This was written really quickly, so I apologize for any mistakes. I just needed to get this out after seeing some potential spoilers/speculation for The Final Problem, so don't read on if you don't want to be potentially spoiled. I'm expecting Molly Hooper to break my heart.
"Goodbye, Sherlock." She turned and walked away, not sparing him another glance.
He had noted, in the detached way he used to keep himself free of sentiment, that she appeared more stressed than normal. More exhausted, and less cheerful than he had come to expect in the years they'd known each other. He had ignored it, because some small part of him had refused to believe that she would ever turn her back on him.
But everyone had their breaking point, and it seemed that Molly Hooper had finally reached hers.
He should have told her.
He should have told her that he meant the words he had uttered in a dark morgue when he asked her to kill him.
"You were wrong, you know. You do count. You've always counted, and I've always trusted you."
He should have told her that his lips tingled every time they came into contact with her skin.
"Forgive me."
"I hope you'll be very happy, Molly Hooper."
He should have told her that he no longer believed that sentiment was a chemical defect, that she had helped show him the advantages of caring about other people.
He should have told her that, in some other lifetime, in some other universe, they could be happy together.
He should have told her that he loved her.
But he never said any of those things, could never gather enough courage to tell her.
Now, he could do nothing but stare after her as she walked out of his life, leaving him to stew in his regrets and thoughts of a life without Molly Hooper.
I sincerely hope this isn't what happens in the final episode, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. Please leave a review and let me know what you think!
