Chapter 13: Blinded
"What were you thinking, Nexie! Do you know what you have done?" Alana paced around the room, while Nexie and Eric sat on the couch. Godric stood leaning against the wall, watching. He was angry that his child sent a human and Nexie into the church but, he knew that was a conversation for later.
"Look, I'm sorry. But we didn't know where Godric was- If you knew what we were doing, you would've flipped a shit just like you are now."
"Nexie, I don't think you see what you have done. Forget about lying to me and thinking you hurt my feelings." Nexie looked at her, trying to figure out what she meant. "You have the mark..." Nexie said with wide eyes, Alana's eyes moved down at her wrist to see the mark. She felt the burning sensation when she was in the car but now the mark was complete.
"You have broken several laws tonight. I may be your cousin but I am you watcher first and you fail to see that. I had to call in my mother because of this stunt you've pulled. Not only did you put your life on the line but, you put mine."
Nexie looked at her watcher, she saw the hurt but more than that, she saw fear. The mark was a brand on a watcher that is placed when you failed your heir. Once you had three, they emit a slow poison causing you to die a painful death. Alana masked her emotions and looked at Godric, "I assume you'll speak to your child." He nodded, knowing she was going to find out his motives sooner or later.
"Get your things, a jet will be taking you tonight. I've already called Sam and he will be watching you until I get home tomorrow."
"What are you going to do here?"
"I have to deal with my mother. Now go." She couldn't look at Nexie. She felt hurt that she would lie to her. She knew she meant well and wanted to thank her but she needed to be seen as an authority figure not a friend. Eric followed behind Nexie to give her a ride to the hotel.
Godric walked over to her, "Why did you go there? I know you weren't taken, Godric."
He sighed, "I've been alive for too long, Alana. I've made mistakes and I had a weak moment but now I am fine."
"Why would you do that? What about Eric, Nex? What about me? You have people that care about you."
He guided her to the couch, holding her hands with his he looked into her beautiful sea green eyes. "I know. I am sorry but I realized what I need to do." She gave him a questionable look, "I think we should stop."
She furrowed her brows, "What do you mean stop?"
"I don't love you, Alana. I was curious about your blood and who you are. Your kind is so rare and I just had to see it for myself." She teared up and shook her head, she looked at him hoping it was a joke. She couldn't believe it at all.
"What?" She managed to choke out.
"I respect our friendship but we can't be together. You were an experiment, that's all you were." She recoiled her hands from him and looked at him in shock. He had no emotions on his face.
"Did you ever feel anything for me?" She asked in a small voice laced with hope.
"From the moment I met you, you were naive. Just like you are now." She covered her mouth with her hands. She stood up and walked towards the door. She knew her mother was right, she didn't want to admit it but she was.
She took one last look at him, his pale face and dark hair had no emotion; his blue green orbs showed nothing. She opened the door and ran out in tears. She hadn't notice Eric walking past her, confused at what was going on. She walked on the side walk of the street, trying to figure out what to do next.
She sat on a park bench and watched as the city lights twinkle, it reminded her of Greece. She sat there for hours but only for it to seem like seconds. Soon she felt another person beside her on the bench. "Hey," She heard a soft voice.
"Hey Sookie.."
"You okay? I heard about your break up.." Alana looked at her in confusion, "Sam told me," She nodded, knowing she has texted Sam not too long ago.
She played with fingers and spoke softly "I'm fine."
"You and I both know, that's not true. We've been through enough for me to know you are not okay. So rant, let it all out." Sookie turned her body to face Alana. She had a look of concern for her friend and she knew Alana needed to vent it all out.
Alana sighed, "You would think by trying to please someone is enough, but in reality it only infuriates them more." She began to talk faster and became more passionate with her words.
"It's pathetic to think you can make someone instantly love you just by following their moral. In the end we lose ourselves, not them because in reality we never actually had them to begin with."
"You please someone out of love-" Sookie was quickly cut off by a raging Alana.
"It's not love, it's fear. Fear of having no one in the end. We fail to realize we come into this world alone and we all die alone. The biggest lost isn't being unloved but, by losing who you are as a person by trying to feel loved." With that the door was shut, that big elephant in the room disappeared. There was nothing but stillness and darkness. For the first time Alana felt lost.
Sookie grabbed her hand and sighed, "I know you are angry right now but trust me it will all work out and I know if Gran were still alive she would say the same thing."
The two stood up, Sookie pulled her in an embrace, "Come on, Bill and I can drop you off to your hotel room." The car ride was silent. Bill kept looking at Alana through the rear view mirror. He didn't know what Sookie and her talked about since, Sookie thought it was something he didn't need to know. He assumed it had to do with Nexie and her being there.
After thanking the two she went to the receptionist to ask what room her mother was staying in. She knew her things were with her, dreading to see her she knew she had to. Today had gone to shit and she knew it. The elevator opened up on the twelfth floor, walking down the hallway she knocked on the door.
The blonde was wearing a black office dress with her hair in an elaborate updo, "Alana, come in."
Alana nodded and walked in with the door closing behind her. She sat down on the couch as her mother poured her a glass of wine. The two stayed silent until she was given the glass and Lillian sat across form her.
"I have to say, even if you embarrassed me at that church, it's about time you grew some balls." She took a sip of her wine. Alana knew she had got some how into her mother's good graces and wasn't about to let that go.
"So, what happened after you dismissed me? I can tell it wasn't good."
"I spoke to Nexie and sent her home. She's under house arrest until I get there tomorrow, I'm having a friend, Sam, keep an eye on her until then."
"Ah yes. The Shifter, at least he isn't as bad as the others you've associated with." Lillian was shocked when she heard Sam's name. She deliberately sent the maenad there to get him and now Nexie was with him. She didn't like that but she knew the maenad wasn't after Nexie's blood.
"So, you've been gone for hours what else has happened?" Alana took a long sip as Lillian eyed her, "You were right. I let myself be fooled by him, he said everything you told me he would, so thank you."
Lillian knew she should feel happy but apart of her felt bad that Alana experienced that. Secretly, she hoped her daughter would follow her and learn to not be naive. That was always her down fall, she always tried to see the good in people.
"Well, I'm sorry it came to that but, it was for the best. I didn't want you to become your father, blinded by love. He may have gotten lucky and wasn't being used like you were but it is their nature."
Alana nodded. Lillian stood up and grabbed her glass from her daughter. "I know you are upset but you have much higher priorities. You are stronger than this, stop sulking and allow this to make you stronger. You are a watcher and I know you were marked, I will get rid of your mark if you promise me one thing." Alana looked at her mother confused.
"Don't ever put anyone before the ones you love and by that I mean Nexie not, some twilight brooding mess of a vampire. Understood?" Alana nodded and saw as her mark faded.
"Now go to sleep, your plane leaves at 9am." Lillian put the glass in the sink and walked into her room. The brunette stood there shocked by her mother's actions, she never expected to hear those words from her mother. She actually seemed to care in a strange way, she made her way into the bedroom and kicked off her heels. She went into the adjoining bathroom and turned on the shower hoping the water would wash away all her mistakes that night.
