Enigma

Chapter Five:

The Flute and the Feather

"D-Did I..." The young girl sobbed, wiping at her eyes as she huddled close to a towering tree that had not been there before—Camio's work. "Did I... D-Do something wrong?"

"Not at all, my dearest king." Camio whispered, thick and comforting vines wrapping themselves around her comfortingly, protectively. "You were not at fault."

"Then why?" Kali murmured, downcast eyes gazing at the floor, past her bruised legs and her scraped knees, to the ground beneath her where it thrummed to life. "What'd I do?"

"Some people in this world cannot... accept things." Camio answered finally, warm vines glowing and healing the scrapes. "They fear what they don't know, and they respond unkindly."

"I'm sorry..." Kali whispered, wiping at her eyes as the young girl brought her knees up to her chest. "It's my fault..."

"Of course not—"

"Now, I wouldn't say that."

The young girl froze, eyes widening at the ground before her as a pair of pointed tipped shoes landed in her vision. Stilling herself, Kali kept her gaze lowered to the ground, unmoving as she gazed at the unfamiliar feet before her.

"He's a friend, my king."

Kali's eyes snapped upwards and she stared wide eyed at the man before her, a warm smile on his face as he gazed down at her, platinum blonde locks falling in a long braid over his shoulder as he smiled. "Hello, my dear."

Instantly Kali was on her feet, eyes narrowed and body tensed as she bared her teeth. Camio responded to her will and the vines surrounding her turned thorny and sharp, the branches from the tree behind her rising from the ground and tearing up the earth, rising upwards threateningly. The young man blinked, tipping his hat back and letting out an approving hum. "I expected no less from Camio."

Kali froze at the name and the young man's smile remained warm. "I promise I won't hurt you. Not like them."

A few seconds ticked by and the roots fell back to the floor and the vines to the ground as well as Kali frowned, brows furrowing in confusion. "Who're you?"

"I'm Yunan." Yunan leaned downwards, eyes warm. "And you?"

"...Kali." The young girl paused before continuing. "What do you... What do you want? Camio says you're okay, but..."

"I'm honored." Yunan gazed up at the tree towering over them and he grew quiet, a thoughtful, almost sad look on his face. "Tell me Kali, do you know what has happened to you?"

"I think I don't have a home anymore." Kali answered, gazing down at the floor, and Yunan smiled.

"That can be easily fixed. But I mean here." The man pointed a finger to her chest, where her necklace lay, and Kali paused, watching him with wide eyes as he gazed down at her with a look of warmth mixed with pity, and at the same time, the faintest lingering of hope and curiosity. "You see..."

Camio's work burst forth from the earth, vines and trees and life coming upwards and breaking through the ground as it rose up around them. Kali's eyes grew wide and Yunan tipped his hat towards her, a warm smile on his face. The bird-like creatures burst forth in a collision of light, and she felt her breath slow.

"You've been given the power of kings."

"So this is what it's come to, eh?" Sinbad and Ja'far jumped, Masrur maintaining a flat expression despite his eyes glancing away as Kali smiled brightly, hands behind her back as she observed the scene before her. "Eavesdropping on a bunch of good kids."

"I told you this was an unsightly habit!" Ja'far whispered furiously, and Sinbad coughed into his hand, placing the cup down and shrugging the comment off as if it were nothing.

"I was simply trying to understand the situation at hand better." The king glanced back to the girl calmly, despite having been caught in the act. "Since you refused to discuss any information yourself."

"I'm under oath," Kali patted her heart, nodding nobly and Sinbad blinked, arching a brow.

"And you're not the slightest bit curious about this predicament yourself?"

"Ali's already told me everything." Kali played with the sash around her waist, a nonchalant look on her face. "So I don't need to resort to such underhanded tactics."

"I'm perfectly allowed to discover information the way I see fit. Especially when it involves ties with my country." Sinbad answered simply, and Kali shrugged, putting her hands behind her head as she let out a small hum.

"An interesting way to justify eavesdropping."

Ja'far sighed, rubbing the space between his brows as he set down the cup. Sinbad remained stubbornly at ease with the situation, despite the position he was in, and Masrur was silent, standing guard in the corner. Kali felt amusement flicker across her face before it fluttered away, and her eyes lowered as she gazed at the door, knowing Alibaba must be explaining the situation to those friends of his.

I should thank that girl... Morgiana? Kali shut her eyes, letting out a heavy sigh. "I'm quite fond of Sindria you know."

Sinbad glanced back to the girl, a curious look on his face as he waited for her to continue. Kali was silent for a moment more before she opened her eyes, silver meeting gold as the air turned thick. "But I've grown pretty fond of this kid. So whatever pieces you plan to obtain from this..."

Sinbad's gaze sharpened and Kali's eyes were cold, and it was in this moment that anyone could doubt that they were friends.

"As long as I'm around, no harm will come to him." Kali's eyes narrowed and her sword grew warm at her side, and her dagger blew a breeze through the hallway. "To any of them."

Sinbad was silent, gazing back at the girl for a moment before he let out a loud laugh, despite Ja'far's look of surprise as he glanced from the room to the king. "You make it sound like I'm planning to kill them in their sleep."

"Ah, you're not that terrible." Kali waved her hand at the notion, and with it, the tension was gone within a blink of an eye. "But I wouldn't trust everything you say."

"How cruel! I'm a man of my word."

"Hah, that's funny—"

"Shh!" Sinbad held up a finger, and Kali paused, blinking at the action as her mouth came to a close and she watched in curiosity as he leaned closer to the wall a frown on his face. Sinbad suddenly jerked back, blinking in surprise. "That's odd; I suddenly heard a crash..."

"Sin, look out!"

"My king!"

A gust of wind shot upwards like a wall as debris flew in all directions. Kali winced at the loud explosion, holding her arms up to shield her face as chunks of wall and plaster bounced off the wind around her. Silver eyes instantly locked onto the other three, assessing their status. Realizing they were fine Kali lowered the breeze, eyes narrowed at the gaping hole in the wall.

So much for a moment of peace. Screams of terror and cries of pain made their way to her ears, and she wound her fingers together, vines growing through the cracks and spreading along the floor beneath her. Camio, heal the wounded.

"As you wish."

This is just a hotel. Kali's eyes grew dull at the chaos forming around her, innocent lives were being harmed and people had no idea what it was they were doing. The consequences were shoved aside.

It was how fates were torn.

"But this world still has a chance."

Kali's eyes snapped back to attention and she pressed the metal feather to her lips, offering a quick thanks to Camio before she felt her resolve harden.

"How dare you take our leader and our comrade away!" Kali blinked at the familiar voice, craning her head and stiffening at the familiar and unfamiliar faces, Hassan leading a group of Fog Troupe members, weapons and teeth bared.

Alibaba...and me? Kali blinked in surprise, slightly touched for a moment, but the objective at hand suddenly became clear, and by the look on Sinbad's face, it seemed information about his should've been private.

This was why she liked to stay low key.

Men raised crossbows, and arrows were sent flying across the room. Kali's eyes darted to Sinbad, and seeing Ja'far and Masrur at his side, she knew he would be alright.

Her fingers curled upwards and vines burst through the floor, snapping in the air and entwining themselves around several members, pulling them away from worker and civilians. Gray eyes gleamed silver and she jerked them apart, setting them aside and keeping them immobile.

"Free!" Kali blinked at her alias, turning around and spotting Hassan. "There you are! Where's Alibaba? These bastards—"

A flash of purple surged past her and Kali blinked as her hair fluttered about her. Sinbad's temporary sword collided with Hassan's and Sinbad smirked, eyes narrowed as he pushed down on the larger male. "This is my competition?"

Kali rolled her eyes as a hiss filled the air, and Hassan's corrosive sword began to melt through the blade. Sinbad's eyes widened in surprise and the sword snapped off, leaving him weaponless.

"You're useless!" Ja'far exclaimed, shoving aside another man, and Kali hummed in amusement, separating another fight.

"I guess it's the metal vessels that make the man."

"Shut up!"

"Now die!" Hassan swung and Sinbad ducked, using the opening and ducking forward, palms pushed outwards as they collided with Hassan's stomach. Kali winced, recognizing the action, and Hassan stumbled backwards, a grin on his face. "What was that? Were you—"

The larger male stiffened, blood coughing up from his mouth as he crumpled to the floor. Sinbad scoffed, glancing over to a blank faced Kali with a faint smirk. "Thinking twice?"

"How awful..." Kali made a face of disgust and Sinbad recoiled in shock as the girl turned her back on him, shaking her head. "You are worst than I thought."

"H-Hey!"

"Hassan!" Zaynab raised her own sword, eyes filled with fury as she stood over Hassan's unconscious body. "Get them!"

A surge of people rushed forward and Kali's eyes snapped to where Masrur and Ja'far were prepared to take them all down to protect the innocent lives.

I'm in way over my head. With a low grunt Kali raised her hands upwards, a flurry of vines shooting forth from the ground, cracking the floor and walls as they wrapped themselves around others, jerking weapons out of reach and separating people from fights.

"Wouldn't it be easier to pick a side?" Camio murmured, sensing the discord running along the back of her mind. "You have to fight back and forth..."

This is fine. Kali inhaled, feeling the people around her despite the turmoil, pinpointing the injured and doing her best to keep everyone away from each other. You know I don't like fighting.

"As you wish, my king."

Footsteps thundered around her over the shouts and cries, and her eyes snapped to where members of the Fog Troupe were surging up the stairs and onto the roof. Kassim lead the group upwards and Kali felt her heart drop, having hoped that the younger boy would've stayed out of this fray.

Of course not. You know better. Kali sighed, twitching her fingers and setting people down. Cracks and explosions went off around her, and she watched as the wall caved in where Masrur burst forth, Sinbad and Ja'far behind as they reached the Fog Troupe.

Ah, this is more work than I expected. Kali watched as the scenery of the hotel changed and her feet landed on the rooftop from the teleport. A rough breeze came billowing past her as the moon shone down on them, a silent caster of light as the group surrounded Sinbad and the others. Eyes were narrowed in hate and swords were raised and ready to strike without a second's hesitation.

This was the kind of thing she did her best to avoid.

The world is an ugly place.

"Kali!" She glanced to the side and Aladdin gazed up at her in surprise. "Are you alright?"

"I am, thank you." Kali smiled warmly at the boy, her eyes softening slightly as he returned the smile. "Although, this pace is a bit too fast for me."

Aladdin gazed at her for a moment, and Kali's lips turned upwards slightly, the Rukh about her fluttering in response at their presence. "When things calm down, I'd like to talk to you too."

Aladdin blinked in surprise and Kali grinned faintly, patting the small boy's head as Aladdin suddenly frowned. "Kali, I can tell you're a good person, but..."

Aladdin's face scrunched up as if in concentration, and he furrowed his brows slightly. "I just can't tell..." A look of realization flickered across his face and Kali silently applauded him for catching on to her so quickly.

He's an interesting kid it seems. Kali held back a smile at the thought.

But now... Kali's eyes narrowed and she tilted her chin, observing the crack in the roof floor Masrur had created from the force of his own attack, and the three now bore down on the rest of the thieves gathered here. Kali knew that if a fight were to truly break out, the Fog Troupe would stand no chance.

"Then what will you do?"

"Masrur, you over did it." Sinbad crossed his arms over his chest, gazing down at Kassim and the others flatly, and an unimpressed look in his golden eyes. "Use less power next time."

"Who are you guys?" Kassim snapped, raising his magic weapon as his eyes narrowed in fury.

Sinbad blinked calmly, head held high as he gazed down at the younger boy. "What do you mean? Didn't you come here looking for me?"

"So you're Sinbad." Kassim's held his sword before him, and dark golden eyes grew a shade darker as a shadow crossed over his face. The familiar black fog began to wrap around the sword and he swung.

The thick fog shot outwards, wrapping around Sinbad. A curious look came over the king's face as he crouched from the force of the fog, eyeing it thoughtfully. "What is this?"

"The more you struggle the tighter it'll bind you." Kassim warned, and his eyes snapped to Masrur and Ja'far, as well as Morgiana. "Hear that? No one move!"

That's no good. Kali ran a hand through her hair, beginning to realize that choice she'd have to make soon. As much as she hated to admit it, Sinbad was strong—she was relatively certain he was stronger than her as well.

"But he's without his vessels." Raum's voice whispered cheekily, and Kali withheld a small smirk, the corner of her lips twitching.

Sinbad's hands glowed golden and the black fog disappeared in an instant. The familiar power of magoi manipulation sent a shiver down Kali's spine, considering how well she knew that move would put her at a disadvantage.

"He is a king."

"Kali." The girl blinked, glancing out of the corner of her eye to the familiar head of white, and Ja'far's face remained impassive. "I hope I am not mistaken when I assume where your loyalties will lie in this fight."

Kali paused, pondering over her answer for a moment before she flashed the former assassin a wolfish grin, eyes gleaming silver.

"I hope so too."

"Magical tools of that caliber won't affect me." Sinbad stated calmly, standing tall against the dark sky as he gazed down at Kassim once more.

"Damn you!" Kassim charged forward, but before he could even swing, Masrur snatched his wrists, forcing the teen onto his knees before Sinbad.

"Kassim!" Kali's eyes snapped to Alibaba and she paused, watching the blonde for a moment.

Sinbad drew a sword and held it before the blonde, expression unchanging. "Now, once I capture you, my work here'll be done. Right, Wonder Man Alibaba?" Sinbad's lips turned upwards in a crooked smirk. "Let's settle this as leaders. What do you say? Feel free to use your weapon, Dungeon Capturer."

Alibaba froze, brows furrowing as he grit his teeth, a hand hovering beside his knife. The inner conflict going on within the blonde was evident, and Kali drummed her fingers along Raum's hilt, waiting to see the outcome of this confrontation.

A thin trail of Rukh fluttered before her and the sooty haired girl paused, watching the trail of light flow past Sinbad and Aladdin. Kali gazed between the two, a curious look crossing her features before she turned away, holding back a grin as she settled on her decision.

"Men! Make sure our leader makes it out alive!" Kassim ordered, and the men behind Alibaba tensed, ready to fight to the death it seemed.

"I see. You have that option as well." Sinbad admitted, but the tip of the sword lowered to point at Kassim. "The Fog Troupe is doomed for anyway, and you're different from the likes of them."

Sinbad raised his head, eyes like gold meeting eyes like honey, and two dungeon capturers faced off. "If you want to run, run. They're all people from the slums. But you're not. Even if you pretend to be one of them, you can't escape the fact that you're a prince."

"Shut up!" Alibaba snapped, and Kali rocked back on her heels. So that's what he's after. "Don't talk like you know me! I'm no different from them; they're all my brothers and sisters!"

Alibaba reached for Amon and Kali let out a sigh, saddened to know the outcome of this. "Don't you make fun of the bonds we share!"

The knife came to life and Alibaba held it before him, shutting his eyes. "Spirit of dignity and etiquette, I command thee with my magoi as your source, use your great power to bring my will to life! Come forth, Amon!"

A flurry of flames illuminated the sky, casting long shadows along the rooftop as Alibaba raised the fire lined knife, eyes narrowed in determination as flames fanned out around him. Raum grew warm beneath her fingers, his presence exerting outwards at the display of flames, and Kali gripped the hilt tightly, watching silently as Amon's flames surged forward, buffeting against Sinbad.

Her eyes followed the swift movements as Alibaba surged forward, swiping Amon down against Sinbad, who parried each blow fluently. Kali watched carefully, Alibaba driving Sinbad back, but clearly not deterring him in the least.

Sinbad faced the prince calmly, parrying the blows as he recognized Balbadd's royal sword play, along with Alibaba's addition of flames.

However...

Alibaba slid his foot across the ground and swiped upwards, and Sinbad almost allowed a look of surprise to break his calm façade at the unexpected move, sending his sword flying upwards. That move... Only one person I know fights so unpredictably...

Sinbad's gaze snapped to Kali and silver eyes met gold. The young woman blinked before offering him a cheeky grin, and Sinbad narrowed his eyes, feeling a surge of fond irritation flow through him.

He'd forgotten Kali spent some time with this boy.

Alibaba swung downwards, prepared to land a blow, but Sinbad moved back and reached forward, his hand clasping around Alibaba's wrist. The blonde's eyes widened and the flames began to disappear as the king kept his hold. With a sharp jerk of his knee, Alibaba let out a cough and tumbled forward, Sinbad turning around and gazing at him flatly.

Let's say we give Sinbad a run for his money, eh?

"Alibaba!" Kassim shouted, eyes wide with fury as Sinbad sighed.

"You don't seem to understand how to use a Djinn."

"I'm sorry... Kassim..." Alibaba coughed, his fists clenching weakly against the floor. "I..."

"Damn it!" Kassim snapped, struggling against Masrur as he glared at Sinbad. "Why did you have to show up here? This has nothing to do with Sindria! If it weren't for you, we'd still be undefeated!"

"If you didn't have someone on the inside leaking information to you, you wouldn't be able to do anything." Sinbad retaliated, turning around with a stern look on his face. "Know your place, you foolish weakling!"

"If they still have me though, I wonder how the tables would turn." Kali mused, appearing in front of Kassim and before Sinbad, a small smirk playing on her lips.

Sinbad's eyes widened in surprise and Ja'far let out a cry of irritation from the side, clutching at his head in disbelief. "That girl—"

Aladdin looked thoughtful, a curious look on his face as Morgiana tensed and Masrur blinked, his impassive face slackening as he seemed to let out a sigh through his nose. Kassim's eyes widened before they glinted, realizing they still had a chance, and Sinbad frowned, eyes narrowing at the girl in front of him.

"Kali."

"Hmm?"

"Please step aside."

"You're forgetting that I was helping these guys out," Kali crossed her arms over her chest, nodding her head thoughtfully. "I'm not just going to abandon them, you know?"

Sinbad's face flickered in irritation, and he leaned back, regarding the girl before him coolly. "Is that a challenge?"

"You know I'd avoid a fight if I could." Kali shrugged carelessly, raising her hands up in a carefree gesture. "But without that jewelry of yours..." Kali's grin turned feral and Sinbad cursed, eyes narrowing as she gazed back at him. "Who would win?"

Such a fight between these two... Ja'far's face paled at the thought and he clutched at his head in frustration. Sinbad is without a doubt strong, but knowing that Kali has six now... She's always been strong as well—and the idiot doesn't have his metal vessels! Even for Sinbad, isn't this a fight he could actually lose?

"Mister Ja'far," The vizier glanced over to a tense Morgiana, who looked ready to fight at a moment's notice. "Can we trust her?"

"Yes... and no." Ja'far rubbed his temples, letting out a heavy sigh. "Kali you see has always been a... neutral party. She has a strong history with us, and she'd never do anything to cause anyone harm..." What is she thinking?

The king and the traveler stared each other down, one serious and the other grinning as the silence seemed to stretch on. Aladdin watched silently, Morgiana carefully, and Ja'far was looking back and forth frantically.

"My king?"

If Sinbad does something along what I'm expecting, we have nothing to worry about. Kali pressed her fingers to her necklace, not leaving her gaze from Sinbad's. If not, well...

We have a fight on our hands.

"It seems that there is only one path left for you." Sinbad spoke suddenly, and Kali blinked, waiting thoughtful as he held his arms out. "You don't wish to fight, but these people wish to continue too. Considering all these options, there is only one then that will lead to the best compromise."

"It looks to be in our favor..."

"You must gain what you lack!" Kali paused; a look of confusing flittering across her face as Sinbad took a step forward, putting a hand to his chest. "In other words, you must allow me to join the Fog Troupe!"

...

...

...

Well...

I expected something from him that would lead to a better option... Kali rubbed the back of her head, letting out a sigh as her lips tempted to pull upwards. Just not that.

"I see why you still find him interesting."

"Sin, you're going to join the Fog Troupe?" Ja'far questioned, his eyes widening with disbelief and Sinbad blinked.

"Yes."

"And fight with them?"

"Yes."

"Against the government of Balbadd?"

"Yes!" Sinbad repeated once more, a bright smile on his face, and Kali patted her sword, feeling her Djinns cool down upon the realization that there would be no battle.

"But that makes no sense—you're supposed to defeat them." Ja'far explained, a look of complete and utter disbelief on his face. "Did you agree to Ahbmad to do so in order to reopen trade?"

"But I want to support the Fog Troupe." Sinbad replied simply, jutting out his thumb to Kali he added. "And if Kali's with them then I'm sure it's a good choice."

"That's not what you said earlier!"

"You made it seem like a pretty bad choice..." Kali muttered, flicking her fingers against Raum when she felt the sword grow to hot.

"Didn't you say that's your story and you're sticking to it? What happened to your resolve?"

Sinbad gazed at his trusted vizier for a moment before letting out a tired sigh. "Oh, Ja'far..." His arm shot out and Sinbad pointed an accusing finger at the white haired male. "How could you be so cold hearted?"

"...what? W-What?"

"You heard too, didn't you? About the terrible things happening in this country! Yet in spite of all that, your heart does not move?" Sinbad accused, and Kali shook her head sadly.

Poor Ja'far. "They're starving." Kali added.

"Well, I mean, I do think terrible things are happening..."

"Exactly!"

"That's why I decided that I'd rather lend my strength to these people desperately fighting for the slums, than to that stupid king." Sinbad declared, glancing to the people around him with a bright smile. "I will fight with the Fog Troupe!"

Golden eyes met gray and Sinbad beamed, the Rukh about him illuminating him in an alluring light, and Kali paused, remembering the way they'd glowed when she first met him.

Too bright... Kali squinted, glancing the other way as she rubbed her eyes. I'm going to go blind...

She turned her gaze to Kassim, watching as a look of fury came over his face and he grit his teeth, eyes ablaze. Kali felt her heart drop and she steeled herself, already knowing the outcome of this situation.

She'd seen it happen before after all.

"Not this one, my king. Not yet."

"So do you think you could let me join, Alibaba?"

"Sorry, but I've seen too much to fall for something like that." Alibaba looked uncertain, trying to stand his grown.

Sinbad remained firm, a bright smile on his face, but Kali's gaze was drawn to his eyes, hard and burning chips of darkened gold, the color to express his feelings to Alibaba. "If I said I just wanted to help the people of this country, you still wouldn't believe me?"

Alibaba remained silent, and Sinbad bent down on one to reach his level. "Well, I have one more reason. To stop the abnormalities that are happening in this world."

Kali stiffened, feeling a dark feeling swell up in her chest at the mention of that organization, and Camio muttered soothing words while her hand clenched around her sword hilt. Sinbad gazed at her from the corner of his eye before glancing away, pleased.

If there was one thing he could be certain about her, which was exceedingly rare, it was that she stood on their side against them.

"I'm sure you've noticed it as well. In recent years, wars have been happening with much greater frequency, and poverty and discrimination have become worse than ever. The world is becoming covered in chaos." Sinbad explained, and his eyes narrowed in firm determination. "As the King of Sindria, I am very concerned about the current situation of things. I want to resolve the internal strife in Balbadd because it is one of these abnormalities. How is that reason?"

He's backing him up into a wall. Kali observed, watching Alibaba's face thoughtfully.

"As he attempted with you so many times?"

You can't back someone up when they can just disappear. Kali rebutted, lips twitching faintly at the countless times Sinbad had tried to find some way to pin her down.

"Don't let him fool you! What would a king want to do with us?" Kassim snapped, and Kali frowned, watching his Rukh fluttering dangerously. "Those up there like him would love it if little, dirty, peasant folk like us all starved to death!"

Kassim's eyes narrowed and a smirk twisted upon his lips. "As long as he could continue living his own comfy, cushy life! Am I wrong o' great Sinbad?"

Kali held her tongue, shifting her weight as Ja'far's wires slid past, nicking Kassim in the cheek as the former assassin glared down at him with ruthless eyes, his face like stone. "Shut up."

Ja'far strode forward and lifted Kassim by the collar, a dark, merciless look in steel gray eyes as he held the pointed knife up to his neck. "A petty thief like you knows nothing of the scars Sin bears, the sacrifices Sin's made..."

Kali tensed, coiled and ready, but before Ja'far could strike, Sinbad's hand clasped itself over Ja'far's, and the king shook his head. "Ja'far, stop."

"I-I'm sorry..."

Ja'far's eyes widened and Kali appeared beside the white haired male, a small smile on her lips as she stood close to him. "Finally lost your cool did you?"

"F-Free!" Kali glanced up in surprise, and Kassim clenched his teeth. "You can beat them—I've seen what you can do—you wanted to fight for the people didn't you?"

Kali hesitated, feeling herself conflict upon the statement, even though she knew what he was trying to do—it didn't mean any of it wasn't true. "Was that all a lie? Was joining us all for your entertainment?"

"K-Kassim—" Alibaba started and Kali's gaze met his, and she gently shook her head at the blonde.

"Do you not give a shit about anything? When you have all this power?" Kassim exclaimed, and Kali withheld a flinch at the last question, the others unable to tell the blow it dealt her to hear such words.

"Over and over again..."

"We can't win..."

"I... I..."

"Power. I need power."

"As you wish, my king."

Kali opened her mouth to diffuse the situation, but before she could utter a word, the sword Sinbad had been using slammed down beside Kassim's head. The Fog Troupe leader's eyes went wide as Sinbad gazed down at him dully, an impassive, unimpressed look on his face, border lining cold.

"You can insult me as you wish, and I will gladly carry those words and accusations on my shoulders." Sinbad's eyes narrowed, and Kassim froze, a look he'd never seen before crossing across the king's face, like a lion protecting its pride. "However, insult one of my own, and there will be consequences."

"Ah, he is a rather good man, isn't he?"

Jeez. Kali ignored the warmth that spread through her chest, pushing it aside but not forgetting it. When you traveled alone for so long, people never grew attached, but when small acts like these, the kinds that threatened to tie her down appeared, she found herself swaying, if only a little bit.

"I'm not technically Sindrian you know." Kali idly twirled a vine around her fingers, and Sinbad paused, not turning around to face her. "So I think it is a bit out of rights when you say 'my own'."

The king turned, crossing his arms over his chest and regarding Kali coolly. "I consider you a close companion, isn't that reason enough?"

"Isn't 'my own' a bit possessive?"

"I simply spoke the truth, and what I believed."

"So all this time you've believed that I am Sindrian?"

"It takes only a word from you and perhaps, considering your...unique situation, a signature, and it will be true."

"Shame I don't know how to write."

"Ja'far will do it for you. I will do it for you."

"I was just kidding."

"Discuss these matters of citizenship legality later!" Ja'far snapped, and the two glanced over to him, blinking curiously as he seethed. "There are more important things to deal with."

"I agree." Kali nodded her head and Sinbad gave the girl a side long glance, blinking slowly.

"I actually find this matter quite important—"

"I get it." Alibaba stood before Kassim protectively, clenching his teeth slightly as Sinbad beamed.

"So you'll let me join? Thanks." Sinbad smiled warmly, and Kali rolled her eyes.

"Not like he had a choice..." Kali stiffened in surprise when wires suddenly wrapped around her body, a length of it wrapping around her head and jerking her backwards. Gray met gray and Kali grinned sheepishly, laughing as Ja'far glared down at her. "Hey Freckles!"

"You're not getting involved this time." Ja'far muttered darkly, and Kali laughed nervously, as the wires coiled around her, restricting her movement.

"Now that that's settled, I want Alibaba to go with me to the palace." Kali remained silent, per Ja'far's request, and stared up at the darkening sky as Sinbad explained his idea to Alibaba, what it was they had to do to save this country, using what he'd heard from eavesdropping to convince the blonde.

But as the sky grew darker and the stars grew brighter, Kali was reminded of the idea that a fire was starting to burn, igniting the hopes of the people. And as clouds lined the darkened sky, she remembered as well, that a storm was coming.

"Have faith, my king."

So everyone was beginning to move.

"Kali!" The sooty haired girl paused, glancing behind her as a head of bright blue appeared in her line of vision, and Aladdin panted as he caught up with her. "I wanted to ask you something!"

"What can I do for you?" Kali's lips curled upwards in a warm smile, and she felt her eyes soften as Aladdin smiled up at her, bright and happy, despite the situation at hand. Must be nice...

"I feel like we haven't had a proper chance to talk," Aladdin admitted, one hand clutching the wooden staff he kept and the other on his flute, and Kali gazed at the item curiously for a moment before meeting Aladdin's blue-eyed gaze. "You see, I don't know of anyone else who can see the Rukh too, but you said you're not a magi..."

"I'm not." Kali affirmed, taking a seat along the broken wall as she gazed out at the ruined city, thriving in its own gruesome way in an attempt to survive. "I guess I wouldn't say I'm normal, but I'm not anything special like you."

"You must be!" Aladdin beamed up at her, and Kali glanced at him curiously. "For someone who can see Rukh, teleport without magic, and own six metal vessels—that has to be special somehow!"

Kali's eye twitched, and she rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. "And...Where did you hear all of this?"

"Uncle Sinbad!"

"...I see." Uncle? Kali let out a tired sigh at the idea of the troublesome man, and Aladdin gazed at her thoughtfully.

"You know, it seems like you two are close, but there's a very firm line." Aladdin explained, using his hands to measure some kind of gap as he frowned. "So you're not apart of Sindria?"

"I'm more of a traveler." Kali folded her legs together and laid her arms over her knees, a thoughtful look on her face. "I don't stay anywhere long really. I just go about exploring the world."

"Eh~ Then you've probably seen a ton of places!" Aladdin's eyes went wide and Kali smiled.

"I guess so."

There was something wonderfully refreshing about talking to this boy, Kali realized. His attitude and demeanor was one that you couldn't shy away from. He wasn't painfully bright like Sinbad or firm and flickering like Alibaba, he was warm—like the sun on a breezy day, and where he was made you feel as if you were at home.

"I really think you're an interesting person, Kali." The young woman blinked in surprise, glancing down to Aladdin owlishly as he smiled warmly. "Even though you seem kind of distant... For some reason, being around you just feels nice!"

The feeling's mutual. "I guess I'm glad." Kali couldn't put her finger on it, but there was just something...different about this boy. Not just because of the fact that he was a magi, and a fourth one at that—there was just something else...

"Perhaps, my king..."

"Really nice..." Aladdin trailed off, and the gray eyed girl blinked, glancing down at him as Aladdin swooned slightly, a bashful look on his cheeks.

Without warning, the blue haired boy suddenly lunged. Kali gazed wide eyed for a moment before teleporting a step back so that Aladdin landed flat on his face. The young boy let out a cry and held his head, looking up tearfully. "Why'd you move?"

"I respect personal space." Kali nodded her head sagely, despite the hypocrisy of the statement—she honestly didn't, but she didn't appreciate people getting too close like that. "So I didn't like where you were going."

"Miss Kali's chest isn't big," Aladdin admitted, his cheeks flushing. "But they look soft..."

"Feel free to try," Kali shrugged, a grin curling on her lips. "But I must warn you, I've fended off even Sinbad at his worst." And that man can really get drunk.

"Well, there was that one time..."

My innocence remains in tact. I will settle enough for that victory.

"I'm glad I listened to Ugo when he said to go talk to you." Aladdin admitted, swinging his feet, and Kali blinked, staring at Aladdin curiously.

"Ugo?"

"Mmhmm!" Aladdin held up his flute, and Kali blinked at the gold instrument, feeling Camio stir in the back of her mind. "Ugo's my friend."

"...in the flute?"

"Yup!"

"...I see." Kali blinked once, staring thoughtfully at the boy. "Aladdin, you're a magi."

"That's right."

Then he shouldn't be able to use metal vessels normally. Kali frowned, a look of confusion flickering across her face. "Could I...meet him?"

"Sure!" Aladdin grinned, blowing a puff of air into the flute. As the sound echoed through her ears, the familiar pentagram appeared upon the flute and Kali watched with wide eyes as massive limbs of blue appeared forth from the flute, a headless body appearing before her.

I forgot magis could do something like this... Kali gazed in amazement at the tall muscular figure before her, mouth slightly agape as she titled her head back. "Well... that's very impressive."

"It's been a long time, my friend." Kali paused at Camio's voice, but before she could question her own Djinn, the metal feather around her neck grew warm and a cloud of smoke enveloped them.

Kali's heart began to race and she looked up expectantly, her eyes brightening at the sight of her familiar companion. Despite the fact that he was constantly by her side, seeing him again in person was always a wonderful feeling.

"Camio!"

"My king," The blue skinned Djinn bowed, a hand to his heart as the wreath of leaves around his tousled hair shifted with the movement, and warm eyes gazed down at her. "Esteemed magi."

"So this is Kali's Djinn," Aladdin murmured, gazing up at Camio with a bright smile. "It's nice to meet you!"

"Likewise." Camio smiled good naturedly, turning his attention back to the headless Djinn. "You as well, my friend."

Ugo paused, waving his arms in motions that Kali couldn't understand. Camio watched him thoughtfully, a look she'd never seen before flickering across his face before he smiled, inclining his head. "She does, doesn't she? I'm sure you've realized it as well, considering how smart you are."

Ugo's body flushed red and Kali stood beside Aladdin, gazing up at the two Djinn curiously. "What're they talking about?"

"Who knows?"

"I will do my best in aiding you, my friend." Camio inclined his head, but warmth surrounded Kali when his arms came around her and Camio's body wrapped around her, and she brought her arms up to clutch onto his. "But my first priorities will always be to my king."

Ugo seemed to nod good naturedly, waving his hands and Camio smiled, glancing back down to Kali. "I will take my leave then, my king, magi."

Kali nodded, smiling brightly as Camio's form returned to her necklace, and she glanced back up at Ugo. And if the Djinn had a head, she would've sworn he was looking at her. "Could I help you with something?"

Ugo froze, hands half stretched out, but he curled his fingers back in and returned his arms to his sides. Aladdin frowned at the gesture, a thoughtful look on his face, and Kali felt a distinct feeling in the back of her mind, a strange emotion she couldn't pin point.

"I won't bite." Kali grinned faintly and Ugo stiffened, his body looking uncertain. Aladdin gave him a reassuring smile and slowly, his large hand stretched out over her, and Kali blinked as a dark shadow casted over her from the size.

And like that, the arm shrunk in size to a smaller appendage, and the girl blinked in confusion as his hands landed on her head, and softly, ever so carefully, as if she would break, his fingers ruffled her hair. A strange choice of greeting, but Kali remained silent, his touch startlingly gentle and... sad somehow.

It was almost nostalgic.

"I guess he couldn't resist after all."

Kali made a mental note to question Camio later, but a string of chatter reached her ears and her gaze moved to the throng of people moving down the streets, fearful yet hopeful looks on their faces.

That's right. "Aladdin," The blue haired boy glanced up as Ugo disappeared back into the flute, and Kali gazed up at the sky thoughtfully. "Where's Alibaba?"

"On their way to the palace with Uncle Sinbad, I believe." Aladdin answered, smiling as he pulled on the white turban around his head, and Kali let out an appreciative whistle as it transformed into a flying carpet. "Shall we get going?"

"I prefer my form of travel," Her legs began to disappear and Kali waved, Aladdin smiling back brightly at her. "See you there."

"Shall we begin?"

And with that, she was gone.

"Spirit of dreams and illusions, I call upon you to use my magoi and grant me power." Kali's anklets glowed silver and she shut her eyes, feeling coolness wash over her. "Asmodeé."

Kali felt a wave of cool fill her and she opened her eyes, examining her now transparent body approvingly as she checked to make sure she could remain hidden for some part of the conversation. She waved her hands before a few citizens, but they passed by her without a care, and she nodded, thanking her Djinn before she shut her eyes.

"—I'm asking you as king. Promise me that you'll do everything in your power to protect the lives of the people!"

Kali blinked, the throne room of the palace appearing before her. She glanced around, proud that no one had seen through her illusion, although Sinbad's brows furrowed, and a confused look flickered across his face for a moment. Hoping he wouldn't notice, her gaze traveled a little further, landing on Alibaba's determined face.

Then... She cast a glance to the side and frowned, feeling her shoulders drop at the over sized, stubby man of a king on the throne beside her. This is his brother, the king.

How Alibaba was related to him was unbeknownst to her.

"If you do that, I'll disband the Fog Troupe." Alibaba vowed, golden eyes flaring brightly, and Kali felt a swell of pride in her chest.

"Is that all you have to say?"

Her fingers twitched for her dagger and Kali's eyes narrowed as Ahbmad hit his staff to the floor. Instantly, the guards along the side rushed forward, and Alibaba's eyes widened as they lowered their spears to block him off. "Hold up! What about our promise...?"

"You're out of line!" Irritation crept up along her spine and Kali's eyes turned cold as she gazed down at this so-called king, her opinion quickly plummeting. "Someone of such lowly reign as you... How dare you speak to the rightful king without permission!"

Lowly? The mark she knew rested on her back seemed to grow warm, but she ignored it, watching the king beside her silently as her fingers danced along her dagger sheath. Alibaba's eyes widened in disbelief and Sinbad's face darkened at the sudden turn.

"I am Ahbmad Saluja, twenty-third king of Balbadd! I never once recognized a foundling from the slums as my younger brother!" Ahbmad spat, and Kali smirked, eyes growing feral.

A good thing too. Raum grew warm at her side and Seere seemed to hum in response. I don't want Alibaba to consider this pig close.

"Hold fast, my king." Camio warned, and Kali stilled as he'd suggested. "Not yet."

"Don't forget, without the protection of the king of Sindria, your head would've already rolled!" Ahbmad sneered, and Kali's grip tightened.

"Calm."

"Get out, I'm feeling ill." Ahbmad placed fingers to his temple and sighed. "All those maggots swarming outside the palace..."

Scum.

"Don't mess with me, damn it!" Alibaba pushed against the spears holding him back, golden eyes alight with fury. "Insulting your own subject like that—you're not fit to be king!"

"And?" Alibaba froze; eyes wide as Ahbmad tilted his head back challengingly, a haughty air filling the room. "What are you going to do about it?"

Now.

"M-My king—"

"What is he going to do about it?" Kali wondered aloud, using the side of the throne as a prop as she leaned back against it, Asmodeé's illusion dropping down and revealing her presence. "That's the question, isn't it?"

The man beside Ahbmad—his advisor probably, flinched, a look of shock appearing on his face; and Ahbmad's eyes widened in disbelief as he jerked around in his throne, his chubby body beginning to tremble. "What—"

"Free!" Alibaba's eyes widened in surprise and shock, but his voice was over ruled by another as Sinbad stiffened, eyes widening as he took a step forward.

"Kali!"

"You don't mind if I sit in, do you?" Kali grinned, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned against the throne. "I promise I'll be quiet."

Sinbad's eyes narrowed and he regarded the girl carefully, trying to figure out why she'd decided to take part in this. While Ahbmad lurched backwards, jutting his staff at her. "H-How did you get in? Guards!"

"Does it matter?" Kali watched as vines grew through the cracks in the tile, halting the guards from coming to the king's aid. "But you said earlier didn't you—what can Alibaba do?"

Ahbmad glanced about frantically, eyes widening at the sudden turn of events as his guards failed to reach him. Kali turned her head and offered him a bright smile, a feral smile, and gray eyes glinted steel. "I'm afraid that..."

Eyes narrowed and Kali reveled in the look of disbelief and pure, utter fear that overcame Ahbmad's face as she held Raum to his throat, the sword's blade gleaming dangerously in the light. "You should be more worried about what I can do."

"H-H-How dare you!" Ahbmad cried, his face turning red from the event, but his eyes wide with fear, and Kali smirked. "You insolent—guards! Execute this woman at once!"

Kali snapped her fingers and vines wrapped around the palace guard's feet, binding them to their spot. The men began to struggle and Ahbmad's eyes grew wide as Kali leaned forward, offering him a cold smile. "What was that?"

"You..." Ahbmad's eyes narrowed in fury, and Kali had to applaud the bastard for not cowering just yet. "What do you want? Are you another thief—"

"What do I want?" Kali mused, twirling the blade in her hands and Ahbmad swallowed, eyeing the curved edge fearfully. "I wonder..."

"Kali." The young woman paused, her gaze not leaving her sword despite the commanding tone of the voice, the forcefulness. Sinbad's presence filled the room, demanded to be acknowledged, and she turned her gaze towards him, meeting burning gold with cool silver. "Release him."

Scary. He'd only used that voice on her a few times, she liked to call it his king's voice, the tone he took on when he exerted the fact that he was a king, a capturer of seven dungeons, and he would not let that fact slide. She liked to say it had no affect on her, but it did, though little. When he spoke to her like that, it was hard to ignore him.

"Is that an order?" Kali eyed her blade, lifting it up, and Ahbmad's chin rose in response.

"A request." Sinbad's eyes narrowed and his presence was overwhelming. "If you kill him, there will be consequences to pay."

"Do something!" Ahbmad snapped, and Kali felt her eye twitch in annoyance. "Or is this some plot by Sindria? What country are you from? I'll see to it—"

"I don't have a country." Kali's answer was simple, cold. "I report to no country, so I am my own."

"Kali!"

"Nor am I Sindrian, therefore," Her eyes met Sinbad's in a challenging stare, and the king's gaze held steady, as if the force of his gaze would force her into submission. "I have no need to follow the orders of a king that isn't mine."

"Are you prepared to be the start of a coup d'état that this country isn't ready for?" Sinbad warned, and as the king's gaze never left hers, he realized with an ache that held no hesitation. "You're no murderer Kali."

He thinks so highly of me... Kali's lips twisted at the thought, conflicting emotions of whether or not to be touched or frightened. "It's nice to know you think so, Sinbad."

They were friends; Kali would allow that thought to be recognized in her mind. But she was not his, and he was not hers. She followed her own orders, her own rule that was what true freedom meant, and with no country to bind her, there were no laws she followed.

It was lonely, wonderful thing.

"Free... No, Kali." Gray eyes met a warmer shade of gold and Kali regarded Alibaba coolly, her blade pressed hard against Ahbmad's throat, and the pig king trembled. "I have a thought to be thankful for because of you, and I owe you more than you could know."

Kali was silent and Alibaba's eyes met hers, hard and determined as he gripped Amon at his side, the look of a true king flickering upon his face. "But if you kill him, cruel or not he's my brother, and I won't forgive you."

Kali kept her face impassive, and Alibaba's was firm. She felt Sinbad's stare boring into the side of her head, and she withheld a smile, despite her annoyance, and she gripped Raum's hilt.

A line of golden flames, bordering silver lit up the curve of the blade, and Ahbmad let out something like a squeal or a scream. Alibaba tensed, but Sinbad leaned back, looking relieved though unsatisfied.

Though it was mostly due to the fact that even though he had known Kali for years, and after spending countless encounters trying to be able to understand and read this infatuating, infuriating woman—he still had no idea what went on in her mind. It was an infuriating thought, but not as much as the idea that this boy beside him, could talk her out of something and she wouldn't even spare him a glance.

They needed to have a serious talk when this was all over.

Kali's sword twirled in her fingers and she returned it to her sash, sliding her arms over her chest and yawning, disappearing and reappearing beside the blonde. Alibaba stiffened in surprise, but a look of relief came across his face and Kali allowed her lips to tilt upwards then.

Btu she purposely avoided the penetrating stare Sinbad was directing her way, knowing fully well what was going on in his mind.

"Guards—"

"Forgive me, Ahbmad." Sinbad held an arm out in front of Kali. "I take full responsibility for her actions—she isn't feeling well since the attack last night. As king I'm sure you're very aware of what happened, and the ability one of the Fog Troupe holds to confuse the mind of others."

"O-Of course!" Ahbmad bristled; face flushing in anger as Kali remained silent, silently wanting to get this over with.

"We tried that once, but it didn't work out, remember?"

Doesn't stop the temptation.

"Hmm? What on earth is this commotion?" Kali froze, a dark presence sweeping across the room and causing her to stiffen.

"Ah. You've returned banker?"

Her eyes landed on the strange figure at the end of the room, his face hidden by the turban he wore. Kali's eyes narrowed and she felt a familiar dislike well up within her, unchanging and firm.

"Yes, I've returned Ahbmad. Balbadd is still as hot as usual." The new man fanned himself, thorny vines wrapped around the top of his head to keep the cloth down. "...Oh? Visitors?"

She swore he glanced her way for a second, but her djinns flared in response, magoi flowing through her veins. His gaze traveled to Sinbad and Ahbmad, attempting to regain his status sighed. "He's the king of Sindria, who has come to visit. You should go and greet him."

The man nodded, pulling back his hood and revealing a face that thoroughly sent Kali's blood running cold, her eyes narrowing at the man and the darkened Rukh that fluttered around him.

There was no mistake.

"Pleased to meet you, King of Sindria!" The Banker bowed. "I'm 'Banker', and I'm currently employed as Balbadd's financial advisor, pleased to meet you!"

"Nice to meet you too." Sinbad offered the man a good natured smile, golden eyes dark and unreadable. "I hope that we may get along in the future."

"No, no, it's my pleasure." The banker bowed. "I feel honored to have an audience with such a legendary dungeon capturer!"

"Ah, it's nothing really..."

"And you, my lady," Banker offered Kali a bright smile, and the guards around her tensed not sure if they should arrest her for the earlier act. "If I may ask your name...?"

Kali remained silent, the Banker's smile unchanging as she expressed her obvious dislike, not fearing any consequences as she tilted her chin upwards. "Kali."

Sinbad's fingers ghosted over her hand and she forced a smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"It is all mine." The banker smiled, reaching to shake her hand, but before his fingers could come close, a fury of vines entwined around her fingers, covering the appendage, followed by a thin line of flames, flickering dangerously.

"Ah." Kali blinked, shrugging apologetically as she absently waved her hand around, trying to get the two to stop. "My bad."

"...Haven't we..." Sinbad spoke up suddenly, a thoughtful and curious look on his face. "Met before?"

"No, it's my first time meeting you, my lord!" Banker grinned, and Kali rolled her eyes until she froze, her entire body freezing as a familiar flutter of Rukh ghosted over her.

The mix of pure and darkened Rukh swarmed her, and her eyes widened in disbelief and fear as her body began to tremble, her entire being praying to whatever gods out there that she was being paranoid and imagining things. This can't be real. They're all the way on the other side—

"Ah~ Out of the way! There's so many people blocking..."

The voice sent a violent shiver up her spine and Kali flinched, face paling as she turned her head jerkily, and body shaking at the familiar tone. She knew that voice, there was no way she could forget it—any of them.

Sure enough, confirming her worst fears and her most gruesome nightmares, bare feet came into view, followed by a muscled chest and chunnari, adorned by golden bracelets and necklace. Long black hair don in long braid swung out behind him, and crimson red eyes were dulled in annoyance and boredom.

I'm imagining this. Kali's knees shook and her whole body trembled, causing Sinbad to blink as her curiously.

"Ahh!" Judal's gaze landed on Sinbad and his eyes widened, and Sinbad stiffened, a look of alarm on his face at the appearance of the magi.

"Judal?"

"Hey! If it isn't the stupid king!" Judal crowed, a look of excitement flittering across his face before he paused, blinking curiously, watching the Rukh flutter about before his brows furrowed. "Wait a sec..."

Kali flinched and before she could even think to teleport, Judal's gaze landed on her and the magi froze, a look of disbelief coming across his face.

I'm dreaming.

Judal's eyes widened like saucers and his mouth fell open.

This is some awful nightmare.

Sinbad glanced between the two, brows furrowing as he tried to figure out what their relationship was.

"My king, I'm afraid to inform you..."

"Now way!" Judal's face lit up in pure excitement and happiness as he trotted over to Kali, the girl flinching as she took a step back. "You gotta be kidding me—Kali! It's Kitten!"

Kitten? Sinbad frowned and Kali's face had gone a deathly pale as Judal came close, positively beaming at the sight of the girl. Alibaba was also confused, the blonde glancing between his semi-mentor and friend and this new person. "I've been looking for you for years! Where'd you run off to, eh? It's been ages!"

"I-It's g-g-g-good to see you t-too." Kali managed, shaking uncontrollably as Judal grinned, as happy as a child with a new toy as he pulled up closer to the girl. "How've you... been?"

"Shit since you left!" Judal exclaimed, leaning forward and his arms ensnared the girl before him, pulling her to his chest as she turned her head, face still pale and uncertain as he grinned happily. "Where'd you go? Everyone—"

"You two know each other?" Sinbad inquired, not appreciating being left out as Judal's arms wrapped around Kali's waist and back, pulling her flush against him—and it'd be a lie if he wasn't faintly annoyed at the proximity.

"You suddenly left!" Judal smirked, leaning forward and Kali blanched, looking sick. "Everyone missed you ya know! Poor Kouen sent out searches for you for the longest time!"

If Kali's face was pale already, it became ashen white at the mention of the first prince, and the girl trembled, sliding her arm up between them as she attempted to pry herself from the magi. "I-It's great to see that you're well, Judal—but now's not the time..."

"Of course it is! These losers can wait!" Judal declared, jerking her closer as his eyes glittered in excitement. "You think I'm going to let you slip off now that I've found you?"

"Well—"

"Fat chance!" The magi was clearly elated with the new found discover of the other girl, eyes shining and face grinning devilishly. Kali on the other hand, was cursing every word she knew up to the high heavens.

"We couldn't run from them forever..."

We could try. Judal was beaming, smothering the girl to him as he latched onto her, refusing to relinquish his hold. "Why'd ya run off, eh? Don't tell me Kouen was coming on too strong—"

"I had places to go to." Kali answered, and Judal scoffed, rolling his eyes.

"You should've just stayed with us!"

"I didn't want to impose."

"Bullshit."

"I—"

"Pardon the intrusion," A firm hand clasped down onto Kali's shoulder, and the woman blinked as she was ripped from one chest and her back was pressed to another, firm and radiating power. "But I don't think now is the best time for a reunion."

Judal blinked grabbing at the space before him for a moment as he registered the fact that Kali was no longer beside him. His face became childishly confused and he turned, a frown touching his lips as he gazed at Sinbad and Kali. "Hey, Kitten, don't tell me that you've decided to hook up with this guy instead."

Kali spluttered, while Sinbad tilted his chin upwards, arching a brow at the indirect insult. Judal's face contorted into one of disbelief, and he jutted an accusing finger at Sinbad. "He's strong, I'll admit—but him over En—"

"It's not like that." Kali rubbed her temples, trying to cal herself. It was only Judal, the idea of Kouen here with him was unlikely, especially with his job out conquering the world—he was most likely at his post on the front lines.

"Then what're you doing hanging around here?" Judal questioned, looking confused at the sight before him. "You should be back at Kou then!"

"I have things to take care of." Kali managed, and Judal frowned, looking displeased.

"The stupid king and now you?" Judal rubbed his head in annoyance, shaking his head. "Ah—I'll never understand people like you."

"Judal—you know this wench?" Ahbmad questioned, and Judal frowned, a look of irritation crossing his face as he cast a side long glance at the king.

Kali stiffened, and with a reluctant sigh, she reached upwards into her hair where her thin braid rested, a dragon shaped hair piece entwined with the braid. Her fingers touched the metal vessel and Judal paused, eyes flicking over to her, his attention diverted with the action.

"Allow me to introduce you, Sinbad." Ahbmad gestured down to Judal, unaware that the two were already familiar. "This is Judal, the Oracle of the Kou Empire."

Sinbad's face morphed into one of shock and Kali glanced to the side, already aware of this.

"That's right; I'm currently employed as the 'Oracle' of the Kou Empire." Judal smirked, gesturing to himself. "Even today, the reason why I'm here is also because of official business, you know?"

So that's why... Kali frowned, glancing to the side as she mulled over what to do. Her current plan of action was messed with now that Judal had shown up, but if she was lucky, he wouldn't be too much trouble.

"He's quite fond of you still it seems."

I don't know if that's a curse or a blessing. Kali inwardly wailed, shoulders slumping at the thought.

"And with the news he brings, it seems he still—"

Stop right there, my friend.

"I'm sorry Sinbad, but please return for today. I'll forget about spreading the news. I still have many government affairs to attend to." Ahbmad slumped in his throne, a weary look on his face, and Kali felt a surge of irritation, barely quelled with Camio's calming words.

"Wait a second, our conversation isn't over yet." Sinbad's eyes narrowed and Ahmad sniffed, looking faintly annoyed.

"For someone who had a sword to his throat, he recovers quickly." Camio mused bitterly, and Kali hummed, drumming her fingers along Raum.

I wonder how long it'll take if we actually cut him.

"What are you referring to? Oh, the talk about reopening trade with Sindria? Sorry, but I can't fulfill that agreement." Kali's eyes narrowed and Alibaba stiffened, Sinbad's brows furrowing.

"What do you mean by that?"

"I've handed all of Balbadd's trade authorizations to the Kou Empire!"

Kali froze, a look of earnest disbelief filling her features as her gaze shot up to Ahbmad, and she felt her energy beginning to escalate quickly as Ahmad smiled as if this were all perfectly fine. "Without the approval of the Kou Empire, Balbadd can't trade with any other countries."

"The fool." Camio whispered, and Kali was too focused on trying to keep herself from slitting his throat then and there.

"Ahbmad, do you intend to let the Kou Empire control Balbadd?" Sinbad's eyes narrowed and Ahbmad smirked.

"My country isn't being controlled. This is just a policy suggested by Banker to revive Balbadd's economy."

"That's right!" Kali's gazed snapped to the banker and she narrowed her eyes, lips threatening to pull back into a feral snarl. "Connecting the economies of countries together peacefully—this is the job of bankers!"

Banker grinned, leaning forward, and Kali recoiled from the output of darkness that radiated off the man, her hand gripping Raum tightly. "Oh! Since you're a king too, do you want to hand over your country's economic affairs for us to manage?"

Sinbad's eyes narrowed, his suspicions about this man confirmed. But the king glanced to his side in surprised when Kali pressed beside him, a rare act since the young woman normally kept a few feet from anyone. Sinbad recognized the gesture, and his fingers ghosted over her hand once more as a look of pure coldness overcame her features, the kind of look that reassured Sinbad that Kali would be there for Sindria.

Like I'd ever let them get their paws on that country. Flames licked at her fingertips, Raum burning now. Not ever—never.

"And we will do everything in our power to keep it safe, my king."

But can we save this country... Kali ground her teeth, a surge of frustration welling within her. When this is the person who leads them.

"Wait! I haven't finished what I want to say!" Alibaba surged forward, and the guards lowered their spears, barring his way. Kali flicked her fingers and the spears were yanked down, vines holding them in place. "Promise me—right now! As king, promise me now... To protect those who are suffering!"

Ahbmad blinked before letting out a tired yawn. "Sinbad, please remove that 'thing' from here. I cannot understand the words of trash from the slums."

Alibaba charged, a look of fury on his face, and only a hand from Sinbad managed to bar his way. "Don't Alibaba! We should withdraw first—"

"Ahbmad! Listen to me!" Alibaba struggled to get the so-called king to recognize his plea, the people's plea. "We have no differences as humans!"

Ahbmad paid his brother no heed, and tears of frustration sprung from the prince's eyes. "Listen to me! You bastard—"

Sinbad's eyes widened and a ferocious gust of wind filled the palace, buffeting everyone within with a hard gust. The king's eyes darted to the side, and as a calm breeze settled over him and Alibaba, the rest of the room was a mini storm in the making, cyclones spreading along the floor and threatening to grow in size.

Kali's eyes had turned from gray to a pale ash color, the dagger in her hands unfurled so that wings seemed to wind up her arms. A cold look remained on the girl's face, and Kali regarded the court before her coldly. Alibaba stiffened, looking at Kali with wide eyes, and Judal was leaning forward, a look of excitement on his face.

"Is that your answer?" The wind lowered, the sharp gusts and slashes no longer threatening to tear the room apart, and Kali's voice was cold. "To what Alibaba has to say?"

Ahbmad said nothing, despite the fact that he was trembling; he remained firm, a look of stubbornness on his face as he readied the command to have her executed.

"They can try."

"I see." Kali slung an arm around Alibaba's shoulders, turning the furious boy around as she pressed close to him. Sinbad was at her side, a hard look lining his face, and Kali's fingers twitched.

Raum ignited in a burst of flames, and a wave of heat rolled off the vessel and through the room, scorching it in a furious burst. Sinbad's hand reached for her arm, and she made no protest this time, giving into the fact that it was a bit of a comfort—a distraction to the raging urge in her chest.

Ahbmad spluttered behind her, and Kali cast them one final glance, gray eyes like steel.

"Then you have mine."

"You must keep hold, my king." Kali shut her eyes, embracing the coldness of the coming evening as vines wrapped loosely around her—Camio's way of showing he was worried. "You cannot carelessly do that you know; even for you it will take a toll."

"I'm not going to get the chance again." Kali rolled over onto her side, gazing down at the slums below her. "Why not?"

"We should've scorched them."

"They would be no match for you, my love."

"If you wished it, my king."

"Bastards, all of them."

"I'm surprised you didn't."

Kali's lips broke out into a smile, and she thanked her djinns, curling slightly as she reveled in their presence, her vessels thrumming to life around her.

They were all she needed.

"Poor Kouen sent out searches for you for the longest time!"

Kali froze, her pleasant mood instantly souring as the girl cringed, glancing off the side as she tried to dispel the thoughts of the certain country and the certain prince.

"Perhaps we were foolish to assume it was the last we'd see of them."

"No, no, it was reasonable." Kali grimaced, rolling over once more. "We disappeared without a trace—there was no way they could track us down, it had to be a coincidence."

"That seems to be your answer for everything it seems. You have a habit of avoiding the idea of fate."

Kali paused, glancing up and blinking at Sinbad's figure, his frame blocking the evening light and causing her to focus all her attention onto him. Kali blinked up at him once more and Sinbad beamed down at her.

...

...

...

Kali shot up, but before she could teleport off the roof, a firm foot came down on her clothes, locking her in place. Kali stiffened, caught, and she turned around slowly to meet Sinbad's gaze, a smile on his face despite the forceful intensity of his gaze.

"Care to explain your relations with Judal? Or should I say the Oracle of the Kou Empire?"

Kali laughed nervously, glancing to the side.

She'd really gotten in over her head with this one.

Extra: The Fog Troupe's Day Off

Kali found herself wandering the base alone that night. She'd often do the same whenever she stayed at Sinbad's, but normally she'd run into the man or one of the generals, and they would keep her company until she fell asleep.

She supposed she was a bit of an insomniac.

After what I've seen, anyone would be too. Kali let out a tired sigh, rolling her shoulders as her anklets clinked together, ever so quietly. Maybe I could bug Alibaba...?

No, she didn't want to trouble the blonde. The ex-prince had grown on her, and despite how hard she tried with Sinbad and the others, she couldn't help but give way a little for him. He was a good guy.

Now, his friend on the other hand...

There was a crash and Kali paused, her hand instantly reaching for her sword, but she rounded the corner and paused, blinking curiously.

Kassim hunched over, seeming to stare down at the floor as he gazed at the spilled wine before him. A burnt cigar lay on the table beside him, and Kali watched curiously as he leaned down to pick up the cup.

But his hand morphed into a fist and it slammed down on the table. "Damn it!"

Kali watched the scene before her for a moment more. Alibaba had told her much about his situation, though it'd taken awhile, she weaseled it out of him, and now she regarded Kassim curiously, wondering about his take on the whole thing. The younger male's hands clenched and Kassim cursed, gripping the table.

Something other than wine dripped down to the floor, and the young woman stilled, eyes widening slightly.

"Kassim."

Kassim froze, his hand grabbing the nearest knife as he whirled around, eyes ablaze and a look of cold fury on his face, but before he could even utter a threat, his wild eyes met Kali's calm and curious ones and he paused, hesitating.

"...Free."

Kali said nothing and Kassim narrowed his eyes, setting down the knife but not taking his hand off of it. "What're you doing up this late?"

"Couldn't sleep." Kali strode into the room and she watched him thoughtfully. "You?"

Kassim glanced to the side. "Making plans for another raid."

"I see."

A heavy silence fell in between the two, and Kali inwardly wondered to herself. It'd been a long time since she'd ever encountered such strange meetings, and she wasn't sure how to approach the emotionally distraught.

It's rare that Sinbad ever gets like that. Kali racked her mind, trying to figure out what to do.

He didn't look like a confident leader in that moment. To her, he appeared like a child, distraught, alone, lost. Anger, confusion, resentment, familiar emotions she knew all to well had flashed upon his face, and she couldn't imagine the suffering he'd been through, and she couldn't compare it to her own.

Kassim frowned at her silence and turned away, reaching down and picking up the fallen cup. "You should get some sleep. But if you're going to stay up, don't bug anyone else."

"Think about what you would want someone to do, and then imagine the opposite." Camio suggested, and Kali registered the strange advice.

"I'm going—" Kassim froze, slender arms, warm arms wrapping around his figure. The teen stiffened, eyes widening and Kassim instantly recoiled, trying to shove her off. "The hell do you think—"

"It'll help me sleep." Kali lied, tightening her grip on the male, and Kassim struggled, trying to shove her away, almost frantically. "I won't do anything weird if that's what you're worried about."

Kassim stopped, and Kali remained silent, her grip tight as she refused to relinquish her hold. Kassim went still, and Kali knew that to keep up his façade, he would shove her aside and grumble, wondering what the hell she was thinking grabbing him like that.

But to her faint surprise, Kassim went limp and he slumped, and Kali moved so that he sat and she cradled him slightly. Her eyes softened and Kassim said nothing else, an inner conflict running through his mind.

He barely knew this woman, and even to someone close, he would never let himself slip like this, it was too risky. He couldn't understand it though, something in the way she held herself forced you to open your mouth, and you couldn't control what came out. He'd scorn anyone for even imagining pitying him, but there was no pity, only sadness.

Perhaps the selfish part of him just wanted to revel in the idea of someone being sad for him, but another part of him whispered something else.

He was just tired.

And as those warm arms brought him close, he didn't care at that moment that he'd dropped his mask in front of a complete stranger.

He just wanted a hug.

It was a strange feeling for Kali, holding someone like this. She'd spent so much time keeping a few feet away, it'd been awhile since she'd held anyone so closely to herself. It was like baring open your heart and trusting them not to stab you.

But some feeling she'd forgotten she'd had filled her, the same that appeared when Sinbad slipped, and the burden he carried as a king pulled down on him a little more than usual. And Kali wasn't sure how to feel, but she knew that in this moment, she just wanted to help this boy.

Yeah. As Kassim's arms came up to wrap around her, and he leaned against her, Kali ran her fingers through matted dreadlocks, praying to whatever god out there to keep these poor souls safe. He was alright too.

An extra longer chapter for you guys! :D And next chapter, we finally get to find out exactly what happened in Kou~

I apologize if the extra seemed a little OOC, but I love Kassim, and my heart breaks every time I go through this arc. The poor guy just needs a little love.

And since I've been asked, here is a description of Kali.

She's of average height, roughly about Alibaba's. Kali's hair is a sooty black color and reaches below her shoulders, there's a thin braid on the side of her head that has a dragon hair piece wrapped around it, a few feathers adorning the top and mingling in. Her skin is lightly tanned with gray eyes. There are light scars that adorn her body, and a large tattoo on her back, but you'll learn more about that later. ;) Kali wears a bundle of white sashes tied around her chest (which is averagely sized), and a loose blue tunic that v-necks down to below her chest. She wears loose black shorts beneath, and a dark blue sash tied around her hips. She normally goes barefoot, and wears leather bracelets on her wrists with metal flowers strung between them, bangle anklets on her legs, with thin broken off chains hanging from them, as well as a metal leaf connecting them in the middle. And then there's good ol' Camio in a vine-woven necklace around her neck, and a twisted up sash she has loosely tied around her neck, sort of like Alibaba's.

Djinns we know so far:

Raum- Located on her sword, a long, curved blade with a dragon imprinted on the blade, leather hilt, and a tassel with a spiked ring, similar to a curled dragon hanging off. Fire/Heat Djinn.

Camio- Located on the metal feather on her necklace. Life/? Djinn

Seere- Located on her dagger, a curved blade similar to a wing, with wing patterns engraved on the hilt, and a string of feathers attached as a tassel. Storm Djinn.

Asmodeé- Located on her anklets, the leaf charm in the middle. ? Djinn.

Ose- Located on the dragon hairpiece on her head. Water Djinn.

Only one more to introduce, and he'll show up eventually. :D I hope this helps!

Thank you all so much for the wonderful reviews and encouragements, I hope that you all enjoyed this chapter, and had a great time reading!
