Chapter 10

She could smell the sea salt in the air, the dew melding onto her skin. Her heartbeat sounded like a drum in her ears. She grew weak and she grew out of breath. But she did not care. This moment was one that she would cherish. One that she would keep with her for the rest of her days.

Her first kiss.

Paul's hands still cupped her face tenderly, but his kiss was anything but. The rough wood of the boardwalk pillars burrowed into her back with the force in which he was pushing into her. It seemed like he could not get enough of her. Nina raised her hands from where they were resting on his chest and grasped handfuls of his golden locks so she could pull him closer.

He made her happy.

He made her feel safe. And above all he made her feel like she was the only girl in the world.

Standing up on her tippy toes, she leaned into him further and moaned her approval. His taste was beyond compare. She though ice cream was good. It had nothing on him. Paul had just become her favorite desert. At the sound of her bliss, Paul stiffened under her hands and let one hand trail from her face to her hair, running his hands through it gently.

Nina wanted him closer. She wanted this to last forever. But alas we do not always get what we want. Her vision was beginning to blur and her lungs were on fire. She really and truly needed to breathe.

Breaking away from Paul, she whispered against his lips, barely a whisper, "Do you realize how good you taste?"

Now under normal circumstances, she may have understood that this was not the right thing to say to him at the point in time. But when did she ever listen to that common sense part of her brain.

Oh right. Never.

His eyes had darkened beyond their beautiful baby blues into that of a midnight sky. The look he was giving her was carnal and underneath her palms, she could feel the rumbling occurring in his chest. But instead of being terrified, Nina's breaths started coming out in breathy pants and she leaned closer into Paul. He was so warm… so inviting.

Knowing that she had him hook, line, and sinker, Nina leaned forward and ran her nose up the column of his throat, stopping to nibble at his Adam's apple. Her words were but a purr as she murmured, "I never want to leave your arms."

Pressing her body even closer to his, Nina seemed to notice his not so tiny problem and she smiled a quiet little smile. She affected him as much as he affected her. This just served to boost her confidence even more.

I have never felt this way before. He makes me feel warm… alive. I feel like I can start living my life. But only if he is by my side.

I don't think I can live without him now.

Paul's POV

Was she trying to kill me? That was the only thought running rampant in his head as he released her and turned his back to the only woman that had managed to affect him like this in all his years. Paul had never witnessed the mating bond; he had only heard stories over the years. He had ignored them and continued to party away his eternity. Never in a million years did he think that he would find her.

His mate.

His darling Nina. She was fragile yet so strong. She had a will of steel and a heart of gold. Paul would never be able to fully understand why the fates paired her with a burn out like him but he is not one to complain when a blessing is thrown in his lap. That present being a curvaceous blonde with eyes that threatened to make his knees weak. Their kiss had shook him to his core and nearly collapsed all his control. He could not get close enough to her. He was practically devouring her. And then she just had to say that he tasted good. That is the one thing that you do not say to a male. Let alone a vampire. Now all he could think of was how good she would taste. If only he was just thinking about her blood.

Paul knew that on some level she was already feeling the bond. His undead heart was still warm from when she said that she never wanted to leave his arms. But that little bit of sweetness was not going to help the problem in his pants.

He could hear her heartbeat as though it was a siren's call. He could hear the sand shifting underneath her shoes as she walked closer to him. Paul remained with his back to her, fearing his control. When she was just a breath away from him, Paul straightened his back and held his breath. But nothing prepared him for her wrapping her two petite arms around his waist and nuzzling her face into his back.

"I am sorry if I made you angry. Please don't leave."

Her voice was a broken rasp and Paul nearly broke at her words. How could she think that he would leave her. He was bound to her, although he was not complaining by any means. Did she take my turning away as a rejection to what she said? As a rejection to her…

Paul spun around and swallowed the gasp that came out of her mouth as he smashed his lips to her. Breaking away swiftly, Paul proclaimed, "Do not ever think that I would leave you okay. I could never leave my best girl. And I was not angry with you baby. I promise."

Nina nuzzled into his palm and closed her eyes, her expression peaceful. Her body relaxed in his arms and she leaned into him. Paul smiled and embraced her, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close. They stood there for a moment, swaying in the breeze to an unknown song, listening to ocean waves in the distance. For one moment all was okay and everything was right in the world.

In the next, Nina let out a little giggle. When Paul looked down to see what she was doing, she quickly pushed away from him and began to run towards the midnight mass of dark ocean water that grazed the sand of the beach. Her shoes were quickly thrown off and left behind her. Next was her beloved jacket. Paul watched hypnotized as she stripped down to nothing but her underwear and dived into the waves, disappearing within the moving mass. His undead heart nearly stopped when she did not immediately resurface.

When she did pop back up, she did so with a brilliant smile on her face, the white of her ivory teeth glowing against the dark backdrop. Her voice playful, she said with a beguiling smile, " Care to join me for a night swim?"

Paul's smile was slow yet absolutely predatory. He took his time walking toward her. With every step he dropped another piece of clothing. A shoe there. His mesh tank that way. And then finally came the final piece.

His jeans.

With an eager smile, he popped the button and drew down the zipper at an extremely slow pace, enjoying the feel of her eyes on him. He had noticed that her eyes had gone dark, signaling to him that she was close to her breaking point already. Shucking away the pants, he dove into the warm Santa Carla waters and headed toward his girl. Grasping her waist in his hands, he hoisted her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. Her arms encircled his neck and pulled him closer. Paul closed his eyes and tried to fight off the rumble that wanted to come from his chest. He took deep breaths trying to calm himself down. Here he was half naked with his equally naked eternal mate. Add in the fact that they were in a public place and that equals a disaster when it comes to Paul's chances of ignoring his urges. He never was one to ignore what he wanted. But this was different. She was different. She was a Queen in his eyes and she deserved nothing but the best.

Looking up and seeing that her eyes were closed and she had a peaceful smile on her face, Paul leaned down and ran his nose up the column of her graceful neck. Her skin was like flawless porcelain in the moonlight and he was stunned at her beauty. This was his destiny. This was his forever.

His lips pulled back over his teeth and he could not help but nibble on the fair skin at the base of her throat where her shoulder and throat met. Nina let out a breathy moan and reached up to grasp his face in her hands. She pulled his face up and made him look at her. He saw determination in her eyes and something else that he could not name.

Leaning down, she claimed his lips in a raw kiss of passion, pulling on his bottom lip with her teeth as she pulled back. Her lips were still grazing his, distracting him, as she said a near whisper, "I know what you are."
