Reviving Love
Another musical inspiration and inspired by "Truth".
"Clark…" Wonder Woman whispered.
He lay next to her barely breathing.
"Clark…"
She could barely move.
They were in the middle of a remote field. Blood and bruises all over their bodies. They weren't healing fast enough.
"Di…ana?"
"I'm right here…"
He moved his arm slowly to reach out for her. He touched her hand. Diana took hold as they interlocked fingers.
Are we to die now? So much left unsaid. Wishing so much wasn't said. Filled with so much regret.
He told her not to act like his shield. Not to worry about him in fights. But she couldn't help it. He wasn't at full power and hasn't been for weeks. Clark just wouldn't accept it. He wouldn't let her take that risk for him.
He just wanted her to be protected as well. Man's pride may have played a very large role in Clark's unreasonable coldness and anger towards her. That's no excuse. He shouldn't have done it. He shouldn't have hurt her that way. He should have never hurt her at all. As much as she had done for him, she didn't deserve that sort of treatment.
She wasn't going to put up with it. He needed her more than ever. No matter how hard he tried to push her away, the look in his eyes told the truth. So that's why she stayed by his side. But truly it didn't change the fact that she was heartbroken.
Relationships are sometimes complicated. Love is a challenge. Though, when the love is real, it is worth fighting for and never to give up so easily. The harder the fight, the stronger the love and bond becomes. No one should let unnecessary bullshit get in the way of what is meant to be.
Always lurking in the shadows of hate, fear, and jealousy are those who don't want couples to make it.
From the looks of it, it seemed Clark and Diana weren't going to make it. They were broken physically and emotionally.
But here now, hand in hand, they couldn't give up. They couldn't give up on life. They couldn't give up on love. Deep inside of them the love was still there.
Clark turned his head slightly so he could see her.
How it pained him to see this way. It was all his fault.
Diana turned her head to look at him. Tears were forming in her eyes but she held back.
She felt his pulse while holding his hand. They were both still breathing. Weakened hearts are still beating.
Of course they still loved each other...deeply. They had a chance, if only a slight chance, to survive.
They were supposed to do this together. Protect each other. It didn't make any sense otherwise if that what they are suppose to do. It wasn't getting in the way of their jobs as heroes to protect others.
2 Weeks Before
Lying in bed, Diana was wrapped up in her thoughts of the strong connection she still had with Clark. She could feel his spirit close to her. Just as Clark felt the same, lying in his hotel bed.
Clark sighed realizing just how bad he messed up. Diana would've been right there. She watched him sleep and with at that moment he felt peace. But now she wasn't and he was alone. They were both alone, staring at the empty space on the other side of their beds.
They didn't know when or even if that space would ever be filled again.
He got up and went into the bathroom. Splashed water on his face, he looked up staring at himself in the mirror. Clark sighed heavily. Each day he was filled with more and more regret. He tried to block everything out of his mind but he couldn't. Clark couldn't get the image of her facial expression out of his head. The hurt in her eyes was unbearable.
He was full of anger and he had no one to blame but himself. He was acting like a true ungrateful jack-ass. Any man would be proud to have a woman like Diana but he took advantage of that. He took it so lightly and was willing to easily throw it all away.
What made it so much harder was that they had to pretend nothing was wrong and continue to…at least try be professional. Ignore questions. Ignore the awkwardness. No matter what they still made one hell of a team together, still in sync with each other.
That couldn't stop the question, if they were still so much in sync, why the hell are they going through this. Hurting themselves this way, distancing themselves, not talking this out? Because the painful truth was, they were afraid it might not work out.
Diana closed her eyes letting the warm water of the shower run down her body. She imagined Clark there with her. His strong arms wrapped around her. She opened herself to him...something she never thought she could or even would do.
Diana should really not care for him after what he did. Be cold to him as he was to her. But something wouldn't let her. Something would not let her treat him that way and that something finally spoke up. Diana pondered, would she be willing to give him another chance and forgive him. Just like any other person, they make mistakes and Diana knows people learn from it. She was in love with him. She wasn't being naive or blind, though. She knew him, his intentions and most importantly his heart.
Shaking her head in disbelief, how could she let it happen? Why did she let it happen? She fell in love. Damn it. Why?
They still lay there on the ground, silent for a brief moment. They were exhausted and their bodies still in pain but a bit more stable.
Maybe still it's no use. They can try everything and nothing can be done. This could be the hardest challenge of their relationship and they failed.
Or did they?
They stared into each other's eyes.
"You aren't going to die, Clark. I won't let you."
"I already have, Diana."
She frowned. "What does that suppose to mean?"
"I hurt you. The moment I did that, the moment I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I lost a part of me and eventually I lost all of me."
Diana didn't respond. She looked back up at the sky.
"Why did you still stay?"
"You know why. We are still a team."
"That's it?"
"What else do you want me to say?"
Silence.
Diana let his hand go but Clark grabbed hers again and held on a little tighter.
"Don't do that."
"Don't do what, Clark?"
Silence. Yet they still held on to each other's hand.
Diana turned her head again to see Clark still staring at her.
She sat up slowly. "I have enough energy now to fly and get you help. We should go."
"No."
"No?"
Clark used the little energy he had to move closer to her, lay his head on her lap and closed his eyes.
"What are you doing?
"Can we just stay like this?"
"Clark…we need to go."
"Please, Diana."
Diana was a bit hesitant but too tired to argue. She slowly and gently caressed his face. "Ok…"
A Month Later : Clark's hotel room
Both of them knew within lies a ray of hope. It was slim but it was still there. They've been through too much hell to just completely throw this all away.
I'm sorry, Diana" Clark said.
He had spent the last month trying his best to show he truly meant it.
"This isn't easy…"
Clark sighed. "I know. But what we have means something and… "
Diana snapped. "You are just now realizing that? Of course it means something! You are the one that has been acting like it's nothing!"
"I know. Diana, I don't want to argue."
"Neither do I."
Clark frowned and sighed again. He just didn't know what say. She would just snap back at everything.
Diana had put up a wall just like he did. Of course he couldn't blame her or get mad. He was getting what he rightly deserved.
"I know I hurt you. I took my anger and frustration out on you. I lied to you. I know you deserve so much better than me, the way I treated you, but I still love you. Please, tell me you love me too, even though you have all rights to rip my heart out. You have all the right to curse at me. You have all the right to walk away from me…from us. I know I deserve that but I would rather be with you."
Diana just looked at him. She said nothing.
Clark was having an emotional breakdown inside. His heart was shattering. He needed her to say something.
"Diana?"
"Is there anything else you would like to tell me?" she asked.
"Well there was one other thing."
"Which is?"
Clark stepped closer to Diana and didn't make eye contact with her when he spoke.
"I want to kiss you."
Diana was hesitant. "What?"
"I just feel that I need to do the right thing."
Clark lightly kissed her and pulled back. He still didn't look in her eyes.
"Ok. If you want to leave now, I understand."
He turned away from her. If she did walk out the door, he didn't want to see.
"I'm not leaving," Diana said.
He looked back at her, surprised.
Diana stepped closer so she would be right in front of him. He had no choice but to look at her.
She pressed up against him and then she kissed him. Clark moved his arms around her waist, deepening the kiss. When they broke away, Clark smiled feeling a bit of relief.
I missed that. I missed us. I missed you, Diana. I love you."
"I love you, too."
Clark pulled her back closer to him in a loving embrace. They held each other so tight, it seemed like they were inseparable.
Clark kissed her again with such adoration that Diana found herself responding in much the same way. It was spectacular and breathtaking all at once and all they wanted to do was be close with each other again.
There was still a lot of pain. They had lost a lot of love they had built. But they could do it. They could rebuild and revive. No matter what anyone had to say, it wasn't over. It was far from over. They would do whatever it takes to get back to love.
