"Alright, it's done!" Spencer said proudly as him and Carly stepped back to admire his finished sculpture.
"Wow, it's a pretty cool looking sculpture of George Washington riding a unicycle," Carly said, impressed.
"Thanks for the help, kiddo," Spencer said, clapping her on the back. "You and Sam really saved me. I wouldn't have finished this by tomorrow without you guys."
"Where is Sam?" Carly asked, checking her phone. "We sent her to get us smoothies three hours ago. Where could she have gone?"
"I dunno, Canada," Spencer shrugged.
"Dude, Canada's not the answer to everything," Carly said, rolling her eyes.
"It will be one day!"
"Let me try calling her again," Carly sighed. "I hope she's okay. I've been worried about her ever since Freddie started bringing that Rebecca girl around here. You know, Gibby's cousin who looks just like Sam."
"I'm sure she's fine," Spencer assured him, examining his sculpture. "Hey, I think I have more realistic powdered wig to use for this down in our storage unit. Let me go run and grab it."
"Um, why do you have a powdered wig?" Carly frowned.
"It's from a bet with Socko!" Spencer exclaimed as he rushed out the door.
Carly was just about to pull up Sam's number on her phone when the apartment door opened again and Freddie walked in.
"Hey," Carly greeted him. "Do you know where Sam is? She was supposed to get me and Spencer smoothies while we working on Spencer's sculpture but she never came back."
"Oh yeah, I saw her a few minutes ago," Freddie said. "I think she went home now, though."
"What? But she had our smoothies!"
"Yeah…she kind of drank both of those," Freddie told her.
"Well, no surprise there," Carly sighed, flopping onto the couch. "So, what are you up to tonight? You have plans with Rebecca?"
"I was supposed to take her some fancy restaurant that would totally wipe out my savings," Freddie replied. "But I think those plans got canceled when we broke up."
"What?" Carly gasped. "You and Rebecca broke up?"
"Yeah," Freddie nodded.
"Well-Well did she do it? Or-Or did you?" Carly asked slowly.
"I guess you could say I did," Freddie replied. "But really it was Sam who ended it."
"Um, huh?"
"Yeah, Rebecca and I were at the Groovy Smoothie while Sam was there getting your smoothies," Freddie explained. "And then Rebecca came over and, well, she started yelling because I was only going to buy her one smoothie and she said that meant I was a terrible boyfriend and all this chiz. And then Sam starting yelling at her saying how out of line she was and that she-she didn't deserve to be with someone like me and that things were over between the two of us."
"Aw man," Carly sighed. "Look, Freddie, Sam shouldn't have done that. But don't be too mad at her. She probably-"
"I'm not mad at her," Freddie cut her off. "Sam did me a huge favor, getting rid of Rebecca. I don't know if you noticed, but she was sort of-"
"-Awful?" Carly finished knowingly.
"Um, yeah," Freddie nodded. "Awful. But thanks to Sam, I'll never have to deal with her again. You should've been there, Carls, it was amazing. Rebecca didn't stand a chance against Sam. And afterwards Sam and I were hanging out at the Groovy Smoothie for a few hours and she was telling me about an old Juvie buddy of hers that would pelt Rebecca's car with rotten eggs and sardines if I paid him twenty bucks. Obviously I'm not gonna do that, but it was fun to fantasize about."
"Well congratulations on your break-up," Carly chuckled. "Glad to see you're not all torn up."
"Oh and Sam made this hilarious doodle of Rebecca getting mauled by bears on the back on a napkin," Freddie continued. "It was nice seeing some of her artwork that didn't involve me being the one injured."
"Yeah, I'm sure it was," Carly said, noticing how Freddie's face was lighting up every time he mentioned Sam's name. "Hey, Freddie? I've got ask, did you-"
"And Sam also had a few nicknames made up for Rebecca too," Freddie said, apparently not hearing Carly. "I can't repeat them, my mom's just across the hall and if she heard them come out my mouth she'd have me under house arrest so fast my head would spin. But-"
"Freddie," Carly said, a bit louder this time.
"What?" Freddie asked.
Carly took a deep breath, anxious to ask the question that had been on her mind for a while now. "Did you really never notice that Rebecca looked almost exactly like Sam? The two could've been sisters, for crying out loud!"
Freddie looked down at his feet and didn't reply.
"You did know," Carly said softly. "Is that-that's why you started dating Rebecca in the first place, wasn't it? You were trying to compensate for not being in a relationship with Sam anymore."
Freddie still didn't reply.
"Freddie?" Carly said gently. "Freddie, are you-"
"What are you, psychic?" Freddie mumbled, finally looking back up at her.
"So it's true then?"
"I-Yes," Freddie admitted. "I realized how much she looked like Sam. When Gibby introduced me to her I thought-I thought if I started seeing someone who looked like her and acted sort of like her, it-it would make everything easier and-well, the point is it didn't work. She might've looked like Sam, but that was it."
Carly frowned. "So you're saying…do you still have feelings for-"
"Look, I need to get home, it's pretty late," Freddie said quickly. "But I'll see you at school tomorrow, okay?"
"Um, alright," Carly said, dismissing the question she had been about to ask. "I'll see you tomorrow."
…..
He's done with Rebecca, Sam thought for the millionth time that day. He's done with her.
After Rebecca had left, Sam and Freddie had spent the rest of the day together making up for the time they lost while Freddie had been, well, occupied with her. It had been fun, sitting and sipping smoothies while they bashed Rebecca.
But she had to keep reminding herself; just because Freddie wasn't with Rebecca anymore, it didn't mean anything for them.
Just then she heard a knock at the door.
"Freddie?" Sam frowned as she answered. "What are you doing here? I thought you went home after the Groovy Smoothie."
"I-I did," Freddie said. "I just came by to, um-um…Rebecca left a few things at my place. Just some lip gloss and a magazine, nothing big. But, um, I was wondering what-what you thought I should do with it."
"Throw it away, duh," Sam shrugged. "What else would you do with it?"
"Oh, um, right," Freddie nodded. "I just didn't know if that was too harsh or…thanks. I-I'll throw them out when I get home."
"Why'd you come all the way here to ask that?" Sam frowned. "You could've just used this crazy thing called your phone. Or walked across the hall and asked Carly, she would've told you the same thing."
"Eh, guess-guess I didn't think it through," Freddie said lamely. "Oh well…hey, now that I'm here, you-you mind if I stay for a little bit?"
"Um, sure," Sam nodded. "There's not much to do here, though. I was just about to go surf the web or something."
"Oh, well then maybe I should leave," Freddie said quickly. "I don't want to keep you from-"
"No!" Sam said at once. "No, um, we-we can watch a movie. My mom 'borrowed' a few DVDs from her ex a few days ago. Most of them look pretty stupid but…"
"Yeah, yeah a movie sounds good," Freddie said, sitting on his couch, though his thoughts were straying far from some silly film. He watched as Sam slid a disc into the beat up DVD player on her T.V. She sat down next to him, though not as close as they would've back when they were dating…
Freddie glanced over at her and noticed she seemed almost as distracted as he did.
"Hey, Sam?" he said, deciding not to hesitate in asking the question he had really come over here for. "I wanted to ask you something…."
"What?" Sam asked.
"What you said earlier to Rebecca, about-about me being a good boyfriend," Freddie started. "Did you mean it? You really thought I was a good boyfriend when we were together?"
Sam's face turned slightly red. "I-I was trying to make a point to her," Sam mumbled. "You know, about-about how you didn't deserve to be treated the way she was treating you."
"Oh," Freddie said, his face falling. "Oh, so-so you just-never mind."
Sam bit the corner of the lip. "That-That doesn't mean it wasn't true," she whispered.
Freddie looked back up at her. "What?"
"You were a pretty great boyfriend while we were dating," Sam admitted, giving him a small smile. "Even though you were stingy and nubbish. You still knew how to-to make me happy."
"Really?" Freddie said.
"Yeah," Sam nodded. "Look, you may not be the coolest guy around, but-but you don't have to settle for girls who treat you like you're a loser. Like Rebecca…or-or me I guess."
"You?"
"Come on," Sam said. "You may have been a great boyfriend while we were together but we both know I wasn't exactly the best girlfriend. I was probably hardly any better than Rebecca was to you."
"Yes you were," Freddie said. "Trust me, you were a million times better than she was. And during our entire relationship you never once made me feel like a loser. You were a really good girlfriend, Sam. A great one even."
"No I-"
"Yes, you were," Freddie said firmly. "You made me feel…amazing when we were together. You kept me on my toes, you were always supportive, you-you were the best girlfriend I could've hoped for."
"Yeah, well," Sam said softly, shifting awkwardly in her seat. "Too bad it didn't work out between us then…"
"Yeah," Freddie sighed. "Too bad."
He couldn't take his eyes off of her. Her sad blue eyes and her golden curls that had fallen in front of her face, her soft, red lips that were practically calling out to him…
And almost as if an invisible hand had pushed his head down towards her, he kissed her.
He felt her tense up in shock at first, but a second later she relaxed and kissed him back with just as much passion and desperation.
When they pulled apart, Sam stared at him with a look of confusion and pure delight.
"I-I'm sorry," Freddie said, surprised at his own daring. "I-I-"
"Don't apologize," Sam said breathlessly. "Just do it again."
