Two Weeks and Counting

There's a time when the world around you stands still. Or at least, that's what it feels like to us. The people around you freeze and you are there all alone, nothing seems to matter in that exact moment, and we harness this feeling; Whether it be regret, remorse, love, anger... sorrow. But it's what we do next in that moment that truly matters. Once the world unfreezes yet, still harnessing that feeling- That's when we step out of that little bubble and into the world once again. That time, is your time. Now the question is, what will you do next?

"Wake up." Alana's eyes fluttered open, and the pool of sunlight poured in from the little glass window. Allowing her eyes to adjust to the sudden exposure she sat up and looked at the figure in front of her. "Mother?"

"We are here." She watched as her mother walked over inside the private jet and grabbed her from the table, "You fell asleep, again. You've only slept for what? 20 hours?" Alana chuckled as she stood up. stretching her mother turned around and handed her clothes, "Change in the back, I'll wait for you in the car." The mermaid's eyes slowly peered down to see her still in her pajamas. The plane door closed as Alana groaned and made her way to the back.

Ten minutes later she opened the car door to her mother's private car and entered. Lillian looked over her daughters outfit. She examined her beige colored silk blouse with 3/4 sleeves, skinny jeans and beige heels and smiled, "It'll suffice. Better than those rags you were sleeping in."

"They're called pajamas."

"Well, I prefer to sleep nude and with a hot latin man next to me."

"Ew." Lillian's face smiled as she cued the driver to go. Alana sat back as she opened her book and began reading.

It had been two weeks since they have found out about Nexie sneaking away and Godric's scandal. After sending Nexie home in the care of Sam and planning to take care of things and arriving home the following morning, her mother informed her that the king requested an audience. While her mother loved being waited and dined on as she lounged on the balcony over looking the water of the greek isles, Alana nervously paced awaiting what the king wanted. The king rarely called for her and this made her nervous.

In those two weeks all she could think about was Godric and Nexie. She had trusted Nexie and feared for her but was hurt and betrayed. Then, for Godric to hurt her in ways she never imagined, she didn't know what to do. It seemed like things were to good to be true at time, she should've seen it coming but now she had to endure it. She heard he was in town, resigning from his position as sheriff in order to spend time with his child. In some way she felt as if it was to taunt her. A constant taunt of how her mother was right and how naive she was but, she wouldn't allow that to happen anymore. She was a watcher and a businesswoman. Giving herself two weeks to wallow in self pity she picked herself up again and looked forward.

Late afternoon had fallen as Alana and her mother pulled up to the driveway of Alana's house. Lillian stepped out of the car as she ordered to have the bags placed inside the house. Alana sat in the car, exhaling and remembered her duties. "Are you going to sit in there the whole time?"

Her mother's voice pulled her out of her thoughts, turning she stepped out of the car and walked towards the house. Unlocking her front door she was met with a young girl reading one of the Harry Potter novels on the steps of her foyer. "Hey, 'Lana!"

"Who's child is that?" Lillian voice was filled with confusion as she stared at the young girl with long beautiful blond hair and vibrant green.

"Hi...?" Alana was just as confused and clearly her face showed that. "It's me. Jules."

"Julianna?!"

The girl nodded. Alana stared at her in shock as she saw the once four year old she saw merely weeks ago, stand in front of her older. "You don't look four anymore." She muttered as her mother stood their observing the entire thing. "That's cause I'm nine now or at least I think so."

"Oh."

"Yeah, Diana took me home so they wouldn't get suspicious. So I live here with you guys now."

"That's... awesome! One, sec." Alana stood there at a loss of words as Julianna smiled at her sweetly, "Diana!" The mermaid yelled as she stood there staring at the girl. Hoping for an explanation or some verification she wasn't going crazy. The next thing she saw wanted an even more of an explanation, Eric stood there in front of her with a worried look. He assumed something was wrong when he heard the yelling, her face became stern "Nexie!"

Within moments, Diana came inside from the back yard, "You're back!" And Nexie peered over the second floor balcony knowing she was in for it by the look on her cousin's face. Looking at Diana, and then Nexie she made her way to the parlor, "House meeting. Now." The girls looked at each other and made there way over. "Mother leave us. Northman get out." She spoke harshly as Julianna stared at the two who shared scowls towards one another.

"I'm Lillian Everdeen. Alana's mother and you are.." The blonde made her way over towards the young girl.

"Julianna. But you can me Jules or Anna." Nodding, she smiled as she heard the door close, meaning Eric had left. "Well, Julianna why don't we take you shopping. We can't have you in rags on my watch." The girl nodded as she followed Lillian, "Wait for me in the car." The blonde child nodded as she walked out the door, avoiding the heated discussion.

"Alana," The woman turned around heatedly, "I'm taking her shopping, just letting you know. So see you soon." Quickly Lillian walked out and closed the front door and smiled at the girl.

"Someone explain to me what is going on right now." The two housemates were silent. "Why is Eric in my house and why do I have a nine year old on my stairs reading when she should be four and in the hospital."

Alana's head turned to Nexie as she tried tried to reason, "He just came over to say hi and check up on us."

"Check up? That's what's Sam is suppose to be doing. Not Eric."

"Sam is a little held up..."

Alana stared at her cousin waiting for an explanation of why but she opted out and decided to speak to him about it. Turning her head towards Diana she asked calmly, "What happened with Jules?"

Diana shifted her feet and moved towards the chair, signaling for the other two mermaids to follow en suite. She exhaled and began reiterating the same story she told her other house mate not to long ago. "Valkyries. They are often seen as transporters of the dead. They take the souls of the fallen heroes and transport them to valhalla where the souls live in everlasting glory and happiness. Valkyries are also said to have many life cycles where they start from infancy, they grow up reach adulthood and then die and then restart like reincarnation except it's the same vessel."

Alana looked at her confused, "I don't get it. Why are we talking about norse mythology here?"

"Shit, do you have to be so dense? Anna is a valkyrie." Alana looked at Nexie, ignoring her tone and questioned, "If she's a valkyrie then why did she have cancer. Supes aren't sickly, we don't have the same genetics as humans."

Diana sighed and closed her eyes, "She wasn't sick with neuroblastoma."

"What?"

"Just hear me out," Diana pleaded and watched as Alana face switched from being confused to intrigued by the matter, clapping her hands to her thighs she spoke, "She was in the care of human parents who found her in her stages of infancy, when they noticed she was sick they ran tests and nothing came up. I don't know what happened but they just abandoned her at the hospital but then another doctor who was a fae learned of what she was and decided to keep her under the care of the hospital. Thinking she could collect the souls around her, thats when she started dying. Since there were no heroic souls around her she began loosing her hair, slowly decaying."

Nexie looked at the young fae as she shifted uncomfortably, "There's a lot of gaps and we won't know how she got instantly healthy but, rapid growth is one of the traits of a Valkyrie. So she grows up faster than a human child and then once she reaches the age of divination she remembers all of her past lives and gets her full powers. I couldn't just leave her in there, so I took her home one night."

"She stole a kid from ICU. What a badass." Nexie chimed in. "Wait, wait, wait," Alana shook her head, "So Jules is a valkyrie that was dying because she could collect souls and then one night she regains her health, ages about five years and won't remember anything until she reaches her age of divination which could be when she is 20 or 40 or even 50."

"Pretty much."

Rolling her eyes at Nexie she continued, "How do you know all of this? I've lived for 549 years and I have never heard of a valkyrie that actually existed."

Her two housemates stayed silent as they shared a look towards one another, "Eric, I'm assuming." Alana said which caused Diana to nod softly. Healing, she spoke, "Okay, we just have to take this one day at a time, then. I am jet lagged and I just want to take a shower."

"I'm making dinner, so come down when you are ready." Diana said smiling thinking it went better than she planned. "Okay, awesome. I'll text my mother to bring home Julianna soon." Diana nodded and made her way towards the kitchen.

"Nanie?" Alana turned around to see her cousin behind her, "I'm sorry. For everything. I just wanted to make sure that he was okay and I never meant to lie. I didn't think it would end up so bad."

"Nex, it's fine. I'm not mad anymore, but I don't trust him after this. Quite frankly, I don't trust either of you at this moment." Alana turned around and began walking up the stairs hoping to avoid her cousin's face knowing it would hurt her. She didn't know why she felt bad, she shouldn't feel bad. Her mother told her she had no reason, Nexie made her choices and endangered everyone and now she had to deal with the after math. As she opened the door to her bedroom, sighed and walked over towards her bed. Closing her eyes, she breathed softly attempting to take everything in.

She felt uneasy. She couldn't place a finger on it but, something wasn't right.
