Dick didn't know what time it was, he had long since stopped checking. He would sleep when this case was closed. He had also stopped answering messages asking if he was still up, those messaging probably knew he wasn't asleep so there was no point in confirming it. He was so close he knew it, except that's what he has been saying for weeks now, and really he wasn't. He startled from his focused trance when his phone actually rang instead of the chimes that he had gotten used to ignoring. Stupidly, he answered it.
"Do you plan to come home tonight or not?"
"Babs?"
"No, it's Alfred. Yes, it's me! Would you leave that damn cave and come home Dick?"
"I will soon-"
"No! Dick you've been working yourself to ground. If you're not out then you're glued to a computer! Everyone is worried about you, Tim is joking that you're gonna miss Christmas tomorrow because of this."
"Tomorrow's Christmas?"
"Really Dick?"
"I'm sorry, it's just this case. You know I've been focused on it and-"
"Too focused."
"I'll take a break for Christmas I promise."
He hadn't meant to lie, really he hadn't. He was just running late getting home, not that he should have been out in the first place but he had seen something on the news that had enticed him to suit up and go out while Babs was taking a nap. Would she be mad? Yes. Would he catch hell? Absolutely. Thirty minutes later when his comm crackled to life he knew who it was before she spoke.
"Where are you?"
"Uh, getting presents?"
"Dick-"
"Yeah yeah I know what I said but I'll be home soon-"
"Please."
Dick's footsteps faltered.
"Think of all the worrying I've done. And think of everyone else too. All I want is you home that's not a lot."
"Hold on Babs are you really trying to parody Santa Baby right now?"
"Dickie baby hurry down the chimney tonight."
Dick laughed and shook his head. He called his bike to start heading home.
"Only because you tried so hard. I'll be home in like an hour okay? I do wanna try to find some presents."
"Thanks babe."
This is ultimate trash sorry it's not as good as last years but my mind won't focus on this and I keep wanting to go back to TBATD. Still I wanted to do something.
