"Hey, Fred-O," Spencer said, letting himself into Freddie and Sam's shared apartment carrying a small box in his arms. "I've got it!"
"Sweet, bring it in here!" Freddie called from the kitchen. "And hurry!"
"Here's the cake I promised you and Sam," Spencer said, setting the box down on the kitchen counter and opening it up to reveal a beautifully decorated chocolate cake; complete with frosting roses and chocolate shavings. "See, I told you I'd pay you back for letting me finish up my sculptures here while my living room aired out from the stink bombs I accidently set off. This is a top-notch German chocolate cake; people sell kidneys to try and get this stuff."
"Well how'd you get it then?" Freddie frowned.
"Oh, T-Bo's Aunt owns a bakery," Spencer explained. "I even made sure it had the coconut flakes in there like Sam likes. Where is Sam, by the way? I figured she'd have pounced on this cake by now."
"She's not home, which is why I wanted you to come over now," Freddie said. "I sort of have a surprise planned for Sam. See, the other day we were walking by this jewelry store. Now normally Sam scoffs at most of the stuff in the display window, but this time she actually seemed to really like this one necklace. She said it looked like the one her grandma had when she was younger, but that one got lost when her grandma got arrested for trying to ride a flamingo and the prison confiscated it."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thin, gold chain with a small, heart-shaped locket on the end. "So…yesterday I went back to the store and picked it up. And since you were brining this cake over today, I figured it would be a cool idea to-"
"-Hide the necklace in the cake," Spencer finished. "Nice!"
"Thanks," Freddie grinned. "I've always wanted to pull this move. I can't wait to see Sam's face when she goes to take a bite of cake and finds this necklace instead. Now, I've just got to carefully get the necklace into this cake without making it look too obvious. Any ideas?"
"Hmmm…" Spencer said. "Well, maybe you can make a small incision at the top, and then cover it back up with one of those frosting flowers."
"Yeah, that could work," Freddie nodded, taking a knife from the drawer. "Let's see…I've got to be super careful. One wrong move and this is all ruined."
"Man…I can see why surgeons are so stressed all the time," Spencer commented.
Freddie took a deep breath and slowly made a small slice in the top of the cake, dropped in the necklace and then swiftly topped the hole up with one of the flowers.
"There!" he said proudly. "You can't tell anything has been touched! Sam is going to be so surprised, Spence!"
"Well just don't keep raising the romance bar," Spencer said. "Some of us chumps won't even have a chance to compete. So when's this whole thing gonna go down?"
"Tonight," Freddie said. "The cake's gonna be our desert."
"Cool," Spencer said. "Well, good luck with-"
But just then the apartment door opened up and Sam and Carly walked in.
"Oh sweet, is that the fancy cake you promised us?" Sam asked as the girls stepped into the kitchen.
"Oh, um, y-yeah," Spencer nodded lamely as Freddie quickly closed the box up.
"Yes, and it's for desert tonight," Freddie said firmly, putting the box in the fridge and turning to give his girlfriend a quick peck. "Which means no sneaking any tastes now."
"Relax, I can wait," Sam said, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, Sam does have self-control," Carly nodded. "When we were just at the mall, she only took three frozen yogurt samples at the food court."
"Impressive," Freddie smiled, giving Sam another quick kiss. "Anyway, I'm gonna go pick us up dinner. You cool with Chinese?"
"Always," Sam replied.
"Cool," Freddie said. "I'll be back in a little bit then. Wanna come with, Spencer? They just opened up a comic book store by the restaurant that we should check out."
"Yeah, let's go," Spencer nodded.
"Later guys," Freddie said as him and Spencer headed for the door.
The second the door closed behind them, Sam bolted to the fridge and pulled the cake out.
"Um, did you not hear Freddie?" Carly frowned. "That cake's supposed to be for dessert. You can't just eat it all now! Freddie would flip!"
"I'm not eating it," Sam said.
"Well then what are you doing?"
"Being a super romantic girlfriend for once," Sam grinned.
"How?" Carly asked.
"Well, the other day Fredbag and I were at the Pear Store looking around and he saw those new Pear Watches they have out," Sam said. "And he fell in love with them."
"Of course," Carly chuckled. "But what's that got to do with you being romantic?"
"Well before I met up with you at the mall, I swung by the Pear Store and picked up one for the nub," Sam said, reaching into her purse and pulling out the watch. "See?"
"Oh, fancy," Carly nodded, examining it. "Really high tech. He'll love it."
"I know," Sam grinned. "I was gonna just give it to him when I got home, but then Spencer texted us that he was bringing this cake over, so I got to thinking…I should take a page out of Fredork's book and pull that cheesy stunt where you hide something inside the cake."
"Ah," Carly grinned. "That's really sweet."
"Thanks," Sam said. "I figure with all the things he does I could put in a little effort every once in awhile."
"Well do you know how to get the watch in the cake without making it too obvious?" Carly asked.
"Er…I thought I did," Sam said, looking down at the cake. "But I think it's gonna be harder than I figured. Maybe if I cut like a slit or something on the top and move one of these roses to cover it…"
"It might be easier to try it on the side," Carly suggested just as Sam was about to make the cut. "It would probably be less noticeable. Then you can just sprinkle some of those chocolate shavings over it."
"Hey, that's not a bad idea!" Sam said thoughtfully. "Nice work, Carls!"
She carefully sliced a small slit in the cake and gently wedged the watch inside and covered it up with the icing and shavings. "There! You can't tell I did a thing. Freddie's going to be so surprised! He'll cut into the cake and bam! I'm gonna go down in girlfriend history! And the nub's gonna spend the next week just trying to even up the romance score; it's gonna be sweet!"
"You two keep a romance score?" Carly said, raising an eyebrow.
"What did you think that chart on the fridge was for?" Sam asked.
"You two never cease to amaze me," Carly chuckled, shaking her head. "Well…good luck tonight. You'll have to tell me how it all goes."
"Sure thing," Sam nodded. "Man…I can't wait to see the look on his face."
…
"These eggrolls were delicious," Freddie said later that evening as he cleared the plates from the kitchen table. "We'll have to keep a menu from this place so we can order from them again."
"Yeah definitely," Sam nodded, popping a fortune cookie in her mouth. "Alright, now that dinner's officially done…time to break out that cake!"
"Okay, okay," Freddie laughed, setting down two small plates. "Go get it from the fridge and then you can slice it."
"Or," Sam said, bringing down the desert and setting it down. "You can cut the cake."
"Um…well," Freddie said slowly. "That-That's true. But I think it'd be best if you cut it."
"Well I think it's best if you cut it," Sam smiled sweetly, handing him the knife. "Go on, baby."
"Er… o-okay," Freddie said, taking the knife. Maybe if he cut it just right, Sam wouldn't catch sight of the necklace until after she took her first bite. He made to make the first slice.
"Wait!" Sam said quickly. "Don't-Don't cut it from there. Cut it from that side right there."
"Why does it matter where I cut it from?" Freddie asked. If he cut it from the angle Sam wanted him to, the necklace would be revealed before it was even on Sam's plate and the surprise would be ruined.
"Just-Just cut it from there, will you?" Sam snapped. "Come on, I'm hungry!"
"Well then let me cut it the way I want and you'll get your cake faster!"
"No! The way you want to cut it is stupid!" Sam retorted.
"How is there a stupid way to cut a cake?" Freddie argued.
"I don't know, but you managed to find it!"
"Can you please just let me cut this cake that you forced me to cut instead of you?"
"I would," Sam said. "If you could cut it right."
"Sam," Freddie said, taking a deep, calming breath. "There is no right or wrong way to cut a cake. So unless you would like to cut the cake yourself like I wanted, then please just-"
He was cut off as a blob of icing hit him square in the face.
He slowly wiped the frosting off himself and glared at his girlfriend. "You threw cake at me?"
"No, just the icing," Sam smirked.
"Yeah, well," Freddie said, setting down the knife and grabbing a handful of the cake. He flung the dessert across the table, hitting Sam directly on her cheek. "That was cake and icing."
"Fredgut!" Sam yelled, smearing the cake off her face. "You are so dead!"
She reached down and grabbed some more of the cake and raced over and smashed it right in his hair. "Good thing your mom taught you how to 'double poo' because you're gonna need to if you wanna get all that out of your hair!"
"Oh yeah?" Freddie grinned, grabbing more of the cake in his hand. He put his hand around her waist and smeared the cake all throughout her long, blonde hair. "Well maybe I can show you my technique tonight, baby, because you're gonna need it too!"
"You're asking for it," Sam said, though a smile was etched on her face as she reached for the cake.
"Not as much as you are," Freddie chuckled, reaching for the cake at the same time.
As their hands went to grab more cake, though, they found something other than the desert enclosed in their grips.
"Huh?" Sam frowned, looking through the cake in her hand and pulling out a chocolate-covered, but still beautiful, necklace. "What-What's this doing in here?"
"What's this doing in here?" Freddie asked, dusting cake crumbs off of the Pear watch he had just discovered.
"Hey," Sam said, taking a closer look at the necklace. "Is-Is this the necklace I liked in the jewelry store window the other day? Freddie…did-did you put this in here?"
"I-Yeah," Freddie nodded, still a bit shocked at his own surprise. "Yeah, I-I did. I wanted to surprise you. But…I'm confused. What's this thing doing in-Hey! Hey, this isn't just some thing; it's a Pear watch! Holy chiz! Sam, wait, did-you didn't-"
"I hid that watch in there to surprise you," Sam told him. She looked down at her necklace. "Baby…this-this is so sweet of you. Thank you."
"Well thank you, Sam, this was great of you too," Freddie smiled, fastening his new watch on.
"So…" Sam said. "We really both tried to pull the lame 'present in the cake' routine at the same time, huh?"
"Seems like something we'd do," Freddie laughed. He glanced back at the cake. "Of course that super fancy cake is destroyed now…"
"Hey, just because it's all mushed up and smeared over us doesn't mean it's messed up," Sam said. She leaned up and kissed Freddie's cheek right where a giant glob of icing was. "See? Still delicious."
"Hmmm," Freddie smirked, leaning down to kiss the chunk of cake right by Sam's mouth. "Yup…you're right. In fact, it might taste even better this way."
