Cassie could see Trish before she even made it down the stairs. She was sat on the sofa, brushing her hair out of her face with her hands. She had been speaking softly to Vergil – who was leaning against the bookcase opposite the sofa. When they heard her and Dante coming down Trish was the only one who looked over at them. She smiled at Cassie and gestured for her to sit beside her. Sometimes she forgot Trish was a demon. She had picked up so many human mannerisms that it was easy to think she was a human being.
"Please tell me you told him you didn't feel like pizza either." She said as Cassie took her seat.
"I did but I don't think it did much good." She replied, propping her elbow up on the back of the sofa and leaning onto her hand.
"Hey, pizza is delicious. And I nearly always let you both pick the toppings." Dante said in defense. The two girls laughed at this, Trish shook her head and folded her legs before parting her lips to speak. "Oh really? Once in a while is actually 'nearly always' is it?"
"We need a bit of variety. I told you several times I can cook for you. Just get the ingredients." Cassie added.
"Okay, that can be your new contribution. You'll be in charge of cooking the meals. But for tonight…" He trailed off, heading over to the desk and rummaged through the menus from all the takeaways and restaurants that came in with the mail. "We got chinese, indian, Japanese….." He trailed off again, trying to find one that would suit everyone.
"New contribution?" Vergil said in a surprised tone.
"Yeah, she wants more responsibilities." Dante said. He had gathered up all the menus and was walking back over towards the rest of them.
"I see." Vergil said, the corner of his mouth curled into a slight smile and he let out a single laugh.
"What?" Dante asked, unsure as to what was going on. He looked from Vergil to Cassie. "Did you say something to her?"
Vergil stared over to Cassie. His usual cold, stern expression replaced with a more menacing one. "No, not at all." He lied. Cassie wanted to look away from him but his facial expression was somewhat terrifying. Not only was he lying but also he looked creepy doing it. She didn't know what his reason was but she was tired of him seeing her as a frightened little child. She would channel her inner Lady and not give him the satisfaction of seeing her was getting under her skin.
"O…kay. So what are we getting?" Dante held up a number of menus while looking at everyone in the room.
The ended up getting chinese for dinner. The dinner talk was limited; Dante and Trish were the ones who spoke the most. Cassie on the hand was busy trying to figure out what Vergil's deal was. He was quiet as well, nothing surprising there. The only time Cassie spoke was when Dante asked her to write a list of what she wanted him to pick up. She agreed to do it later that night, and asked what kind of dishes everyone would like.
When everyone was done Cassie offered the clean up. That way she could check what was in the kitchen or rather what wasn't. She piled up all the plates and cutlery and headed to the kitchen. She felt good about finally having something to do around the shop that was more than cleaning.
Once she was done washing the dishes she checked the presses and fridge to see if there was anything there worth making a meal from. It was no shock to her that the presses were full of what she referred to as 'student food'. Packets of ramen, cereals, and the odd tin of something that she was too scary to check.
Once she was done checking the presses she went to the fridge. Usually they only ever had milk and beers in there. It would be good to have some decent food for once, she thought.
"I didn't know my opinion mattered to you."
She knew it was Vergil straightaway. Although he had snuck up on her, she somehow managed to stop herself from jumping in shook.
"Excuse me?" She said coolly, closing the fridge door gently while turning to him. There it was again, that menacing look. An expression that said to her he took joy in other people's misery.
"I always knew humans were easily influenced but you really do amuse me." He replied, stepping closer to her. She wanted to run away. That or slap him again but she knew he would probably stop her this time. He was trying to intimidate her that she was certain of. Instead she decided to stand up for herself.
"You don't know anything about me."
"I'm sure I'll know everything in time. Like, why Dante is so determined to protect you." He stepped even closer again, he had an aura to him she didn't like. She felt suffocated the closer he was to her. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes for a moment before responding.
"Why don't you just ask Dante," She opened her eyes to look at him, his eyes as icy as always, only this time she didn't look away, "but just so you know, he wont even tell me the real reason."
And with that she stepped past him, finally feeling victorious for standing up to him. That is until he grabbed her wrist tightly and spun her back around to face him.
"What are you doing?!" She gasped as he pulled her closer to him. His other hand grabbed her free wrist, pinning her in place so she couldn't pull away from him, despite how hard she tried to break free from his hold. She was about to call for Dante but when he pulled her body to his she was lost for words. She didn't know what he was doing. His face was only a few centimeters from hers. His eyes moved from her eyes to her face and back to her eyes again.
"I stand corrected. There is something different about you. I just don't know what." He said before letting her go. She stumbled back but managed to catch herself before falling down completely.
She stared at him for a few seconds before rushing out of the room and heading up the stairs. When Dante and Trish asked if she wanted to watch TV she made up an excuse, said she was tired and what to get an early start.
When she made it to her room she closed the door, locking it behind her and pressed up against it. Her heart was racing, her body trembling. Why did he grab her like that and what reason did he have. Was it just part of his intimidation game? Or should she really be worried about his presence?
"Who does he think he is.." She mumbled under her breath, trying to shake off the feeling. She walked towards her bed, climbing under the sheets and pulling them up around her tightly. She hoped Dante would kick him out soon.
