Spawns of the Trickster: An MST - Alternate Endings
By: Kelly M. Mules
Disclaimer: I do not own Slayers or any concepts mentioned in this story. This is my recognition that the original tale had many things wrong with it and gives me an excuse to explore other options. There is a slight reference to The Last Unicorn and an awesome 80's song. I do not own either of them, but I bet my husband will get the references.
Amelia's version:
"Aw man, I was sure that would work!" Gourry exclaimed in disappointment.
"Jellyfish Brain." Lina muttered.
"Still, the ending seemed a bit rushed." Zelgadiss analyzed.
"Yes, there were a lot of unaddressed elements and technically she killed her husband again." Pokota pointed out.
"Are you certain that poor man is safe with the author?" Amelia questioned.
"He is quite safe, I assure you. The only time he has to worry is PMDD week." Arcanum replied, leaving the others confused again.
"At least we seem to be more accurate in these versions, despite how awful their endings are. Can the author write a happy ending?" Filia commented.
"Agreed. They are more accurate, but as far as a happy ending goes, that depends on your definition. I quite enjoyed both endings." Xelloss said with his usual smile.
The others didn't bother responding in words. They just sent him a look that screamed, "you would."
"I believe it is time for Amelia-san to take her turn. If we were going by character first appearances, it would be Zelgadiss-san, but the author has determined the order in advance." Arcanum began.
"Why?" Gourry asked a valid question.
"The author would reply 'for complicated reasons like cause.'" Arcanum responded and received a glare from most of the Slayers cast.
"Well, it's my turn and I agree with Filia-san! What this story needs is a happy ending!" Amelia shouted cheerfully, causing Xelloss to cringe.
"Amelia, technically there are no happy endings because nothing ends." Zelgadiss observed.
"We'll see about that! I'm ready Arcanum-san, to bring justice and love to this story!" Amelia said and bounced up to the front of the theatre to greet the dark creature. Xelloss sat down, dizzy, and held his head.
The Lair of the Lord of Nightmares
"Ah yes, it is time for Amelia-san's turn. What change would the princess of justice make?" L-Sama asked as Amelia and Arcanum arrived in her lair.
"I think Filia-san and Xelloss-san should fall in love so they'd raise the kids together - then we'd have a happy ending!"
Back in the theatre, both Xelloss and Filia immediately fell over and tried not to throw up.
"Is that even biologically possible?"Arcanum asked L-Sama who shrugged in response.
"I suppose. I never really thought about it, honestly. It is an interesting premise though. Let us try it." L-Sama agreed so Arcanum began her chant.
"I call upon the power of the Lord of Time and Space
Grant us permission to travel from here to another place.
Love will empower those of both darkness and light
But will a happy ending for our tale be within sight."
Amelia, excited about her idea, was completely unaware and unprepared for when and where she would end up in the story to make her changes. She certainly wasn't prepared to face an angry and confused Xellass Metallium in the heart of Wolf Pack Island.
"Who are you and how the hell did you get here?" Xellass demanded, dark powers surrounding her and the entire area around them.
Amelia was about to answer when a weak voice was heard behind them.
"I can answer one of your questions, Ju-ou-sama. That is Amelia-san, the human princess who goes on tirades about love and justice. As to how she got here, that I do not know."
Amelia recognized Xelloss' voice and looked around Xellass to see the Trickster Priest lying on a bed, looking pale as if he was sick.
"Xelloss-san, what's the matter? You look sick." Amelia's voice dripped with concern as she ran around the Greater Beast to her friend's side.
"Amelia-san, my Master does not like to be ignored." Xelloss warned.
"Oh right, yes I am Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune. Sorry to barge in like this but I am trying to change the future and apparently, this is where I'm supposed to do something. So why does Xelloss-san look so sick?" Amelia tried to explain, with a short, respectful bow.
"He's not sick. He's infected and you will tell me more information now." Xellass demanded, shaking her head at the future changing piece.
"Infected how?" Amelia asked.
"Mazoku are creatures of darkness. We do not have capability of love and all those life-enhancing emotions. Now suddenly, my dark general and priest can not only feel these emotions but they're slowly killing him. Now you tell me what could be causing this or I will kill you where you stand!" Xellass emphasized.
"Could it be because of Filia-san?" Amelia thought aloud.
"I recognize that name from his stories. She's the golden dragon priestess who hides a mace under her skirt and spaz zes out over stupid things, correct?" Xellass asked.
Back in the theatre
"I do not spaz out over stupid things!" Filia screamed, swinging her mace around in the air.
"Yes you do and apparently, you're contagious, too. Ew, lizard cooties!" Xelloss teased.
"Shut up Namagomi!" Filia yelled back.
Back to the story
After some more conversing, Xellass and Amelia determined that because Xelloss and Filia had sexual relations, he could now feel love but his astral body being pure Mazoku was rejecting it.
"But this isn't the way I wanted the story to go! Maybe if we get Filia-san and the kids here, then Xelloss-san will feel better and they can all live happily ever after." Amelia proclaimed.
"Will you shut ...kids? There are offspring of their union?" Xellass questioned.
"There should be..." Amelia started before she was immediately transported back to the theatre, leaving an even more confused dark lord in her wake.
Back in the theatre
"Amelia-san, why would I want to live happily ever after with the Namagomi?" Filia asked through gritted teeth.
"You said you wanted a happy ending, Filia-san!" Amelia defended.
"I think she meant for the kids, Amelia." Lina translated as Filia was too furious to speak.
"Well, Filia-san, we can have a contest. Whoever throws up last gets to tell their story next." Xelloss suggested.
"But what if mine is the happy ending?" Amelia asked.
"I doubt it." Xelloss and Filia said simultaneously.
Back to the story - The Delivery Room
As Amelia held Baby Fal and Gourry made goofy faces to make the baby giggle, Lina and Zelgadiss carefully examined the baby girl who was still unnamed at this point.
"Zel, look at her, the vase ..." Lina said, trailing off but Zelgadiss followed her train of thought and nodded.
"Then we'd best hope Gourry's assessment was wrong or these two are doomed to face each other in battle." He added.
"Talk of battle and doom? It seems like an appropriate time to make my entrance." A smooth, but strong female voice spoke.
As the Slayers' crew held the babies close, they surrounded Filia's bed as she lay sleeping and prepared to fight.
"Show yourself, Mazoku!" Lina called out at a lower tone as to not wake Filia.
"How disrespectful! I do have a name, Lina Inverse, and now you shall know it." The voice continued.
Xellass then appeared in her human form from the Astral Plane. The humans in the room look in awe and fear at the tall woman before them. She appeared having long, light purple hair with silver highlights and dressed in black armor from headband to boots. A sword was at her hilt but she had yet to draw it.
"It has been a long time, Lina Inverse. We only met briefly before and I don't care to remember which human form I took then so allow me a proper introduction to you all. I am Greater Beast Xellass Metallium. I have come for the spawns of the trickster. Hmm... that sounds like a story title. Cool." The Mazoku Lord said, bemused.
"You won't get them without a fight!" Gourry said firmly, drawing his sword.
The wolf lord laughed heartily and allowed the humans to feel a small portion of her true power. They tried to suppress the urge to shudder.
"Those creatures are a threat to the balance of the world. They should be destroyed." Xellass said plainly.
"They could be raised to be heroes of justice and then they'll be good guys!" Amelia yelled, fist pumped in the air for emphasis. Xellass' eye twitched.
"How did Xelloss travel with you without strangling you to death?" Xellass asked insultingly.
Despite Amelia ranting about how unjust the question was, Xellass continued, "Even if they became 'good guys,' the light would be too strong and throw off the world balance anyway."
"That would cause trouble for Mazoku then." Zelgadiss concluded and Xellass nodded.
"So you intend to destroy them?" Lina asked directly.
"Perhaps..." Xellass began but was interrupted by Xelloss appearing from the Astral Plane behind her and quickly bowing.
"Ju-ou-sama, please do not destroy my children!" He begged.
Xellass turned him in fury as the humans in the room could only witness the interchange between Mazoku master and servant in shock.
"I gave you strict orders not to leave the island! You think because you're a father now you can disobey me? I will not stand for it Xelloss! If I choose to destroy these hybrids then I will and not one of the creatures in this room can stop me! So someone give me one good reason why I should let them live!" Xellass yelled.
The room was quiet for a moment and a small "coo" was heard. It came from the unnamed little girl that Lina was presently holding. Lina looked down at the baby and was surprised to find the child had her amethyst eyes open wide, smiling and reaching out to Xellass. Before Lina could react, Xellass swiped the baby from her and held it up. She looked at the child, touched its violet hair and looked deep into its eyes, such a perfect replica of those of her servant. She smiled a gentle smile that surprised everyone in the room.
"That will do then. What is the name of this child?" Xellass asked as she handed the baby back to Lina.
"She doesn't have a name yet." Lina answered.
"Tell the dragon girl her name is Xeria. That is the price of my protection. Come Xelloss, we must discuss the terms of your punishment. Also, you should thank these humans. They were willing to die for your offspring." Xellass said in a firm tone before vanishing to the Astral Plane once again.
"So that's the Greater Beast?" Zelgadiss asked. Xelloss nodded.
"She's really hot!" Gourry exclaimed and was promptly beaten over the head by a slipper in Lina's free hand.
Both babies giggled at the violence around them which made Xelloss smile.
"As my Master stated, I am grateful to you all for protecting my children. Thank you." Xelloss said seriously and bowed respectfully. All four were a bit taken aback by this gesture but Lina recovered quickly.
"We'll discuss the terms of your repayment later Xelloss." She said with a wink.
Xelloss glanced down at both children briefly before replying.
"Lina-san, don't ever change." He said with a smile and departed to face his punishment.
A short, quiet moment later, Lina spoke.
"Okay, is anyone else totally lost now?"
"Their behavior was quite bizarre considering what we know of Xelloss and Mazoku in general. It must be an act." Zelgadiss commented bluntly.
"Yeah, they didn't even say, 'it's a secret.'" Gourry added. Lina bopped him off the head with the slipper again and the hybrid babies giggled in delight.
"Do you think it's over?" Amelia asked.
"Highly doubtful and we know we have to tread carefully with Xelloss. With his master involved, too, we'll have to be extra careful now." Lina concluded and the others nodded in agreement.
Wolf Pack Island
"Did I perform appropriately, Ju-ou-sama?" Xelloss asked as he re-emerged from the Astral Plane.
"That smile I had to give is putting a bad taste in my mouth. Get me a glass of Zefilia wine, Xelloss." She responded.
Xellass sat on her stone throne and took the wine goblet from her servant before continuing.
"Yes, you were perfect. Now we wait and see what your little dragon girl does."
"Master, if I may be so bold, what do you plan to do with Filia-chan and our children?" Xelloss asked, fear evident in his voice. Xellass laughed.
"Ah, Xelloss, don't you know by now? It's a secret." She replied, using his infamous pose. Xelloss face-faulted and Xellass laughed heartily.
The Next Day
Filia left the hospital in a huff with her human friends following closely behind while carrying her hybrid twins. She felt like a ball of mixed up emotions.
"Geez, Filia, carry your own kids!" Lina yelled, trying to run and carry Xeria simultaneously.
Filia was furious with her friends at the moment. When she awoke, her friends told her all about the visit from Xelloss and the Greater Beast. She felt exhausted, confused and strangely disappointed that she slept through the visit from Xelloss and his master. She couldn't identify why, however.
"How could you let the Namagomi see my children? And Xeria? Another 'X' name - how original!" She ranted in anger, while taking Fal from Amelia making Lina more angry. Zel gave her a break and held Xeria for a bit.
"Wait, don't Filia and Fal both start with 'F'?" Gourry asked.
Filia spun around too quickly that she became dizzy. Amelia helped her steady herself.
"Yes, Gourry, but Filia doesn't want any connection to Xelloss." Lina answered while covering her face with one hand.
She had hoped her answer would be sufficient explanation four Gourry but as usual, the swordsman had more questions.
"But Xeria looks just like Xelloss and he is their father, right?"
Filia dramatically collapsed to the ground, crying and held Fal tight to her. Zelgadiss sighed and shook his head before kneeling beside Filia.
"Filia, you haven't held Xeria yet so I can hold Fal for a bit if you'd like." He suggested.
The others held their breath.
'Dammit, typical Zel to push the issue.' Lina thought.
Filia stared at the purple-haired child with uncertainty. The child stared back at her as well.
'She looks exactly like him,' Filia thought to herself, but was torn on whether or not she hated that idea. She just felt so confused. Before either had a chance to move, a familiar voice was heard.
"Filia-ul-Copt, former priestess to Karyou-sama, present yourself."
Filia stood slowly, still holding Fal, and turned to face Milgazia and a small army of golden dragons in human form.
"I am Filia." She responded simply as Lina and the others were instantly by her side.
"I am Milgazia and I have been chosen to lead what is left of our race. Your human companions have met me before but I believe this is the first time we have had that honor." The golden dragon said respectfully with a slight bow.
Filia glanced toward Lina, who nodded, before returning her attention to Milgazia and she bowed respectfully as well.
"I imagine you have an idea as to why we appear before you now." He continued. Filia simply nodded, trying to hold her composure.
"Disgusting whore," one of the other dragons in human form muttered. Filia and her human friends all shot a look of fury at him.
"Sagalia-san, that was uncalled for. Filia is obviously a victim here. I'll come straight to the point, Filia-san. Despite any circumstances, we golden dragons are a dwindling race so this is not the time to be alienating our members. We want you to return to your post as High Priestess and come back to the clan." Milgazia said firmly as the dragon called Sagalia snorted in disgust.
"What's the catch?" Zelgadiss asked plainly as Xeria squirmed in his arms.
Milgazia sent a mild glare in his direction but Lina pushed the issue.
"Come on, Milgazia, level with us here!" She said, crossing her arms.
With a sigh of defeat, Milgazia continued, "there is more and judging from what I see, I imagine those babies are the results of the unholy union?" Filia nodded slightly.
"May I?" Milgazia asked as he approached and Filia nodded once more.
Milgazia stepped up to examine Fal. He was well-aware that Lina and the others were battle-ready if need be. Baby Fal looked up at Milgazia and smiled, his blue eyes bright with innocence.
"This child..."
"I have given him the name, Fal." Filia replied as she sensed Milgazia fishing for the child's name. The golden leader nodded and continued.
"Despite the shape of his eyes, he has no darkness in him. He will be welcomed into the clan with open arms of acceptance so fear not for him, Filia-san."
After his assessment, Filia let out the breath she didn't realize she held only to recapture it as Milgazia moved toward Zelgadiss who had held Baby Xeria all this time.
Zelgadiss held the child tighter in a very protective stance which surprised everyone there.
"I mean the child no harm but I need to assess if it will also fit into our clan." Milgazia said calmly as he paused in his approach.
"Unfortunately, I doubt it." Zelgadiss replied but allowed Milgazia to come close and see Xeria.
At first, Baby Xeria had her eyes closed as Milgazia examined her. He looked at her pensively, until she opened her amethyst eyes and he was able to recognize the potential for darkness in them.
"She has capacity for great evil, I'm afraid. However, if we could use some sealing magic on her, she may be able to function within our clan." Milgazia commented before continuing, "In fact, there is another hybrid child among us so your children would not be alone, Filia-san."
"What type of sealing magic and what effect would it have?" Lina asked as Filia seemed too excited about the idea.
Suddenly, a small infant broke ranks of the dragon army and ran right up to Zelgadiss.
"In fact, this is the child in question. His name is Marcus." Milgazia introduced.
The Slayers crew, minus Filia, crowded around and knelt down before the small hybrid child who sported light brown hair and ice blue eyes. He looked at them innocently but did not speak.
"There is powerful magic on this child." Amelia recognized. Lina and Zelgadiss nodded, also sensing that.
"Hey, little buddy, how old are you?" Gourry asked.
Marcus held up two fingers but still would not speak.
"Why doesn't this child speak?" Zelgadiss asked.
"Unfortunately, there are possible side effects from the sealing magic and in his case, he cannot speak. He has never spoken a word in his life." Milgazia explained.
"That's horrible! How could you do that to an innocent child?" Amelia yelled, pointing at Milgazia in her usual justice pose.
"The decision was not mine. As in this case, the decision would fall to Filia-san." He replied, glaring at the finger pointed in his direction.
Suddenly, a quiet, young voice spoke.
"Xeria."
Everyone was shocked to hear the boy, Marcus, not only speak, but know Xeria's name despite it not being spoken as of yet.
"Hey, how did he know Xeria's name?" Gourry asked, always astounding his friends by asking an appropriate question every once in a while.
"This child's name is Xeria?" Milgazia questioned.
Zelgadiss didn't answer him, but focused his attention on Marcus, who was simply stroking Xeria's hair.
"Marcus, how did you know her name?" He asked.
"I don't know. I just sort of knew." He answered.
"How could the brat speak?" Sagalia ranted.
"Perhaps, they are destined for each other, or something nauseatingly mushy like that." A voice the Slayers crew now recognized spoke before the Beastmaster teleported in from the Astral Plane.
The dragons all tensed in fear and the humans prepared to fight.
Xellass walked slowly and menacingly over to Zelgadiss and knelt down to see Xeria and Marcus.
"It seems your assessment of my 'granddaughter' was accurate. She does have amazing potential for evil. So much so that she was able to break some of the seal off this boy. And seeing what the botched sealing magic did to him, I cannot abide you doing that to her. So, if it is the choice of the parents, then I'll simply order Xelloss to say no." Xellass explained.
Filia held Baby Fal tightly as Xellass rose and approached her. Her golden eyes held a thrill of the hunt as she sought out her prey, hungry like a wolf.
"So this is the infamous Filia-chan that my servant played with, awake this time, too. Personally, I'm not impressed. Xelloss' tales are far more interesting than meeting you in person." Xellass judged rudely.
"I care not what your or that Namagomi's opinion is of me! I only wish to live in peace with my children." Filia said strongly, yet found herself curious as to what opinions he did have.
Xellass smirked, ripped Fal from Filia's arms, tossed him to Lina and picked up Filia by her neck. Filia struggled to breathe.
"I have decimated kingdoms for less disrespect than that. You will know your place, golden lizard!" The Mazoku Lord's power fanned out, blocking any rescue. She continued. "As of yet, I may need you for my plans, so for now, you may live." Then Filia was dropped to the ground roughly.
"What plan do you have in mind?" Lina asked.
"Oh really now, when will you all learn? That is a secret." Xellass responded in Xelloss' way, causing everyone to face fault. She enjoyed a good laugh at their expense.
"Marcus, come here! It's not safe!" A different golden dragon raced up and dragged Marcus away from Zelgadiss and Baby Xeria. She started to cry and a bubble of dark energy formulated around her, blasting everyone including Zelgadiss away. Even Xellass was pushed back a step.
"Very interesting indeed." She commented as she approached the floating, crying child. She held out her arms to it and the baby stopped crying and looked at her.
"No! Don't go to her, Xeria!" Filia called out and fought the dark power waves to stand before her daughter.
The baby opened her eyes wide and seemed to be carefully considering which woman to go to. Xellass smiled at her, reached for her and let Xeria feel her dark power. Filia stood there, unmoving. Xeria closed her eyes and floated down to Xellass.
"It seems the child has made her choice. Raise Fal well, Gold and keep an eye on the boy, Marcus. I may have use for them later." Xellass said with a smirk and returned to Wolf Pack Island.
"By the Gods, what have I done?" Filia exclaimed as she collapsed to the ground in tears.
Lina and the others were instantly by her side to comfort her.
"Don't worry Filia, we'll figure out a way to get Xeria back! Justice always wins!" Amelia quoted.
"No, Amelia-san, it is too late. Xeria is gone to me forever and it is my fault. I didn't hold her on numerous occasions and I didn't reach for her when she needed me the most! What kind of a mother am I?" Filia cried.
"A very good one, Boss!" A new voice called out.
The humans and dragons turned to see Jiras and Gravos, formerly lackeys to Valgaav and now employees of Filia's shop, walking forward carrying supplies and a small infant.
"Valteria always thinks so!" Gravos added as Jiras handed the small Ancient Dragon to Filia. She held her adopted son tightly and turned toward Milgazia.
"I have conditions if I am to return to my post and the clan." She stated firmly.
The dragon, named Sagalia, growled in outrage but Milgazia waved him down.
"I will hear your condition, Filia-san and hope we can reach an agreement." He responded.
"I will return provided that both my sons are accepted into the clan. That is my first condition!" She listed.
Her human companions were impressed by her strength now, despite her sadness before and hung back, in case they were needed.
"Ridiculous! The half-breed is enough, but now a dirty Ancient Dragon, too!" Sagalia ranted.
"Excuse me, Sir, I will not tolerate your disrespect any further! If you cannot keep him quiet, Milgazia-san, then these negotiations are over!" Filia said in a huff, losing a bit of her composure as her pink bow encrusted tail popped out of her skirt.
"I will handle the rest of the negotiations alone. The rest of you may retire to the temple." Milgazia ordered and the others left. Sagalia spit on the ground by Filia's feet and left as well.
"Geez, what is that guy's problem?" Lina wondered aloud.
"He is not a nice person!" Amelia agreed.
"Um, isn't he a dragon?" Gourry asked.
"That's what I meant!" Amelia whined.
"Milgazia, that dragon, Sagalia seemed to be very upset that Marcus could speak, why is that?" Zelgadiss asked.
"Oh yeah, I heard that, too! He called him a brat." Lina added.
"It is really not my place, but if it would shed some light onto his behavior, I suppose a short explanation is called for. Marcus is the child of Sagalia's mate, Faranth, but not of Sagalia himself." Milgazia explained with a sigh.
"So, let me guess, it was his decision to suffocate that kid with sealing magic." Lina speculated. Milgazia simply nodded.
"Which brings me to my second condition, no sealing magic is to be used on any child of mine, be they blood or not!" Filia continued.
"Those conditions are both easily met. Despite being a different type, Valteria, as you call him, is still a dragon and will be welcomed. It is always the choice of the parents in the use of sealing magic so your second condition is also acceptable. Anything else?" Milgazia responded.
"I want protection, for myself, my children and that boy, Marcus. I fear what the Greater Beast said about her plan and I feel not for our sake, but the sake of the world, we need to be protected. That is all of my conditions." Filia finished.
"Consider it done. As members of the clan, we protect each other and you three will join Marcus as members of our clan. Is this arrangement acceptable to you?" Milgazia finished.
Filia nodded. "Yes it is."
Thirteen Years Later - Dragon Shrine History Class
"Today class we shall continue our discussion about the Kouma War." Sagalia began, ignoring collective groans from the students. They had been continuing their "discussion" of the Kouma War for two weeks solid. The students learned quickly that when Sagalia said "discussion," he meant "listen to his lecture and do not speak."
"We have discussed most of the major Mazoku players in the war, but today we shall discuss one whom is most hated among our race. If you ever have the misfortune of meeting this particular Mazoku, expect to die a horrible, painful death. This Mazoku is responsible for the almost destroying an entire dragon clan on his own. His name is Xelloss and he is the lone servant of the Greater Beast Mazoku Lord who rules from the mysterious Wolf Pack Island."
"So Old Man, he wiped out a swarm of dragons all by himself?" Marcus, now fifteen and quite oppositional, asked in a disrespectful tone.
"Yes, you obnoxious brat! That is what I said!" Sagalia bellowed at Marcus.
"Mighty impressive of him! Woo!" Marcus cheered sarcastically and started slow-clapping to add to his point. His seatmate, Fal, now thirteen and significantly less oppositional, tried to nudge him to stop.
"I've had just about enough of your insolence! Now you die boy!" Sagalia yelled and prepared to blast Marcus.
Marcus looked at him wide-eyed and gulped as he knew he couldn't escape in time. To his surprise, Fal grabbed him and they both vanished instantly.
They reappeared in a dark forest and fell to the ground.
"What the hell was that, Fal?" Marcus screamed as he got to his feet and tried to catch his bearings.
"How should I know? I do know I just saved your life so a thanks would be appreciated." Fal said in a huff as he stood as well.
"Well, if we get away from them alive, I'll thank you then." Marcus commented and Fal could see he referenced a huge pack of wolves surrounding them on almost all sides and closing in.
The two boys looked at each, started screaming and ran toward the only exit they had, deeper into the forest. The wolves were hot on their trail. Had they been normal human boys they would have been overtaken, luckily for them both Marcus and Fal were hybrids of dragon and Mazoku. This allowed them more speed.
"We could just fight them!" Marcus yelled as they ran.
"Too many, besides I like wolves!" Fal yelled back.
"I bet they'll like you more when they're ripping you apart for dinner!" Marcus continued. Fal just rolled his eyes.
They came to a clearing with a small lake. The water was crystal clear blue and looked very enticing to the exhausted boys.
"Let's get some water to drink." Fal suggested.
"I hope we'll have time." Marcus commented but joined Fal at the lake for a drink.
It wasn't more than a few minutes before they heard growling behind them. They turned in horror to see that the wolves had caught up to them.
"It was nice knowing you, Bro." Marcus said and held out his hand to Fal.
"You too, Bro." Fal replied and shook his hand.
The boys rose slowly.
"Go down fighting?" Marcus suggested.
"As opposed to crying a lot? Okay." Fal agreed.
Just as the wolves prepared to pounce, a new voice was heard.
"That's enough! Your dinner is waiting for you back at your den. Go on now!"
The wolves heard this and immediately retreated. As the pack cleared, the two hybrid boys could see their savior. She was a young girl, appearing around their age. She was dressed in a simple black dress with a black hooded cloak over her shoulders. The hood was down so they could see her vibrant violet hair. She watched the wolves leave and turned to the boys.
"I suppose greetings are in order. Welcome unexpected guests to Wolf Pack Island." She said in an amused tone and gave a respectful bow with a curtsey.
"We're on Wolf Pack Island? Does that mean you're a Mazoku?" Fal asked anxiously.
"Aw darn, I couldn't use my father's famous phrase. Yes, I am a Mazoku. My name is ..." She started to reply but was surprisingly interrupted by Marcus.
"Xeria." He simply said.
The Mazoku girl opened her eyes wide in shock and the boys could see her eyes were a shade of purple amethyst.
"How did you know my name?" The now-named Xeria demanded of Marcus as she approached both boys.
"I don't know." Marcus managed to get out before he collapsed to the ground, grabbing his head in obvious pain.
"Marcus, are you alright? Here, let me heal you!" Fal tried healing magic but it seemed to hurt Marcus more.
"Hmm...why don't you two come with me? I'm certain my father or grandmother could help us." Xeria suggested and before Fal could object, she grabbed both boys' hands and they instantly teleported into a large dining hall.
The room was dimly lit with only a few torches on the walls and candles on the table for light. On the table, there was a wide variety of delectable foods including chicken, beef, salad, potatoes, soups and chocolate desserts.
"It seems Xeria has brought some unexpected visitors to our home. Welcome Fal and Marcus. How interesting to see you both again." A strong female voice spoke from the shadows. The boys, surprised that their names were known looked in the direction of the voice. It came from a beautiful woman seating atop a throne, sipping a glass of wine. The woman descended from her throne to stand before the three young teenagers.
"I am Lord Xellass Metallium, the Greater Beast. I bid you welcome to my home and invite you both to join us for lunch. All your questions will be answered after you've had something to eat."
Fal and Marcus looked at each other incredulously but their stomachs growled so they didn't argue and took seats at the table.
"Shall I go get Father to join us, Grandmother?" Xeria asked.
Xellass nodded and Xeria teleported away momentarily and returned with another individual. He also sported the same eye and hair color as hers but seemed to struggle to walk as he leaned on his daughter and his jewel-encrusted staff to steady himself. He took his seat at the table and then Xeria took hers. Then the five enjoyed the meal, passing around plates as a family would around the holidays.
After the plates were filled and all started eating, Fal asked, "So now that we're eating , may I ask as to how you knew our names?"
"I believe that question as well as some others can be answered by young Marcus." Xellass replied before taking a bite.
Fal and Xeria looked at Marcus whose socked expression clearly read that he was clueless.
"With all due respect, Ju-ou-sama, I have no idea what you're referring to." Marcus said politely, pausing his lunch. Fal looked at him, surprised, as he wasn't used to Marcus being so formal or polite.
"I think it's time for you and Xeria to get better acquainted, Marcus." Xellass continued. That earned another bizarre look from Xeria who also looked to Xelloss as if to ask, 'what is she talking about?' Marcus, however, was very keen on the idea as he had a huge grin on his face.
Xellass stood and motioned for the two young children to join her away from the table.
"Marcus, the truth is you met Fal and Xeria shortly after their birth but due to some high level sealing magic, you've forgotten." Xellass explained.
"I was told I couldn't speak for the first two years of my life and I know my Mazoku powers are still sealed. I doubt anything could break that seal. I've been trying for years." Marcus said in a dejected, but angry tone.
"Yeah, Sagalia-sama always says he wishes you couldn't talk still." Fal added with a grin, earning a mild glare from Marcus.
"Well, I suspect that Xeria can break your seal completely. The pain you've been experiencing is your power trying to break free and I suspect it only began when Xeria found you two." Xellass continued.
"That's right. Marcus never had problems like this that I can remember. Then his memories are trying to break through, too. That's why he knew Xeria's name." Fal deduced. Xellass simply nodded and Xelloss smiled proudly.
"Okay, so what do I do, Grandmother? How am I to break the seal?" Xeria asked, sending an anxious look toward her father. Xelloss rose slowly and stood behind his daughter.
"Just relax and allow your Mazoku powers to flow all around you." He suggested softly.
Xeria closed her eyes and her power started flowing all around her like a black mist.
"Now, open your eyes and take hold of Marcus' hands." Xelloss continued.
Xeria complied, opened her eyes and joined hands with Marcus. Instantly, there was an intense reaction. The power engulfed both of them as their minds connected. They were both able to see each other's childhood memories, including the day they first met. Marcus could feel all the seals on his memory break and started to feel a dark power rising. He gripped Xeria's hands tighter. As Xeria shifted through Marcus' memories, she settled on one image. It was the image of a golden dragon priestess. She had long, golden blond hair and crystal blue eyes. She dressed mostly in a white gown with a white and pink cloak over her shoulders. She always seemed to be with Fal in Marcus' memory. She smiled at him gently and would be full of warm hugs. Her smile also seemed to hold some sadness. The image disturbed Xeria so much that she broke the connection to Marcus and they were both blasted violently to opposite sides of the room.
Fal ran to Marcus' side while Xelloss attended to Xeria.
"What happened Xeria?" Xellass asked, not moving from her original spot.
"It was that image. I couldn't stand seeing it anymore!" Xeria said, out of breath.
"What was so bothersome, Xeria-chan?" Xelloss asked.
Xellass approached Xeria as she had yet to rise from the floor. Fal and Marcus approached with Fal supporting Marcus on his shoulders.
"It was the image of a female dragon. She had blond hair, blue eyes and dressed in white. She smiled so gently and I felt a warmth but there was also a sadness in her eyes and I couldn't shake it." She described.
"It was Filia-san." Marcus added, equally breathless.
Xeria noticed her father visibly wince as he took a seat on the floor beside her. Xellass growled low.
"Why would an image of my mother be so upsetting to you, Xeria?" Fal asked, confused.
Before Xeria could answer, Marcus' face took on a look of knowledge and he stated, "I remember now! Fal, I think Xeria is your sister."
"What?!" Both Fal and Xeria yelled simultaneously.
Xelloss sighed and invited Fal and Marcus to join them on the floor. They sat down and only Xellass remained standing.
"The truth is...Marcus is correct. Xeria, Filia-san is your mother. Fal, I am your father. You both are twins." Xelloss explained.
"So that's what my mother looks like and you are the long-lost brother I was told I had." Xeria reflected softly.
"But this makes no sense! Mother never mentioned any of this to me! I'm a hybrid, too?! I thought... I thought I was normal." Fal rose angrily at first then dropped to his knees, covering his eyes with his hands and sobbing lightly.
"Welcome to my world, Fal!" Marcus said dryly, clapping Fal on the shoulder.
"Marcus, bro, seriously, I'm upset about this!" Fal yelled at him.
"That may be, bro, which I seriously want to be one day, but you're also being rude." Marcus teased.
"You're the expert on being rude, you jerk!" Fal yelled and pushed Marcus down.
The two boys started fighting. Xellass simply shrugged and Xelloss shook his head so Xeria pushed herself to her feet and jumped into the fray.
"Will you both just stop?!" She screamed.
The boys did stop. The three teens sat on the floor speechless for a few minutes before Fal asked, "why would you want to be my brother, Marcus?
"Why else? I get her!" Marcus said with a wide grin and gestured toward Xeria.
"Seriously? You don't even know me." Xeria asked incredulously.
"Don't you remember? We're destined!" Marcus declared.
The bizarre look on Xeria's face was enough to make both boys laugh. After a few moments, Xeria shook her head and laughed, too.
"Well, Marcus, we need to get home." Fal said, rising.
"Why so soon? Marcus' seals are still not all broken." Xeria asked.
"I have a lot of questions for my mother. Do you want to come with us, Xeria? You could meet her." Fal suggested.
"Are you daft? The way she looks - they'll kill her!" Marcus yelled, rising to his feet.
"Agreed. It's too dangerous." Xelloss said, rising with the aid of his staff.
"I want to go, Father. I want to meet her. I feel like I need to. In the memory, she didn't reach for me, but maybe that sadness in her eyes is her regretting that decision. I need to know." Xeria said softly but firmly.
"Forgive me, Xeria, but I agree with Xelloss-sama. It's too dangerous! I don't suspect any danger from Filia-san, but practically any other dragon in that place would sound the alarm and the whole army would be on you!" Marcus tried to convince Xeria.
"Geez, trying a little hard to earn brownie points, aren't you?" Fal asked sarcastically. Marcus set him a glare before Fal continued,
"Seriously though, bro, calm down. We can contact Val and tell him to bring Mother to the old oak tree outside the barrier. We can all meet there and Xeria won't even have to come to the temple."
Xeria smiled as did Xelloss. Marcus shrugged, so the plan was set. The three teens gathered to teleport to the old oak tree with Xeria reassuring her father that she'd be fine.
"Fal?" Xelloss questioned, but Fal didn't look in his direction.
"Forgive my rudeness, but I have a lot to think about." He said.
"I understand. Be safe." Xelloss said softly.
After the three hybrids left, Xelloss collapsed to his knees.
The Old Oak Tree, just outside the Dragon Shrine
It didn't take long for Valteria to sense Fal and Marcus with his heightened Ancient Dragon senses. They asked him to retrieve Filia and meet them back there. He agreed and flew off to find her. After Val's departure, Xeria teleported in from the Astral Plane.
"So I have an adopted brother, too?" She asked. Fal simply nodded but Marcus had a comment.
"You're gaining a lot of family on one day, Xeria: A brother, an adopted brother, a mother and a fiancé."
"Bro, you're laying it on a bit thick aren't you?" Fal teased. Xeria started to blush but then quickly hid behind the tree.
Moments later, Val and Filia emerged from the barrier. Filia immediately ran to Fal and embraced him.
"Oh Fal, I was so worried about you! Where have you been? I heard you were attacked! I've been fretting for hours!" Filia said hysterically.
Fal didn't respond. In fact, he was rather stiff in his mother's embrace.
"Don't worry, Filia-san, I'm safe, too!" Marcus joked.
"I'm overjoyed you are both safe. Marcus, Sagalia-sama has been reprimanded so you should be safe." Filia responded.
"I doubt it." Marcus muttered under his breath.
"Fal. you're too quiet. What's wrong?" Valteria asked in concern. Fal didn't answer him but focused his attention on Filia.
"Mother, am I an only child?" He asked bluntly.
"So I'm chopped liver now?" Val added in disgust.
"I meant by blood. Well, mother?" Fal clarified.
"Of course, Fal, why would you ask that?" Filia answered quickly and then sensed something different, something very dark. She pulled her cloak around herself tighter to ward off the chill.
"I have a question, too, Filia-san! It's about a Mazoku that we learned about in class today!" Marcus yelled, raising his hand obnoxiously.
"What is your question, Marcus?" Filia responded, still overwhelmed by Fal's bizarre behavior and the darkness she felt.
"I've heard that Xelloss Metallium doesn't lie. He just says 'it's a secret' when he doesn't want to tell the whole truth. Is that true?" Marcus asked, an evil smirk gracing his face as he found himself really enjoying Filia's anxiety.
"Yes, I have heard that. Wait, you learned about Xelloss today?! What else did you learn?!" Filia asked, her anxiety rising as it always did when Xelloss was mentioned.
Filia had thought about him a lot over the years and yet she still could not pinpoint exactly how she felt about him. Whenever she tried to tell herself she hated him, she would feel a pain in her heart that she couldn't identify either. She concluded she needed to avoid anything to do with him - thoughts, feelings, hearing his name, etc. She would always consider herself fortunate that Fal looked almost nothing like him.
"You asked earlier where we were. When Marcus was attacked, I grabbed him and thought, 'bring us somewhere safe.' We ended up on Wolf Pack Island." Fal began.
Filia audibly gulped as Fal continued. Valteria was so engrossed with the conversation and his brother's bizarre behavior that he only then noticed a presence behind the tree.
"We were chased by some wolves but we were saved." Fal continued.
"By who?" Filia asked.
"Maybe by her, Mother." Val suggested as he guided Xeria from behind the tree by the hand.
Filia was shocked and her jaw dropped as she came face to face with the daughter she thought was lost to her forever. Xeria looked at Filia with contempt. Her amethyst eyes were darkened with fury as she stood in-between Marcus and Val and crossed her arms.
"So Filia-san, if Fal is an only child but Xelloss-sama doesn't lie, who is she?" Marcus asked coldly.
"You mean, my senses have been right this whole time? I knew it! I knew Fal felt differently from everyone else but you, Marcus!" Val said excitedly. Fal said nothing.
Filia slowly rose and stumbled toward Xeria.
"Can it really be? After all these years..." She stated as she reached for her daughter.
"Stop. That's far enough." Xeria said, pushing her power out to be a barrier around her.
"The truth, Mother, we deserve to know." Fal demanded. Val looked like he wanted to object but Marcus nudged him so he stayed quiet.
"You're right, Fal. The truth is there was a night when I made some poor choices. From those choices, however, two beautiful children were created. You and your sister, Xeria. The day after you two were born, it was decided that you and Val would come with me to the Dragon Shrine. Xeria chose to go live with her father. I never thought I'd get a chance to see you again, Xeria. You're growing up beautifully." Filia began and again was blocked by Xeria's power.
"You made your opinions perfectly clear back then and even now. You didn't even attempt to reach out to me then and now you denied my existence! I told Father that I had to meet you. Now I see it was an obvious waste of my time. Pray you never see me again, Gold!" Xeria expressed angrily and turned away. Filia collapsed to the ground in tears. Suddenly, Xelloss teleported in.
"Come home now, Xeria. The dragon army is on its way." He said seriously but hesitated when he locked his gaze with Filia's.
The two said nothing but a thousand unspoken words passed between them.
"I'm ready, Father!" Xeria said, rather impatiently.
"Wait, Xeria! When will I see you again?" Marcus asked quickly, grabbing Xeria's hands.
"I'm not sure. Listen, Marcus, I want to help break your seals but I ..." Xeria stated but was cut off by seeing the huge swarm of dragons headed their way.
"There'll be another time. Go, be safe!" Marcus urged.
"I will see you again, Marcus. Until then, maybe this will get you started." Xeria stated quickly, grabbed Marcus by the front of his shirt and pulled him to kiss her on the lips.
Marcus was happily surprised and enjoyed the contact. As quickly as it began, it was over and she and her father were gone. Then Marcus felt something snap within him. He grabbed his chest in pain and passed out.
When he awoke, he was in his bed with his younger sister crying over him.
"I'm not dead, Lauria." He said sarcastically.
"Oh, Marcus, I'm so glad you're awake! She sobbed and hugged him.
"Keep up that tight hugging and you might strangle him, Lauria-chan." Valteria teased as he rounded the corner with Fal.
"What's going on?" Marcus asked as Lauria eased up.
"It seems Xeria was successful in breaking the seals on your Mazoku powers. Now the elders are scared and they're arguing about what to do with all three of us. Mother and Milgazia-sama are against it, considering it goes against some old agreement, but they're outnumbered." Fal explained.
"What are our options?" Marcus asked, already suspecting the answers.
"Complete Sealing or death." Val answered.
"So ... when are we running?" Marcus asked bluntly.
"My vote - immediately, but Fal and Lauria won't come with us." Val replied.
"Why not?" Marcus asked angrily.
"I'll miss Mama and Papa!" Lauria yelled and started to cry.
"Well, I suppose you're not in danger anyway. You're a full-blooded golden dragon. What's your excuse, Fal?" Marcus reasoned with a shrug.
"I'm a full-blooded golden dragon, too." Fal answered.
"Uh, no, you're not. Fal, both of your parents confirmed it. You're a hybrid like me and Xeria, your sister." Marcus reminded him.
"Shut up! I won't hear that!" Fal screamed and ran from the room. Lauria followed him after giving her brother a dirty look.
"I already tried, bro. He's determined to think this day never happened at all. Looks like we're on our own." Val said sadly.
"How would they even seal you?" Marcus asked as he started to rise from bed.
"I wouldn't be sealed. I'd be destroyed. I'm too much of a threat." Val answered.
"That's stupid! You didn't do anything!" Marcus yelled.
"You remember who's making the decision." Val said in a bored tone.
"Oh yeah, a bunch of prejudiced, old golden morons. Well, we can decide destination later. For now, let's go." Marcus suggested.
So the two teenage boys ran for their lives. They didn't fly for fear of being sensed by the army. They started running toward the barrier by the old oak tree, knowing if they could reach it, they had a fighting chance. They looked up in surprise to see Xeria there waiting for them. She seemed to be trying to enter the barrier to get to them but the holy barrier was causing her pain. Just when they thought they had a shot and now a destination, the dragon army was upon them, firing flame breath attacks at them.
Val was hit on his ankle by a blast and fell. Marcus stopped short and turned to help him. As he started to pick him, they both noticed some of the army break off toward Xeria.
"Go to her. Go to your destiny. Be free for both of us, Brother." Val said in a voice barely above a whisper and used all his strength to throw Marcus toward the barrier and through it. He crashed right into Xeria, saving her from a blast she hadn't seen coming. As Xeria and Marcus picked themselves up, all they could do was look on helplessly as Val as blasted into nothing by the dragon army.
"Val!" Marcus screamed and his rage fed into his newly unlocked Mazoku blood, allowing his power to fully awaken.
With one burst of power, he destroyed all the dragons threatening he and Xeria and half the ones that killed Valteria. He began to collapse after the power unleashed, but Xeria caught him and supported him on her shoulders. They looked across the barrier to see the remnants of both their families.
"Goodbye." Marcus said softly and Xeria said nothing. She just transported herself and Marcus back to Wolf Pack Island.
Wolf Pack Island
"So that's all I know." Marcus finished explaining the lack of options they were given.
"So Fal didn't want to come." Xelloss said in a despondent tone and started coughing.
Xeria instantly was at her father's side with a warm cup of tea to soothe him.
"Please forgive me for being so forward, Xelloss-sama, but what is wrong with you?" Marcus asked as respectfully as he could. Xeria sent him a mild glare, but Xellass chuckled and Xelloss smiled weakly.
"I'm dying, Marcus. Xeria doesn't like when I say that, but it's true. I was infected with love and happiness from my tryst with Filia-san and I've been slowly getting weaker and weaker." Xelloss started to explain but Marcus interrupted.
"But wait, did this happen my old man, too, then?"
"Fortunately for Dynaast, he was spared this fate. Trust me, I explored that avenue early on, but the only difference I could find is how the Mazoku in question saw the dragon in question from the start. Dynaast never saw your mother as more than a fling. Xelloss had a lot of his respect, not love, but respect for his little gold." Xellass explained. Marcus nodded his understanding, allowing Xelloss to continue.
"My time is near and I'm saddened that my son wants no part of me. I'm afraid, Ju-ou-sama, that your plan may be ruined." Xelloss finished.
"On the contrary, Xelloss, my loyal servant, I think it will still play out, perhaps a bit differently than I planned but oh well." Xellass explained vaguely and took a sip of her wine.
"I follow you, Ju-ou-sama. I understand. Then it is time." Xelloss said as he stood and walked to the center of the room with his staff. He motioned for Xeria and Marcus to join him.
"My Master will need servants when I am gone. I offer my remaining dark power to both of you to share. It is too much for only one of you to bear. You will remain hybrids biologically, but your Mazoku blood and your propensity toward darkness will be enhanced exponentially. In return, you will both service Ju-ou-sama in my stead as her general and priestess. Do you both accept?" Xelloss explained quite seriously with his eyes wide open.
"Xelloss-sama, I will be honored to accept in Fal's place. I respect that I probably wasn't your first choice to accept your power but I will serve Ju-ou-sama proudly. I would also like to ask your blessing to pursue Xeria as a mate when we're a bit older." Marcus said and respectfully bowed.
"Granted." Xelloss replied. Xellass smirked. Xeria was deathly quiet.
"Father, I ... I don't want you to die! I love you, Father!" Xeria cried, clinging to her father with everything she had. Xelloss smiled gently and hugged his daughter to him.
"Xeria-chan, you are precious to me and the feelings I have for you, I should not be able to feel. I love you, too, sweet daughter and that is why I chose you. No one is more deserving and there's no one I trust to carry on my legacy than you." Xelloss whispered to her. Xeria nodded her acceptance.
Marcus looked sad for Xeria while Xellass looked like she wanted to vomit.
"Time runs short, Xelloss." She reminded him.
"Yes, Ju-ou-sama. All I can say is ..." He began.
"Don't say you love me!" Xellass chided him.
"I was honored to serve you, Ju-ou-sama." He replied with a smile and a bow.
Xellass smiled genuinely back at him and bowed her head briefly before replying, "The honor was mine, Xelloss."
Xeria and Marcus were instructed to take a knee before Xelloss. Marcus was ready but Xeria was still trying to fight off sobs. He took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"I'm right here with you, always." He whispered to her. She gave him a thankful smile and clung to his hand tightly.
Xelloss raised his staff high above his head, then brought it down with a force and smashed the red jewel encrusted in it. Dark energy erupted from the broken jewel and rose to engulf Xeria and Marcus completely in a cocoon. Outside the cocoon, you could hear screams of pain as they absorbed the dark powers. In Zefilia, Lina Gabriev dropped her spoon where she was making dinner and began to shudder. On the outskirts approaching Zefilia, Zelgadiss and Amelia stopped their horses, sensing danger. At the dragon temple, Filia felt a sharp pain in her heart and collapsed next to Fal's recovery bed. When the cocoon dissipated, Xeria and Marcus were barely conscious on the floor but still joined by the hand.
"Rise, my servants." Xellass commanded.
Xeria and Marcus immediately awoke and slowly stood, steadying each other as they did. Xeria looked for her father but the being known as Xelloss ceased to exist. She closed her eyes to try to stop it but a single tear fell from each eye.
"Now is not the time to mourn. It is a time to relish your newfound powers and status. As my servants, you now hold places in the Mazoku Hierarchy. You will need weapons. Xelloss was perfect in his preparations. Marcus, my dark general, step forward. I present you with your weapon, Yami no Ken, the Sword of Darkness." Xellass said, handing Marcus an empty sword hilt. When he seemed confused, Xeria suggested, "Say 'Yami o.'" Marcus shrugged.
"Yami o!" He called out and a flame of dark magic shot out from the hilt, forming a sword.
"Cool!" Marcus said in awestruck approval. Xellass smirked.
"Xeria, carrying on traditions from your father, you will carry his staff as my dark priestess." Xellass picked up Xelloss' broken staff and presented it to Xeria.
"I am beyond honored, Ju-ou-sama, but what about the jewel?" Xeria asked in a soft voice.
"You will create that yourself and you'll understand when you see it just how to do that. In the meantime, I have a special mission for you both." Xellass explained.
Both teens immediately bowed and took a knee to hear their master's words.
"You are to deliver Xelloss' final messages to certain individuals he felt worthy to hear them. They must be delivered personally." Xellass ordered, handing several envelopes to Xeria and Marcus.
"Do you understand?" She asked.
"Yes Master." They both replied before teleporting out to complete their mission.
As she stood alone in her throne room, Xellass allowed herself a moment to bow her head to mourn the loss of her favorite servant. The wolves that inhabited the island all howled to the moon as they felt their master's pain to express the sorrow, she herself could not.
Zefilia
Lina Gabriev paused her feeding frenzy and started shuddering at the dinner table. Gourry paused in his eating in concern.
"Are you alright, Lina?" He asked.
"A dark power is here. Show yourself!" Lina demanded as she rose from her chair warily.
Xeria and Marcus teleported in next to the table.
"Forgive us for interrupting dinner, Aunt Lina and Uncle Gourry. We would have waited until you were finished." Xeria explained. Marcus just looked at the two humans in shock.
"Oh Xeria-chan, hello!" Gourry greeted Xeria with a smile and a huge warm hug.
"So Xeria, who is this? Is he your boyfriend?" Lina asked in a teasing tone.
"This is Marcus and I guess you could call him that. Supposedly, we're destined or something. Don't mind him. He's still in shock at your eating habits." Xeria introduced with a chuckle.
"Forgive my rudeness, Lina-san and Gourry-san, but I've never seen any living creature eat like that. It was mightily impressive!" Marcus greeted.
"Marcus, huh? Why does that sound so familiar?" Lina pondered aloud.
"Isn't he the kid who couldn't talk?" Gourry suggested.
"Oh yeah! Gourry, how did you remember that?" Lina asked.
"I dunno. Am I smart then?" Gourry asked proudly.
"No, Gourry, you're not. Anyway, something's different about you, Xeria. Why the visit anyway?" Lina brushed off Gourry.
Xeria looked crestfallen so Marcus answered for her.
"We are here on a mission from our master, Ju-ou-sama. We have messages to deliver."
"I thought Xelloss was her only servant. Where is that pain in the ass? Is he hiding somewhere? I have a fireball with his name on it." Lina ranted. Gourry looked at Xeria funny as she was very quiet but then he was distracted by a knock at the door.
"It's open!" Lina yelled and the door opened to reveal Zelgadiss and Amelia.
"Miss Lina, it's really unjust to leave us waiting in town!" Amelia ranted, pointing an accusing finger at Lina.
"We figured you were still eating so we came here, but obviously something else distracted you. Hello Xeria-chan, who's your friend?" Zelgadiss greeted. He, too, noted that Xeria was unearthly quiet.
"Oh, is he your boyfriend?" Amelia asked with little hearts in her eyes.
"Why does this sound familiar?" Gourry asked.
"Because we had this conversation already, Gourry! Apparently Xeria and Marcus, who was the two year old who couldn't talk, serve Xellass now." Lina explained, bopping Gourry off the head with her slipper. Marcus nodded in agreement. Xeria said nothing. She hadn't even made eye contact.
"But what about Xelloss-san?" Amelia asked. Xeria visibly winced.
Zelgadiss had seen enough, walked up to Xeria and knelt down before her. He put his hands on her shoulders and noticed she was shaking as she purposely tried not to look at him.
"He's gone, isn't he?" He asked softly. The other humans gasped. Xeria tried really hard to simply nod but she broke down into tears and launched herself into her uncle's arms. Zelgadiss held her and stroked her back.
"He's gone?! What the hell does that mean?!" Lina yelled, grabbing Marcus by his shirt collar and lifting him off the floor.
"Lina, calm down. Let the kid speak." Gourry immediately was at Lina's side and coerced her to put the young general down.
"Please tell us what happened!" Amelia pleaded. Marcus looked at Xeria who kept crying, so he sighed and started to explain after slightly stroking her hair.
"Xelloss-sama was dying. When he was Filia-san years ago, it infected him with life-enhancing emotions and it slowly killed him. Before he died, he passed his remaining power onto us so we would serve Ju-ou-sama in his place."
"But that's so wrong! You're saying he fell in love with Filia and it killed him?! Love is supposed to purely good!" Amelia ranted, unable to grasp the concept that love killed her friend.
"It makes sense if you really think about it, Amelia. Xelloss was a Mazoku, purely evil. How many times did we hold him at bay with your justice speeches and songs about life? Those probably made him sick, but true love would be strong enough to kill him. It's ironically depressing." Zelgadiss reasoned as Xeria started to calm down.
"I'm surprised he wouldn't give the power to Fal." Gourry added.
"I think he wanted to but Fal refused to acknowledge his Mazoku blood. That was really upsetting for him." Marcus replied.
"You said you had messages to deliver. Was it about Xelloss?" Lina asked.
"No, the messages are from him. He had a few words of final farewells. In fact, now that all four of you are here, you're saving us a trip." Marcus explained with a shrug.
Xeria took a few deep breaths to calm herself down and lifted herself away from Zelgadiss. She wiped tears away from her eyes before stating, "We have a mission to complete." She handed two envelopes to Marcus and opened one of her two and began reading.
"Amelia-san, you were always an interesting person to be around. At times, you could be as crazed and violent as Lina-san and because of your innocence, it was all the sweeter. I will be honest, your justice speeches and 'life is wonderful' rants wanted to make me vomit or kill you but that also added to the fun and for that, I thank you. Farewell Princess of Justice."
Amelia immediately began sobbing and hid her face in Zelgadiss' chest to continue. Marcus opened his first letter and began to read,
"Zelgadiss-san, you and I always had a hate/hate relationship as I'm sure you'd agree. Despite that, you were always great for a full, delicious dinner. Your self-hatred, rage and mind for vengeance were always great to pick at and have fun with. I wanted to thank you for that but also for Xeria's sake. She took to you when she was young and you offered guidance and support as a being stuck between multiple races. No more secrets, I appreciate you. Thank you."
Zelgadiss smirked slightly and bowed his head for a being he hated but had forgiven long ago. Marcus noted the last message was upsetting for Xeria, so he squeezed her hand and nodded at her that he would continue. He read his second message.
"Gourry-san, you always intrigued me. Oh wait, you won't know what that means. I always found you interesting. You're a complete idiot and yet, at odd times, you would ask the appropriate question that needed to be asked. You saw right through me but never mentioned it to any of the others. You're an amazing swordsman and watching your battles was always exciting. In fact, my master's new general carries a sword inspired by your Hikari no Ken. You're a great match for Lina-san since you can take a lot of abuse. Stay strong, Gourry-san, because although she'll never admit it, she needs you. Goodbye."
Marcus finished reading and passed the messages over to Zelgadiss and Gourry to keep. Gourry was quiet but respectfully bowed his head. Xeria took another deep breath, before opening the last envelope and reading.
"Dearest Lina-san, you are the finest example of moodiness, violence and mayhem. Bandits, chefs, dragons and Mazoku alike cower in terror at the sound of your name. You have provided me many a fine meal over the years and many grand adventures. You would have made an amazing, powerful Mazoku but please don't ever change, Lina-san. Thank you for all the fun times and precious memories that can still make me smile. I will miss you."
Upon completion, Xeria handed Amelia and Lina their notes.
"Wow, never expected that jerk to have cared so much. Geez! Thanks to his depressing messages, I have to re-warm my food!" Lina said as angrily as she could, grabbed her plate and walked into the kitchen, out of sight.
"That's so sad! Poor Xelloss-san!" Amelia cried, wiping away tears.
"So you guys got the job, huh? Do you really have a sword like mine?" Gourry asked in an excited tone.
"Yes, we accepted extra dark power from Father and now we serve Grandmother." Xeria explained as Marcus showed off his sword to Gourry who started showing him a few moves.
"It's not too late! End your evil ways as Mazoku and become real humans!" Amelia suddenly ranted, pointing at Xeria and Marcus.
"W-what?!" Marcus said, completely exasperated. Xeria started laughing so hard, she dropped to her knees and held her stomach.
"Thanks Auntie, I needed that!" She said, wiping away tears of mirth.
"Hey, what kind of fun am I missing here?" Lina said, storming back into the room, notably without her food.
"Amelia just gave a justice speech about them becoming real humans." Zelgadiss explained with a defeated sigh.
"Well, no wonder Xeria's cracking up and Marcus looks confused. Amelia, they wouldn't be humans anyway!" Lina yelled and whacked Amelia with the slipper.
"I meant not evil at all!" Amelia whined and tried to fend off the slipper.
"So there's no such thing as a human with capacity for evil? Aunt Lina?" Xeria asked suggestively and was roasted by a fireball for her trouble.
"See, you'll have to take the abuse I used to give Xelloss!" Lina said with a humph as Marcus helped Xeria up.
"I'd be honored to do so, Aunt Lina. Now we must go. We have two more messages to deliver." Xeria said with a bow.
"Who else is getting a message?" Gourry asked. Xeria shot a look at Zelgadiss, who shook his head.
"Do you realize what you set up Gourry?" He asked. Gourry looked at him, completely confused.
"It's a secret." Both hybrids replied in true Xelloss fashion and they were gone, avoiding the next barrage of fireballs.
"I worry about those two." Zelgadiss commented.
"We all know how evil Xelloss could be. Are those kids going to be able to handle that?" Lina added. Amelia and Gourry just shook their heads in uncertainty.
The Old Oak Tree
"Are you ready for this one?" Marcus asked, concerned.
"I have a lot more emotional attachment to my human aunts and uncles than I do to my biological family behind that barrier. I fear this trip may be harder on you than me." Xeria responded.
"You may be right. At least I know you'll be there for me, right?" He admitted.
"Always." She replied and grabbed his hand for emphasis.
"Shall we make a grand entrance?" Marcus suggested.
"Yes, let's!" Xeria responded with a smirk.
Hands still joined, they boosted their dark power up and dramatically took a step into the barrier. It bothered them a bit, Xeria a bit more as she had no connection to her dragon blood, but outwardly they only winced slightly. On cue, a small dragon army approached them. Milgazia led them.
"You both are trespassing here. State your business or leave immediately." He addressed them.
"We are simply messengers. We have two messages to deliver, then we will leave." Marcus explained, holding up the remaining two envelopes.
Milgazia transformed into his human form while the rest of the dragon army was poised to strike at a moment's notice.
"You have changed, Marcus." He commented.
"I got an upgrade. One I chose for myself, not by the old man for once." Marcus said, a hint of anger in his voice. Xeria squeezed his hand slightly, but said nothing.
'I may have bawled my eyes out at Aunt Lina and Uncle Gourry's, but Marcus might take someone's head off in his rage. I'll have to watch him.' She thought to herself.
"I can deliver the messages for you. Who are they for?" Milgazia suggested.
"We are under orders to deliver these messages personally. They are for Fal and his mother." Xeria explained.
"What will you do if I say no?" Milgazia asked and gave himself a flashback as Xeria replied menacingly with her eyes closed, "Something other than negotiation."
"Very well. Follow me." He said stiffly and slowly guided the two Mazoku hybrids into the temple with the army closely behind.
When they entered the temple, dragons scattered everywhere in terror. Marcus and Xeria both grinned evilly, enjoying their fear. They were led into a small room to wait while Milgazia went to retrieve Fal and Filia. Almost immediately, Lauria and her mother, Faranth, ran into the room. Lauria launched herself into Marcus' arms, crying openly. Faranth held back, one hand over her heart as she also wept. Xeria looked on and judged by the look in Marcus' eyes that she was right. This trip was going to be harder on him.
"Lauria, I keep telling you I'm not dead." Marcus joked and peeled his sister off him.
"Marcus, you left and I am so confused! Why did you kill Val? Is it because she made you evil?" Lauria accused, giving Xeria a dirty look.
"What?!" Marcus yelled and pushed Lauria back toward her mother with his power. Xeria put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down.
"You have obviously been misinformed. Marcus did not kill Valteria. I witnessed the entire ordeal. Both of them were running away as the dragon army chased them. Val was injured and instead of letting Marcus help him, he sacrificed himself and threw Marcus to safety. The dragon army blasted him into oblivion. That is the truth." Xeria explained calmly.
"Why should we believe you?! You made my brother evil! It's all your fault!" Lauria accused.
"Your sister is quite obnoxious, Marcus. You may need to silence her before I do." Xeria said menacingly and did her father's famous "creepy eyes open" trick. It had the desired effect as both Faranth and Lauria backed up a few steps, shivering in fear. This time, Marcus put a hand on her shoulder to calm her down.
At that moment, Milgazia returned with Filia and Fal. Filia entered the room with trepidation but tried to hold her head up. Xeria resisted the urge to destroy her instantly considering she killed her father but the bloodlust was emanating off her in waves causing Filia to shudder. Xeria also noted that Filia's eyes were red and puffy as if she had shed many tears. Xeria hoped she was prepared to shed more. Marcus looked at Fal curiously. He looked the same, somewhat, but something was different about his former friend that he couldn't place. Then it came to him.
"What's wrong with your eyes? They're different." He asked abruptly.
Xeria opened one eye in confusion and looked at Marcus, before directing her attention toward her brother's eyes. Her own eyes both opened wide as she realized their shape was completely different.
"I take it you disapprove of my new look. I made a choice and volunteered to undergo complete sealing and purification. Mother tried to talk me out of it. Frankly, I don't know why, but I feel better than ever. I am a purebred golden dragon." Fal explained proudly.
Xeria narrowed her eyes in disgust and fury but Marcus was more vocal.
"You're pathetic, Fal. I can't even call you, bro, anymore. I suppose you think I killed Val, too. Well, hate to tell you but you just joined the golden cult that slaughtered your brother!" Marcus yelled.
Fal was about to retort when Xeria stepped between the two boys once again stopping their quarreling.
"Enough. We have a mission to complete. Despite the obvious fact that my former brother is a completely moronic, pathetic excuse for existence, we must remember our purpose here." She said with a smirk.
Marcus bit back a chuckle and stepped back. Xeria looked toward Fal almost daring him to challenge her but he said nothing. Filia then found the courage to speak.
"Milgazia-sama said you had messages for us."
Xeria tensed visibly when she spoke so Marcus replied, "Indeed, we do, but only for you two. The rest of you need to leave. The messages from Xelloss-sama are private."
"That is fine." Filia replied. Milgazia wanted to protest but Filia waved him off.
"We'll be right outside this room." He stated as he guided Faranth and Lauria out.
Xeria took the notes and handed one in particular to Marcus.
"This one will probably infuriate me so you take it. I'll take the last one." She stated. Marcus nodded, opened his envelope and started reading.
"Oh my Filia-chan, my selfish, spazzy Filia-chan. What do I say to you? I guess I should come right out and say it. I'm dying anyway. I love you, Filia-chan. I know you probably won't believe me but I usually don't lie so please trust these words. Even if you do believe me, you're probably mortified by the very idea. Regardless, I want to thank as well, for our children. Meeting Fal again was amazing. You did a fine job raising him. I know you wouldn't approve of the job I did with Xeria but she is precious to me so thank you for the experience of being a father. My sweet, beloved, sometimes psychotically violent Filia-chan, I bid you farewell and eternal gratitude."
Marcus finished reading the note which had proved difficult as he had to resist the urge to vomit. Xeria was a ball of emotions from disgusted to depressed to furious. He handed the note to Filia who reread it as if she didn't believe it. Now she knew what that horrible pain she felt had been.
"Xelloss is gone then? How is that possible?" She asked.
"You killed him." Xeria said darkly.
"What? I couldn't have ..." She began and added to herself, 'I wouldn't have because by the gods, I loved him, too.' Tears welled up in her eyes as Filia was finally able to admit her feelings to herself and it was too late.
Marcus took over as he sensed Xeria about to boil over.
"From what we understand, your one night stand with him was enough for your light magic to infect him. It slowly killed him. He imparted the last of his dark power to us so we now serve Ju-ou-sama in his place. Personally, I have to thank you for being an idiot, Fal. If you weren't, I probably wouldn't be as powerful as I am today. I think this power was meant for you."
Filia was shocked into silence, but Fal wasn't.
"I wouldn't have accepted it anyway." He replied.
"You're not worthy of it! But now onto your message." Xeria allowed herself an angry retort before calming herself again.
"I don't care to hear it." Fal replied rudely. Surprisingly, Filia spoke up before Xeria or Marcus could.
"Fal, these are your father's final words. I understand your feelings, but be respectful."
Fal made a humph noise and crossed his arms. Xeria rolled her eyes and began reading.
"To my son, Fal, I was excited to meet you again. You've grown so well. Filia did a great job. You're intelligent and your Mazoku power has a lot of potential, despite how deep it's buried. However, the sense I got when you were here is that you would never allow that power out so it saddens me that you probably wouldn't accept your birthright that I would offer you. Despite all that, please know that I am proud to call you my son. Farewell."
Xeria stopped reading and looked at Fal's expression. He had the same bored face that he had on before she read the note. She was furious and noticed something odd.
"Please Xeria, may I take the note for Fal. I'll keep it safe, I swear it." Filia pleaded.
Xeria didn't speak or look in her direction, but handed over her father's final message. She kept staring at Fal.
'What is that?" She asked herself. She could vaguely hear Marcus speaking.
"Well, mission accomplished so I guess we need to report to Ju-ou-sama. Xeria, are you okay?" He asked when he noticed how quiet she was.
Xeria was transfixed on Fal. There was a big red light emanating from his chest that she couldn't identify. Then it came to her. She knew what it was and what she had to do.
"Take heart, Father, it seems Fal is destined to be a part of your legacy after all." She said cryptically and lunged at Fal faster than anyone expected. Even Marcus was thrown off. Fal screamed in pain, causing Faranth, Lauria and Milgazia to come running back in the room. They were horrified to witness Marcus looking shocked, Filia on the ground holding Fal's bloody body and Xeria laughing manically while holding Fal's bloody heart in her hands. Milgazia jumped to attack, but Marcus blocked him. So Milgazia drew a sword.
"Back off Marcus, this was not a part of the agreement." He threatened.
"Maybe not, and frankly I have no clue what's going on, but I imagine she has a method to her madness so all I can do is support her. Oh, I have a sword, too. Yami o!" He called and the Sword of Darkness roared to life, easily knocking Milgazia and his sword back against the wall. Xeria was too preoccupied to watch, however. She started to cast a spell.
"Crimson blood that nurtures life is shed in death. The purity of a dragon's heart is corrupted into chaos. Demonic powers gather within me and give this form!" Xeria chanted.
As she finished, Fal's heart twisted and turned into a bright red jewel that fit perfectly into her staff. She brandished it proudly, sending a powerful wave of dark magic through the whole room.
"Ready to go?" Marcus asked.
"Yes, quite ready." Xeria replied.
As they turned to go, Lauria ran up to Marcus and grabbed his hand.
"Marcus, don't go with her! She killed Fal in cold blood! She's evil! You don't have to do this!" She pleaded.
"Sweet Lauria, I know you had strong feelings for Fal. Now you'll be very sad. Despite what you might believe, I still love you, sister and it pains me to think about you being sad. Find someone else, okay?" He said and tried to walk away, but she clung to him.
"There will never be anyone else but Fal! Please Marcus, I can't lose you, too! You're not evil! Don't go!" She cried.
Xeria watched Marcus quietly, just maintaining a barrier to keep the other dragons out.
"Lauria, I wish you didn't push the issue. Fal made a choice so has Xeria. Perhaps it's time for me to choose a side, too." With that, Marcus picked up his sister by the neck and with one flick of his wrist, he snapped it, killing her instantly.
Faranth screamed and collapsed to the floor, comforted by Filia. Xeria opened both eyes, a bit shocked. Marcus turned to her, grabbed her hand and teleported them back to Wolf Pack Island, leaving the dragon temple in depressing ruin.
Wolf Pack Island
"So that's all, Ju-ou-sama. We completed our mission and I created the jewel for my staff." Xeria explained as she and Marcus bowed on one knee before Xellass.
The Beastmaster took a sip of wine before she spoke.
"Excellent work on your first mission. I hope you enjoyed yourselves. You both may retire to your quarters, Xeria. You can stay there or go wander about, whatever when I don't have need of you. I'll call if I do." Xellass explained and waved them away.
With one final bow, Xeria led Marcus to what would now be their quarters.
"It's big enough for both of us I think." She commented lightly.
Marcus was deathly quiet and had been since they returned. He had his back to her but he was shaking. Xeria approached him slowly.
"Marcus..." She said briefly before he collapsed to the floor in tears.
"What kind of a monster am I, Xeria? I killed her! I really killed Lauria! Why did I do that? How could I? What have I done to myself? What have I become?!" He cried helplessly as Xeria dropped to her knees and held him. She glanced at the jewel in her staff and came to a realization of what she did this day as well. Marcus noticed her shaking and looked to see that she was also crying.
"And I killed Fal. I made his heart into a jewel! I'm a monster, too, Marcus! I just lost it! We bit off more than we can chew and it's too late now!" She cried.
"What do we do?' He asked.
"There's nothing we can do. We can't show weakness out there! We'll be killed!" She reasoned.
"Are we safe in here?" He asked.
"I think so. Then this can be our sanctuary. We'll wear masks as my father did. This will be our secret." Xeria suggested.
Marcus nodded in agreement.
In her throne room, Xellass could sense the raging guilt from her servants and smiled.
"Yes, Xelloss, my plan worked out perfectly fine. Thank you. Rest well, my loyal servant." She spoke aloud before relishing in their agony some more.
