Chapter 12: Watcher's Tales
A few days before:
"Sookie! SOOK! Wait up." Nexie chased after Sookie who bolted down the hallway after Barry. She ran as quickly as she could but Sookie seemed to leave her in the dust. Nexie looked around, looking down each aisle of the various hallways, she saw and heard nothing but quietness and emptiness. "SHIT!" She muttered to herself.
'Poor bellhop. Sookie must be chewing his ear off.' Nexie shook her head and made her way back to the hotel room. She walked through the windowless parts of the hotel only seeing red walls and black carpet. She watched as a human donor walked past her in a daze like state completely lost and in pure bliss.
The mermaid found her room and slid the key card through entering the room. She closed it, walking past the living area she opened the bedroom door and collapsed on the bed. She checked her phone to find a new text message from Pam. She replied before lying fully down on her back. She inhaled deeply, sighing she turned to look over at Eric. She drank in his beautifully sculpted face, his chiseled jawline and beautifully shaped lips; she smiled at his beauty. She curled closer to the man that laid beside her hoping that, that moment would forever stay the same.
Alana sat at the bar at Merrlote's staring at the patrons. As she waited for Sam, she took a long sip of her water. At that exact moment her eyes lied upon one booth in particular. She watched as a two women sat down and began to converse. She watched one of them in a peculiar way, the red head smiled broadly at her companion. As Daphne, Sam's fling thing, as Tara and Alana called it made her way towards them Alana turned away. She looked down at her drink, spinning the ice with in it captivated in a world of her own.
Flashback
"You cannot force me to do that! I am a girl, not some dog you can go off and command." Alana screamed. Lillian completely infuriated with her daughter raised her hand and glided it swiftly across the cheek of daughter. Alana's stance faltered, as she cupped her stricken cheek.
"You will do as I say. Or I will force you."
"You cannot and will not! I am under the King's protection as watcher, you have no power-"
"OH? I have no power? Oh my sweet child you must be mistaken. That "king" is my brother, I will do as I please. How do you think that poor excuse of a fat slob will react when he finds out that his niece, watcher of his kin, citizen of his realm, has refused the hand of his most noble subject." Alana watched as her mother began to circle her. "Do you think he will stand there and accept it? That he will turn his eye the other way as you plague the mind of his heir. I will most certainly not be disobeyed. He has met you, he wants you and you will be with him. Your sisters have done so, so why can't you!"
He mother gripped her throat, burning the insides. "Because I do not love him! I cannot nor will I." Her mother loosened her grip, backing away she stared at her daughter. She began to laugh menacingly.
She mocked Alana, "I can't love him! Oh my! I can't." Her eyes turned dark "Oh, and who is it you love? Is it that Godric? Is he the one." Lillian watched as Alana bowed her head. Lillian looked down not knowing what to say. It was as if she was like her father, the one who claimed to love Lillian and leave her for the same kind of creature Alana's heart belonged to. She couldn't make the man feel the same pain she endured.
"You honestly think he can love you?" Lillian spoke in a clam tone, "You honestly think the vampire, the same kind that has hunted for our blood will be there for you, to cherish you and care for you? Your father was a fool to go with them, I may not always tolerated your actions the way I should but, I never thought of you as this stupid. Tell me this Alana, when you want children, when you want to be held by your love in the sun, to share your cooking, and you know you cannot have that, will it be missed? Soon, he will find someone else, they are accustomed to that lifestyle because everyone around them dies, when he finds a beautiful redhead with a beautiful smile and fresh innocent blood, do you think he will stay with you, the same woman night after night, same look, same blood, same smile. A person who is used to change, will leave all that behind for a simple mermaid. We may be rare, we may be a breath of fresh air but how long can something interest you?"
Alana looked at her mother, for the first time she didn't look at Lillian as the cold vile woman she was. Alana saw her as a woman trying to help heal her own wounds before having another wound be bestowed upon another being. "He isn't like that. He's-"
"He is what Alana? He is different? Loving? Kind? They all are, but then reality sets in. Do not be as foolish as your father once was, he was a good man but broke under pressure. Godric isn't here, do not think he will leave his life, his child, his world behind for a woman across this vast ocean, if he truly wanted you, then where is he now?"
Lillian walked away from her daughter towards the front door. She turned the knob to open the door but, suddenly stopped, "A lot can happened with an ocean separating two beings. I may have not always been there for you but, I know I cannot stand here and watch you destroy yourself... I cannot."
With that Lillian opened the door and left the house. Alana stared at the wall across from her and sat on the floor rubbing the Thor's Hammer Godric had given her the last time they saw each other. "Maybe, just maybe she is right."
End of flashback
Alana was pulled out of her own world when Sam put his hand on her shoulder. The shifter nodded his head towards the his office, the two made their way back. As soon as Sam managed to shut the door she pulled something out of her back pocket and shoved it into Sam's hands.
He looked at her confused, she gestured him to open it. "Your credit card bill? Are you having trouble paying it, Al?"
She rolled her eyes, "No, I can keep up with my bills. This is Nexie's bill, it's jointed with my account."
"And you are showing me becau-" She quickly cut him off and pointed at something, "I am showing you because she lied to me Sam. She isn't in Mississippi, she is right there. She is right there in Dallas. See?"
He looked at the paper and read off the items that were purchased, "Razors, Wig, dress, flats- I don't get it. Why would she need this stuff? Dallas? Isn't that where..?" He stopped himself from saying the name knowing it would hurt Alana.
"Exactly my point. Godric lives in Dallas. She buys all these things for what? Is she spying on someone or something? She lied to me. Eric lied to me and now I find this? What am I suppose to do Sam?"
"Go look for her." Alana was taken back by his answer. She stared at him for a while not knowing if she was too stupid to realize she should have already thought that or if he was messing with her.
Sam seemed to notice her look and elaborated, "Look, you are her guardian am I right?" She nodded as he continued. "Come on Cher, your cousin lied to your face including Northman. She is in Dallas when she told you it was going to Mississippi. I don't know any other way to say this Chere, but she is either on the hunt for Godric which I doubt since Eric is with her or she is hiding something about Godric from you."
Alana looked down at the ground, she watched as Sam's feet moved towards her and soon she felt his arms wrap around her in a warm embrace. She missed these times with him. "What am I supposed to do? I can't just show up!" She said as her head was buried in his chest.
"It's the only way. If you want I could go with you. That is only if you want." She looked up at him and smiled, she wanted him to go but she knew he shouldn't leave Merlotte's.
Shaking her head she spoke softly, "No, I can't have you going there. Now that you have Daphne and Merlotte's, you can't just pick up and go this fast. It's okay I know exactly to call." He looked down at the mermaid, the one that he saw a little sister, the one he secretly swore to protect and in her eyes he saw a determined woman.
"Then, go get her and while you are there find Godric and drag back both of them so I can kick his ass for leaving you in the dust." Alana smiled at his protective side. She nodded, "Can I stay in here for a while it's pretty lonely at the house now since Diana and Nex aren't there. He nodded and kissed her lightly on the forehead before he walked out to leave.
"Don't forget what I said you go and get her back... and if you can give him a nice punch in the face for me I wouldn't mind." She chuckled lightly and nodded. He closed the door. She sat in his oversized seat and opened her phone, she took a deep breath and began to dial the number.
"Come on, pick up." As the phone rang, on the fourth ring a woman picked up the phone.
"Lillian Everdeen. Better be important."
"Mother?"
"Alana? Well, this is a surprise. What is it?"
You were right about Godric. What you told me before I left Greece about-"
"Yes, yes I remember exactly what happened. My question is what made you realize the truth."
"Let's just say I may have overlooked somethings. I need your help, I need to find him."
"Sounds lovely. I will see you tomorrow.
"Okay, Thank you. See you then.
"Until then."
Alana hung up the phone. She stared at her phone for a while wondering if summoning her mother was the wrong thing to do but, she knew desperate times called for desperate measures. If she was going to find Nexie and Godric she need the best tracker she knows and the one person with the most determined mindset. That was Lillian.
"Has the King heard of Nexie's little adventure?" Lillian asked as she entered the jet. Alana shook her heard, sighing Lillian looked at her daughter. "Well we got time to make a plan to get back the little rebel and the teen twilight vamp." Alana rolled her eyes at her mother and let out a soft chuckle. As the two talked of their plans, Alana reached out her connection with Nexie feeling her annoyance and fury. As her mother and her talked, Lillian pulled out a long wooden case.
"What is that?" Alana asked eying her mother curiously.
"Nexie's mirror."
"How did you get a hold of it? Even I didn't know where she hid it."
"That's because the one she has is the fake one." Her mother confessed.
A mermaid's mirror is the most sacred object one could posses. It contained their life, their powers, everything that makes them. As soon as the mirror shatters they mermaid dies. Mermaids were very protective of their mirrors she could only imagine what Nexie thinks of it.
"Does she-"
"No, and I intend to keep it that way until otherwise." Alana nodded at her mother. She watched the sky as they flew, dusk spread across the horizon. Could she really trust her mother? Then again they shared the same goal, to retrieve Nexie. The bigger question was what was Nexie doing here and why did she lie? Could Sam be right in she was hiding something about Godric from Alana? Alan's mind was filled with questions and unexplainable questions. Her mother seemed to sense her daughter's concern, "What's on your mind?"
"Why are you helping me?" Lillian was surprised by Alana's quick response.
"Why wouldn't I?"
"You have never liked me, never cared for me. So why now? Why is it you choose to help me?"
Her mother looked down at her hands and spoke, "Because for once you actually listened and may have a chance to still become the great mermaid you were destined to be."
Alana looked at her mother, she wasn't one for warm hugs and kinds words and Alana knew that. Alana knew this was probably the nicest thing her mother would always say to her and she took what she could get. The two stayed quiet until the plane landed.
Alana stepped off the plane observing her landscape, a runway platform surrounded by over grown grass.
Lillian snorted as Alana read the message out loud. "Anyways you ready? The car is here." The blonde mermaid made her way to the car. Alana watched as the driver checked out the woman in a white pantsuit that exposed her cleavage greatly. She slowly followed her mother hoping the driver wasn't doing the same to her ass which was covered by leather pants and a red see through blouse.
The two were on their way to the hotel when Alana felt a sharp pain to her rib and another to her jaw. Her mother jumped in fear as she saw black marks appear randomly and then quickly fade away.
"Alana! Are you okay?!" Lillian shrieked. She watched as Nexie's mirror released a red flashing light and showed her location. She knew exactly what was going on. Nexie was hurt and Alana could feel everything. She jumped up towards the driver, "Change of plans. Fellowship of the Sun, GO!"
Lillian tried to soothe her daughter as the pain got worse until the got there. Then all pain had ceased as if nothing ever happened.
"Are you okay to be go in here?" Alana nodded and quickly responded as she got out of the car, "It was the bond. Let's just find out what the hell is she doing in here."
With that the two Mermaids made there way into the church as a sea of women and children scurried out. They heard the blaring sound of a loud speaker as the "Great Reverend" spoke. The blue lights flickering in halls, the two mermaids smiled mischievously. Lillian looked at her daughter, "Got to love chaos."
"I'm glad we made in time for the show."
The both continued there way eventually splitting up trying to find Nexie as quick as possible. While Lillian checked the halls, Alana checked the sanctuary. She opened the door and found nothing. She continued running down the hall in hopes Nexie was okay, so she found herself cornered by various faces of the Light of Day Soldiers. She fumbled for her knife she kept in it's holster around her waist. A large red headed man grabbed her roughly by her arm, "What are you doing here?"
Alana looked at them frantically, "I-I was in the bathroom when I heard the sirens. I stayed in there until I gained the courage to run out and look for help."
"John just bring her where everyone el-"
"This bitch is with the fangers, I saw her walk in with that blonde woman." Alana shook her head violently, trying to play the innocent card.
As Eric fought the four guards, Lillian ran up to aid the viking by bashing the last victims head in the wall. "Northman, it's a pleasure to see you once again." Before Eric could respond he saw men about to enter the front doors of the church.
"Quick the Sanctuary." Lillian said. As Lillian's heels clicked against the stone floor, Eric eyed Lillian wonder why she was even there? Then it clicked in his mind, he saw as Nexie's face had dropped. Sookie pushed the doors open to the sanctuary to see the sanctuary littered with sleeping materials.
As Lillian looked around looking for Alana, Eric spoke to Sookie, "What way can we get out?"
"There is a back door." Everyone made there way towards the back exit.
"I wouldn't if I were-" Nexie was quickly cut off by Steve Newlin. "Several exits actually but the easiest one for you in straight to hell."
Alana rolled her eyes, "The comedic reverend everyone." She said in a sarcastic tone just as she was dragged in by the reverend himself with her hands bound together.
And as if on cue the room began to fill with men armed and ready to kill. "Nanie." Nexie said realizing her protector was here. Eric looked at Nexie who had a pokerface on, trying to close off any emotion she had.
"Let us go. Save yourselves, nobody has to die!" Lillian looked at blonde completely annoyed by here over dramatized outburst.
"The war has begun, you evil whore of Satan." A sadistic smile crawled onto Newlin's face as he continued, "You vampires cast the first stone when you killed my family. The lines have been drawn; You are either with us or against us. We are prepared for Armageddon."
"The prisoner you held captive, is a Sheriff. He's bound to send help." Alana was shocked by the fairy's revelation. Steven Newlin smiled sadistically as he gripped tighter on Alana's hair causing her to wince.
"I'm not concerned for Godric. Any vampire will do for our grand celebration, and we've got one right here." The reverend pointed towards Eric as the viking's face dropped. Nexie grabbed onto his arm before releasing it as he left her side. "I'll be fine" He said as he made his way toward the altar.
"Brothers and Sisters," Newlin chuckled, "there will be a holy bonfire at dawn."
As Eric laid on the on the alter, silver chains burning skin, Nexie was held back by Lillian. "You see?" He began. "Just as our Lord, our Savior was betrayed by thirty pieces of silver, a few ounces of silver can betray a child of Satan to the world." He manically shouted as if he discovered the cure for a disease.
Alana grabbed his hand trying to loosen the grip but failed, "No offense but that makes absolutely no fucking sense. Honestly if you are going to preach make sense. How can these people listen to you? I bet you got your degree off a cheap website, Newlin." With that he gripped her hair tighter.
"Eric managed to choke out, in hopes to spare lives, "I offer myself in exchange for Godric's freedom; As well as the girls'."
"That's very noble," Steve began as he probably rambling on and on about how it was his duty or some shit. Alana was so numbed by the pain in her heard she could care less.
As Bill ran in yelling Sookie's name, Alana saw her chance. "Honestly what do they see in you? Please some-"
She quickly made a move to escape his grasp while he spoke. Elbowing his ribs, he let go as he winced in pain. She ran towards the group of friends but was quickly stopped by a hard punch in the face. It came out of no where, hitting the side of her jaw. Nexie gasped as Lillian held her back tighter knowing Nexie would run to aid Alana and wouldn't stand a chance.
They watched as her fangs unintentionally released; Completely frightened, she was ganged up on. A group of arm men surrounded her each taking turns to fight her. She fought as hard as she could. Grabbing one of her heels she used it as a weapon. "MONSTER" they shouted as they had the upper hand and out numbered her. Eventually she was hit over and over again until she felt the cold silver metal wrap around her neck. She noticed Bill was watching.
Steve Newlin let out a scream as Jason shot him with a paintball gun after screaming, "Let her go fuckwad!" She watched as Jason was held by three guys.
Sookie quickly ran and ripped off the chains from Eric. Eric ignoring the group of hostile humans, quickly gripped Steve by the neck. "Don't kill him!" Sookie screamed.
"Kill him!" Jason shouted across the room. "Kill the motherfucker."
"Go on" Baring his neck to the viking, accepting his fate. "Murder us. Murder us before God! We are willing to die."
The sound of vampiric running was heard. The doors to the sanctuary blew open revealing Stan and his group of very angry vampire. Alana felt relived to see Stan, even though he was a complete asshole or so she heard. "Steven Newlin! You have pushed us too expect us to sit on our thumbs while you round up your men to come lynch us? We'll kill you first. Same way we did your father." He smiled as the guards unhanded Jason and backed away from Nexie, Sookie, and Lillian. Luke however continued to hover the stake over her as John held the silver chain.
"No.." Sookie whispered as Alana closed her eyes in disgust.
"MURDERER!" Newlin shouted after discovering the true killer of his parents. Attempting to stand, he was choked down by Eric's grip of steel.
"Destroy them. All of them." He ordered gruffly. Lillian held Nexie in hopes to protect her, Alana felt the cold silver chain become tighter around her neck. The man in front of her held a stake in hopes of to use her life as a bargaining chip in order for survival. She saw a vampire dressed as a cowboy come up behind the the man who held the stake up to her heart.
"Touch us and I will kill her." The man said as he pushed the stake in creating a small opening without to much force. He hoped this would ward off the vampires but for the cowboy it was a useless tactic. Coming up behind Luke, he grabbed him and was about to bite.
"ENOUGH!" All the fighting ceased at the voice of Godric's soft yet, superior voice. Standing at the top of the balcony, he looked down spotting Lillian and Nexie standing directly in he center of the chaos. His eyes were drawn to Stan that held Luke by his head, "I assume you came for me."
He watched as Alana was restrained and had blood seeping through her shirt. He also saw Stan was refusing to listen, "Underlining."
"Yes, Sheriff." Stan said angrily as Luke was frantically breathing.
"These people have not harmed me. You see we can co exist, Mr. Newlin. I do not wish to cause bloodshed when none is called for. Help me set an example; If we leave you in peace, will you do the same?
"I will not negotiate with sub-humans." He said vilely, "Kill me. Do it. Jesus will protect me." Sobbing was heard from a distance.
"I am actually older than your Jesus. I wish I could have known him, but I missed it." Nexie let out a snort at Godric's remark. Godric quickly made his way down towards Steve Newlin. Grabbing him by the collar he displayed the poor excuse of a reverend, "Good people who of you is willing to die for this man's madness?"
The room became still and quiet, everyone feared to speak out. Steve looked around frantically hoping for someone to speak yet, no one chose to do so.
"That's what I thought. Stand down everyone. People, go home; It's over now." Low murmuring took over as the vampires released the the humans from their grip. Alana was released from the chain and fell down to the ground, gasping for air. "Please don't leave me" could be heard faintly. Luke stared at Alana as Nexie ran towards her to quickly help her.
Godric pushed Newlin to the floor, "I daresay my faith in man kind is stronger than yours." Luke watched Nexie hold Alana. Alana looked up at Luke with no emotion, he threw the stake towards her and walked away. Alana stood up, still staring at Luke as Stan looked at her and made his way towards Godric, "Sir, after what these humans have done to you."
"Go." Godric said as he made his way towards Alana, only to be stopped by Eric, "You are in deep shit, Nexie. Go behind your watcher's back and avoiding any precautions. As your Supreme I could kill you for those broken laws. You will not make a mockery of our tribe, you are -"
"Mother." Alana said trying to cut in only to be given a stern look. Eric and Godric watched as Alana and Lillian went neck and neck once again.
"No, Alana. She is the heir to the throne, she has responsibilities to uphold. She almost got all of us killed over petty bullshit!"
"She's young, she didn-"
"She didn't what? She didn't mean it? She didn't understand the consequences of taking such actions? You were the one who called me, need I remind you? You are the one who couldn't find Nexie. You are the one who realized I may have been right about him, you are the one who let this get out of hand. I am going back to my hotel room and finding out what went wrong. You are be there as well as the Viking and Death."
"You don't have any hold over us. Only the king does. So as watcher of Nexie I will take over and punish her as I see suitable. Thank you for your assistance, you are dismissed."
"You cannot dismiss me! I am your supreme, I-"
"I said you are dismissed. You have no power here."
Lillian stared at her daughter for a long time with pure rage in her eyes. The room seemed to stand still until Lillian turned around and walked out the sanctuary doors. Nexie looked at her Watcher with relief, "Thank god she's gone am I right? I mean I know she is a hard ass, but damn she is a crazy one at that too."
Alana pulled her arm away from Nexie's grip, "I think it's time we all left this place." Nexie looked at Alana upset and nodded. Alana felt an arm circle around her waist, she turned her head to see Godric looking at her with a concerned look. She didn't need to say anything, she felt everything. She knew this night was far from over but, she wasn't looking forward to what was next to come. Everyone left the room, with many unanswered questions.
