Chapter Forty Six

Nathan and Haley enjoyed the rest of the Christmas holidays, overjoyed at the thought they were going to have their son. When Nathan called his dad to tell him the wonderful news, he didn't believe him. He didn't think the doctor would make that type of mistake. Neither could Nathan, but he wasn't going to complain. This was what he had been waiting for. He just couldn't believe it was finally going to come true.

Soon, it was time for Haley's baby shower. Like Brooke, Peyton arranged it to be at the club. The room was full of blue decorations. Instead of a traditional cake, there was a Hostess cake. The invitation was extended to both former and current students of Haley's. It was quite a full house, but Haley didn't mind. She appreciated the love and support for her, Nathan and the upcoming birth of little James Lucas Scott.

"I never thought a doctor would be wrong with telling you the gender of the baby," Peyton told Haley. "Who would make a mistake like that? I would understand if it was the other way around, but it should be obvious with the ultrasound that the baby was going to be a boy. Was this person a new doctor or something?"

Haley tried not to smile. "You were the one who recommended me to him."

Peyton turned red. "I did, didn't I? You're not going to hold that against me, are you? Because you can't hold the doctor's mistakes on me. Although, he did tease me when I was pregnant with Ryan, telling me that Jake was right and the baby was going to be a girl."

"You should have seen our mom," Quinn said, joining in the conversation. "She kept insisting the doctor was wrong and Haley had to go and see Dr. Rivers, who was the expert. Maybe you should redo the nursery with neutral colors just to be safe."

"A little too late for that," Haley replied. "As soon as we came home, he went to work on the nursery to get it all ready for Jamie." She smiled to herself. "Wow, I think it's finally starting to hit me that I'm going to be a mom." Her face changed from happy to nervous. "It's okay to be scared, right?"

Peyton nodded. "Oh yeah. I would be surprised if you weren't scared. But it's also exciting at the same time. Just remember to enjoy that first year with Jamie. Because I can guarantee that first year goes by fast. By the time your baby turns one, you'll be wanting that second child. Although, I really didn't expect to get pregnant from the night of Ryan's first birthday. But I can't complain." She frowned. "Isn't that your sister?"

Haley and Quinn looked behind them. To their surprise, the unexpected guest was certainly Taylor. Of course their mother gave her a wide smile and welcomed her with open arms. "I'm so glad you've made it. I'll bring your present over to the table. You go and chat with the guest of honor." Before Taylor could even move, Haley and Quinn were already approaching them. Lydia quickly stood in between the sisters. "Before you start yelling at your sister, I want you to know that I invited her. I thought it was about time this sisterly feud between you girls ended."

Haley and Quinn weren't surprised their mother invited her. Neither of them were going to yell at her. However, they wanted to make their feelings clear. "Mom, we're big girls now. We don't need you to mediate between us anymore," Quinn told her.

Lydia gave her daughter a look. "Clearly, I do. Taylor skipped out on your sister's wedding because she thought she wouldn't have been welcomed. I'm not having her skip out on yours. Talk it out. Because I don't want Taylor to miss out on anything else including watching Jamie grow up. And Haley won't be allowed to open presents until you do." Haley wanted to protest, but her mother was firm. "I don't care if you are the guest of honor. Talk to your sister."

"I still have food in the car," Taylor said before her mother disappeared towards the exit. Peyton was right behind her. "I brought brownies as a peace offering." There was silence from her sisters. "Ok, I admit that I was wrong to bring Julian with me to that Thanksgiving dinner. But may I remind you that was two years ago? Two. That's a long time to hold a grudge. From what I have heard, you have forgiven Julian. So why are you still mad at me? Were you still in love with him or something?"

Haley couldn't believe she even considered the thought. "No, it was the fact you brought him on purpose to stir up drama between Julian and Nathan," she protested. "I was having a rough year already and you had to bring more problems in my life. I didn't need it then and I certainly don't need it now."

"Do I really bring trouble every time I come back in town?" Taylor asked exasperated. She didn't let her sisters respond. "Because I thought that was your former boss. By the way, Mom and Dad did tell me everything that you did go through with Ms. Davis." She gave her younger sister a sympathetic look. "And I want to let you know that I'm really sorry. I had no idea. What a bitch."

"It doesn't matter now. Victoria is where she belongs," Haley replied as she processed her own words. Taylor was right. That Thanksgiving was two years ago. Two years ago. Why was she still angry with her sister? It wasn't fair considering she did forgive Julian. And she has been able to put her past with Victoria behind her. She should forgive her sister. Her mother had always said love means giving chances when there was no more chances left to give. Haley wanted to give her sister a second chance.

"So are you." Taylor looked at her surprised. "You're right. You did apologized for bringing Julian when you knew better. And I forgive you for that. I know you have felt like the black sheep of the family, but I think the truth is we all stir up trouble sometimes. Look at me. I stuck my nose where it doesn't belong and I got arrested and thrown in jail." Her sisters couldn't help but smile at that. "That's a story I won't be telling Jamie."

Taylor had a twinkle in her eyes. "Are you kidding? Those stories are the best kind of stories to tell." She looked from Quinn to Haley. "So are you really serious? I can stay?"

Haley nodded. "Yeah, it wouldn't be right if I didn't invite all of my sisters to my baby shower. I'm willing to give you a second chance." Taylor and Haley turned to Quinn with interest. Quinn gave in as well and the three sisters embraced in a tight hug.

They heard a click as they saw their mother taking a photo of them. She was smiling a mile wide. "I knew if you girls would just talk it out, you three would make up. Now where's Vivian? I want a picture of all four of my girls."

The sisters posed happily for their mother before Haley remembered her cake and her presents. She was so excited to open her gifts and she couldn't wait to see what she had received from her family and friends. As she opened each gift, she wasn't surprised to find most of them were baby clothes. And it wasn't just one outfit. There were several outfits in each box. Haley thanked each one of the recipients politely. She hoped Jamie would have a chance to wear the clothes. She knew how fast newborns grew in their first year.

To her relief, there were a few guests who had bought Jamie things other than clothes. Brooke and Millie were the very few who had given Haley a couple of baby books. She was grateful for the gifts and she was looking forward to reading them to Jamie. The joy continued as the rest of the gifts were opened.

As the party settled down, Haley sadly said good-bye to each of her guest. It was several minutes before there were only a few guests remaining. It was that time as Peyton, Millie, Taylor, Lydia and Quinn cleaned up when Haley pulled Brooke aside. There was a special request Haley wanted to ask Brooke, but she wanted to do it privately.

"Is everything okay?" Brooke asked. "Did I do something wrong?"

Haley just gave her a wide smile, putting her fears to rest. Haley didn't even hesitate before she spoke. "Nathan and I want you to be James's godmother."

Nathan and Haley had the discussion early on of who would be chosen as godparents. Of course, Lucas would be Jamie's godfather. Nathan had decided that back when he thought Rachel was going to have his baby. Haley agreed. As for godmother, Nathan and Haley had to discuss it. Both Quinn and Peyton were potential candidates, but they realized Brooke would be perfect for the job.

Brooke gasped in surprise. She embraced Haley in a gentle hug. "Haley, I would be honored to his godmother. And unlike my own ungodly mother, I will so kick ass at this."

Haley laughed. "I know you will." She grew serious. "As long as you don't say "kick ass" around him."

Brooke nodded. "Right. Sorry." Haley laughed again before they embraced in another hug. "Thank you. I promise you won't regret it." She then heard her name being called and she went to see what help she could provide Lydia.

Haley saw Quinn looking at her. "So you made her godmother? Good because I think she deserves it. Just promise me you will make me godmother for your second child. You are having a second child, right? Because I would hate for Jamie to be an only child."

Haley gave her a look. "I haven't even had my first baby and you're already talking about my second child. Shouldn't you be focusing on your wedding?"

Quinn didn't respond as she went back to cleaning up the club. However, everyone stopped their work when Lucas arrived with little Kendall. Kendall reached out for her mama and Brooke took her from her daddy's arms. "You're getting heavy," Brooke noted. "What has Grandma Lydia been feeding you?"

Lydia smiled. "I don't know what you are talking about. Grandma Lydia has been spoiling her in the toy department," she defended. "You should really start thinking about your plan for her birthday." Her daughters gave her a look. "I know her birthday isn't until May, but it's never too early to start planning."

"Thanks for the suggestion, but I think we'll wait until after our nephew is born," Lucas replied. "We don't want to take our focus away from Nathan and Haley."

"Or our godson," Brooke said. Lucas looked at her. "I'm going to be Jamie's godmother."

Lucas gave her a wide smile. "Wow, that's quite an honor. Are you sure you're up for the job?" Brooke nodded. Lucas embraced Haley in a gentle hug. "Thank you," he whispered. "She really deserves it."

"I know she does," Haley whispered back. She then felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and let out a groan. Everyone turned to her and began asking her questions. She wanted to say she was fine, but she knew she would be lying. "I think there's something wrong."

Lydia took charge right away. "Let's get you to the hospital. Lucas, help me get her to the car. Peyton, call Nathan and tell him to meet us there." Peyton nodded. "We'll keep you girls updated, but I'm sure there's nothing to worry about." Haley wasn't convinced and her mother seemed to read her mind. "Your baby will be fine. Just keep saying that to yourself and it will end up being true." Haley just nodded as they left the club.
