"I'm really liking this playlist you came up with, Sam," Carly said as she looked on her best friend's computer. "You've got plenty of fun, upbeat songs, some slow, romantic ones, a few wedding classics…"
"See, I told you I could make the playlist on my own," Sam smirked, taking her computer back.
"Well you took six weeks to make up the menu for your reception, I had a right to be concerned!" Carly defended. "Anyway, I'll get this playlist to the D.J. tomorrow. Oh, and he's going to need to know the name of the song you and Freddie want for your first dance."
"Er…about that," Sam said. "I don't think we're gonna be doing that."
"What?" Carly frowned.
"Yeah, I think we'll just skip the first dance thing," Sam nodded.
"Um…okay," Carly said, clearly trying to remain calm. "Can I ask why you're making such a terrible decision?"
"Dude, it's a dance, it's not like I'm getting rid of the rings!" Sam said, rolling her eyes. "It's a stupid dance."
"It's your first dance as husband and wife!" Carly exclaimed. "It's the most important part of your wedding!"
"Carly…"
"Okay, it's not the most important part, but it's definitely in the top-five," Carly said. "I don't get it, why wouldn't you want to have your first dance with Freddie? You love to dance!"
"I know I do," Sam said. "But…look, Freddie isn't exactly the best dancer, okay? In fact...he's literally the worst dance I've ever seen. When we danced at Spencer's wedding he was constantly bumping into people and tripping over his feet. He was really embarrassed. He's always hated dancing. I blame it on his mom trying to shove him into so many mother-son ballroom classes when he was younger. Now normally I'd love a situation where I could humiliate him, but I figured this is his wedding so…I don't want him to be uncomfortable. I want him to actually enjoy the day, and I thought if I got rid of the dance, he could do that."
"Well…when you put it like that, skipping your first dance is kind of sweet," Carly said. "But have you even talked this over with Freddie? I'm sure he doesn't want you to give up your first dance."
"Why wouldn't he?" Sam shrugged. "I'm sure he's been dreading it. But no, I haven't told him I'm getting rid of it, yet."
"You haven't? Why not?"
"Well like I said, I'm sure he's been dreading it," Sam said. "So I thought I'd surprise him with this."
"Surprise him?" Carly frowned.
"Yeah, he's going to be all nervous about the dance, but then at the reception, once he finds out that he's not going to have to dance, he'll be super relieved," Sam nodded. "It will be my little wedding gift to him."
"But what about you?" Carly said. "You do like dancing. You'd actually give this up?"
"Well, it's for Freddie," Sam said simply. "So…yeah, I'm willing to give it up."
"Um, well, okay then, I guess if you really don't want to have your special husband-wife dance, I'll tell the D.J," Carly said, getting to her feet. "But, um, out of curiosity, did you have a song in mind for the dance? You know, before you decided to cut it out?"
"Er, yeah, I did," Sam admitted. She pulled up the playlist again and showed it to Carly. "This one…it was the song that Freddie had on out on the fire escape when we had our first kiss."
"Wow…you remember the song he had playing?" Carly said. "That was years ago!"
"I know," Sam said, her cheeks flushed crimson. "It just always stuck in my head after that. I thought since it was playing during our first kiss it could be playing during our first dance. But whatever, it's fine. It's still on the playlist so we'll still get to hear it at our wedding. We just won't dance."
Carly gave her a small smile. "Hey, I'll see you tomorrow, okay? At your dress fitting?"
"Ugh, another one?" Sam moaned.
"Your last dress fitting," Carly grinned.
"Thank God," Sam sighed.
"Bye," Carly chuckled.
As she stepped out of Sam and Freddie's apartment, she quickly pulled out her Pearphone and pressed it to her ear.
"Freddie?" she said, grinning. "Freddie, you'll never believe what Sam just told me…"
….
"This is so crazy, isn't it?" Sam said a few weeks later as she beamed at her new husband. "We're married now, baby!"
"I know," Freddie grinned back. "We're officially husband and wife."
The two were sitting at their table at the reception hall, finishing off the last of their dinners. But for once in her life, the food in front of her wasn't the main thing on Sam's mind.
"This is the best day of my life," Sam said as Freddie squeezed her hand. "I mean I figured it would be a pretty good day and all, weddings usually are nice and all, but I wasn't expecting it to be this great."
She craned her neck to kiss Freddie.
"So, you feel any different?" Freddie asked. "You know, now that you're Mrs. Benson?"
"God…I'm too happy right now to even gag that I have the same name as your mom, now," Sam chuckled.
She looked around at the hall. Towards the front, she saw the DJ was beginning to set up. Now that everybody was finishing up their meals, the dance floor would soon be flooded. She supposed it would be nice to dance with Freddie, but the day had already been perfect enough for her.
"Hey," Carly said, joining the couple at their table. "I'm happy to announce that I just successfully defused what was about to be a very bad situation between Sam's cousin Skipper and Freddie's grandmother."
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"Oh, just a little incident with a saltshaker," Carly said. "Don't worry about it. Hey, I think the D.J. is finally done setting up. We can finally have some music!"
"Nice," Sam said as the D.J. picked up his microphone.
"Alright everybody, hope you all are having a good time tonight!" the D.J. said loudly. "And I hope you all are ready to dance the night away to help celebrate the marriage of the new Mr. and Mrs. Benson!"
There were cheers from the guests and Sam and Freddie shared a quick kissed.
"Now, it is finally time for the moment we've all been waiting for," the D.J. continued. "It's time for Mr. and Mrs. Benson to share their first dance as husband and wife!"
There were more cheers. Sam quickly turned to Carly, slightly panicked.
"Carly!" she whispered. "I thought you told the D.J. we weren't doing a first dance! I told you-"
"I told the D.J. to add our first dance back in," Freddie said, getting to his feet.
"You?" Sam said. "But-But how did you even know that I took it out? It was supposed to be a surprise! Carly, did you…"
"Um, I'm going to go check on the wedding cake," Carly said, quickly jumping up and hurrying away.
"Come on," Freddie smiled, extending a hand to his new bride. "Let's have our first dance."
Sam took his hand and he led her out onto the dance floor.
"Let me guess," Sam said. "Carly told you about my plan to skip this whole first dance thing, right?"
"She did mention it, yeah," Freddie nodded.
"I'm gonna kill her," Sam said, shaking her head. "Look, baby, we don't have to do this. I was going to skip the dance because I know you hate dancing, especially in front of other people. You said it embarrasses you, and, well, I didn't want you to have to deal with that on your wedding day."
"Well, as incredibly sweet as that is, I wouldn't want you to have to give up something I know you were looking forward to because of me," Freddie said. He put his arms on Sam's waist. "I want to dance with you, Sam. As husband and wife."
Just then the song that Sam had told Carly she had wanted to use for this dance started blasting from the stereo.
"I like your song choice, by the way," Freddie said. "I feel like I'm fourteen again, sitting on my fire escape…"
Sam smiled. "Yeah, well…thought it was fitting."
When the couple began to dance, Sam braced herself for the worst. But after a few seconds, Sam suddenly realized something.
"Hey, you-you're dancing!" she said, looking up at her husband. "You're actually dancing! You're doing really good!"
"Well thanks," Freddie chuckled.
"But-But how?" Sam asked. "No offense baby, but you're, um-"
"I'm a real sucky dancer?" Freddie finished knowingly.
"Um, yeah," Sam nodded.
"Well, a few months ago, I decided that I wanted this dance to be special," Freddie said. "So I started taking dance lessons a few times a week at the community center."
"Seriously?" Sam said.
"Seriously," Freddie nodded. "Carly helped me arrange it. That's why she told me about your little plan; she knew I wouldn't want to miss getting to show you my new skills."
"Baby…that was-that was-I can't believe you did that," Sam said as Freddie skillfully spun her around.
"I'd do anything for you, Sam," Freddie said. "You are my wife, after all."
