Hello, my lovely readers. I know that I have been gone for some time but I have a very good explanation in the end note. See you there…

Chapter 25: Some People Don't Want to Stay Buried

The day that Elena Gilbert died Caroline decided to go to the hospital to get some blood bags. She wasn't quite sure why she didn't just fill her bag and leave immediately. It was like instinct that drove her to look around before punching the elevator button down to the basement. She needed closure. To see Elena, one last time, to say good-bye. When she walked into the morgue, she found she wasn't the only one who had yet to let go.

Damon had yanked some poor person's corpse off the slab next to Elena's. He was sitting cross legged, staring down at Elena's ashen features. Taking a swig from his flask, he greeted Caroline, "Hey there, Blondie. Come to see what your boy did to my girl?" His words were slurred and his eyes were bloodshot when he looked up at Caroline with a slow grin.

"It was an accident, Damon," Caroline replied, coming over to look down at Elena.

"She looks peaceful. Doesn't she?" Damon asked, stroking Elena's cheek. "She looks so damned peaceful. I just want to lay down beside her and go to sleep. But I can't, Caroline. Do you want to know why?"

Caroline shook her head as Damon rolled Elena's body over to reveal deep gashes to her corpse. "See that?" Damon asked. "Isn't that pretty, Care?" Damon continued to question her. "I kept thinking while I was down here about how I could kill him. How I would squeeze his windpipe until his eyes popped out and he choked on his own breath. Then I thought about how I could torture him. Do you know how long it takes to bleed out, Caroline, when you make it reeeeaaaaal slow? Or I could just rip his heart out like how I felt when I saw Elena fall out of that damned window."

Jumping up off the slab, Damon landed beside Caroline. She turned to stare at him. "Then it came to me. I'm going to kill you instead." Damon hauled back and backhanded Caroline across the room. "I'm going to take my time and enjoy this. Oh, and there is the added benefit of knowing you won't be hurting my brother like Kat did all those years ago."

"How old are you really, Damon?" Caroline asked him, hoping to distract him while she looked for a weapon. Jumping behind a table and waiting for Damon to approach, Caroline wondered if she could make it out of this one.

"Oh, honey, I'm, let's see Civil War period. So, about hundred and fifty something." Damon drawled before leaping on top of the table separating him and Caroline. Caroline gave the table a hard kick causing it go flying into the wall of lockers right under Elena's. Damon fell off and landed face down. Growling, he got back to his feet as Caroline tried to open the door.

Grabbing Caroline by the shirt collar, Damon threw her back across the room into the closed lockers with all those corpses which made Caroline shiver. She may be one, but that didn't mean she wanted to be this close to them. Damon sped over, jerking Caroline up by her hair, he pulled her toward Elena's corpse. "Look at her," he growled. "In what world do you and that dog get to live and she doesn't?"

Sobbing, Caroline shoved her elbow into Damon's chest, breaking his ribs. Turning around, she punched Damon in the face, feeling his cheekbone crack under the pressure of her fist. "She wouldn't want this," Caroline yelled at Damon.

"What the hell would you know about what she wanted?" Damon asked, tears dripping down his cheeks. "You weren't her friend."

"She didn't even know I was alive until we started college together," Caroline yelled back at him.

"Yes. She did," Damon roared. "She held doors for you. She freaking looked to make sure people didn't trip you in the hallways at your high school just because they thought it was funny. She knew you were proud so she kept all the little things she did to make your day a little easier to herself because she didn't want to make you angry. So, she kept her martyry mouth shut. Cause that's my Lena. The do-gooder. And what does she get; a boyfriend who dumps her because she nagged too many times about folding the damned socks."

"Now, I am going to do one more thing she's going to be pissed about." Striding toward Caroline, Damon wrapped a hand around her throat while shoving the other one into her chest. He wrapped his hand around her heart and started to pull when they heard a gasp.

Staring into Caroline's eyes, Damon's eyes widened as he looked up to see Elena gasping on the morgue slab. Jerking his hand out of Caroline's chest, he sped over to Elena's side. "Lena?"

Sitting up, Caroline forced herself to her feet to stare at what should be a dead girl. "What happened?" Elena asked, hyperventilating. "Damon, where am I? Where are my clothes?" Damon stripped off his jacket and handed it to Elena, who pulled it on.

"How is this possible?" Damon asked, seemingly more to himself than to Caroline.

Sighing, Caroline bit her lip. "Me," she said weakly.

"What?" Damon demanded, staring at Caroline, who backed away from him expecting him to attack her again.

"I slipped vampire blood into her and Bonnie's drinks in their fridgerator. There's just been so much that's happened lately that I was trying to take precautions." Caroline didn't admit she got the idea from when she had allowed Klaus to feed from her. That to be honest, had been another just another 'in case plan.' She would never tell Klaus that.

"Vampire blood?" Elena repeated, staring at Caroline.

"Yeah," Caroline replied. "You're going to be a vampire."

"You're in transition," Damon added. "You have to feed to complete the transition."

"I don't want to be a vampire," Elena whimpered, looking from Caroline to Damon. "My parents hated vampires."

"I know, Lena. But you have to feed. It's the only way. Either that. Or you die. And this time you don't come back." Damon explained slowly, staring at the former head cheerleader.
"But I wanted to have a human life. I wanted to have family. I wanted to grow old." Elena told them, her lower lip wobbling.

"I know, Elena," Caroline told her. "I did, too. I didn't want this but I was sick and then I died. I woke up alone. But you have us. Okay. You have me and Damon and we'll help you with whatever you need us to do."

"Let me die," Elena begged.

"No," Damon snarled. "I had to sit here and look at you like that for the last six hours. I was stupid and selfish and I'm sorry, Lena. Please, don't give up on me. Live for me," Damon begged, pressing his forehead to Elena's, waiting for her answer.

Caroline opened her bag and pulled out a blood bag. She handed it to Damon, knowing that the bloodlust would be too much for Elena once she saw the bag and smelled its contents. Part of her felt like it was wrong to pressure Elena to make up her mind but Caroline didn't care. She was tired of seeing her friends in pain.

Whether Caroline liked to admit it or not, Damon was her friend. What hurt him, hurt her. Nearly losing Elena had driven him mad mere minutes ago. Losing her again might send him over the edge to the point that there would be no pulling him back. She understood. If something ever happened to Klaus she would be just as bad. Maybe she would be worse.

Biting into the blood bag, Damon took a sip and looked at Elena, who stared at the bag her eyes widening as her hand went up. Damon placed the bag in Elena's hand and she brought it to her lips tentatively before sucking the liquid down. Caroline pulled out another and handed it to Elena.

"Oh, this is so wrong," Elena gasped, setting the bag down and then she looked at the locker above, her face twisted. Slowly turning to face, Damon she frowned, "You bit me the first time we met."

"Yeah. Thought you were someone else," Damon replied with a shrug.

"Who?" Elena asked, narrowing her eyes before hopping off of the slab and taking a step toward Damon in a less than friendly way.

"Lena, that would be your emotions being greatly heightened because of the transition and the whole "being a vampire" thing. Don't do anything you'll regret later," Damon told Elena, holding up his hands while backing away from her as Elena sped forward and grabbed him by the shirt turning him. She slammed him into the lockers.

"What else did you make me forget, Damon?" Elena demanded as she pushed him up the lockers.

"You'll get all the memories he compelled you to forget back soon." Caroline informed Elena. "I know I did.

"Yeah, so you can let go now. I'll take you back to the dorm. You need to rest. Besides we need a cover story to deal with how you're still alive." Damon said, easing Elena's fingers off his shirt and his feet fell to the ground.

Sighing heavily, Elena wrapped the jacket around her body more tightly. "I need something to wear."

"We'll get you some nice scrubs, Dr. Gilbert," Damon told her.

Shaking her head, Elena stared up at Damon. "Stop calling me that. I'll never be a doctor after this. I can't be around bleeding people."

"Sure you can," Caroline told her as they got on the elevator and went in search of scrubs. "You can be like the dad in the Twilight books, only female."

"Vampires who sparkle, are lame," Damon told them.

"No, they're not," Caroline argued.

"We don't sparkle?" Elena murmured, looking disappointed. "But that would have been so cool." Damon gave Elena an evil look and she smiled. "That was a joke."

"And here I forgot to laugh. Ha ha," Damon replied snidely and Elena elbowed him. He rubbed at the spot where she hit him.

"I guess we're going back to Whitmore," Elena announced once she was dressed and they were on their way back to the dorms.

"Yup," Damon said. "I'm not sure you should be sleeping in the room with Bonnie tonight."

"Why?" Elena asked. "I have to see her. She has to know that I'm still alive."

"Technically. No. You're not." Caroline reminded Elena, who frowned. "And Damon's right. At the moment you're going to crave blood and being away from your friends would be a really good idea. Damon, maybe you should take her back to your home while she's in transition like you did with me."

Damon grinned. "You just said that I'm right about something."

"Yeah. I did. And you're avoiding." Caroline snapped at him.

"No. I. Am. Not." Damon stated slowly, glaring at Caroline.

Glaring back at Damon, Caroline started to question him. "Did you do something to Stefan?"

"No!" Damon replied quickly. Too quickly.

"Damon, what did you do?" Caroline asked him, her voice rising as they approached the dormitory.

Damon rolled his eyes. "I might have snapped his neck and locked him in his room with a dead puppy."

"Ew. And why?" Caroline asked as Elena's face wrinkled up.

"Well, he was annoying me because he came home after I ate a couple of sorority sisters. I snapped his neck and locked him in his room because he pissed me off. The puppy was to make up. He likes puppy blood." Damon said with a shrug.

"Seriously?" Caroline's nose wrinkled as she and Elena gave each other grossed out looks.

"Would it be better if I told you it was a moose? There you go. Stefy ate Bullwinkle. Happy now?" Damon asked as the two female vampires rolled their eyes.

"I guess you can stay with me, Rebekah and Hayley tonight," Caroline said as she unlocked the door to her room. Damon started to walk inside when Caroline held up a hand. "You're not staying here."

Damon pouted staring at Caroline. "You won't even know I'm there."

"Yes, I would. Now, you go away." Walking into her room, Caroline noticed that no one was there. That was good because that meant she didn't have to explain what was going yet.

Then the door reopened. And it was like the flood gates had ruptured as Rebekah, Hayley, Elijah, Kol, Marcel and Klaus came walking inside. Klaus fell on his ass and then began to laugh, pointing at Elena. "She's back," he shouted before Marcel turned around, yanking Klaus off the floor with one arm and shutting the door with his foot.

"Let me guess, vampire?" Marcel asked drily, staring at Elena, his eyebrows raised.

"Yes," Caroline said as Rebekah came over to peer at Elena.

"Did it hurt?" Rebekah asked, staring at Elena, her eyes wide with curiosity.

Elena blinked. "You mean dying?" Rebekah nodded slowly. "Yes," Elena replied. "Why?"

Shaking her head, Rebekah sat down on her bed. "I don't know."

"I killed you," Klaus told Elena, beaming. "I bloody well killed you and there you are talking to my sister like it's any other night." Getting up, Klaus wobbled slightly before poking Elena in the cheek. "Good. I thought you were a ghost or a nightmare. Maybe you are a nightmare. Am I dreaming?"

"Yes, you're dreaming," Rebekah said as Klaus sat down and Rebekah fell on her face on top of Hayley's bed. "Wake me when this is over," she moaned and then fell asleep.

Rolling her eyes, Hayley looked down at Rebekah. "I guess I'm taking her bed for the night. Flopping down at the end of Rebekah's bed, Hayley stared at her roommate. "Do you know how much it sucks being the designated driver?"

"A lot," Klaus said from the floor.

"Are you kidding me?" Hayley called to him.

Klaus crawled over to prop his head on the end of Rebekah's bed and stare up at Hayley. "I'm sorry I was a lousy parent for the five minutes I was pretending to be one. I should have been nicer to you."

Hayley patted him on the head. "You're a very complicated man, Klaus."

"Thank you," Klaus said before he fell over sideways and began to snore on the floor.

"Where will I be sleeping?" Kol asked, looking at the occupied beds.

"In your own bed. Enough with the sleepovers." Elijah told him, turning him around and dragging him out the door.

"I guess that's my cue," Marcel said before leaning down and kissing Rebekah on the cheek. "Sweet dreams, honey. Don't let the vamps bite," he gave Elena a warning look before leaving the room.

"That was exciting," Hayley said and then turned to look at Elena. "How did you end up on the wrong side of the supernatural divide?"

"I turned her," Caroline explained.

Hayley raised her eyebrows. "How?"

"She died with my blood in her system," Caroline informed Hayley.

"I guess she was spiking my drinks," Elena told the werewolf.

"Are you doing that to anyone else because I'm not sure that would be good for the baby," Hayley said, placing her hands on her flat belly.

"Don't worry. You're good. Although you might want to not drink anything that belongs to Rebekah. I haven't checked to make sure she no longer has any of the spiked drinks." Caroline replied with a wide yawn. "This past week or two have been exhausting."

"Tell me about it," Hayley said with a chuckle and an eye roll. "By the way, Elena, if you get peekish, please, try to not bite me. There are blood bags in the fridge and Klaus is on the floor, if you're bored."

Caroline rolled her eyes. "Lena, please, ignore Hayley. I know you haven't spent much time with her so you may not have learned to ignore her attempts to be funny. Then again, you do date Damon. So, maybe it isn't much of a stretch."

Elena shook her head. "Damon humor is an acquired taste."

"How do you acquire it? And is there a vaccine?" Hayley joked.

Laughing, Caroline shook her head. "Whatever. Okay, Elena you can have my bed. I'm going to camp out here on the floor with my snorey bear."

"Snorey wolf," Hayley corrected. "And you better not be doing anything weird down there. I'm still queasy," Hayley warned.

Sometime during the night Caroline was woken by the sounds of Rebekah tossing and turning in her bed. "Leave me alone. Don't bloody touch me, you wanker. Get OFF!" She screamed and then sat bolt upright, pointing at the place where their window had been. "He's here!" She shouted in fright.

Shooting across the room to the broken shards where their window had been, Caroline peered into the night. "Bekah, he's not here. You were having a bad dream." Caroline said as she came to sit with Rebekah, who was shaking.

"Caroline, he's not dead. I can feel it. And he's close. I don't know how, I know it must be my witch senses, I can feel him near." When Caroline looked around the room, she saw Elena, Hayley and Klaus staring at her. One thing was for sure they would have to either perform an exorcism or find the body if any of them wanted to get some sleep.

So I hope you liked the chapter. Anyway, I was gone for a while because my mother was in the hospital due to having a massive clot very close to her heart. In the mean time I decided to take some time off. At the moment I will probably be even slower than I was before but I hope that you will understand…

Thank you for reading, faving and following.

Rose: I did not post chapter 26. That was actually a mistake that I made on the day before my mother was admitted to the hospital. I guess my brain was fried before the excess trauma set in…

Prithvi14: Sorry about bringing Lena back but she didn't want to stay dead and that was part of the series of chapters that were already written. Klaus can still become a hybrid. That will be explained later on…

Lavanya: Apparently I did not kill Elena. As for Klaus just remember that there is no Original family in this story so the rules are different…

Guest: Thank you.

Lootmagoot: Thank you for the reviews...

Alexis2106: I hope that you're not sad anymore.

Guest: Thank you and I hope that you enjoyed the chapter.

Peace,
