Hey everyone! :) Just want to say that I was not expecting that many people to come in to read the new chapter that quickly, but I'm glad you like the story so far.
Also a big thanks to those who left a review. It's always encouraging when I see those :)
Anyways, enough of my ranting, here is Chapter 3 :D
Sly looked in despair at the shattered device, destroyed by the giant red scythe that came from the sky. He moved closer to observe the remains and decided that it was beyond repair. Sly would have to find a new way to get Bentley and Murray here with him. Maybe I could steal back the one 'he' took from me... but that'd be really risky alone.
Sly took a closer look at the big red scythe, it looked custom made, and well crafted. He observed the sniper rifle nested inside the weapon and wondered if the owner of the weapon would be someone he could trust. Sly had no choice, he had to find someone to help him. So he tried to remove the weapon from the ground to no avail. The scythe was too big to get out of the ground on his own. That's when Sly eyed a button near the handle of the weapon. Out of curiosity and hoping that it would help, he pressed the button.
The sudden movement of the weapon made Sly jump back. The scythe had just collapsed into a much smaller compact form. As it was now, Sly decided that he would carry it on his back. Even if it would impede his movements a little due to its weight, he knew he was better off not wasting precious time.
Sly strapped the compacted scythe onto his back and started to make his way towards the cliff wall that towered over him. He was certain that the only way out from here was up. On his way to the cliff wall everything was quiet. It was a strange feeling of peace considering what had happened in the last couple days.
A sound in the bushes brought Sly's attention, something in there was moving, and had been for the past couple minutes. He then noticed a pair of red eyes, staring at him. Sly froze, so many scenarios were going through his head. Had he found me already? But how did he get here so fast?
Suddenly a dark wolf-like creature lunged out at him and tried to slash him in half. Luckily Sly had been prepared. He had used his cane to push the attack right by him. Sly then ran straight for the nearest tree and started climbing up. What the hell is that thing? Sly stayed up in the tree where the wolf creature couldn't reach him. He had to think of a way to get out if this and fast, before more of the dark creatures arrived. It was a stretch, but Sly had an idea. He unslung the compacted scythe from his back and observed the weapon. Sly eyed a barrel, trigger, magazine. The weapon was also a firearm Sly realized. Pressing a small latch the weapon extended itself to a compact form that seemed optimized for shooting. Sly aimed at the wolf and pulled the trigger.
What Sly had expected was a loud bang followed by a wolf missing a head, but the weapon only gave Sly an unsatisfying 'click'. The magazine is empty! I don't have any bullets on me either…
That's when Sly remembered the prototype sleep darts Bentley had made for himself. They were designed to be used in any type of sniper rifle, so to induce sleep onto guards from much farther distances than his crossbow. Sly rummaged through his bag to see if Bentley had left some in there from their last field test.
"Jackpot!" Sly said. The backpack had a handful of them that were unused. After a bit of fiddling, Sly was able to remove the magazine from weapon and loaded the prototype sleep bullets into the magazine.
After reloading the magazine into the weapon and charging the bolt, he took aim at what was now a group of three shadowy wolves at the base of the tree. He opened fire at the group of dark animals. All of them flinched from the impacts of the prototype bullets but didn't show their pain, if they felt any.
Then slowly, one by one, the wolves dropped to the ground, fast asleep. He silently got down from the tree, the compacted scythe once again slung on his back. As Sly looked at the sleeping wolves he chuckled. Sly then started walking towards the cliff wall, with high hopes that it could be a wall that he could climb.
He reaches the wall and begins inspecting the surface of it. "Just as I thought, I can't climb this. Not enough hold to grab onto, not to mention the added weight from this freak weapon. There's got to be a way out of this forest." Sly started walking with the cliff wall to his left. "I just have to keep going..."
Bentley and Murray looked at where Sly was going to splatter all over the ground, nothing there but his torn para glider. "He used the device to get away from him, it was fast thinking but it wasn't the smartest idea..." Bentley said as he looked over the remains of the material.
"What do you mean Bentley?" Murray asked from the driver seat of the van.
"We don't know where in the other world he's gone to. He could be anywhere. I made the device so that it purposely not transport you six feet under ground, so if that's where it's about to send you it adjusts. But by doing so it also places you farther than where you would've been transported to in the first place. In other words because of how fast Sly was going when he transported, the device most likely used this feature, meaning he could be anywhere in the other world." Bentley said with a sad tone.
"Oh... So how do we get him back?" Murray said hopefully.
"We need to wait, Sly needs to open the portal from his side. Until then all we can do is wait..." Bentley said. Bentley wheeled over towards Murray and used the robotic arms in his wheelchair to get in to the passenger seat of the team van.
As Bentley was strapping himself in Murray looked to Bentley with a worried look. "What if Sly's portal thing gets broken or smashed?"
Bentley shifted in his seat, "Then he'd have to steal the last remaining device..." Bentley's voice had wavered slightly.
"That shouldn't be a problem for Sly, he's like a master thief. Who's the chump with the device?" He says with a chuckle.
Bentley's words stuttered a bit, "He.. he.. He'd have to steal it from Clockwerk..." Bentley's fear could be heard in his voice, ever since that incident that crushed Bentley's legs, Clockwerk was a source of fear for him.
Sly had been walking for a good while now, he ended up in an area with some ruins, and found a point where the giant stone cliff wall was pointing inwards. A long stone bridge and other platforms were all around the area.
"half an hour and I still haven't found a way out, this sucks!" Sly walked over to the bridge and looked down at the edge. He observed the massive abyss below him and shuddered. "No way I'll try to climb out here, if I fall I'm done for..." Maybe there's someone around here that could help me.
Sly started wandering off towards the forest, but stopped when he heard the pitter-patter of footsteps behind him. Sly turned around, his cane in hand at the ready. As he scanned the area with his eyes he saw nothing in the near vicinity or in the far horizon. Turning back around he started walking again. The footsteps were back again.
Sly turned around fast, ready for any kind of surprise attack. Nothing there... Sly eyed a few rose petals at his feet. "What the?..." Sly heard the steps behind him but much faster now. He tried to turn in time but was too late as a small girl in a red skirt and a red cape tackled Sly to the ground.
"Gotcha!" Ruby exclaimed victoriously as she had Sly pinned to the ground.
I know this chapter is shorter than the previous ones, I'm trying to keep my chapters to a minimum of 2000 words so this one will be the only one that is short as this.
What do you think of the story so far? Let me know by leaving a review, they always help and it's always appreciated :) I'll see you all soon in chapter 4, bye bye!
