REWRITING YOUR FATE: The Epic of Emiya Shirou.

-Reforge II: Let the curtain rise-

Yagami Yuuko was a woman with normal concerns.

A smart use of money so her family could to keep their current lifestyle as well as saving for something especial, be it a needed item for their home or something else like an outing.

Improving her cooking skills, so she could one day surprise her family and finally defeat her eldest son (and one day she would, believe her). Even if she needed to ask help from the self-proclaimed master of the kitchen from time to time, much to her embarrassment.

Making sure that work and school did not keep any of them from spending time together, even if it was mostly just dosing around and enjoying their meals as a family.

And of course, she worried about her family's health. Not only the physical health, but also when they felt in pain or stress, when they had problems they could not easily deal with on their everyday.

This was especially truth when it came to her son and daughter, with Taichi being a cause of constant worry since the moment of his birth.

Her eldest came into the world as most normal babies did, crying and in the embrace of his mother. However, it was his eyes that caught her attention and breath.

They were dull.

Eyes that should have been shining with surprise and curiosity were instead lacking any light of sort. They regarded her, and at the same time they didn't.

She had been so scared by those eyes that she had asked the doctors to check if her son had been born blind. The confirmation that he was pretty much in perfect condition for a newborn didn't erase her worries.

As the first years went by, they only grew.

Taichi was not a normal kid.

For a baby he had always been very quiet, only crying in fright from time to time in the middle of his sleep, and even then he had stopped after a few days, making her concerned about the lack of screaming.

It took her and her husband a week to realize that the baby was avoiding crying unless he felt hungry or needed a change of diapers.

In addition, Taichi showed no interest in any toy of sort and instead appeared to prefer listening to them speaking about different things, when he didn't busy himself staring at the horizon. As he grew up, he learned how to walk and speak way earlier than was expected from most kids, showing to be very intelligent to the point of making everyone around him believe he was some kind of boy genius.

However, Taichi always seemed to be in his own world. Only learning what was necessary, asking for random places and people and even going as far as asking other people about those. He was never interested in going to special schools or meeting tutors of any sort, always doing his best to dismiss those suggestions without appearing to be arrogant or ungrateful. It seemed as if he found no appeal in showing off or even improving his "genius", unless it was about cooking. As if he had enough with following the same routine.

And yet, until his 4th birthday, those same eyes devoid of life stared at them from morning to night.

Until then Yuuko's concern had been slowly turning into fear and guilt, and she was not alone in this. Even Susumu had noticed the lack of interest in their son for anything that was not related to helping them or someone else, only talking with other kids when addressed.

Worse of all, he never called them "mommy" or "daddy" or anything of the sort. Taichi had always remained formal and polite, smiling honestly and yet still refusing to cross that line. To be referred by her own son as if she was just someone else in charge of him made her feel hurt, and she had the impression that even Taichi was aware but he didn't' do it out of malice.

So many things she could not understand about her son, she was beginning to feel she had failed as a mother. She had even considered calling professional help to deal with the situation.

But then, when he was 4 years old, his sister was born.

While Taichi had been very caring despite his age after it was confirmed she was pregnant, he had been adamant in remaining close to her room the day she went into labor.

And then, when Susumu had asked him to get close and hold his sister's tiny hand in his own, she had caught her breath once again.

It was only a small change, and they certainly lacked the brightness of any normal kid his age, but light had entered into the eyes of Yagami Taichi for the first time since his birth.

At that moment she had been unable to contain herself and used her free arm to embrace her eldest with all her might, fueled by the desire to make up for all the time lost, for all the time they had been but strangers living under the same roof.

Susumu had joined not too long after, and the whole group, newborn included, had shared their first true moment as a family.

At that moment she had found her answer and decided the best name she could think for their daughter.

Hikari, the one who showed her the path to finally cross the many bridges that separated them from their son. The Light who shined into Taichi's eyes for the first time in years.

Despite the miracle of Hikari's birth, however, her son still remained focus on being useful before having fun. He still used the more respectful honorifics when talking to his parents, but it seemed he was making the effort to be part of the family and actually started joining in the fun so long as Hikari was involved. He even showed a more playful and perhaps devious side of him in occasions, reminding her of her younger days.

Really, she had wondered if Taichi would eventually become a siscon with how much he was willing to concede when it came to his sister.

Taichi only did as was necessary in schoolwork, only showing a change in efforts when it came to sports. At his father's insistence, and of course that of his teachers, he had ended up taking part in football/soccer and done pretty well, but it was not enough to keep him in there for long.

Her son seemed content with hanging around with their neighbor, Izumi Koushiro, who she was thankful for becoming his very first friend. A sentiment that Koushiro's mother shared as well.

Koushiro, Hikari, Susumu, and even herself, had successfully made some ground into making Taichi open up, but he still seemed to fall into depressing moments often, as if their influence only made him forget of something terrible and he remembered in his solitude. And this impasse had remained for the next 4 years since the birth of her daughter, until the events the terrorist attack next to their old apartment complex.

Whatever happened ended with both siblings outside of their house, still wearing their pajamas and talking nonsense about monsters.

By the end of the next week, they had officially moved into Odaiba, alongside many former residents of Highton View Terrace who she was friends with or would eventually befriend, like the Izumi and the Takenouchi.

But since that night, Taichi had gone through another profound change of sorts.

And she couldn't make her mind whether to feel happy or concerned about him.

For his eyes now burned brighter than before and he seemed to carry within him an energy and drive that no even the birth of his sister had managed to accomplish.

But at the same time, in spite of new friends like Sora and this new fire in his eyes, he seemed to have acquired a new kind of obsession that only he knew about and was not willing to share.

Another arrow struck true.

It had been the 4th to hit the center of the target, out of 12; and the other eight had been aimed as close to the center as possible, to avoid damaging the equipment by putting them one trough the other.

To anyone observing, it was ridiculous to have such accuracy.

For Yagami Taichi, his tempo between shots had not been fast enough. He didn't need to become as good as Emiya Shirou when he was the best archer at Homurahara Archery Club.

He was aiming to surpass his best shots when he was using the black bow and firing Broken Phantasms.

Of course, he no longer has such bow with him.

Another arrow was knocked into the bow and again he repeated the steps he had gone through since his old days, turning a set outcome into reality.

He let loose the arrow.

And the bow on his hands made a strange sound.

As the arrow stuck on the target, slightly off center, Taichi was reminded of his current situation.

This was the limit in ability with his current self and the current tools at disposal.

Even if he had ben reincarnated with his knowledge and memories, he could not access his magic circuits. No, more likely, he didn't have magic circuits at all this time, and he had been unable to even try his old reckless method of creating temporal circuits through his nerves.

He had tried with other forms of mystery like Runes and Formalcraft, even Houjutsu, but he had been unsuccessful in any of his experiments during the four years since the encounter with the mysterious creatures.

And this was a serious problem.

He was no natural born warrior, ad he didn't have access to the ways to eventually reach the levels of the Deva from Kawakami, so he was stuck at the limits of his current human body.

No Noble Phantasms, no Reinforcement or Alteration, no support from magical contracts or any combination of magical formulas from mixed rituals. And no legendary artifacts.

He was unable to perform any sort of mystery, making him weaker than before he entered into the Holy Grail War. On the other hand, whatever abilities the denizens of the supernatural possessed he couldn't be sure.

And this time he was completely alone.

He had accepted years ago that none of his old comrades and lovers had entered into this world, and there was no way to prove they even existed in here in the first place. Without friends empowered by mysteries and skill to push forward or to provide back up, he was stuck at preparing for the unknown as much as a lone human could.

Because as far as his experience went, anyone entering into the world beyond human common sense would never be able to escape from it.

And he had someone else to protect from the dangers to come.

So he used the only real tool he had at his disposal: his already mentioned experience.

Which was why he kept on practicing in the small Kyudo club, regardless of the distance between his current self and the ideal self he sought.

However, …

"I would say that the bow and the target have both taken enough punishment, Taichi".

Taking a deep breath, he allowed himself to relax and regarded the one speaking to him.

Short, auburn hair and brown eyes accompanied a smile filled with confidence.

There was once someone with those eyes and smile, only her hair was brown.

There was once another with similar eyes and smile, only her hair was longer, dyed in a reddish brown.

The kind of character not bothered to look feminine, instead behaving and handling herself like a tomboy. A fan of sports before dolls, of adventure before tradition.

And similar to him, someone with the tendency to look out for others.

"Hello to you as well, Sora. Have you been waiting for too long?".

Takenouchi Sora, a neighbor when they both lived in the old apartment complex and now the most recent addition to his very short list of friends in this world. Before moving out into their new homes, their interactions were very brief, and it had been his new drive and interest for sports and exercise that allowed them to find a common ground of sorts.

At the time, Shirou had returned to Odaiba's Elementary School with the motivation to explore those clubs that could help him build up a much better physical state as well as some of the old skills that had been useful in his past life, like archery. As always, Izzy had joined him in his daily search, more because of curiosity than actual interest in sports.

Sadly, he had been unable to join any club then, due to school regulations. However, as they were making their way out of the archery dojo, they were almost run down by a fast moving object that barely managed to stop itself on time.

Said object happened to be a girl holding a soccer ball and looking at them with big eyes filled with expectation.

She had then asked them to join her team for a game, since they needed two more members to complete the team for a game against another class. By asking, Taichi meant that the girl in question pretty much demanded/pleaded in high voice and excitement.

Looking at one another, the boys chose to go along with her (even the non-sportsman Izzy).

And it had been through this surprise recruitment and the later game that the two companions became three, with Sora tagging along in most of their breaks between classes and even asking to visit so they could do their homework together.

It also happened to be thanks to Sora that Taichi actually engaged into other activities that were not related to his goals, even going as far as making Izzy and him members of the Soccer Club, when they were finally allowed to do extracurricular activities.

While Taichi would have preferred to focus his time on the archery dojo, he ended up surrendering again to Sora's stubbornness. Really, he shouldn't be so weak against little kids considering he was mentally an old man, but…

… he was reminded of another friend of his, one who had found a hobby of hers to persist in getting him back into their old archery club. A friend he eventually grew distant from, only spending a good deal of time with her in the night everything went to hell on earth.

And then she was gone.

And by the end of his journey, he had come to value the time he spent in the company of people he cared for, and he wanted to cherish these moments of peace with his new friends.

Therefore, both for her sake and for his own desires, he agreed. On the condition that she would help him find a place for practicing Kyudo.

Just like that, it became a common thing for Taichi and Izzy to take part in their new friend's hobby, while the latter two would pay a visit to the first at the last minutes of his own practice.

Just like now.

"Don't fret over it, knucklehead. It wasn't really that long and is not like we are the only people in the dojo. Izzy and your sensei are both here as well,"- she replied dismissing his concern with a wave of her hand, - "are you done with your practice?".

"I think so, but I may have overdone it with the equipment" –Taichi said while scratching his neck with his right arm. He then turned to the elder in the room and offered a bow in sign of apology -Hida-sensei, I'm very sorry for mishandling the Yumi you found for me. I will find a way to make up for the damage on it."

Imitating Sora, the old man also waved away the issue. – "You certainly did a number on it, but don't feel guilty; all equipment in a dojo is bound to be replaced at one point, you just made sure we needed a new one in record time" -he smiled teasingly but with kindness. – "Unfortunately, it will be a while before we can see each other for a new training session, but I promise I will have a new Yumi ready for your kind of treatment".

At this, Taichi grimaced slightly, remembering the recent tragedy that had befallen the family of the man who had become his master of sorts in martial arts. About a week ago, the Hida family had been notified that the son of his master, Hiroki, had died protecting an important government officer from a bullet. In a couple of days, the family of three would be taking a flight to London to retrieve his remains and give him a proper burial at his birth country.

Taichi met the man from time to time since he had begun his training sessions under the eldest Hida and had found him a bright character filled with conviction for his duty as well as love for his family. The fact that he had died while protecting another only strengthened his respect for the police officer, even if it was still unfair that such a good man had been killed and his family left in pain.

To show his sympathies for the family as a whole he had offered to either to assist in any way for the funeral or to stop visiting for the time being, but his master had politely declined and insisted they had a last session before his departure, nevertheless thanking him for the act of kindness. And now training was over.

Abouy 15 minutes later, Tai was changed into his casual clothes, the uniform he wore in the dojo stored inside his bag. Izzy an Sora at his side, he made another bow to the old man, this one simpler and meant to bid farewell.

"I hope to see you on good health after Summer camp, master. Please give my regards to Iori and Ms. Yumiko".

Smiling, Hida Chikara replied with more enthusiasm.

"I also hope to see you again in good health and under better circumstances, young man. Be sure to have some fun with your friends and all the people you will meet while out of town, I know how much you tend to miss fun without those two at your side. You will make sure he plays a lot, right?"- the last part had been directed to his friends, who smiled in mischief.

"I promise, master Hida!"

"So do I!"

Rolling his eyes, Yagami Taichi made his way out of the building, his two friends in tow.

He didn't know it would be more than a month before they could visit the dojo once more.

After seeing the three children enter into the car of one of their parents, Hida Chikara allowed himself to release a deep sigh.

Hours later, when his daughter-in-law and son arrived he was still quietly contemplating.

"Father, it is not my place to question how you handle your students, but may I ask why you insisted in having him today?"- asked the first of the arrivals, not out of malice but in honest curiosity, while offering him some tea.

Taking the treat and thanking her for it, he took a seat in the living room and mulled how to answer while drinking.

A long sip later, he did.

"Fumiko, what do you see when Taichi comes for training?"- He observed his daughter-in-law blinking and ponder the question brefly before giving her own reply.

"He is a very hardworking kid, very polite as well. He is very nice to Iori and both of us as well, and has even helped with cooking a time or two. He is surprisingly good with that"-she said the last part with a small smile, a rare occurrence in the last days since she found out about her husband's death.

"That is true. But the few times you have seen him in the dojo, what did you see?" – he asked, changing his first inquiry to make his point.

"As I said, a very hardworking kid, dedicated and responsible for his age. And he still understood that we are going through a hard situation and offered not to come out of respect. Yet, you still insisted on one last meeting."

Listening to her, Chikara closed his eyes in reminiscence and repeated her words.

"Hardworking, committed and responsible. Let's add polite and helpful as well given his willingness to provide assistance in cooking on those days his training was at midday or late hours. But what else?"

Fumiko spent half a minute trying to think on something else, but could come with nothing. Chikara continued.

"I knew about the hobbies of my son, and actually argued with him about them. I know about what little Iori likes and dislikes. My son and other students faltered when my training became too hard, even if they eventually found the motivation to keep going. And I myself had my ups and downs and bickered and hesitated when it came to my own training, during my childhood.

But when has Taichi done any of this? When has he complained about missing a hit or a shot during training, or even about feeling tired? When has he tried making small talk about himself instead of his family or friends?

Why is a boy of 12 so focused on archery in the first place, and behaving like that?

I have met his parents and his sister and I have even spoken with his two friends, so I know his life should be a happy one…"

He stopped talking for a moment, allowing Fumiko to catch up and make her own judgement before finishing his words.

"…so why is he treating his training like a duty instead of a hobby? What is he aiming for that lies beyond the target of his arrows or the old man who acts as a master and opponent during sparring?

And why does a 12-year-old boy have the eyes that I have only seen in those soldiers that fought during the war against the Americans?"

Opening his eyes, he could see that this time his words had the expected effect, and Fumiko's wide eyed stare and open mouth were enough to tell him that she could not believe what she just heard.

"When Taichi is training, he is here, and at the same time somewhere else. Some dark place that no child should ever be, yet he enters there nonetheless. It is only when any of us decides to step in that he returns to our side. Before that, I can see not a boy having fun but someone who strives for surpassing something, never making a fuss of his achievements. And today I realized a truth.

Taichi is not asking me to lend him my dojo and training because he idolizes heroic tales or martial arts, or even out of insistence from his parents. He is preparing for something, something that he refuses to share with anyone else and that at times seems to consume him when he is focused the most.

As someone he willingly calls master, I cannot simply ignore this situation. Since his training is related to his burden, I will keep playing my part until he is ready to talk about it. And today, I felt it was important to see him before we departed to claim my son's remains."

"…and why is that, father?"- Fumiko replied in a quiet voice, looking herself unsure of what to make of his words.

"Because my gut is telling me he will be gone for longer than he or I expect, and his return will show me a much different side of him. And I want to be able to remember the boy with focus yet capable of giving an honest smile when in the company of his friends and family."

His daughter-in-law had no reply for that statement, and simply chose to remain in silence.

August 1st, the year is 1999.

Izzy was bored.

More accurately, he was annoyed because he had remembered bringing his computer for the summer camp, but his bet on having access to internet had not paid off.

Seriously though, what's going on? I know we are quite away from urban centers but at the very least I should get access through other ways. Pity I'm not a master of hacking satellites or stuff like that.

And so, he was trying in futility to get his device to achieve the impossible, seated on the floor of the small temple around which he had set camp, along his two friends and some other kids that happened to be partnered with them.

Speaking of his friends, Sora seemed to be content with getting to know their assigned place, having yet to initiate any conversation with any of the other companions in their group.

Meanwhile, Taichi was perched on the upper branches of the tallest tree nearby. From time to time he directed his eyes to the rest of the group, including them both, but his main focus so far had been the landscape around them, and the sky above. In fact, Izzy had started his frustrating effort to connect to some network due to his friend's request to get a map on their location.

Five more minutes and he decided enough was enough. Closing his computer and safely putting all of its equipment inside his backpack, he got up and made his way to his male friend.

Once next to the tree, he spoke.

"Tai, I'm sorry to say I couldn't get my computer connected to the web. So no maps for now".

The older kid continued watching the sky, but nevertheless answered. - "Don't beat yourself over it Izzy. I only asked you that out of my own sense of paranoia. I do not like arriving at new places with no idea of where things are in case something happens."

Izzy raised an eyebrow at that.

Since he became friends with Taichi, he had been able to identify some particular "quirks" that made him stand outside of most kids of their age. There was his natural drive to offer his help and assistance to anyone that may require it, be it small or even big things. His great degree of knowledge, to the point that he understood a lot of ideas and concepts only known to adults, and which he shared with him from time to time during their conversations. His dedication to training, particularly in Kyudo and Kendo.

And finally, a great degree of paranoia, as he himself admitted. After the incident that had them all moving out from their old apartment complex, his friend had become very interested in knowing about any uncommon happening in Tokyo, and even other parts of their country. His desire to know even went as far as looking for maps of Odaiba, their old living place, and many other districts in Tokyo.

Izzy was not one to question thirst for knowledge, but he could easily focus himself in learning more since it was pretty much his hobby. Taichi, on the other hand, spent time with him and Sora inside and outside of the Soccer Club, practicing martial arts at the Hida Dojo, and even with his family, especially with his little sister; so he had asked many times when did his friend get time to sleep between all this.

'I will be able to sleep more easily when I understand enough of where I stand, so neither you or me get caught unprepared in something unexpected. Heh, maybe I should just forget about sleeping altogether.'

That had been his answer, filled with some mirth as well as a strange smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. It had sounded as if he was stating a fact more than a joke.

Concerned by this possibility, he had offered his own help with the issue of knowledge, remaining steadfast in his proposal in spite of Taichi's assurance that there was no need to make use of his own time to deal with the older boy's obsession.

Therefore, out of concern and curiosity he decided to pry further.

"Something like what?"

The reply came almost immediately, with the sudden drop of the summer's heat, and the first drops of snow falling on them both.

"Like this".

And then the wind started blowing. First like a calm breeze, but then gaining strength at an unusually fast rate.

"Taichi, Izzy!"- they heard their other friend calling to them. Taichi wisely decided to get down from the tree before the wind got too strong, and after recovering from his jump he joined Izzy in reuniting with Sora.

It was then that things got quite crazy.

The snowfall turned into a raging blizzard and everyone in their small camp was forced to look for shelter inside the temple.

Then just as quickly as it came, the storm was gone.

Minutes passed before Tai and the oldest kid, Joe if he recalled, both took the initiative of going outside. When nothing seemed to happen, the others followed.

And as most of the kids, even Sora, were marveling and even playing in the snow covered fields, Joe was busy wondering where the teacher in charge of their group had gone, while Taichi and Izzy himself where openly asking themselves how something like this happened.

And then the northern lights showed themselves on the blue sky, according to Sora. Only, as far as he knew, it made no sense at all for this phenomenon to take place under the current circumstances.

Taking a look at his oldest friend, Izzy saw him narrowing his eyes. His face set on a scowl, while he proceeded to look at the sky lights with the help of his silver monocular. Moments later…

"Izzy, Sora get everyone inside now! Those are no mere lights, something is falling very close to where we are standing right now!"

Surprised by the command, Izzy and Sora didn't react right away and by the time the mysterious objects could be seen very close, their friend was dragging them both by their arms, followed by the other kids who in panic realized the danger.

They didn't get too far before the field behind them was bombarded by the falling objects, resulting in kids screaming in fright and falling on the snow.

Again, mere minutes passed since the new development, and someone suggested abandoning the place to look for the way back into the bus station, which created a brief but heated debate about what to do.

Joe and Tai had been in favor of staying, although for different reasons, while a girl dressed in pink and wearing a hat sided with the idea of moving out in case weirder stuff happened. Joe believed they should wait for the adults to come and pick them up since they were more capable and experienced, while Tai argued that the risk of another storm made it too risky trying to move with no cover or sight into unknown terrain.

But it seemed weird was not over for them, since the very spots where the objects fell from the sky started shinning.

Everyone stopped what they were doing, including him, and focused on the small things slowly floating to them.

Many started reaching as if entranced.

"Wait don't touch-"- but his friend was too late, as everyone and Izzy had already grabbed the mysterious things in their hands.

"What are these?"

"Looks like a small video console"

"Maybe it's a new cellphone model?"

"Out of the sky, really?"

"Maybe it was aliens, big bro"

"I don't know, TK…"

"Everyone, we don't know what those are. Maybe we should leave them were they were".

All the kids were commenting aloud about the unknown devices in their hands, but Izzy could see that Taichi had yet to grab his.

In fact, he was looking with a grimace at the still floating object shining in orange light.

His friend took a glance at him and Sora, then at the rest of the kids, and for some reason he clenched a fist. Finally, he released the fist and used that same hand to grab the device.

"Whatever happens, I'm not abandoning you to some stupid war or adventure. I'm just glad Hikari is not here."

Izzy would have asked about what he meant by those words, but he had better things to do at the moment.

Like gawking at the last development of the crazy weather, a huge blue wave coming out of nowhere and right at them.

Once again everyone screamed, but this time they found themselves surpassed in speed and the water dragged them into the unknown.

Before losing consciousness, Izzy could barely see Tai trying to grab onto him and Sora, to no avail.

And then only blackness.

A/N: Hello there everyone. As you can see I have sent our characters into the Digital World. Again, no action and instead more character exploration. I tried to get the supporting cast involved early since the way this Shirou/Taichi behaves is simply unnatural for most adults when they think of a normal kid. Even Izzy is aware that Tai has personality traits that make him different from most, while Sora is basically the Ayako for Digimon (only much more successful).

Since I will focus on my thesis for the time being, there will be no immediate updates. But I will answer your questions related to the story if you have them.

Hope you enjoy.
