding the flowers and another container. He fills the container with solution and cuts the stem of a carnation, telegraphing his movement to Robin before putting the flower in the vase and nudging the basket closer to Robin. Robin copies his movements and puts in a second carnation.
"Oh." Danny tears a leaf off of the carnation Robin handed him.
"You must be a pretty good teacher."
Danny ignores how his face warms up at the statement. "No, not really. Beast Boy is just a great student. He's always asking questions and he's probably just really talented. What I did was nothing close to how Jenny explained things— he's a quick learner, you know?" Danny reigns in his rambling and nudge's Robins arm. "No, you cut that way too short. Length of your hand or longer, remember?"
Robin mutters an apology and takes another tulip, cutting it to the right length this time.
"I'm going to tank your business if I keep messing up like this," Robin grouses. Danny shrugs.
"Beast Boy's really good at making small bouquets with the short stems. We'll just save those for him. Maybe you'd do better with another arrangement?"
"No, I just need to focus." Robin's jaw tenses as he looks down at the desk, but after a few seconds he sneaks a glance to the next table. Danny wonders what could possibly be so interesting on that table—
"How did you decide upon the sculpting of flowers as your vocation?"
Ah. Danny let himself smile. Of course.
Starfire hovers a few inches off the ground as she watches Jenny demonstrate how to cut the stems at the right length. Her eyes shine with amazement as Jenny turns the basket on the table into an arrangement, narrating each step.
Jenny laughs nervously and flicks some of her dark, thick braids behind her shoulder. Her smile is so large she squints as if to make more space for it on her face.
"Aw, I'd never though about it that way. It is kind of like sculpting though, huh?" Jenny shrugs as she carefully fluffs out the bright leaves. "I've just always liked flowers."
Starfire nods along like every word coming out of Jenny's mouth is an important piece of information. "Is this the only career involving flowers available?"
Jenny shrugs again. "No, there's other stuff, but the idea of being a botanist just didn't call to me the same way."
"I will have to ask you more about these professions in the future!"
Jenny hums agreeably.
Danny huffs out a small laugh. Seems Jenny doesn't know how to deal with fans. Out of the corner of his eye, he can tell Robin is still staring at Starfire like her excitement holds all the answers to the universe. It's cute, but Danny really needs Robin to focus, so he leans forward on the desk and blocks Robin's view of Starfire. Robin shakes his head as if to clear his thoughts.
"Hey, eyes on your own paper, Mister," Danny jokes. "You can look at Starfire all day some other time."
Robin turns an impressive shade of red. He turns his head back to where Beast Boy is, and Beast Boy is now on a third arrangement. Danny nods, impressed. Beast Boy notices he's being stared at and turns to flash Danny and Robin a large grin.
Danny finds himself returning it. "If we're ever hiring, I might have to steal you from the Titans."
Beast Boy flushes bashfully and scratches the back of his neck. "Aw, shucks."
Jenny snorts.
"I need coworkers that won't tune out the world while talking to each other."
The pleasant warmth in Danny's face turns into a fire and he coughs dryly. "Robin, are you almost done?"
Robin skips the scissors entirely and snaps the stem of the carnation in his hand. It almost comes off cleanly, but the gloves keep him from using his nails. Danny trims it for him.
"If you want to snap the stems with your hands, you can't have the gloves on."
Robin takes the scissors and cuts the next few flowers at the correct length. Some come out of the basket too short, and Robin gives Danny a smug smile as if to say 'see, it wasn't me this time'. Danny rolls his eyes and helps him with the arrangement.
By the time Robin finishes his first decent arrangement, everyone else is already done. Beast Boy is stealing the discarded flowers from everyone's desks. Robin's has… more than usual.
"Okay, let's get these into storage." Jenny opens the flower morgue and gestures for the Titans to carry their arrangements.
Beast Boy stores his quickly and takes over Robin's old table to work on bouquets made out of the discarded flowers.
"Beast Boy cheated, in my opinion," Cyborg says. "I mean, he got extra lessons from him." He points to Danny accusingly. Danny shrugs and crosses his arms.
"Hey, cheater or no, it's good for business."
"Should've approached Danny during his office hours like Beast Boy here did," Jenny jests with a small chuckle. Danny gives her a confused look. Jenny sighs. "Right, none of you have been to college."
"I did dual enrollment," Robin pipes up. "Uh, your joke was…" he glances at Starfire, who is staring at Jenny with a friendly smile. "Funny."
"Tough crowd." She rolls her shoulders tiredly. "Well, I think we did enough for one day? I've heard people stop absorbing information after a while, and we've definitely been at this for more than an hour at this point." Jenny leans against the table behind her. "Also, I can't be on my feet this long. Phew."
"Are you okay?" Danny frantically looks for the nearest chair. He drags it from the corner of the room and guides Jenny to sit on it.
"Oh, I'll be fine, but thanks for the chair." Jenny relaxes into the unforgiving plastic. "Class is dismissed or something like that."
"Surely there's something we can do?" Robin asks.
Beast Boy steps toward Danny and Jenny with colorful bunches in his hands.
"I know it doesn't fix anything at all, but I made these from… well, mostly Robin's leftover flowers pile." He gives the biggest bouquet to Jenny and the second one to Danny. "I'll just take this one back to the Tower," Beast Boy says about the last bouquet in his hand. It's the smallest. He probably ran out of flowers while working on it. Jenny takes her carefully.
"Thank you, Beast Boy."
Danny holds his close to his chest with a shy smile. "Thanks."
Cyborg snorts, drawing everyone's attention to him. "What? It's—" Cyborg laughs, "—our green bean keeps giving flowers to florists. I thought you said you wanted to stop doing that?" Cyborg asks Beast Boy. Beast Boy doesn't look embarrassed in the least, instead puffing his chest out and wagging his finger at Cyborg.
"Oh, there's more." Beast Boy reaches into his pocket and grabs Danny's free hand. He plops something in it and gestures for Danny to look at it. Danny opens his hand.
It's a keychain with a cartoonish plastic gray cat. It's sitting with its tail curled around its body. It looks like Bud, in the way that cartoonish keychains look like things.
"Oh, this is pretty."
"I got it for you. As thanks for teaching me." Beast Boy crosses his arms confidently, careful with the bouquet in his hand. Danny puts the keychain in his pocket.
"I'll use it all the time. Well, whenever I use keys, I mean. Because it's a keychain, so obviously my keys go on it…" Danny glares down at Jenny, who's chuckling. "At least you feel well enough to laugh at me," Danny mutters.
"Mhm." Jenny sits up straight in the chair. "Does anyone have any questions before you all leave?"
Most of the Titans shake their head. Starfire looks like she wants to continue asking questions about plant-related careers, but Robin hooks his arm around hers and shakes his head. Starfire follows his cue and shakes her head as well.
"Well then, I'll see you all next week." Jenny makes eye contact with Beast Boy. "Well, I might see some of you sooner than that if you remember to say hi to me for once."
Beast Boy ducks his head and laughs nervously. "I'll try…"
Jenny carefully stands from the chair and leans on Danny. "Well, I've had enough excitement for one day. Out you go, everybody."
"I'll see you on… Monday?" Beast Boy asks. He phrases it like Monday is years away instead of only two days from now. Danny nods with a small smile.
As the Titans leave, Danny swears he sees Cyborg elbowing Beast Boy with a teasing grin. The doors close behind them and Jenny sighs in relief and exhaustion.
"You're cooking and doing dishes tonight," Jenny says.
"Yeah, of course. Let's get you to lay down for a bit."
