First Shoot Out
Like any office in downtown Roppongi, their target's office stood atop of one of the many tall high-rise commercial buildings complete with a receptionist, a coffee shop, and a healthy dose of bustling foot traffic. As they exited the car, Kaito could not help but look up to admire the architectural details on the facade. The light managed to bounce off the windows just enough to reflect it into a myriad of colours that could be admired without burning the eye. A quick cough to his side drew his attention towards his companion.
"We're not here for sightseeing." Vermouth mentioned monotonously before walking towards the set of automatic doors. Kaito took a moment to center himself before taking a step forward.
Vermouth waited in front of an opened elevator with bored eyes, as though it was a chore. Though Kaito did not doubt that it was not. He merely strolled leisurely towards Vermouth, giving the women a casual smile before pressing the button for their target's floor. Vermouth huffed, as though displeased, but settled herself to lean against the back railings. The easy and lighthearted elevator music killed the atmosphere but it was something Kaito could settle with.
In no time, they arrived at their destined floor. Kaito stepped out first, the receptionist greeting him with a warm smile before asking "I thought you left with our CEO?"
"If only." Kaito replied in kind, "You know him, always forgetful. He sent me back to pick up some documents."
"Will you be staying until lunch time then? There's a really great salad place that I've been dying to try and there's this really cute waiter there…" They gossiped until the phone at her desk rang and she slowly sauntered over to answer with a bored look on her face. Waving cheerfully, Kaito entered the neat office, remembering to close and lock the door just in case.
There was nothing out of the ordinary, with large glass windows at the back overlooking the city view, a heavy wooden desk sat near with a high-back leather chair tucked up against it. The lack of computer of any sorts was bothersome but a quick rummage through the drawers, with one drawer that needed picking, yielded a slim laptop. It was the top-of-the-line type with a metallic case and a fingerprint scanner to the side. Kaito cracked his knuckles in preparation for the long and arduous task of hacking into the computer, which was a job his detective is better at than he was.
It took him an hour to unlock the machine, another fifteen minutes was spent looking through the folders, an extra ten to trying to copy the files, which he managed to hit a snag with because one folder was designated as a 'Read Only' and refused to be copied no matter what tricks Kaito tried. In total, two hours were spent inside the silent office with Kaito muttering choice expletives every so often. He was quite surprised that the secretary did not knock on the door or tried to enter the office.
By the end of everything, he felt drained. Physically, he was fine, but it was the mentality that was hitting hard. 'It's no different than heists…' He tries to convince himself, as he made sure all the surfaces he touched were wiped clean of possible evidence before stepping out of the door. A glance at the secretary's table revealed why the woman did not bother him. Seated on the chair was Vermouth in disguise.
"You've been demoted to lookout?" He asked with a quirk of his brows, all his tiredness seems to have faded ever-so-slightly because of the rising amusement. He did not hide his action of peering underneath the table, just in case she stashed the previous secretary underneath.
"Do you think I'm so sloppy?" She asked with a scowl on her face, easily reading Kaito's intention. "I'm here to make sure you do your job without interruptions and that girl would most likely interrupt you with inane gossip." She held out a hand for the storage USB, which Kaito handed over without hesitation. Little did she know he had another copy stowed away in his clothes, ready to be dropped off to Shinichi when the chance arises.
"And what did you do with her then?" He asked, half out of curiosity and half to gather more intel. If they really had disposed of her, it would be in Kaito's best interest to pass the information along to the police.
"I've temporarily relieved her of her duties, like a good friend that I am to her. Even offered her a lunch discount coupon for her efforts." Her smile was unnerving, as though daring Kaito to question her intentions and use that as leverage or, on worst case scenario, as justification for removing him. Kaito decided to take things on face value instead of pursuing further to avoid the confrontation. She raised an eyebrow at the obvious retreat. "At least you know when to fold." She commented with a smile, turning her chair back towards the computer terminal.
Ignoring the strange tone of voice, Kaito walked over the the waiting lift. It was all too convenient for it to be standing there for him to board and for a minute he feared it was rigged. Kaito did not step into the left until Vermouth decided to join him on the ride. Both took it down to the ground floor under the soft elevator music and exited.
"Darling!" A male voice, called out in his direction. Vermouth quickly branched off, taking up hiding in the shadows of a nearby pillar. "I've been waiting for you!" He was pounced on, a hug so tightly that restrained his hands. Kaito had, on instinct, tried to struggle out of the hold only to pause momentarily when he caught a whiff of recognizable scent.
"Why are you here?" Kaito leaned back to take a look at the features. Though the face matched nothing in his memory, the bright blue colour of the pupils was the same as his detective's.
"To take you out to lunch of course." The smile looked sincere, and Kaito hoped none of The Organisation's agents managed to find the small flaw in the expression. "You've been gone for so long that I've missed you." At least this last phrase was the truth.
"I had work." Kaito pushed back forcefully, keeping in character, "you said you were busy so I didn't call." Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw several suited characters walking towards him. Vermouth kept out of the way, with a slightly fearful look to her eyes as though she was urging Kaito to leave in that instance.
The bulges and strange shapes to the jacket alerted Kaito that these people were no ordinary people, most likely the agents that Kaito feared. Shinichi, who still had his arms wrapped around his waist, tensed his grip and tries to pull Kaito closer.
"Excuse me sir." One of the agents tapped on his detective's shoulder. "I believe she does not wished for your company at the moment."
"That's absurd." Shinichi flung the hand away dramatically, hand accidentally scratching Kaito's mask and making a rather nice rip on the latex. Kaito had wonder how his detective managed to make his nails so sharp and deadly.
With almost comedic eyes, Shinichi saw Kaito's face rip against his actions. Kaito saw the moment of recognition before it narrowed into some calculative.
"You're not who you say you are." He growled out with a ferocity of a mother tiger, it made Kaito all tingly inside to hear such a tone.
"Ara? Aren't you an insightful one." Kaito channeled Vermouth's personality. It would not do for the surrounding agents to suspect him of something.
"Who are you." It was the first time for Kaito to face off his detective in such a manner. Even when he had been KID, his detective's tone erred on the playful side. Yet, now, combine the demanding tone with the narrowing eyes, Kaito can understand why criminals immediately confess their crimes under such conditions. His detective just has this presence that demands for obedience.
"Wouldn't you like to know." Kaito glanced around the hall. It was strange to see so few people lingering. There were a few stragglers, a few curious workers staying stationary under the protection of nearby pillars or corner. "And? What do you plan on doing with this information now Handsome?"
"I'm going to arrest you." The smirk, so often seen on the confident detective on the verge of revealing the culprit or unveiling the truth, was directed at Kaito. Kaito had to suppress the shudder threatening to appear as a gun pointed directly at his chest courtesy of his detective. "If you're not who you are, then you're likely the person we need. Come quietly and we'll spare you."
Kaito was not sure why his detective was acting like the criminals he chase, nor was he sure why Shinichi was willing to hold a gun towards him, either way he knew it was not yet the time to return to his detective's side. Not when he had finally gain some foothold in The Organisation and able to gather more evidence and information.
"Unfortunately I'll have to decline." Kaito made a step back towards the wall of agents that had closed in, hoping to escape his detective. There was a flash of disappointment and pain reflected within the sapphire orbs but it was quickly masked over with the hardening of eyes and ferocious glare.
"You won't get away that easily." As though by magic, metallic shutters slammed down on the front entrance and surrounding windows. "We have you surrounded and you're ours."
Immediately, the agents surrounding him burst into action as they all pulled up their guns, pointing at his detective. Kaito feared for Shinichi at the point, knowing there was little chance for his detective to escape unscathed.
"You should know better than to pull that trick on me Lovely." The smirk on his detective's face was very much like KID's before pulling off some ridiculous stunt. It should have been Kaito's first clue as this whole setup was his detective's plan. But Kaito was too focused on figuring out a way of having them all escape without much injuries. Although, hearing a term of endearment coming from Shinichi is a change and Kaito realised at that moment how much he missed his detective's company.
"Now then Lovely, tell me where did you hide the original." Shinichi stalked over without caring the many guns pointed at him, "I promise to have the law look more favourably on your actions." Shinichi reached out, as though to touch Kaito, only to be knocked back by a gunman's hand and held at gunpoint. "Looks like your bodyguards have other ideas though."
"And you think I'd give up the answers so easily?" Kaito jutted out his hips, hand resting on the hip bone as he posed nonchalantly. "I don't even know who you are and you expect me to answer? Really, where are you gentlemanly manners?"
"Too bad really." He shrugged, gun coming down on the nearest agent and knocking the man in a backhand fashion. The rest of the agents were stunned for a moment, enough time for the few straggling workers to pounce on them. In the midst of the confusion, Shinichi stood in front of Kaito with gun resting directly above his heart. "I'll be nice and give you an opportunity, join us."
"Sorry, no can-do. I'm afraid I've been promised to someone else." Kaito laced his words with meanings. If Rum's agent were listening, which Kaito does not doubt as Vermouth must be nearby as she had been with him in the elevator, then they would think that Kaito belonged to Rum. Though in reality, Kaito was declaring his intention towards his beloved detective. And by the slight tinge of pink, it seems that his detective received the message in full.
"If that's the case, then it seems you leave me with no choice." With a shrug, Shinichi turned away and Kaito sighed in relief.
But all too soon, his detective turned back and shot at Kaito. Pain blossomed at his chest and he dared to look down at the growing patch of red. He was suddenly bereft of all his strength and slumped down into the ground amongst the sound of gunshots. Before Kaito fell into a heap on the floor, he saw pain flashing through his detective's face.
