Chapter 10

Rey sat silently on the floor beside Finn. Chewie had delicately laid him on a bunk on aboard the ship she think he had called the Millenium Falcon? Her Shriiwook wasn't very good but she could understand him a little and she was grateful for that. What Rey couldn't understand in his words she could with his emotions, they were clawing at her the pain of his loss both for Han Solo and the loss he was feeling over Ben. The betrayal and devastation for what Ben had done to someone he loved he couldn't understand it and neither could Rey. She was doing her best to block the Wookie's emotions but she was so distraught herself she'd had little luck putting her defenses up.

It took time but they came to land on a planet where people were running and shouting with a mixture of joy and fear. There were so many emotions running rampant she was feeling overwhelmed by it. A small group of people had rushed onto the ship and back off with Finn on a gurney she made to follow them but Chewbacca put a hand on her shoulder to hold her back. She sensed his hesitation on if she was trust worthy but it was only a moment before Rey was approached by an aging woman.

"You" Was all Rey could manage to get out. Rey could feel the force in the woman, it was strong but not focused the way others were. She was powerful with the force but untrained and out of touch with it Rey realized. Rey hadn't realized it but she was crying.

"Don't cry my child, come with me" Leia held a hand out to her but Rey looked at it skeptically. "I'm Leia, Ben is my son" Leia's voice was soft and kind she knew she would have to earn Rey's trust and that was just what she had planned to do. Rey reluctantly put her tiny hand in Leia's and Leia made to lead her off.

"General that child is" A man with dark curling hair approached Leia swiftly but the woman put her hand up to silence him.

"I know who she is Poe" Was all she said and kept walking tugging the small girl with her.

"But General she could be a sp-" But Leia cut him off with a glaring stare.

"I will speak with her Poe" Poe wasn't happy with General Organa being so casual about a First Order apprentice on their base and he followed behind them both. He gave a short pause when he saw how timid the child looked and when she looked up at him her green eyes glowed with unfallen tears and she looked afraid of him.

Leia led Rey into a small room with a round table surrounded by chairs, she pulled out a chair but Rey was too nervous to sit down. Leia sighed and resigned herself to sitting across from where Rey had chosen to stand. There was an awkward silence, Leia noticed how Rey kept turning to look at the door and she wasn't sure if the child wanted to run away or was afraid that someone would come in.

"No one will hurt you here Rey" Leia's voice was filled with a comfort Rey hadn't known before but the girl nodded finally choosing to sit down in the chair Leia had pulled out for her. She pulled her knee's to her chest and wrapped her arms around them making her body as small as possible.

Leia watched the child for a few moments unsure of what kind of comfort to provide her. Leia really didn't know anything about her other than that she had been with Ben.

"Where are you from Rey?" Leia decided that was a good place to start. "I was a princess on a planet called Alderaan, but now I am the leader of this resistance. We want to make the galaxy better and safer"

"A princess?" Rey peeked her head up over her knee's slowly and Leia smiled. "I am Rey, I'm from Jakku I'm 7 years old" Her timid voice was still shaking and her eyes rimmed red from the tears she'd wiped away.

"Jakku?" Leia felt an immediate concern and appraised the child again. Yes, there were clear signs she hadn't had an easy life. "How long were you with Ben Rey?" Leia didn't sense much darkness in the child but she needed to understand what her son had been doing with her.

"um, A few months?" Rey had lost track of time when they were in space. She slept when she needed to and woke up she'd had enough and without defined days or nights it made time disorienting. "Is Ben a prince?" Old Lady Kanda had told Rey fairy tales about prince's and princesses. She remembered on about a Princess who married pirates it had been her favorite.

"I suppose in a way he is" Leia couldn't help but chuckle. This child went from being a First Order apprentice to a child with one question. It brought her relief to know that there was still childish innocence in Rey. "Rey" Leia's voice became serious. "Did Ben hurt you at all?" Leia wasn't sure if she wanted to know the answer to the question or not but she needed to know. How lost was Ben, how far had Snoke pushed him.

Rey's face scrunched in thought but she shook her head. "No Ben never really hurt me. Maybe on accident once but he felt bad" Leia was more relieved than she expected to be. Good this meant that she had done something right when raising Ben. "But General Hux, he wanted to do things with me." Her voice was quiet. "Sex, I don't really know what it is but I think it's for adults but he wanted that" Rey's cheeks turned a shade of pink showing her embarrassment.

Leia felt sick. Rey could tell by Leia's reaction that Leia knew what sex was and her reaction made Rey think it was a bad thing. "Rey he didn't, he didn't do that did he?" Leia's words were forced and she found herself with a desire to strike down the man who thought of touching the child before her in such a way.

"No, he gave me to Snoke instead" For a brief second Leia almost imagined that being worse, almost. "Snoke was looking for me but Luke Skywalker taught me how to hide when I was little. I don't really remember what Snoke said but he" There was a knock on the door. Rey hugged herself tighter and buried her head in her knee's hiding. She knew who was there, but Leia stood up and opened the door.

It was Poe. He was carrying a variety of things in his arms, Leia gave him a soft smile and let him in the room. Rey peeked up at him slowly.

"Hello, my name it Poe. I've brought you a couple things I thought you might need" He was speaking quietly. He knew he had already frightened her and he really hadn't meant to so he wanted to make up for it. He place his arm full onto the table in front of her and sat down in the chair to her left. "I noticed your robes are wet and I thought you might be cold" He offered her a wool blanket. Rey eyed him suspiciously and gave a look to Leia as if she were asking for her opinion or permission and Leia smiled with a small nod. Keeping her head low she reached out slowly and took the blanket.

She had been so preoccupied with her thoughts she hadn't even realized she was soaked and cold. "I also have a new set of robes for you" He slid a bundle of off white fabric across the table towards her. She was relieved to have new clothes.

"Rey we'll step outside for a few minutes so you can get dressed. Do you need help?" It was Leia asking. Rey shook her head.

"No I can get dressed." With that the two stepped into the hallway. Rey worked as fast as she could but her wet clothes were sticking to her. A she pulled her long sleeve shirt over her head the braid Ben had put in her hair days before fell out. It disappointed Rey that she ruined the beautiful braid but she felt much more comfortable in the new robes. The light color made her skin look far more tan than it was now. Rey couldn't help notice how her time in space had lightened her skin, but she didn't mind skin color wasn't important.

She knocked on the door when she finished dressing and sat back down in the chair wrapping herself in the blanket Poe had given her. It wasn't as cold here as it was in space but it wasn't nearly as warm as Jakku had been. Leia and Poe entered again sitting back down.

"Thank you" Rey spoke with a soft uncertainty as she looked at Poe. She was grateful he had thought to make her more comfortable but she was still weary of him.

"I'm sorry I scared you. We want you to feel comfortable here. Most don't end up with the first order by choice" He made a grimace at his last statement and Rey felt a spark of a memory from him, just a flash but she caught enough to understand.

"You were the pilot" He nodded and gave her a sad smile. "Ben tortured you didn't he?" Poe gave Leia a confused look at the name.

"Ben?" He asked and Leia let out a sigh. "Kylo Ren. Poe there's more you should know about him" Leia hadn't told him or anyone at the base the truth of who Kylo Ren was to her. In part she didn't want their sympathy but she also didn't want their blame.

"You came to me in the dream right?" Rey asked. "Snoke had tried to get into my head and Ben was trying to help me be more comfortable. He showed me a big house, beautiful fields filled with flowers" Poe was surprised, her voice was filled with a child like wonder now as if Kylo Ren wasn't some sort of monster.

"He is not a monster." She said firmly glaring at Poe who just put his hands up in defeat.

"Rey you said you've seen Luke?" Leia sounded hopeful.

Rey nodded. "It was years ago though. He was going to take me away from Jakku but my owner wouldn't let him. He said it wasn't in his way to just take me" Rey paused in thought for a moment then continued. "He taught me some things though. He taught me to build walls to hide from others who have the force he said I would be in danger if they found me"

"Like Snoke?" Poe asked this time and Rey nodded.

"Snoke wants me. I don't really understand why but he kept trying to get in my head. He's not like Ben, his darkness doesn't have any holes. Theres no light in him I can't tell if there ever was" Leia wanted to give the child a hug. She could tell that Rey had seen some of the darkest things the galaxy had to offer and it was a miracle she managed to have such a strong grasp in the light. Seeing the vulnerability in Rey made her heart ache for her son. It made her feel twinges of regret for not realizing what Snoke was doing sooner. Leia was surprised when she felt a tiny hand rest on top of hers. She looked up to see Rey giving her a small smile.

"I believe in him. There's light in him too" Poe could feel the air in the room shift from being clouded with doubts to now being with the warmth of hope. He looked down at Rey incredulously, this child was exuding so much hope that she was changing the atmosphere around her. He suddenly felt foolish for having any concern over her loyalties. She may not be loyal to the resistance, but she had faith in the good in people. Poe sent out a small prayer that her faith would lead others down a better path rather than leading her down a dark one.

Rey was becoming tired, she was burning through a lot more energy than she was conscious of and it was influencing her. She blinked slowly letting out a yawn. Leia let out a small chuckle standing up.

"You must be exhausted my dear. Lets find you a place to rest" Rey nodded slowly sliding off the chair wobbling on her feet unsteadily as her muscles protested the movement. Poe put a gentle hand on her shoulder so she wouldn't fall over.

"Do you need any help General?" Poe asked looking to Leia motioning at the tired child but she shook her head in response.

"No, I'm going to put her in my room for now. I don't want anyone else talking to her." She walked around the table and took Rey's hand before turning back to him. "There is one thing you can do. Go out and let me know what the others think of her. I need to know she'll be safe here and I want to know what they're saying" Poe nodded and the General led Rey out of the room and down a corridor as Poe hurried off in a different direction.

Rey wasn't used to holding someone's hand like this, but she liked it. Leia made her feel safe and warm, she could trust Ben's mom. Leia's room wasn't far from where they had been talking. The girls released hands and Leia motioned for Rey to jump up onto her bed so Rey did. Leia scavenged in a drawer of her dresser for a minute and came to sit next to Rey revealing a hair brush.

"I noticed your hair was braided when you arrived here. Would you like me to put it back up for you?" Leia began to brush the girls hair lulling her into a stupor of comfort and pre-sleep.

"Would you please? Ben braided my hair for me. He said you taught him how" This surprised Leia a great deal. She had taught Ben to braid hair when he was a very young boy, on Alderaan it was a sign of affection usually between a man and a woman. Before Leia could help herself a small tear fell down her cheek.

"Ben put that braid in your hair?" Leia ran her brush through Rey's long dark hair, it was still damp from the snow on the Star Killer base.

"Yeah, he didn't say much but I knew what he was feeling. He was thinking of you." Rey paused for a short yawn, her eyes were growing heavier. "I don't think he realizes it, but he misses you"

More tears fell from Leia's, the innocent words of a child who didn't really know what she was saying had brought Leia Organa-Solo, the leader of the resistance to tears. She missed her son so desperately, she would do anything to have him back.

As Leia twisted Rey's hair around for the final time, securing it with a small pin she looked down and realized Rey was fast asleep sitting up. Leia smiled down at her. 'If I'd had a daughter Rey, I hope she would have been like you'
