Vending
"Alright, so I think we should divide up what we stuff in the lockers," Sam said as her and Freddie sat hunched over a blueprint of Ridgeway. "You know, we fill some with shaving cream, some with maple syrup, some with tarter sauce…"
"Nice, nice," Freddie said approvingly. "Mix it up a little bit, I like it. It was kind of predictable last year when the seniors just put bubble gum in all our lockers. I also think we're missing a big opportunity here with the vending machine in the junior hallway…"
"Think we should rig it to shock people?"
"Baby," Freddie sighed. "What did we say at the beginning of this prank week?"
"No pranks that could leave anybody permanently scarred," Sam recited, rolling her eyes. "Fine. What do you think we should do?"
"Well, I could rearrange some wires and make it so that none of the buttons deliver their correct function anymore," Freddie grinned. "Someone presses a button for a bag of chips, they get gum. Someone tries for candy bar, they get pretzels. Someone tries for a Fat Cake, they get those weird dried apple slices."
"Oh my God! That's the evilest, most brilliant prank I've ever heard of!" Sam gasped. "Dude, you're a genius!"
"Well…I try," Freddie smirked modestly.
"Hey," Gibby spoke up from the sofa in Carly's bedroom, where him and Carly were sitting idly. "How come we don't get to help plan for Prank Week? We're seniors too."
"They say we're not 'prank savvy'," Carly told him, rolling her eyes.
"Well you're idea of a prank is just throwing a fish in someone's locker," Sam pointed out.
"So? You guys are planning on putting stuff in people's lockers too!" Carly defended.
"Stuff that will annoy people," Freddie said. "Not stuff that will give them free dinner."
"That was a tasty trout," Gibby smiled nostalgically.
"But Gibby's right, we're seniors too," Carly said. "Prank Week belongs just as much to us as it does to all you two. So come on, let us help!"
Sam and Freddie exchanged glances.
"Alright," Sam sighed. "Tonight when we sneak into the school to set all this up…you guys can come and be lookout."
"Lookout?" Gibby frowned.
"That's totally a pity task!" Carly snapped.
"No, it's super important, actually," Freddie said. "Last year when Sam and I snuck into the school to prank the seniors for everything they were doing to us, we did get caught by Franklin."
"Whoa, you did?" Carly said. "I never knew that."
"Yup," Freddie nodded, putting his arm around Sam. "And my beautiful girlfriend here stepped up and bravely took the fall herself."
"Well…I knew Franklin would go easy on me," Sam shrugged.
"Still…it was really sweet of you."
"Sweet enough for you to buy me bacon-flavored ice cream later?"
"Always."
"Alright, before you two start making out or something," Carly said, clearing her throat. "What time should Gib and I meet you at the school to be lookout?"
"Ten," Sam said. "By that time the last of the night janitors will have left and we should be in the clear."
"Alright," Gibby nodded. "That gives me just enough time to finish pressing my pants."
"Yes, we'd hate for you to have wrinkly pants," Freddie chuckled.
"This is gonna be so much fun!" Carly said excitedly. "I've never been a lookout before! Do I need to wear anything special?"
"I don't know, just wear black I guess," Sam shrugged.
"Oh! That works, I just got the cutest black tank top from the mall yesterday," Carly beamed.
"And they wonder why we won't let them help with the pranking," Sam whispered to her boyfriend. "We give them one job and they just sit there and worry about their wardrobes."
…..
"Alright, so Carly, you cover the north entrance," Sam said later that night as the four teens stood in the dark, empty school. "Gibwad-"
"It's Gibby," Gibby corrected.
"You're standing in an empty school with no teachers around to protect you," Sam snapped. "You really want to be correcting me right now?"
"Just deal with Gibwad," Freddie sighed. "Trust me, it's easiest."
"Gibwad you cover the South entrance." Sam continued. "If either of you guys see anything suspicious or see anybody coming, text us so we can get away."
"Okay," Carly nodded. "Hey, are you sure we can't help out with the-"
"No!" Sam and Freddie said at once.
"Fine," Carly mumbled.
"Come on," Freddie said to Sam. "Let's get these pranks set up and get out of here."
The two hurried off towards the junior hallway.
"Ah!" Sam smiled, taking a deep breath. "Smell that, Fredgut? That's the smell of a fresh pranking canvas. Alright, hand me the wrench and I'll get to work on the water fountain. You tackle the vending machine. Oh, but before you do-"
"Want me to get you some Fat Cakes?" Freddie grinned knowingly.
"You're the best," Sam smiled back.
She stepped over to the water fountain and began loosening the tap so that it would spray everywhere the next time somebody would try to drink from it.
"It's crazy…just last year we were so upset about the seniors pranking us," Freddie said as he worked. "And now, a year later, here we are doing the exact same thing."
"It's a tradition," Sam shrugged. "These kids will get their turn next year."
"That's true," Freddie agreed.
"Besides," Sam said. "A year ago the two of us were still just going at each other's throats. And now we're a couple. Things change."
"Yeah," Freddie smiled, watching her. "They do."
The two worked in silence for a few moments.
"Hey…Sam?" Freddie finally spoke. "Can I ask you something?"
"What?"
"Why'd you do it?"
"Do what?" Sam frowned. "I've done a lot of things."
"Last year when we were here," Freddie said. "Why'd you take the fall? I mean, like you said, we weren't a couple back then."
"I told you, you had more to loose than me," Sam shrugged as she moved onto the lockers, prying the first one open with a crowbar. "You had that scholarship, you were lined up for even more awards. What was Franklin going to do to me? Take away my Most-Detentions-Accumulated achievement?"
"He could've suspended you," Freddie said softly. "And ruined any chance you had at going to college."
"Nah, I knew Franklin would never do any of that."
"There's no way to no that for sure," Freddie said. "Being caught vandalizing school property after school is kind of a serious offense."
Sam shrugged. "Well…I guess you take risks for people you care about," she said softly.
Freddie stood up from the vending machine and stepped over to her, wrapping his arms around her. "I love you," he whispered.
Just then the two heard footsteps racing a few hallways away, and a second later, Carly turned the corner, panting for breath.
"Someone's coming!" she exclaimed.
"What?" Sam frowned. "Who?"
"Some teacher, I think!" Carly said. "He was mumbling about forgetting his laptop here."
"Well where is he now?" Freddie asked.
"I-I don't know," Carly said. "I ran here to tell you guys like a good lookout!"
"We said text us!" Sam hissed. "Now we lost our eyes on this guy!"
"Oh," Carly said lamely.
"Well come on, we were almost finished with everything anyway!" Freddie whispered as he quickly gathered everything up and stuffed it in his duffle bag. "Just go find Gibby and the two of you get out. Sam and I will finish getting everything out of here."
"Alright," Carly nodded as she hurried off.
"What teacher comes back to school at ten-thirty at night?" Sam asked as she hurried to close up the final locker that she had just filled with grape jelly.
"I don't know, but we've got to get out of here," Freddie said. "If we get spotted here we're so-"
He stopped talking, though, as they suddenly heard heavy footsteps coming towards them.
"Quick!" Freddie whispered, carefully opening up the classroom door closest to him. "In here!"
Sam ran inside and Freddie closed the door behind him.
"Hopefully Carly and Gibby made it out," Sam said softly. "Alright, let's listen for his footsteps to pass and then-"
But then they heard the footsteps stop right outside the door and the sound of keys being pulled out.
Sam and Freddie exchanged horrified looks.
"Hide!" Sam hissed, ducking under the teacher's desk.
Freddie bolted to the back of the classroom and hid behind a large storage cabinet just as the classroom door opened and the teacher walked in.
"Can't believe I left my computer again," he mumbled angrily. "When are these dang memory pills going to start kicking in? I paid forty bucks for them! Last time I buy anything from a guy on a unicycle. Now where is it…ah there!"
He spotted his computer sitting on his desk and started over to retrieve it.
As Freddie watched from his hiding space, he realized that if the teacher went much further, he'd be sure to see Sam, and she'd be caught! He couldn't let that happen! She had a lot more to lose this year than she had last time. They both did. They were only one week from graduation; any screw-ups now could cost them their diplomas!
Freddie slowly reached for his duffle bag and unzipped it. He knew what he had to do.
Just as the teacher was about to reach for his computer, Freddie let out a loud cough, startling the man.
"Huh? Who's there?" he demanded. "Show yourself!"
He quickly started back to where Freddie was. "If this is some other punk kid breaking in here for this dang prank week, you can bet you're sorry butt will be thrown out of this school before you can ever graduate from-"
But just as he reached the spot where Freddie was, Freddie raised a can of shaving cream and sprayed it right in the teacher's face, causing him to stumbled into the desks behind him.
"What the-" the teacher sputtered, trying to wipe the substance from his face.
"Run!" Freddie yelled, racing towards the door.
Sam jumped up from underneath the desk and followed Freddie out at top speed.
The two didn't stop running until they were safely out of the school and hidden behind a nearby bush.
"Holy chiz!" Sam breathed, gasping for air. "That-That was-Dude! What did you do?"
"He was about to bust you," Freddie said simply.
"Yeah, but do you realize what you just did?" Sam grinned. "You could've gotten totally busted yourself. You sprayed a teacher in the face with shaving cream! I haven't even done anything like that."
"Well he didn't have a chance to get a good look at me before I sprayed him, so I think we're in the clear," Freddie said.
"Still, do you know how risky that was?" Sam asked. "If you had gotten caught, you could've lost your diploma, all your scholarships, you MIT admission-"
"Well," Freddie said. "Sometimes you take risks for people you care about."
Sam smiled as she leaned up and kissed him. "Thanks," she whispered.
"There you guys are!"
Sam and Freddie turned around to see Carly and Gibby rushing over.
"Did you guys get out okay?" Carly asked anxiously.
"Yeah, thanks to Freddie," Sam said proudly, putting her arm around her boyfriend.
"What about the pranks?" Gibby asked.
"We set them all up," Freddie said. "Tomorrow when the juniors come to school, they won't know what hit them."
