That evening, after Blueheart brought Zyrah home, she made her way to one of the dragon barns where Toothless, Stormfly, Hookfang, Meatlug, Barf n' Belch, and Dusk were all hanging out. Killgrave and Lightbolt eagerly followed her.
How'd the day go with Zyrah's birth parents? Killgrave immediately asked.
I'll explain in a moment. Just come with me, the others need to hear this. The three landed in front of the barn, and Toothless almost instantly got up to greet her, which did not go unnoticed by Stormfly or Meatlug.
Blueheart!
Hello, Toothless. She smiled.
How'd today go?
Killgrave already asked, but I wanted to tell all of you at once.
We're all ears. Stormfly said. With the invite, Blueheart relayed all the information she remembered from spending the day with Zyrah, Einar, and Ragnhild. Blueheart's pupils narrowed when she said how Einar wanted to use her to find the colony.
They want to threaten my family, the last of us. It pisses me off. She growled, her split spines rattling in anger.
So what're you gonna do about it? Lightbolt asked.
I haven't figured out the details yet, but either way I'm going to protect my rider, even if it means I have to protect her from the very people who brought her into the world.
Now that's hardcore loyalty. Hookfang remarked.
We all agree, though. As dumb as they can be, we love our riders, and we'd do what's necessary to protect them. Dusk assured.
I will say, the one idea I have is a rendezvous at the colony island. This got all the dragon's attention.
A rendezvous?! Are you sure? Toothless exclaimed.
I am. I can trust you guys to help protect the last of the Night Furies, and I know your riders will as well, especially Hiccup.
Damn right.
So what then?
Well, let me demonstrate the location. She pushed away straw to form a rough circle, and using her claw, she began to draw out the outlines of Firewind and surrounding islands for a point of reference. Then she outlined the shape of her colony's island, just south of Firewind.
It's about a three-day flight south of Firewind. If the winds treat you well, give or take it might be two days. Einar and Ragnhild will be using their ship, and I doubt they'll allow me to keep Zyrah away from the hull.
I have a feeling that Zyrah will quickly figure out what their real plan is. Hiccup and the others broke into the ship and found out their intentions.
I know she will. We'll find a way to catch them by surprise. I'm still working out the details, but I should be able to meet you guys there after about a day.
I respect and admire the confidence. Toothless commented with a gummy grin. She just rolled her eyes. If dragons could blush, she'd be bright red.
Elsewhere, Konall came over to the Trygstad household to hang with Zyrah and Rurik for a bit. Like the dragons with Blueheart, he was dying to know how it went with Einar and Ragnhild.
On Zyrah's side of the bedroom that she shared with Rurik, Zyrah let him take a seat on her bed. He averted his eyes to let her change even though she was behind a partition.
"So how'd it go?" There was a grunt as she pulled off her socks.
"Oh, it wasn't… terrible. Awkward at best."
"I hope they weren't total assholes." She came around the partition pulling her hair out of its ponytail and handing him a comb.
"Nah, Ragnhild was actually kind of sweet. I learned that she and I are both the youngest child of multiple siblings, so that was nice to learn. She was also eager to show me more of my cultural heritage."
"That's nice! What about Einar?" She frowned.
"Hard to say, I dunno what his problem is, but he's very standoffish. I could tell he didn't like it when I asked him about where he came from, very different from Ragnhild."
"Bad childhood maybe?" She shrugged.
"He said otherwise, it was short but he claimed he had an ideal childhood. So… I don't know."
"Hm, interesting."
"I also agreed to go with them to learn about them and my background," she finally said. He almost dropped the comb, accidentally tugging her hair.
"Ow!"
"Sorry sorry. Uh… you're gonna… go, with them?" He couldn't believe it.
"Yeah… it took me some time to think about it. But don't worry, Blueheart will be with me the whole time." Konall recovered from his shock only for it to turn into concern.
"Wait, they're letting you bring her along?"
"I'm as surprised as you are. But at least she'll be with me." He managed a smile at that. When he or Rurik couldn't be there, Blueheart always was.
"Well, I'm comforted that she'll be with you. Though I wish I could, I know they probably won't like me, heh." He chuckled nervously at his remark, but Zyrah gave him a smirk.
"I'm sure they'd like you as much as I do," he noticed her cheeks flush a bit, "but y'know, I think it's best I have this time with them before the wind takes them away again." She scooted closer to him, almost against his chest, and he hoped she couldn't hear his pounding heart.
"Wait, you like me?" He realized, eyes widening. The pair stared at each other, both eyes wide, and cheeks red.
"Uh, hehe… yeah. I do… I have for a long time…" She quietly admitted, playing with her hair, twirling it around her finger. It was like a weight was lifted from his chest as they became aware of their feelings for each other.
"Holy shit… I was so worried- I thought you only saw me as your best friend!"
"Well yes, of course! But I've always had a thing for you!" There was a pause as Konall thought about his next move. After gazing into her eyes, he slowly leaned forward, hoping she wouldn't back away. But to his delight, she met him in the middle, pressing her lips against his.
The air was still as he slowly pressed more against her, lifting his hand and grazing his hand on her jaw, eliciting a soft exhale from her. She tilted her head, pushing against him.
It was just as amazing as they'd both imagined. For their entire childhood they had secretly pined for each other, but had never had an opportunity to express their feelings, or, were unsure if it was wise to pursue said feelings. And now, here they finally could.
His hand rested on her waist, pulling her tighter against his abdomen, and just as his hand was about to slide down, the sound of footsteps approaching the bedroom caught their attention, and they pulled apart immediately, both bright red. Zyrah grazed her fingers over her lips, in a blissful daze from what just happened.
Rurik opened the door and stepped inside, upon seeing his sister and best friend sitting next to each other, both flushed, he didn't have to do mental gymnastics to figure out what just happened. But he knew it would've happened sooner or later. That said, after a quick glance, he went to his side of the bedroom, giving the two privacy.
"I uh-... I should probably go," Konall finally said, laughing nervously. Zyrah wordlessly nodded in agreement, walking him out of the bedroom and to the front door.
"I'll… see you tomorrow." She whispered to him, a bashful smile still smeared across her face.
"You bet." He gave her a quick peck on the cheek and headed out. She closed the door behind him, whirling around, leaning against the door.
Eðla and Halvar noticed the expression on their daughter's face.
"What's with the grin?" Halvar questioned with a raised eyebrow. Zyrah looked up at her father with wide eyes.
"Oh! Hah! Nothin'!" She replied in a higher vocal tone than intended. As she made her way upstairs, it was evident how delighted she was with the extra energy in her step.
"What was that?" Halvar exclaimed, scratching his head. Eðla couldn't help but laugh and roll her eyes at the cluelessness.
"Oh, Halvar… remember how Olsen was when he and Dalla first got together?" She explained with a knowing smile. With that having been so long ago, it took Halvar a second, but it finally dawned on him.
"Oohhh…"
