Chapter 8:

Hiccup landed on a beach not too long after. He sighed as he looked around. He was so close to the mountains that lead to the direction that Astrid had pointed out to him, but he was hungry.

Toothless seemed to be too.

Once Hiccup was safely off, Toothless dived into the ocean and managed to grab some fish before crawling out, tail limp. He fired a small fire into the wood that Hiccup had collected in the span of time that he had been gone.

After that, they managed to sleep for a while, before waking up and moving on when dawn rose.

Toothless soared through the open air. Hiccup sighed on his back. They were so close to the mountains. Now that he thought about it, he had no idea whether the dragon trainer would even help him.

As they reached the mountains, a catapult launched at him for no reason. "WHOA!" Hiccup barely managed to dodge the boulder in time, before more came firing at him. "Come on, bud!" He ordered, executing inhuman turns as they left their pursuers behind.

Eventually, they reached an area which Hiccup knew they have never explored before now, and he tugged on Toothless' harness, urging caution. The dragon flicked a ear in acknowledgement, soaring higher into the sky in order to blend in with the clouds.

The area beneath them appeared desolate to the naked eye, with smoking ruins left on islands that they passed. Big or small, they seemed to have been laid siege on. The thought worried the young viking as he tightened his grip on Toothless. Toothless shared his rider's concern, flicking his ear back once more.

And then they reached the cave.

"What is that?" Hiccup breathed, looking at the immense ice structure rising out of the sea with no apparent source. Light bounced about on the inside, but it was otherwise eerily silent. Curiosity overtaking him, Hiccup leaned down to whisper into Toothless' ear. "Let's get closer bud. But stay hidden."

Toothless nodded and soared ever closer. Eventually, they reached to what looked like an entrance. But upon glancing closer, it was clear that there were dragons guarding it.

"Plasma blast, Toothless," Hiccup said, "over there." He nodded at an area far away enough that, if the dragons were to leave their post, he and Toothless would be able to make it out.

Toothless gave a whine of protest, clearly disliking the idea of walking into a trap with no other exits as far as they could see, but eventually gave in to his insistent rider.

"Let's go."

The inside of the cave was dark and dimly lit. In contrast to the illusion that the outside gave, there was little to no light visible.

"What is this, Toothless?"

Toothless gave a shrug as he continued to soar inside, giving a worried whine.

Then, without warning, Hiccup was swept off of Toothless, leaving the dragon roaring in outrage as he fell to the ground. Hiccup yelped as he reached down, clawing at his captor's…claws…?

He glanced up, seeing a masked rider on a four-winged dragon, deftly avoiding any stalagmites and making their way inside. "Toothless!" He shrieked. "Let go of me!" He turned to roar at the rider. "Toothless!"

Toothless' roars echoed down the cave.

Eventually, Hiccup was dropped in a substantially wider clearing than what he was expecting. Dragons surrounded him from all areas, leaving him unsure of his footing. Many of these dragons were nothing like he had ever seen before, and he wasn't sure how to react now.

The masked rider stopped and slammed their staff into the ground several times, sending some rattling aching throughout the place.

"Who are you?" Hiccup demanded. "And what did you do to my dragon?!"

The rider merely watched him cautiously.

"Are you the dragon tamer that everyone spoke of?" Hiccup asked again, backing away. As he did so, the light captured the scar on his cheek, causing the woman to let out a sharp exhale.

The taller one removed her helmet, revealing bright green eyes, a slim face, and braided auburn hair. There was on mistaking the earnest green gaze, or the expression of curiosity on her face.

"Who…who are you?"

"Hiccup?" The figure asked, There was a tremulous tone in her voice.

"Sorry," Hiccup backed away as the other person stepped forward. He couldn't believe it. Everyone, even his dad, had said that she…"Should I know you?"

"No." The lady withdrew her hand. She looked up hesitantly. "But a mother never forgets."
