Tired
It's been three days since the accident. Three days since Leo was knocked unconscious by a nasty head wound during capture the flag. Three days since Piper moved from her spot by his bedside excluding necessary bathroom breaks and meals. A neat row of white bandages wrapped his forehead, flattening his curly wild hair. The rise and fall of his chest reassured the girl he was breathing. Just sleeping, she thought as she reached out and curled her fingers around his limp hand before squeezing tightly. Piper sucked in a deep breath, trying to ease the tightness in her chest.
She hates this, seeing Leo so still, quiet, and so un-Leo-like. He's a ball of energy, of motion. Constantly moving his hands, trying to put his chaotic thoughts into words for her. Even when Piper didn't get them, Leo would smile and laugh, throwing his arm over her shoulders and pulled her against his side. It'll be great, Beauty Queen. Just trust me. Piper's fingers rubbed at the nail polish, chipping the shiny red paint.
Stop that. Lacy spent hours on your nails. I know. I was there. Piper could hear him say with his crooked smile. Leo's hand would gently pull hers away, lacing their fingers together. She chipped the paint harder, just to spite him. "Fuck Leo," Piper whispered as she sucked in another deep breath, fighting off the tears. She just wanted to hear his voice, not imagine it in her head. "Stop this right now or I'll get mad." She threatened.
The door creaked sharply, pulling Piper's attention away. Will stood there awkwardly, fiddling with a clipboard. "Can I come in?" He asked, shuffling the papers in his hand. Piper nodded her head as she wiped nonexistent tears from her cheeks, trying to compose herself. Will shuffled in, sharp blue eyes roamed over Leo's still body. "How is he?"
"No change." Piper reported tiredly as she slumped in her chair, allowing her to slip out of Leo's. She ran her fingers through her tangled brown hair. The window of Leo's bed showed her grimy reflection. Her hair fell limply around her face, dire need of a wash. Slight dark bags lined her usually bright eyes. The camp shirt she wore was two sizes too big, engulfing her petite form. Piper couldn't muster any energy to look decent, not with Leo's condition being uncertain. Mother must be disappointed in me. She thought sarcastically. Usually Piper would smile but couldn't. The daughter of Aphrodite just felt drained. "Will, there's really nothing you can do for Leo?"
"Afraid so, Piper." Will answered, flashing a sad smile. "You know if I could, I would." He placed his fingers of Leo's wrist, feeling the pulse and silently counting the beats. Will's expression neutral as he adjusted the IV drop feeding Leo nutrition and noted something on his clipboard. "Head injuries are the hardest thing to assess especially with demigods. We have to wait and see."
Will met her gaze and offered a reassuring smile. "Why don't you get cleaned up? I'll stay with him. Jason and Reyna just landed." Piper blinked, surprised the two Romans actually found time to cross the country. She nodded her head, slowly pushing herself up. Out of habit, Piper wrapped her hand around Leo's and squeezed. His thumb twitched against the contact, freezing the girl.
"Piper?" Will asked, noticing the tension in her shoulders.
"Leo?" Piper said, ignoring Will as she sat on the edge of the bed. His eyelids fluttered. "Leo." She repeated, shaking his arm. This can't be a trick of light or something silly, Piper was sure. His eyes did flutter. "Leo, can you hear me? Come on, Repair Boy, wake up." Piper shook him gently, gritting her teeth in frustration. She felt Will's hands softly against her shoulders. "Leo…"
A soft groan escaped his lips. The demigods froze at the sound as a pair of amber eyes blinked, staring listlessly at the ceiling. Piper sucked in a deep breath as he turned his head and blinked at her. "Hi?" He said in a rough voice.
"Thank the gods." Piper sighed as she buried her head against Leo's chest.
"Hey pretty lady, do you often lay on guys or am I a special case?" Leo kidded as he smiled at her. Piper let out a watery laugh, looking up at him.
"Just for you, Leo." She answered. Something changed in his amber eyes, a tiny almost unnoticeable shift if Piper wasn't staring directly at him or didn't know him as well as she did, she would have missed. The playful spark from before dimmed. He took her hands and slowly sat up. Instead of lacing their fingers together, Leo actually pulled away, setting her hands in her lap. He looked at his hands, opening and closing them. "Leo, what's wrong?"
"I'm sorry." He started, looking up at her with confused eyes. "But who's Leo?"
