A young woman in her early-thirties stomped over to the banister of a staircase in an affluent home that was finely furnished and decorated, a soft summer morning's glow shown through the windows of the lower floor. She put her hands on her hips and sucked in a deep breath in order to shout up the stairs. "MAXWELL DONAHUE! WE ARE LEAVING SO GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW!" Her straight auburn hair framed a face covered in light freckles and deep emerald eyes framed by light lashes, her pouty lips twisted into a frown of disapproval. The man she called to was her brother, a shaggy haired, blonde, thickly muscled man that was more often than not high as a kite. Because of this he tended to move slower than his sibling when it came to getting out of bed and even though it was only eight in the morning it felt like 4 to him. The woman looked to her sibling, their green eyes meeting in a mirrored look of exasperation, "You told him last night, didn't you, Sam?" The mirrored image just chuckled, running a hand through his hair, "Yeah, but you know how he is. I'll go grab him."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she kneaded her forehead with her fingertips, "These tickets cost so much money, if we're late I'm killing him." She muttered to herself. There was some loud laughs and a few shouts before the two men came back down the stairs with a suitcase in hand. "Finally!" The two men grinned at her, "We'll get everything loaded up into the Jeep, don't worry so much." Max teased her, ruffling her hair as he passed her.
"I swear, trying to get you two to a Doors concert is like pulling teeth!" She whined, gabbing up some bags filled with snacks that they'd picked up the day before.
The trio was close and eager now that everyone was ready to go, chatting and bickering as they piled into the beat up old Jeep and blasted the music. "Hey Rose, pass me a Cola~" Sam turned to her with a grin. She dug around in the cooler they'd brough and passed him an ice cold one, "Here, don't say I never did anything for you on this trip." She teased him. "Watch out Texas the unstoppable Donahue-O'Murchadha Clan is on the way!" She laughed, her green eyes sparkling in excitement.
The trip would take them a few days, but that was fine. They'd have fun the whole way there, stopping occasionally to take in the sites of cities they passed through. She fell asleep as they passed into Texas from the Oklahoma border. She could never remember her dream. Her twin shook her awake, leaning over the console and half into the back of the Jeep where she was curled up, muttering in her sleep and dripping in sweat. Rose woke with a start, gasping for breath as she sat upright, a hand going to clutch at her throat. "Hey, hey, easy, you're alright, you're safe. It's all good, sis…" Worry made his brow crease. Rose sank back into her seat, folding her legs under herself. "It was the same one again." She murmured, rubbing her eyes once her heart stopped racing like mad.
No matter how many times she had the same dream she could never remember it. It evaporated like smoke the moment her eyes opened. It made her wonder what was so horrifying that her brain couldn't bear for her to remember it. Sighing she rolled over and pulled a cigarette and lighter out of her bag, her hands trembling as she lit it, "I'm sick of that dream." She grumbled around the cigarette. Her eyes trailed out to the window as she rolled it down to watch the sun rise as they sped along the country road. "Where are we?"
"Aye, Sammy, hand me a Cola." Max called without looking away from the road.
"Sure."
She watched them quietly, her smile returning to her face as she finished her cigarette, flicking the butt out the window, "Sam did you hear me? Where are we?"
He looked nervous as he answered hesitantly, "Travis County."
She looked at him confused, "What's with that look? You nervous about being in the boonies?" Rose tried to tease him playfully but still the nervous look stayed on his face. "Sam? What's wrong?" He just shook his head.
Max slowed down before pulling in at a gas station to fill up. "We're two hours from Dallas still but we'll never make it with a quarter tank. You guys go grab us some breakfast before we head out again, okay?"
Sam whispered to himself, "About two hours. Good." She nodded, concerned about his muttering before she took his arm. She started for the counter but stumbled as two women brushed past her. If Sam hadn't been there Rose would have fallen down. She narrowed her eyes at them into a dark glare, "What a couple of assholes…" Her hand balled up in a fist, "Someone should give them a lesson or two in manners."
Sam shook his head sharply, "Don't bother with them; we'll be gone and so will they." She sighed and relaxed her fist, "Whatever Sam." She started gathering up a few snacks and some more pop for their breakfast.
She looked up when she overheard the blonde say, "You've got some real nice things in here, ma'am." Rose whispered to Sam, "What a kiss ass, even the little lady didn't buy it.'
For the first time the twins noticed the bikers in the corner. They freaked the two girls out pretty badly with just a look, so they walked up to the woman and the blonde asked, "Excuse me ma'am is there a bathroom we can use?"
"Through the back," She didn't even look up from the paper she was reading. She heard a dull thump come from behind her that caused her to turn. She saw the biker chick talking to her man, "Pretty. Uh, pretty only goes skin deep, ugly's to the bone."
He responded faintly, "Leave 'em be." The words sent chills up her spine. 'What was he telling her not to do? Just what Sam had told me not to do?' She pushed her worries down as she started for the counter herself but the two women pushed past her again, making her drop all of the things she was going to purchase, "Hey! The hell is your problem?!" She shouted after them but they had hightailed it out of there. "Ugh… what a mess…" She crouched down and started gathering up the pieces of broken glass. They were lucky only one bottle broke. Sam went and asked for a mop, they weren't going to just leave after making such a mess, and they paid for everything, even the broken soda before they went back to the car.
"Max, those two idiots that came running out of there, knocked me down and broke a bottle of soda! It was so mean!" She whined. Unknown to them the woman from the station was watching, hoping they'd be the ones that just kept driving and didn't stay here any longer than they had to.
