Sky stopped short and his hand reached for his blaster. The windows were too heavily tinted to see inside. The car didn't budge as Sky slowly backed away toward the garage. When Sky reached the staircase, he sprinted up them as quickly as possible. When he reached his level, he peered over the side of the garage, and the car was gone.
His heart leaped. Was it following him up the levels? Was it a coincidence?
In a flash, Sky revved his speeder and burst out of the garage. He kept an eye over his shoulder, but the car did not reappear. He thought through the day as he returned to SPD headquarters. How many black four-door sedans were there in the city? Probably hundreds of thousands. It wouldn't be unusual for him to see more than one in a day. At least, it shouldn't be unusual. Yet, he couldn't stop scanning his surroundings.
He didn't spot anything else suspicious on his way back. He parked his speeder and was trying to decide whether or not to tell the team what happened. His gut said something was wrong, but his head told him he was paranoid.
When Sky walked into the staging room, he found Z, Syd, and Jack talking in hushed tones.
"What's going on?"
The three cadets looked at him and motioned for him to close the door.
"Another of Bridge's operations was attacked. The undercover agent is missing." Jack told him.
"There's more," Z added. "Cruger just told us that since Bridge went missing, there haven't been any more anonymous noise complaints at abandoned buildings."
Sky let that sink in.
"So Bridge was the intended target after all."
Syd nodded.
"It looks that way."
Jack sighed and rubbed his face.
"Anyone else miss the days where we just battle it out with the bad guys?"
A chorus of agreement followed. This cloak and dagger stuff wasn't what they typically dealt with. B Squad generally handled situations head on, but this?
"What does the intelligence department say about all of this?" Sky asked Jack. Jack shrugged.
"They haven't heard any chatter about abducting SPD operatives." Jack swiped a file off the desk behind him. "Nothing on the usual channels at least. There was some chatter about suspected "rats," but nothing of this scale."
Syd took the file from Jack and gave it a once-over.
"We need to know what the hottest targets are." Syd pulled five files out from under a stack of papers. "We have the Wilson case, Operation Dragon Sting, Operation Opulent, the Haradia case, and Operation Silent Storm."
"But which one is of the most importance?" Z asked. "All of these ops are high profile."
Syd flipped through each case.
"We need to ask someone who helped create each operation." Syd replied.
Syd looked up at Sky.
"We need to ask Bridge."
At one time, asking Bridge would have been a great idea. However, Sky wasn't sure Bridge even remembered these ops existed, let alone which would be a bigger target. If Bridge couldn't help them, that would only make his mental state worse.
"I'm not sure that's a good idea right now." Sky spoke up. "He's supposed to be taking it easy. Let's at least wait until he's released from the hospital first."
Jack shook his head.
"We can't wait. Any one of these ops could be hit next. By waiting we're putting lives at risk."
Syd stepped up.
"Sky, we have to at least try. If he doesn't remember, he doesn't remember."
Sky looked to Z for support, but she shrugged, confirming that she agreed with Syd and Jack.
Sky snatched the files out of Syd's hand.
"Fine. But I'm asking him and I'm waiting until tomorrow."
Sky looked at the others, daring them to challenge him.
Jack held up his hands and went back to his gadgets.
Syd watched Sky leave. He'd always been hard-headed and a stickler for the rules. With Bridge in his…condition… it seemed like Sky had been more grumpy these past few weeks. She thought back to when Bridge first disappeared. She'd never seen Sky act like that.
The lights flashed and the sirens wailed. Syd could barely think. Bridge? Missing? This was the second time it'd happened, and the last time…he almost died. Cruger called from somewhere far off in the distance. Jack and Z sat to Syd's left. Sky sat to her right. It took Syd several moments to realize that Cruger wasn't far off, but standing right in front of them. His lips were moving, but Syd wasn't processing his words.
Jack stood up.
"Come on, we're not needed here anymore. We should get out of the way."
Though his voice was steady, Syd could tell that Jack was far from alright. He was probably just putting on a brave face for the rest of them. That's what he did.
Syd expected Sky to give up a fight. Afterall, a few hours ago he was screaming about wanting to stay put. But once Syd put a hand on his shoulder, Sky stood and followed behind. Cruger didn't want them to drive back themselves, so a red-haired cadet drove them back. None of them said a word.
Syd didn't see much of Sky the following day, but when she did spot him, he looked like a zombie. That scared her almost more than Bridge missing. Sky had a fire inside of him that roared whenever someone he cared about was threatened. Now? It looked like that fire had been put out completely. For the first time since she'd known him, Sky looked defeated.
The door to their impromptu-command center opened. Boom gave them his goofy half smile. Syd had to admire him. Even through all of this, Boom kept his cheery demeanor. She didn't know how, but she wouldn't question it. Having Boom around lightened the mood significantly.
"Hi guys! Uh, Jack said you could use my help?"
Jack gestured for Boom to come take a look at their notes for a containment chamber.
Syd frowned. Now that she thought about it, why was B-Squad working on the chamber and not the engineering team? Or the intelligence team? Was this Cruger's way of keeping them busy? She looked around at everyone working. Maybe Cruger just figured they'd end up working on it anyway, so he might as well sanction it.
Either way, Syd was grateful for Boom's help. Without Bridge, the rest of the team were pretty clueless about electronics.
Syd hoped they could help Bridge. And she hoped they could do it in time to save the other undercover agents.
Bridge groaned and rolled over. A familiar pain welled up in his head. Wait, familiar? Why was this familiar? Why was this much pain familiar?
An image popped into Bridge's mind. His gloveless hands were strapped into two poles which kept them outstretched in front of him. And there was a person in front of him. The person was in pain, and Bridge was feeling all of it. And beside this person stood a green-skinned alien…
A beeping sounded. A man in a dark room stared at a monitor. He clicked an intercom button.
"Sir, he's trying to remember. He's almost gotten a hold of Conrad."
He was met with a grunt.
"It seems he's unconsciously fighting us. He's remembering far more, far quicker than we planned." There was a short silence. "No matter, send another disruption pulse. Keep him in the dark as long as possible."
The man in the room pressed another button, and the sensors silenced, signaling that Bridge was falling back to sleep once again with his memories still fighting to surface.
