Good night, guys! :) I know I've lately been updating this on Sundays, but I was a little bit hangover and I just needed to be sitting on the couch and looking at the horizon with my mind in a blank state. :D So I didn't write all weekend and writing on weekdays is usually more complicated because of my lack of time. I'm sorry about that. I didn't proofread either, but I need some sleep and I guess you all want an update, even if it has a few mistakes. :D I know everybody loved the previous chapter, because the kiss finally happened. Let's see if you can survive this chapter! ;)
PD: IThank you for being so patient and nice even though my updates are not very frequent. You're the best! ;)
Herhers: Thanks! Then do you think Paige did that in order to avoid Emily dating Maya? Do you think I'm that cruel? xD
CaliGrlFoLife: Thank you! :D I'm glad you're addicted to this. xD
julietdiamondsx: Thanks! You're not the only one that has been eager to that kiss happening. ;)
plnaj: Thank you so much! I hope I don't screw this up then. :)
Guest 1: LOL
Guest 2: Go, Paigey! Right? :D
Tyna: I'm happy this made you happy. ;)
Guest 3: That breathless kiss was meant to happen. And it was unexpected for Emily, so that's even better. :)
Guest 4: :D
MJ: I'm glad I wrote something that made you happy. After so many doubts and cliffhangers I knew this chapter was going to make you all grin. Cheesecake and mac and cheese are way better than this story, but I liked the comparison. :D I hope you like this chapter, although it's not going to be as cheesy as the previous one. Muahaha. xD
Guest 5: Hahaha. Paige needed to be secure about her feelings before throwing herself into Emily. I guess 'the Paige of this story' is just not so impulsive. :)
PailyisGenuine: LOL Don't cry, just smile. It finally happened. xDDDD
Alexzmc: ¡Gracias! Sí, ya era hora de que hiciera algo. :D Un saludo. ;)
jofi: See? If you had killed me you wouldn't be able to read the chapter. :D Thanks! ;)
Enjoy the chapter, guys!
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE
: Chapter 19 – Dealing With The Consequences:
"Are you two dating?" Maya is obviously puzzled at what has happened. I'm even more baffled. I don't say a word, I'm unable to open my mouth. "Em?" Maya insists.
"I don't… I mean… I'm not dating her." That's the truth, I guess.
"Then why did she kiss you?" Maya frowns at me. It's like a mix of jealousy and protection.
"I don't know, Maya." I raise my voice, a little bit overwhelmed by her perseverance when I can't even fully understand why Paige did that.
"Is she gay or even bisexual? I mean…"
I feel sad when I remember about Jason. "I'm not so sure anymore," I add.
"Who is that girl anyway?" She's being way too inquisitive given the confusion I'm dealing with regarding this kiss. I can't concentrate when the only thing that comes to my mind are her sensual lips. I wish I could taste them again.
"She's a workmate and a friend," I add.
Maya shakes her head, still bothered at the kiss she gave me and made her shut up and stop attacking Paige. I think she feels a little bit humiliated because she didn't see it coming, just like me. "If she did that to piss me off…" She is overreacting. I mean, I'm not dating her anymore, so I can kiss anyone I want. "I just care about you a lot, Em," she adds, trying to make things better. She notices I was beginning to get mad at her. She's always been really possessive.
"Could we just leave, please?" I change the subject. She realized pushing me right now is not going to be a bright decision, so she nods at me.
We both stand up and I turn around to look at the table, but they're not there. Paige and Caleb already left. I go pay to the counter so I can ask the bartender if he saw Paige and Caleb leave. I need to find her, I need answers. He says that they left right after the kiss. He smiles at me, he obviously saw what happened. I didn't notice I was being observed 'cause the only thing I could concentrate on where her lips and beautiful hazel eyes. This means she came here because she knew I was going to meet Maya. She didn't care about the ice-cream, she just wanted to show up and kiss me. It was premeditated.
"I was thinking if you want to do something tomorrow," Maya says right after leaving the place.
"I don't know. I mean, can we talk tomorrow about that? I have…" She instantly interrupts me.
"You have other things in mind. I get it." She's trying to hide the fact that she didn't like my answer. I know her for a long time and I can see her rage just by looking her in the eye. However, I appreciate that she's making an effort. Maybe hanging out with her was not a good idea after all. We say goodbye to each other and I head to the apartment. I take my cellphone out of my purse and call her. I just wait, but she doesn't pick up.
"God damn it, Paige!" I say out loud, making a man that passes next to me look at me.
I get home and call her non-stop while I walk all over the place. I feel like a stalker. No answer. I get into the shower. Hot water calms me down for a moment, but when my mind remembers her lips on me, I feel hot all over my body. I finish the shower with cold water. I hate that a kiss can make me feel this. Once I get out of the shower I call her again. If she's ignoring me after everything, she is plain evil. She knows how I feel about her and not answering is the worst that she could do to me. I need to hear her voice, I need an explanation if I don't want to end up getting crazy. I turn the TV on with the intention of forgetting about everything, but it doesn't work out.
I decide to text her instead. If she's not going to answer my phone because she's a coward, then she could at least text me. "Call me as soon as you read this. Please. We need to talk."
After a rough night, I wake up eager to go to work. It's not that I feel like working, I just need to see her. She can't keep avoiding me. I look at my phone before leaving the apartment. I see I have an unread text. She wrote me at three in the morning.
"I'm sorry I didn't call you. I was at my brother's and my battery died. I didn't want to wake you up, so we'll talk tomorrow, okay? ;)"
It sounds like a lame excuse. Anyway, I'm going to see her right now, so I take a deep breath and leave the apartment.
She's almost always working by the time I get to the office. She casually isn't today. Luck is not on my side. I start working right after I turn the computer on. A knock on the door startles me.
"May I?" I hear a man's voice. I raise my head and see Mr. McCullers.
"Sure," I briefly say, wondering why he is here. He never comes here. If he wants to tell you something he just calls you to go to the office.
"Everything is fine." I guess he saw the fear in my eyes. He smiles at me. "I just came to tell you Paige is not coming today. She had to deal with some personal matters." So she calls avoiding me 'personal matters'. That's great. "I know you two work closely. He can't imagine how close we are, not only at work. "Do you need her to continue with your work?" he asks. Actually, I need her more than ever, 'cause I can't concentrate on anything if I don't see her and talk to her.
"It's okay. I can continue with the project without her help."
"That's perfect. Thank you, Emily." He grins at me and it reminds me of her daughter's perfect smile. "By the way, I'm really happy with your work. Keep it up," he adds before closing the door and disappearing. I don't even try calling her again. I just put the headphones on and dive right in the project.
The day doesn't go by very fast. When I leave the office I go home, put on my jogging attire and leave the apartment. I need to loosen up. After one hour of intense workup, I go back home and get into the shower. Before entering the shower, though, I check my phone. She didn't call or text. She's making me mad.
Although going jogging helped me to deal with this, now that I'm sitting at the couch I feel bad again. I decide to call her again, but she doesn't pick up. I jump out of the couch and head my bedroom. I put some jeans, a plain t-shirt and some sneakers. I grab my jacket and leave the apartment. If she doesn't have the guts to answer the phone or see me face to face, she leaves me with no other option. I'm going to show up at her apartment. Excuses are over.
I ring the doorbell and I hear footsteps approaching. I want to see her, but I suddenly feel nervous. I'm mad at her, but I know my anger will fade away once I see her beautiful face and those brown eyes staring at me. I am weak when I'm with her and I hate being vulnerable. I need to confront her though.
The door opens and she looks at me like I was a ghost. She didn't expect to see me after she ignored me for a whole day, so her reaction is understandable.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" She frowns at me.
"You didn't give me the opportunity to have a talk, so I had to come here." She just stares at me, but doesn't say a word and doesn't invite me in. She just holds the door and do nothing. Her indifference is making me furious. I can feel my blood boil and I know this will end up badly for her. "Is this way to make things right?" I raise my voice.
"It's not a good moment. I'm not alone." She raises her eyebrows. This makes me even more pissed off at the woman that's standing in front of me.
"That's great! Jason is here? I guess we can have a talk then. I mean, the three of us." I step into the apartment, pushing her lightly and entering the premises.
"Hi," a woman greets me. I suddenly feel totally embarrassed. "You didn't tell me you were expecting a guest, honey." She grins at Paige and then looks at me. "And you are…" she asks.
"Emily… Emily Fields, ma'am," I nervously add.
"Are you Dr. Hasting's friend? She talks a lot about you." She winks at me. I didn't want to meet her mom just like that. I feel like shit. I hope she didn't hear our conversation. "I've been spending a lot of time with her lately and she's always saying good things about her roommate. You have a good friend. And she's an excellent doctor," she says with a smile on her lips. "I'm her mom, in case you didn't already realize," she adds, filling the silence in the room. I don't speak and Paige doesn't say anything either.
"It's a pleasure." We shake hands and Paige approaches us.
"You didn't tell me you invited her for dinner, honey." Paige looks at me before answering to her mom.
"I'm sorry, mom. I forgot about that. I only had one thing in mind, you know." She gives me a disapproval look.
"I'm going to leave now, okay? Dr. Hastings told me I needed some rest. Can you call a cab, please?"
Paige shakes her head. "I already texted dad. He's going to pick you up. He must be…" The sound of the entry phone ringing interrupts Paige. "Talk of the devil, here he is." Her mom grabs her coat and purse and Paige approaches her and hugs her, then kisses her mom's temple affectionately. She couldn't be more adorable. I'm glad her dad is going to wait for her mom and not coming to the apartment. I don't want to deal with her dad too after the embarrassment I felt.
Paige closes the door, stares at me and then sits down on the couch.
"Aren't you going to say anything?"
She frowns at me. "Go ahead. I know you are dying to scold me."
"Are you serious?" I raise my voice again and she looks at me apathetically. "I just asked for a phone call or text."
"I'm really sorry, okay? The battery…"
"Are you really going to tell me that about the battery of the phone dying? Come on, Paige! Do you really think I'm that stupid?" She stands up and approaches me.
"That wasn't a lie, okay? Coincidences happen." I shake my head. "In case you didn't notice I spent all day in hospital with my mom. She was feeling dizzy and I was worried, so I went with her so the doctors could perform a checkup on her." I look her in the eye.
"I understand that, but…" I sigh. "Do you get that I've been feeling like shit since yesterday? I understand you were worried about your mom. I really get that. But you must have seen my calls and texts and answering only takes a second. Just one second!" I yell at her, making an attempt of dissipating all the rage I've been gathering. "You can't kiss me and disappear. I feel like you're toying with my feelings. I don't deserve this, okay? You can't use me like this when you know I…" I can't finish the sentence when she's just a few inches away from me.
"You what?" I see a grin on her face.
"Are you fucking kidding me? Are you laughing at me? Do you find this funny? You're an idiot!" I think I hurt my throat just by yelling at her. This is just cruel.
She places her right hand on my cheek and looks me in the eye. When her lips touch mine, all the anger goes away, disappears instantly.
"I couldn't think of a better way to shut you up." She grins at me and leaves me speechless.
To be continued…
Stay tuned! ;)
