Here is a tiny little drabble based on an anonymous prompt asking for Sherlock's thoughts during TEH. Sorry I've been absent recently, but school/real life is super busy at the moment!
"I had a lovely day…."
He was too late. Those five words, spoken bittersweetly, as though Molly was trying to hold back tears, were the final nail in the coffin.
He had seen the ring, of course, when she first arrived at his flat, although he had known of her potential engagement since Mycroft informed him of Tom's presence in her life. She deserved a man like Tom, someone who would try to make her happy with no thought to his own needs.
Someone very unlike himself.
For a moment, he had been tempted to tell her of his growing feelings, of his sentiment in relation to her, but he held himself back. If he had spent his entire life thinking only of himself, he would be selfless for Molly Hooper today. She deserved that much, at least.
She deserved so much more.
Still, he couldn't quite stop himself from leaning forward, gracing her with a half-hearted smile as he gazed down at the exceptional woman before him. She mattered so much more than she would ever know.
"I hope you'll be very happy, Molly Hooper."
His lips lingered against her cheek, reluctant to pull away from the softness of her skin. Finally, he took a deep breath, cataloguing her scent in his mind palace, before he pulled away.
He wrapped his coat tighter around himself, to combat some of the chill left after the loss of her warmth, and strode out the door, sniffling as the cold air hit him.
Goodbye, Molly Hooper.
