Chapter 9

The first thing Raven became aware of was a warm tingle in her right hand. The second was the deep breathing and gentle snores of the presence next to her. Finally, the memory of her encounter on Azarath came rushing back, causing Raven to flinch and tense up in fear.

Jinx was awake almost instantly. Raven's hand was now clenching hers tightly and the beeping of the machine behind her indicated Raven's increased heart rate.

"Raven…" She breathed, leaning in closer to the Titan and slightly raising the lights with her powers.

Raven's eyes slowly opened, taking in her surroundings in surprise before meeting Jinx's intense and worried gaze.

"I'm… I'm in the tower?" Raven questioned.

The last thing she remembered was the man's power blocking her own, a searing pain, and then being pulled through dimensions. She had assumed he had taken her to her father.

"You pulled me back… how?" Raven asked incredulously.

"Don't I wish I knew the answer to that question." Jinx said with a nervous laugh. "I saw him hurting you and then felt you being taken and I guess I just kinda freaked. All I could think about was getting you out of there and next thing I knew you were in my arm- er, I mean, you were back." Jinx had looked away quickly.

Raven sat up slowly, realizing her right hand was being held by Jinx in her lap. Jinx seemed to remember this as well and quickly jerked her hand away. Raven felt a twinge of hurt at this action before remembering it was her fault Jinx now felt so uncomfortable around her.

"Jinx…" She began, the unfamiliar, pleading tone in her voice bringing pink eyes immediately back to hers.

The door to the medical bay slid open almost violently.

"Friend Raven! You are awake!" Starfire exclaimed, swooping into the room.

"Kid, you really gotta stop this unconscious thing or you'll end up with fewer brain cells than BB." Cyborg teased, heading for the machines still monitoring Raven's vitals and checking for any abnormalities.

"Hey!" Beast Boy protested.

"He's got a point." Robin said, taking a seat next to Raven's bed. "How are you feeling?" He asked her.

"I'm fine, really. I've got a long ways to go before I'm even close to Beast Boy's level." Raven replied, smirking at her green friend, who responded with a pout that didn't quite manage to hide his relief that Raven hadn't suffered any sever injuries or trauma.

"Your vitals all look fine. It was probably the shock of being yanked back to this dimension that caused your body to reboot." Cyborg said as he checked the computer screens before unhooking Raven from the different monitors.

"Sorry about that." Jinx mumbled.

"Don't be." Raven said, wanting nothing more than to reach out and take Jinx's hand again. "If you hadn't pulled me back I, well, I don't know what would have happened to me."

Jinx looked up and met Raven's eyes, feeling the now familiar tug in her stomach that seemed to occur every time those deep, purple orbs were focused on her.

"Yes, thank you Jinx." Robin said.

"Um, you're welcome." Jinx replied, shifting in her seat uncomfortably.

She looked at the other Titans and found they were all grinning warmly at her. Raven's fingertips brushed her own and Jinx suddenly stood up and began to back out of the room.

"I just realized how late it is. Giz and Mammoth are probably getting suspicious. Um, call me if you need me again but I should really, er, I should go."

Ignoring Raven's hurt and confused expression and the other Titans' confused looks, Jinx ran from the room without waiting for a response.

'Jinx, wait!'

It wasn't until Jinx had emerged from the underwater tunnel and was running through the city that she realized Raven's call had been heard in her mind.

Jinx stormed through the doors of the large factory-turned-apartment. She blatantly ignored Gizmo's outburst of questions and accusations about where she'd been. Mammoth only watched with concern in his eyes as the pink haired sorceress headed straight for the combat practice room.

"What the fuck is her deal!?" Gizmo yelled, turning to his much larger friend.

Mammoth just shrugged. "Just leave her alone." He advised.

An hour later, Jinx was dripping with sweat, every muscle in her body ached, but she continued running every obstacle course Gizmo had ever programmed. But the more she tried to ignore the thoughts swirling around painfully in her mind, the more they seemed to pound against her skull.

After dodging a blast of flame and several tricky laser beams, the simulated course flashed her completion time before shutting down. Jinx sank to the floor breathing heavily. Her arms and legs were shaking with exhaustion. She managed to walk slowly to the showers, sitting on the cold tile while the water poured down on her. It took a moment to realize that the water sliding down her face was now mixed with tears. She wiped at her eyes angrily but only felt the tears fall more swiftly. Burying her face in her hands, the image of Raven's face, full of hurt as she watched Jinx leave, filled the sorceress' mind. All she wanted was to run back to Raven and apologize. Her feelings for the Titan were confusing at best, but she knew with certainty that she never wanted to be the cause of Raven's pain. Bothering Jinx even further was the grateful looks the Titans had given her, the welcoming she'd felt in that Tower, and the incredible satisfaction of being one of the good guys.

Jinx cried harder. She wasn't one of the god guys. She would never truly be welcomed by the Teen Titans. And of course, Raven would never feel the same way she did about her.

"Your powers are dark, bad luck. How could you possibly ever use them for good?" Jinx said to herself angrily.

Raven's half demon. Her powers are literally darkness. And she uses them to save the world.

This thought allowed Jinx to calm down a little.

And even if I never become one of the good guys, they need my help with whatever is going on. Raven needs my help.

Jinx rose shakily to her feet and shut off the shower. Wrapping a fluffy white towel around her small frame, she walked wearily to her room.

I shouldn't have left like that. I shouldn't have freaked out.

Jinx crawled into her bed after dropping her towel to the floor. She resolved to call Raven and apologize as soon as she woke up. If this was the only god thing she ever did with her life, it would be enough, as long as Raven was safe. With this last thought and her mind still filled with the image of soft, purple, eyes, Jinx drifted off to sleep.

Raven had spent the better part of the last two hours sitting on her bed and staring at Jinx's com in her lap. After recounting the events of her journey and filling in the gaps of Jinx's version to the Titans, Raven had once again retreated to her room. No one had commented on Jinx's abrupt departure but Robin had asked that Raven let him know if Jinx contacted her.

After accepting that Trigon had her people and that there was currently nothing she could do about it, Raven was left to worry about the pink haired sorceress. She had sensed the confusion and conflict inside of Jinx before she'd run off. Now she was trying to respect the girl's privacy by not focusing on her emotions. However, there was only so much Raven could block out now that she and Jinx were so connected. About an hour ago, Raven had felt a wave of misery crash over her and Jinx's tear-streaked face had flashed across her mind. It took all of Raven's self-control to not immediately teleport to Jinx's side or, at the very least, call her. She found herself feeling irritated with her friends for interrupting her and Jinx's conversation when Raven had woken up. Maybe if she'd been able to say what she'd wanted, Jinx wouldn't have left.

Of course, it might have caused Jinx to leaven even sooner. She thought bitterly.

With a frustrated sigh, Raven lay back onto her bed and stared at the dark ceiling. She couldn't keep denying it. She was falling for Jinx, fast. And it terrified her.

It wasn't that Jinx was a girl; Raven had known she preferred females to males for years. It wasn't even that Jinx was, for lack of a better term, a bad guy. What terrified Raven was herself. True, she had learned to allow herself a lot more emotional freedom than she used to, but love and dating was an entirely different area. The other confusing part was the new connection she had with Jinx. Raven hated to think that her feelings were being manipulated or even manufactured by some unknown force. Sure, she'd found Jinx attractive and intriguing before everything had happened, and she'd felt more comfortable with the girl than she'd thought was possible before they'd even fully recognized the connection. But there were strange and powerful forces at work, and even Raven's incredible powers of intuition and self-awareness couldn't be sure what her heart felt.

Most importantly, whatever was going on with Trigon, it involved Jinx. And Raven knew that she would need Jinx to help her defeat her father a second time. She couldn't let whatever she felt for the sorceress get in the way of that. But at the same time, she knew she'd do whatever it took to keep Jinx safe.

With another sigh, Raven slipped the com into her pocket before teleporting to the roof of the tower. She levitated a few feet off the cement in her favorite spot overlooking the ocean. Closing her eyes, she began chanting and managed to let all thoughts of Trigon, his mysterious new ally, and Jinx drift to the back of her mind.

As the sun was setting, Raven's meditation was interrupted by her Titan com beeping in her pocket. There was a short message from Robin on the screen asking her to come downstairs. Feeling slightly guilty that her friends had been hard at work researching Trigon all day, Raven immediately teleported to the living room.

"You found something?" She asked hopefully, joining the group circled around Robin, several books lay open in front of him.

"I think so. It's pretty vague." Robin replied.

He handed her one of the books that referenced the prophecy of Raven's birthright. Purple eyes skimmed the page but nothing new stood out to her from the words she'd memorized by the time she could read. Raven looked at Robin expectantly.

"I've been reading the parts that talk about Trigon's servant, the one who leads the portal to her destiny." He began.

"Slade." Raven stated.

"Right. But something doesn't make sense. The prophecy then goes on to say that the servant will help Trigon bring about the end of the world, which didn't happen for Slade."

"We just assumed it was cause we kicked Slade's ass." Cyborg added.

"But I don't think that's what happened. See, read this part here." Robin indicated a short paragraph in the book.

"It alludes to the fact that this servant has been helping Trigon from the beginning." Raven said slowly.

"And we know Slade was only helping Trigon for a few months after he made the deal of doom with him." Cyborg said with a grin.

"So the prophecy could be referencing the man I've been seeing." Raven concluded.

"Exactly." Robin said.

"Uh, guys." Beast Boy interrupted, pointing up at the giant screen that was once again showing a map of the city, a single red dot flashing around the middle. "Looks like we've got even more trouble."

The Titans arrived at the large factory building located on the outskirts of the city and looked around suspiciously. There were no signs of any criminal activity or any activity at all for that matter.

"Something's not right." Robin stated. "Let's spread out and search the area."

But they had barely moved before one of the loading dock doors in front of them began to open.

"How the hell did you snot munchers find our place!?" Gizmo yelled angrily.

He, Mammoth, and Jinx stood in the doorway of their apartment. Raven met Jinx's gaze and saw the fear cross her face. Her panicked voice filled Raven's mind.

'You're trying to expose to my friends that I've been helping you!?'

'No! Of course not!' Raven replied telepathically.

'Then what are you doing here?'

'Something triggered our alarm in this area. But it couldn't have been you. There's somebody else here.'

Gizmo's screaming made it difficult for Raven to focus on her silent conversation with Jinx.

"We haven't done shit so just run on home before we kick your self-righteous asses!"

"Hey, shut your trap punk! We didn't come here for you!" Cyborg yelled back.

"Then who did you—"

"Me."

Mammoth was cut off by the materialization of a man in blood red robes surrounded by a swirling mist of red energy.

"Titans, go!" Robin ordered.

The man merely chuckled before sending a wave of energy at the team, sending them hurtling into the street. Raven recovered first and flew towards the man, hell bent on hurting him in every way she could.

"Azarath Metrion Zynthos!" She cried, eyes glowing white and a surge of magic shooting from her outstretched hands.

Her magic collided with the robed man with an audible crack like thunder. He was thrown onto his back but jumped quickly to his feet with an angry growl. Raven deflected his next strike before sending shards of broken concrete at him.

Dodging them with inhuman speed, he was suddenly in front of Raven and reaching for her throat. Raven ducked his hands and swept his legs out from under him with a swift kick. He countered by rolling away from her next kick and sending a bolt of red lightening into her back.

"Raven!"

She heard Jinx's cry as she fell to the pavement, a burning pain in her spine. She was then yanked backward by her robes when suddenly a flash of pink caused their enemy to release Raven and stumble backward.

"Jinx, no!" Raven yelled.

She spun around in time to see Jinx being lifted into the air by tendrils of red. And suddenly, Raven understood that the man wasn't there for her.

"Well, this makes things easier." He flashed Raven a wicked grin.

Raven watched Jinx's eyes widen in fear and pain.

"R-Raven…" She choked out, the tendrils wrapping around her throat.

"No! Stop! Take me, I'm the one you want!" Raven yelled, shaking with anger.

He merely laughed that awful high pitched laugh.

"So self-centered. I have what I came here for. Now say goodbye."

"NO!'

Raven's magic shot towards the man but she watched in horror as he and Jinx disappeared before she could reach them.

'Jinx!' Raven cried out to the other girl in her mind but was met with complete silence, unable to sense the slightest hint of the sorceress' aura.
