Chapter Twelve: Breathing
Draco wasn't sure how long he had slept but when he woke the pain from his head had gone. Outside his little room was complete silence and the usual light that snuck in from the crack under the door was absent. Must be early morning.
He looked at the camera in the corner of the room in front of him and then at the other one in the other corner. Assuming that there was someone watching him all the time and there was no way of knowing who, he decided to take the cameras out. He laid back down and turned his head towards hoping it would be enough to not raise any suspicion.
He closed his eyes and focused on the camera in the corner at the back of the room. He could feel the small electrical current running through it, but he didn't want it turned off, he needed to trick it. There was a spell he liked to use on the portraits in his family's house. Petrificus Totalus combined with Stupefy worked well to prevent them talking to his father about what he had been doing throughout the day. There was no one for him to knock out so just the body binding spell would be needed this time. Although… do cameras work the same as portraits back home? Well, the translation doesn't suggest anything against it… petra is rock, ficus making or doing and then totus whole. It's just petrifying the camera. Just freezing it on what it's currently showing. It'll be fiiinne…
Draco refocused on the camera and imagined casting the spell with his wand. He turned onto his right side to hide the markings and that he was moving his hand. Repeating the movements, he chanted the spell in his mind trying to push his magic outwards. It took a few tries, but his arm slowly started to warm up and he could feel his magic flowing through his muscles. He focused on the feeling of his magic moving and directed it towards the camera. A small jolt ran up his arm when the spell landed on the device. There was no way for Draco to tell if it had worked without looking at whatever the agent used to watch him. Going with the hope that it worked he repeated the process for the other camera.
He stayed still for a moment, waiting for something to happen, for someone to come running to the room to fix the cameras, but nothing happened. No one came yelling at him, the door remained shut and the lights off outside. Standing up he quietly pulled open the small drawer in the bedside table and took his shrunken school trunk out. He placed it in the middle of the floor and enlarged it back to its original size, pausing for a moment to find it still silent outside. He climbed down into the trunk emerging in the long hallway. Entering the library, second door on the left, Draco started searching for a book of healing magic.
Eventually he found a whole section dedicated to healing magic with a variety of books. From potions to spells, even a couple of books on muggle healing practices.
This might take a minute…
Phil made his way to the office that had been dedicated to monitoring Draco with two cups of coffee, having decided to take over from the night watch agents this morning. He had sent a quick text to the Director in case he was expecting to see Phil in his office first thing like usual.
He gently knocked on the door before entering. The very tired looking agent gave him a small smile when he handed over the coffee.
"Nothing to report again sir. Only thing different was he woke up earlier than usual." The agent started, "I think he realised it was still early, he just laid back down to sleep."
"Alright, thank you. You can go now I'll take over." Phil patted his shoulder as he took the seat in front of the monitors. The agent nodded, standing up and stretching his arms.
"Should I let Director Fury know where you are?" Phil shook his head and told him that he had it covered already. It was barely 30 minutes since the other agent left that the Director joined him. Phil downed the last of his coffee and turned towards his boss.
"Anything good on?"
"Nah he's just sleeping right now." Fury pulled a spare chair from the corner of the room to join him, handing a tablet to Phil as he sat down. Phil looked down at it and saw blueprints for a new version of Phase 2. "Maria's been busy then…"
They talked about the advancements of Phase 2 for goodness knows how long, with Phil glancing at the screen every so often. It must've been an hour when Phil's eyes glanced at the screen and a frown slowly formed. Fury looked over to the screen to see Draco still sleeping.
"What is it?" Phil didn't respond. "Coulson?"
"He's… he's not breathing…" Without a second's hesitation Phil ran out of the room, Fury hot on his heels. They sped down the stairs and through hallways, agents darting out of their way. The two of them burst into the room just in time to see Draco halfway out a large trunk that wasn't there before.
"…Shit…"
Draco couldn't stop himself from cursing when he saw the two men stood in front of him. He stepped out of the trunk and waved his hand over it, shrinking it once more. They just stared as Draco picked up the trunk and placed it in his pocket.
"So… how are we this morning?" Draco smiled awkwardly at them.
"Well, y'know beautiful morning, sun shining so I'm pretty PISSED OFF!" Fury walked towards Draco, voice rising with every word. Draco stumbled backwards trying to sidestep out of the way.
"Oh, so you are a vampire then?"
"Draco." Phil warned him.
"SO, YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?"
"Uh no sir." Draco had backed himself into a corner of the room.
"I have eyes everywhere, ears everywhere else, there's nothing I don't know. Nothing." Phil shot Draco a look, one probably saying shut up.
"And you think you can play games here. Control the situation? WRONG. I control it not some kid."
The room fell into silence and the temptation to apparate away was very strong, but then where does he go?
"Well?" Fury raised an eyebrow.
"Well what?"
"You gonna explain what you were doing?"
"What was it? You have eyes everywhere and ears everywhere else? Figure it out." Draco spat out. Coulson paled and quickly moved forward to grab Fury's shoulder.
"EXCUSE ME?!"
"I thought there was nothing you don't know" Draco leaned against the wall he had backed himself against and crossed his arms over his chest. He tried to look as relaxed and bored as possible, even when his was heart beating like mad. He was going to point out that Fury was close to popping a blood vessel with the way his veins were popping up in anger but stopped himself right before. Don't push your luck too hard…
"We are going to leave for now and you are going to stay EXACTLY where you are, got it?"
Phil had to jog to catch up with Fury once they had left the room. It had been a while since he had seen his boss get this angry.
"So, what's the plan?" Phill asked just about managing to keep up with him.
"Coffee."
"Right…"
