Just a drabble I thought of during the on-and-off downpour in my area yesterday.

Mitakihara was, by nature, a bustling metropolis at all hours of the day. Its ultramodern buildings and shining streets were always crowded with activity, day or night…except in cases of extreme weather, as was the current situation. When rain fell hard and fast enough that the streets ran with small rivers of water, the city finally quieted as its people stayed indoors, warm and dry.

Unless they had a lunatic girlfriend who didn't know when to give up.

Kyoko didn't mind the rain, really. She had lived on the streets for over a year and was used to all kinds of harsh weather. But, while a light rain was acceptable and even pleasant under certain conditions, the sheets of water that were currently soaking her were a lot less desirable and were the kind of weather that would have caused her to break into a home rather than suffer. At least it was a warm summer rain, so she wasn't currently in danger of hypothermia.

They had been flitting from rooftop to rooftop when the rain started, tracking down a particularly stubborn Witch that had been feeding on the neighborhood for weeks. As soon as it became clear that the rain wasn't going to let up, Kyoko suggested that they go back, but Sayaka was adamant about finishing the job. The redhead agreed, only a little begrudgingly.

The problem wasn't that they were in the rain. The problem was that they were in the rain and had nothing to show for it. The Witch had slipped their grasp again, and now she had Homura's cold disapproval to look forward to. She had suggested a second time that they turn back, but Sayaka had flat out refused, arguing that she was sure she could find the Witch's signature again and lead them to it.

That had been about twenty minutes ago.

Now, perched on the roof of a building with her soaked mane of hair slapping against her back whenever she moved, she was considering the merits of pushing Sayaka off the edge and going back to their apartment alone. Whether it was the middle of the night, noon on the hottest day of the year, in the midst of a blizzard or during a torrential downpour, Sayaka absolutely would not shirk her duties as a Magical Girl.

And Kyoko always got dragged along with it.

"I hate you," she grumbled, just loud enough for her partner to hear.

"Uh huh." Sayaka didn't even look up from the Soul Gem that she was squinting at.

"There's nothing out here."

That one didn't even garner a half-hearted response.

The redhead leaned towards Sayaka, letting her spear support her weight, and glowered at her. "Have you ever had to fight in the rain? Not a fistfight, but a real, all-out Magical Girl battle. It's trickier than you might think. You keep up with this bullshit, and you'll be getting some practice in that."

Sayaka finally met her eyes and matched her glare with an equally fierce expression. "If this is such a hassle for you, then go back on your own."

Kyoko leaned forward a little more and let her dripping forehead rest against her lover's. "Never without you," she muttered with her eyes closed.

The other girl sighed and put her arm around Kyoko. "Oh, to Hell with this…you're right, that Witch is long gone." She sat down heavily, paying no mind to the puddles on the roof as she was already soaked to the bone. "I just hate leaving without catching it. What if it kills people between now and the next time we find it?"

Kyoko sat across from her patted Sayaka's shoulder. "Maybe it will. But there's nothing we can do about that now. That thing's gone to ground just like the other times and it isn't going to show itself while we're looking for it. Staying out here won't make a difference."

She nodded and stood up, offered her hand and pulled Kyoko to her feet as well. "I know…" She heaved a heavy sigh and sulked in the rain. "I'm sorry for wasting your time."

Kyoko gave her a quick kiss on the cheek by way of accepting her apology. "Don't worry about it. Now come on, let's get back home and get dried off."

Sayaka shook her head. "Not yet, there's something else I want to do out here, first."

She had had enough of this nonsense. "Oh, for fuck's sake! What else is there to do out here?"

The blunette didn't reply immediately. She stepped in closer to Kyoko, wrapped her arms around her waist, and then leaned in to whisper something in her ear. A light blush tinged her cheeks at what her girlfriend had to say.

"Oh."
