Chapter 6: The Power of the Press

News spread of the situation at the Dursley's. Many families that lived in Privet Drive were confused when they found police cars surrounding their neighbor's home, wondering what was going on and why their neighbors' front yard looked like a murder scene.

They were shocked when they heard what had actually happened.

The people they thought they knew so well turned out to be monsters. Many of them had no idea of the abuse, terrified that they lived next to a child abuser for several years.

They never knew that 'the delinquent' Harry Potter was being hurt all this time. Some even cried when they heard the truth about the boy.

Pretty soon, everyone in Little Whinging heard about what happened. They all gave their hearts out to the poor child that was forced to live a awful life. All because they automatically accepted the Dursley's words when they told them Harry Potter was a troublemaker.

The news reached out to all of Surrey, and several British Provinces around. The news of abuse that went on for several years, as well as the mysterious reasons for it happening caught everyone's attention.

Let it be said that the Muggle reaction to this was no where near as bad as the Wizarding World's. Especially when a certain blonde haired witch reporter was tipped off about the story before anyone else.

By a Muggleborn lawyer at that.

Sunday, October 19, 1986

It was an pleasant morning in the old castle of Hogwarts. Students sat in the Dining Hall, talking amongst themselves about Quidditch, OWLs, classes, and other random gossip.

Professor McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress and Transfiguration teacher, sat at her seat, surveying the Hall with focus and patience.

"Minerva, you shouldn't fret so much. The students are behaving fine." Professor Pamona Sprout placated. "You should relax and finish your breakfast and tea before it goes cold."

"*sigh* I know Pamona, it's just with Albus gone, the responsibility of being in charge of all the students falls unto me." Minerva said.

"I'm going to have to agree with Pamona. You don't need to strain yourself over everything Minerva. You already work hard enough as it is." The diminutive charms professor, Filius Flitwick, said to his coworker.

"I know, but there has been more house rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin lately." Severus Snape, resident potions professor, snorted at that comment.

"Only because your Gryffindors are rowdy and incompetent. Should they control their tempers and minds, there would be no rivalries." McGonahall didn't appreciate Severus's attitude. Flitwick saw it and decided to break the impending fight before it started.

"Look! The morning news it here!" He yelled as he pointed his small hand up at the high open window. It seemed to work, as both professors did not continue with their banter.

Dozens of owls flowed into the Hall, dropping stacks of new information in front of students and faculty alike before flying back out the window.

Before anyone could even open them, a third year Gryffindor yelled out in surprise at the front cover and title.

Everyone tore into the stacks of paper, finding themselves desperate to find out what is so interesting. They were all in for quite a shock, especially the teachers.

HARRY POTTER ABUSED?!

By Rita Skeeter

My fellow wizards and witches, a terrible act has been committed towards a young wizard. A child that helped us in our time of need against the Dark Lord know as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I'm telling you of course about the savior to the Wizarding world, the boy-who-lived, Harry Potter.

Except, unlike the stories written about him living in a castle or fighting monsters, this report of his life after the Dark Lord's death is true.

With Harry Potter's defeat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, the Boy-who-lived was left orphaned due to the death of his parents.

So where did he go? Does nobody know? My readers, the answer lies with a wizard we all know. The same wizard that defeat Grindelwald and runs Hogwarts as its headmaster. Albus Dumbledore.

After the victory over He-Who-Must-Be-Named, many wanted to thank our savior, but were stopped by said wizard. Albus Dumbledore claimed that Harry needed to grow up away from influences of the Wizarding World. He stated that Harry was safe and was living with those who would care for him until he reached Hogwarts at age eleven.

How wrong he was.

This past Friday, muggle authorities saved Harry Potter from his relatives' home. Apparently his life was in danger to the point that they needed to save him as soon as possible.

But why would they need go save him if he was safe in this home? The truth is that we were all lied to, and he never was.

Harry Potter was abused and beaten by his muggle Uncle and Aunt, as well as his cousin in this little home. Evidence supports the conclusions that Harry was beaten since he was brought into the home, which was over four years ago, and forced to be a literal slave to his only 'so-called-family'. Living off of nothing and being subjugated to a torturous life. (For more information, page 4)

This marks a dark day in our History as a society. If we can't even protect one child, then what can we do to protect ourselves from the next Dark Lord should one come?

And what of Albus Dumbledore? He lied to us about the truth regarding our hero. He lied about making sure to check in on Mr Potter. (More information, page 5). He lied about how terrible Mr Potter's muggle relatives really were. Why should this man deserve to be headmaster of our school if he can't protect the one child he was charged with protecting as magical guardian?

Is there more that he is lying about? Is Albus Dumbledore dark in disguise? Should he have as much power as he is allowed to have? I will let all of you decide.

I leave you all with a final question: Should Albus Dumbledore be allowed to get away with all this?

The entire hall was filled with silence as everyone read the paper. Some were skeptical of the news while others wouldn't use the Daily Prophet to wipe their rears. They found it to stretch the truth too much to be actual news.

Regardless, no matter what house they were in, nobody condoned child abuse.

Many of the younger years were horrified at the document. They grew up with the story of Harry Potter being a hero that fought evil after beating He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Now, they could only imagine how awful the real Harry Potter must've had it.

If they hadn't done it before, some of the the older years were beginning to question what kind of person Albus Dumbledore really was. Groups of students were losing confidence about the fluorescent robe wearing wizard.

Especially a certain pair of red heads.

Bill and Charlie Weasley, fifth and third year Gryffindors respectively, found the information unbelievable. The Weasley family had always had strong ties with Dumbledore, so for him to do something like this to a child was monstrous.

They felt like they should yell out about how it wasn't true, couldn't be true. They had known Dumbledore for such a long time, even before they entered Hogwarts.

But no words came out. They couldn't find a reason to defend the old headmaster. Bill and Charlie looked to each other with shock..., but also understanding.

The two brothers were trying to connect the dots about their headmaster. Their level of trust in Dumbledore was dropping as time went on. Especially after what
they heard over this past summer...

—flashback—

July 13, Sunday

The Burrow

Bill was currently looking into an ancient runes book while Charlie was flipping through pages of a dragon book. Both of them agreed that their shared bedroom was the only quiet one, especially after Bill put up the silencing charm that he learned this past year. They loved their family, but sometimes having so much of it was too much.

Percy wasn't bad, but he was too young for them to want him in their room. The twins were starting to take up pranking, Ronald was very whiny, and Ginny got annoying about her 'Adventures of Harry Potter' books.

Sadly, the quiet didn't last long. Fred and George picked the lock to their room and burst in, cancelling the silencing charms.

"Hello dear-" Fred started.

"Brothers, we wanted-" George cut in.

"To tell you about-"

"What's going on-"

"Downstairs." The said together.

Bill sighed and looked at his younger brothers. "Why do you have to talk like that? There are two of you, please act like it." Bill found the split talking to give him a headache, having to follow both of them on a singular conversation.

"But that's-" Fred said.

"No fun." George finished with a devious smirk.

Charlie was kind of interested. The twins messed around, but they wouldn't usually bother Bill and him like this unless it was something important, or as they called it, 'juicy intel'. "What's going on downstairs?" He asked.

"Well," Fred began. "We were-"

"planning pranks-"

"when Dumbledore-"

"Showed up, then-"

"Mum kicked us out of-"

"The living room."

"As we walked out,-"

"We heard Dumbledore-"

"Mention Ginny." The said together at the end.

Bill and Charlie looked at each other decided to find out what was going on. Dumbledore was a friend of the family, but for him to show up unannounced, and mum kicking the twins out was strange.

The group of four traveled down to the living room/kitchen. They wanted to be quiet, as it was kind of late and their other three siblings were asleep.

When they reached downstairs, they hid behind the entrance way, knowing that they would be caught if they were seen.

But there was no sound, they couldn't hear anything. Charlie quickly peaked over and saw that his mum's and Dumbledore's mouths were moving, but their was only silence. He went behind the wall again and turned to his brother. "Bill, it's a silencing charm."

Bill nodded and pulled out his wand. Going very carefully, he began unwinding the magic behind the spell. He knew that Dumbledore was very strong, and that if he simply tore the spell down, then the Headmaster would notice instantly.

Luckily, he was top of his class and knew how to break spells down. It paid to be in Ancient Runes and Arithmancy. After a few moments he broke the last piece of the spell and sound was restored from the living room.

"...I'm sure that she will love this! I've often been reading her books about him!" Said Mrs Weasley excitedly.

"Yes, I have all the papers right here. This will ensure that nobody can refute the contract." Dumbledore said, but all the boys could sense a darker tone in his voice.

"What does he think about the contract?"

"Well, he does no know of it as of yet, but I'm sure that he'll be very happy about this arrangement."

"And if he doesn't?" Molly asked suspiciously.

"As his magical guardian, I will ensure that he will marry Ginny, even if he does not like it at first. But in all due time, he will." Dumbledore said cryptically.

"Alright then! This is absolutely fantastic! My daughter will marry into the most Ancient and Noble House of Potter! I'm sure that she and Harry were meant for each other."

"Well, I best be on my way. I need to make sure that Hogwarts is doing well, I also need to go to Gringotts today and pull out some money." Dumbledore stated.

"Alright. Thank you for coming Albus."

"No problem at all." He said jovially. They all heard a door open and close the next moment, then a boom of disapparation.

The four boys silently crawled back upstairs, making sure they were not heard by their mother, who started cooking up dinner. They all wondered what they just heard and what it could mean for the family.

Harry Potter was going to marry Ginny? Harry Potter?

The boy-who-lived and Ginny's crush since she read the first published book about him? He was going to be forced into a marriage by Dumbledore?

All Bill knew was that something strange was going on between his mum and the Headmaster. He wasn't sure that he was going to like it.

-flashback end-

-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-

Bill and Charlie Weasley may be young, but they were both very bright.

They could already determine that since Dumbledore was Harry's magical guardian, so he should know when Harry was being abused, if not then he should check in on his charge.

Dumbledore also signed a contract without Harry's consent. Dumbledore even said that Harry didn't know. Bill knew about the laws between guardians and their duties to those they are to protect. He had his own magical guardian after all. His Grandmother Prewett was his magical guardian, and she would take him should his mum and dad not be able to anymore.

While magical guardians can make decisions on their charge's behalf, to make a betrothal contract was usually not allowed unless both parents consented, and Harry had no parents.

As the brothers were thinking about all this, the teachers were having a much different reaction.

Sprout was looking over the paper with shock. She was not too easily swayed when it came to the news, but the evidence was clearly there. The attacks, the abuse, and the police investigation by the muggles. She usually didn't believe the Prophet because the evidence it had was always shaky, but this had everything. She silently hoped that this was a lie and that her headmaster had not truly done this.

She silently made a vow to herself right there, that she would make sure none of her Puffs or any students at Hogwarts would not have to go back to terrible homes at the end of school. She would make sure of it. Just in case.

Filius Flitwick looked at the report with great suspicion. While there was evidence of the abuse, he couldn't help but not trust the Daily Prophet. They would often use anything as evidence when it came to getting a good story. That, and using Harry Potter was an obvious stab for attention by said publishing company. But the article looked like it might actually lead somewhere.

He would have to look into this further.

Severus Snape simply threw it away. He didn't trust the Daily as far as he could throw a Thunderbird. The whole thing was hogwash. Though, he couldn't help but think of his promise to Dumbledore regarding the boy's protection. If the Daily Prophet brought this up out of nowhere, then perhaps there could be some truth to it. He should find out for himself and be done with it.

He dreaded that he would have to visit the-boy-who-lived-to-be-spoiled.

Minerva McGonahall read the report and thought of the conversation she had with Dumbledore before dropping Harry off with those muggles. They were, in fact, the worse muggles she had ever seen. But, Dumbledore told her that they were fine though.

Despite the confidence she had in Albus, she wanted to make sure Harry was alright. It wouldn't do to not know the truth regarding a future Hogwarts student. That and Harry should learn of his magical heritage soon if he didn't know yet. It wouldn't due for him to not come to Hogwarts without any introduction.

She decided to go over this upcoming week. She might have to do some digging on where he is, but she was sure she could find the truth and finally know how Harry has been doing these four plus years.

-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-

The Wizarding World was in chaos as soon as the papers hit.

There were plenty of people who dismissed it as another Prophet tall tale, but there was a majority who couldn't help but not read it as truth. It had all the evidence and real data about the boy-who-lived's real life.

People were cursing Dumbledore and feeling awful about their ignorance. Many of them had been saved by Harry Potter, and they never even thanked him for what he did. All because they believed the Headmaster of Hogwarts. Lets just say that when Albus gets back to Britain that he's in for a surprise.

The poor boy-who-lived was abused! A magical child was sacred and to have one be abused and used like a house elf was unbelievable to many.

That was not the only thing that happened. Families big and small began burning their Harry Potter books. Children and adults who followed books like 'The Adventures of Harry Potter' or 'The Potter Chronicles' were disgusted by the lies they had been reading. They were all horrified that people wrote stories about their hero in such an outstanding light, even though said hero was basically tortured this whole time. People attacked publishing companies for lying to them and making them believe that Harry Potter was out adventuring and having fun.

Everything was in pandemonium and a certain blonde haired reporter was watching it all, happy to know that the Headmaster would soon be getting his long overdue Karma.

'I should really thank dear old Daniel for the story. This report might just be the greatest thing that I've ever written. I can only imagine what will happen next.'

New York, United States, same time.

Albus Dumbledore was in the third day of the meeting at New York. He had just received support from Beauxbaton's and Durmstrang's Headmasters, as well as Wizarding Germany's Minister. Sadly, neither America's Minister or Ilvermorny's Headmaster want anything to do with him. They were a big reason he came to this Merlin awful meeting.

'It's not much, but after Harry defeats Voldemort, more will come flocking in.' he thought smugly as he listened to Mahoutokoro's (Japan's School) Headmaster talk about the increase in muggle technology and the need to have it mix with the Wizarding world.

Some of the Ministers and other Headmasters listened with understanding, but Albus didn't. To him, the Wizarding world was fine without technology. He won't need technology after he's in charge of everything.

With that in mind, he began to think about Harry Potter. His ticket to the top. 'Perhaps it would be best to visit the Dursleys. I'll give them the check for this month personally. I can look over dear young Harry then obliviate him after he hears and sees me. After all, I need to make sure he is ready for his destiny. It wouldn't do for him to hate me or know that I know about his home life.'

October 20, Monday

Juliet Mayfield walked to her classroom with sadness, knowing that Harry was still in the hospital and she couldn't see him until after work. She spent the past two days making sure that the poor boy was doing alright. She almost couldn't bring herself to come to work today. He had become such a big part of her life, and not seeing him this morning hurt her heart.

She turned around the corner of a building and saw not only her students at her classroom door, but plenty of other people too. After they saw her, she was met with dozens of parents and reporters, all scrambling for answers.

They all seemed very concerned about Harry.

That, or wanted the next big local scoop.

"How is Harry Potter doing?"

"How is the Potter boy?"

"Is that child doing alright?"

"Please tell Harry that my family is sorry for treating him so poorly. We had no idea!"

"Can you tell us anything on Harry Potter's whereabouts?"

"Tell Harry that he has the Piers family support."

"And the Richmonds"

"And the Baylors"

"And the Bensons"

She was overwhelmed and gestured for them to stop with the questioning or talking. After a moment, all the concerned parents stopped but the reporters didn't.

She wasn't having any of it.

"Let me remind all of you that this is a school, meant for learning. If you ask one more question about my student, then I will call the police." She said angrily. The reporters didn't like the sound of that and began shuffling away from the classroom one by one.

She then turned to the parents. "If any of you want to talk to me, please come in after school. I don't want to expose any children to what happened." She said softly. The parents understood and started walking off. Mayfield smiled. "But I will tell Harry that he has more people that care about him." She said with emotion, getting many of the parents to tear up or feel better, knowing that they could help out a child who needed it.

Miss Mayfield sighed sadly and turned to her classroom door and all of her tiny students that just witnessed the whole fiasco. Some of them seemed to want answers as well.

'It's going to be a long day. *sigh* I hope you're doing alright Harry. You have no idea how much you mean to me.'

October 20, Monday

Daniel Barton entered 'Wilson Law Firm and Attorneys' and walked past Mrs Hendrick. She didn't mind, as she knew that her boss wanted to speak to this man. Daniel entered the hallway and went down it to see the boss of this place. He walked to the end of it and saw the the front of Mrs Wilson's door. Walking in, he found himself face to face with the same cold woman he was introduced to weeks ago.

"Close the door." She said stoically. Daniel Barton found it scary and did as she asked. Not a second after closing it, she got down into business. "How did 'your world' react to what happened?" She asked with the same intense ice in her voice.

"Well..," He stated, getting a hold of himself. "From what I've heard, after it was released yesterday, everyone went nuts. People felt terrible about what happened to 'their savior' and demanded Dumbledore's head. He lost a lot of people's trust, but there are still plenty who don't believe what was written."

"Yes, good. From what you've told me, he relies on his power with the people. This will give us an edge up on him. If we can keep the pressure on him, then we can beat him at his own game." Wilson said.

"That's not all." Daniel continued. "Apparently there were books written about Harry's life and how he was an adventurer. Plenty of people rioted against the publishers and burned their books in protest against the lies they were fed."

"Well, we can always sue the publishers for false printing, printing about Mr Potter without permission, and lack of commission for every book they made money on. They must have made millions off of the lies they wrote. Anything else?" She asked, wanted more details.

"I heard there was a blow up at Hogwarts, the Wizarding School. Most of the school's populous can't help but not read it. Since the evidence in the article was pretty high, most of the skeptical students and teachers are looking into the case further."

"Good, that means that there is conflict with the faculty he works with as well." She finished.

There was a pause of silence. Daniel had nothing else to report to her and Wilson didn't speak, most likely waiting for more.

"Well..." Daniel rubbed the back of his head.

"I need a favor." Wilson stated coldly.

"Umm, what kind of favor?" Daniel asked curiously.

"Juliet Mayfield called me this morning before going to work." She said somewhat tenderly. "She said it was about Harry. She stated that she has grown quite fond of Harry, that the boy was a big part of her life now and that she couldn't help but care for him. She couldn't see him as only a student anymore. She loves Harry. She even stated that she started seeing Harry as a son now."

Daniel went wide eyed, starting to understand what she meant.

"Yes," Mayfield said, but with a little more warmth in her voice."Even if he is a wizard, Miss Mayfield wants to know if it's possible for her to adopt Harry Potter."

(End Chapter 6)
