Chapter 53
"So that's the offer I guess?" Slippy asked trying to confirm what he was being told. "Yeah, Bill told me he wants to go into the Cornerian military so he's out. Just wants to do his own thing, I'm fine with that, he said he loved the idea but wanted to be in the military. Plus he said it would make for a good connection if either of us need any extra contacts." Fox had just told Slippy about what his dad offered him.
"Falco said he's in for it." Slippy was enticed by the offer that was made, Fox had been trying to get everyone together to see if they were as enticed by James offer as Fox was. "When do we have to know?"
"It's no rush, I just didn't want to spring it on anyone with little time to decide. You can make the decision any time you want." "That's great, thanks Fox". Fox nodded as he hung up his phone call with the frog.
'Only a few more days until school starts back.' It was January 11th, a new year had come and it was already hot on the move.
"Hey, I think Slippy's in. He didn't say yes, but he sounds really enticed. "All right!" The bird yelled a little louder than Fox thought he would. "Can you imagine what this is gonna be like when this thing takes off? It'll be like a dream come true." Fox nodded to the bird's aspirations. "Yeah, it really will be. Sure does seem like a dream just thinking about it. It's really hard to fall asleep thinking about it so I just try to avoid thinking about it."
After relaying the information and discussing their plan, Fox hung up the phone one more time. "Hey guys, I'm gonna go try these out. Thanks again for them." Fox walked out the door of his house with a brand new pair of hover skates in his hand. They were all new and his parents thought Fox would like them since he has a hover board as well. 'So I just click the heels together to start them up? Is this the Wizard of Oz?' Fox said as he laughed a little.
He fired them up and had a hard time keeping his balance at first, wobbling as they started. 'Whoa, these things are powerful, incredible how close I am to ground the still. Slippy would love to tinker with these things.' Fox remembered just how much of an engineer Slippy was. It was helpful too, something happened with Fox's car a few days prior that he couldn't figure out himself. He sent it over to Slippy's house for him to take a look at, he knew it would be in good hands. 'Might as well go over there. He might even have it fixed already.' Fox did a few laps around his block in the neighborhood to get used to the skates and headed off towards his friend's house.
Sure enough as he rolled up on Slippy's house, he could hear both his dad and Slippy working on the car in their garage. He knocked on the garage and told them who it was, shortly after that the side door to the garage was unlocked.
"Hey guys, how's it going today?" His friend looked up and wipe some grease off his face. "It's no big deal, we can probably fix it here shortly if you wanna sit around and wait a bit." Fox laughed a little, "I meant how is your day going, not the car. I know that it's dead for good if you guys can't fix it." "Ha! That's for certain. Don't worry about it, a belt just came loose on it is all. We have a spare so I'll put it on and your ride will be ready to go." "Great, thanks Slip. Knew I could count on your for this. Can't believe I couldn't find something that basic on my own."
Slippy laughed a little at his friend's mechanical attempt. "Yeah this one was tucked a little bit behind everything, really hard to get to it without taking a few parts out." The vulpine took a look under the hood to see what he had missed and what all his friend had to take out.
The frog pushed Fox aside just a bit to put the new belt back on and it was ready to go. "Now we just have to put a few parts back on and it'll be all fixed." "Thanks Slip." The frog just smiled as he began putting the pieces back under the hood. A while later, Fox thanked his friend for the help and made his way home in his newly repaired car.
The next day Fox had a rendezvous with Bill concerning the offer. "I'm totally sure dude. I just wanna do things my own way." Fox held up his hands defensively, "Yeah, sorry. I just wanted to totally make sure you were certain. I respect your choice, and the benefits you're making sure to remind us of. Thanks Bill." "It's okay dude, I just wanna make sure that we're on the same page and everything. Wanna do what I can to help you guys and the city out."
He extended his hand for a fist bump to his old friend. "Besides, I'm sure you can find one more. It won't be hard since you've got yourself a little network." "Yeah, maybe. At least I have some time until it all comes together. See you later Bill." Fox waved goodbye to his friend as he left the canine's house.
He hopped into his convertible and turned on the heat. 'I'm glad he's picking his own direction, even if it leave me hanging for a bit.' He drove through the city looking at all the people on the streets clothed in their winter attire. 'I had a few backup candidates in mind, but I really didn't wanna have to think about calling them up. Guess I'll just have to make do, it really is a good thing that I have time. The three of us would be fine, but having a fourth would be way better.' Fox scratched his head as he wracked his brain about his situation.
He made his way home to his dad to ask for his advice. "I'm sure you three would be successful, but a fourth would make things much better for you, you're certainly right about that. It's all about finding the ones that you know you can trust. Don't think too hard on it, take it easy. You still have plenty of time to find your last person. I just want to tell you how proud I am of you that you're making this decision."
James put a hand on Fox's shoulder and smiled at him. "I'm glad you're giving this opportunity to me. Thanks again, dad."
