Chapter 2: Two Best Friends
'Naruto said he wanted to be the hokage someday...just like Obito.'
Kakashi closed his eyes as he thought back to times before he was a jounin.
Kakashi was reminded of his teammate when he thought about Naruto. The boys shared a lot in common, more than he had thought. The similiarites were hard to ignore. Obito was such a moron sometimes. And so is Naruto - still. Looking back, he always knew Obito hated lagging behind. Obito loved Rin and didn't like it when Rin cheered Kakashi on in the sidelines. The brat had always been bitter. Was that why when he thought about leaving behind Naruto to train Sasuke he had also thought Obito being left behind? Somehow he didn't doubt it.
He blinked when he saw Obito come running to the bridge, out of breath.
"Hehe! Heya, Rin! ... Kakashi." Rin smiled at them - more specifically at Rin and not at Kakashi. "Hello, Obito." She said with a bit of blush on her cheeks. She had a piece of paper in her hands behind her back. She was hiding something.
"You dimwit! You didn't even get here on time!" Kakashi snapped "You're late as always."
"Hey! Don't scoff at me!" Obito growled. "I'll show you someday! One day you will acknowledge me!"
"So what if I do scold you from time to time? And why would anyone want you to be the hokage, anyway?" Kakashi asked shrewdly. "No one can take you seriously when you act all high and mighty. That attitude of yours will get you killed someday in the real world. The ones that bark the loudest don't bite at all."
Obito grumbled and crossed his arms. "Shut up! What do you know about me anyways, huh?"
"Kakashi! Obito! Come on, you two. Snap out of it!" Rin came in between them. She looked from one to the other worriedly. Reminding Kakashi of whenever Sasuke and Naruto fought, Sakura was always the one that came between them.
"Hello, guys." Minato came into the scene in a yellow flash. "Good news, everyone! We will be sparring today at the training grounds. There is no assigned mission at this time. However, I hope you are all ready for the upcoming chunin exams."
"Of course!" Obito smirked. "Just you wait and see!" He turned to Rin and smiled. "Watch me, Rin!"
"Do your best!" Rin handed him the piece of paper she was hiding. It had said : 'I'm always watching you. Love, Rin xoxo' Obito blushed.
"You did it! You're amazing, Kakashi! Isn't he, Obito?" She turned , but was shocked to see his back turned to her, showing the Uchiha red and white fan.
"Humph." Obito shoved his hands into his pockets and walked away. 'He always steals away the spotlight away from me. It's his fault Rin ! Well, I'll show him! I'll show the whole village what I'm capable of!'
"Hmm..." Kakashi stared after him in contemplation. Jealousy and envy were an ugly color on the boy. He wished Obito would see that he didn't need beat him . Rin loved him enough already. If only Obito could see that Kakashi didn't like her back.
"Obito?" Rin calls cautiously. But he had left.
"Take these three lunches. I hope you won't take too long?" Kushina asked hopefully. "We won't." Minato hugged her and let go with a wave. "Alright. Thanks
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever." She humphed. "Don't come crying to me about it. I don't want you to soak my shirt with your tears." She handed Rin, Kakashi, Obito, and Minato freshly made bento boxes. Obito stared down at his bento box hungrily and licked his lips. 'Yum yum! It smells delicious!' Once he opened the lid and steam wafted off of it, however, he chocked on his own spit.
"Hey! I hate vegetables." Obito wrinkled his nose in disgust. "That stuff is disgusting!" Kushina hit him on the head.
"You brat! You will eat your veggies! You are a shinobi and a growing boy! You need to eat your greens! How will you grow up properly without eating your daily dose of vitamins and nutrients?
"Then again, I suppose it doesn't matter, anyway. Your growth has already stunted. I mean, just look at you! You are still a good three inches shorter than Kakashi." She teased mercilessly. And she wasn't wrong. Obito's height - and weight - was smaller than his.
"H - hey!" He protested weakly.
"What? Are you scared that Kakashi is taller than you? Or are you scared because you are shorter than him?" she mocked with a smirk plastered on her face.
Kushina sighed and slumped her shoulders looking suddenly depressed. "Minato, I don't see what you see in that boy." She shrugged. "Obito, you brat..."
"I believe in him. One day he will surpass me and become the hokage. And you should believe in him, too, Kushina."
Obito stared at his sensei, dumbstruck. Minato-sensei believed in him? Kakashi smiled. He saw how happy he was at the moment and was pleased.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Minato-sensei accepted him! He was so happy!
"Now. Let's get going. We are going to be late at this rate."
"Goodbye! Take care! Come back home safely." Kushina called after them. 'You too, Obito...' She thought before she went back into her home. Kakashi smiled.
Kushina waved at them as Team Minato walked off out of the village.
Kakashi had charged a chidori through Rin's chest. He stared in shock, taken aback; taking in the severity of what he had just done. What had he just done?!
That was how Obito and him had activated the Mangekyou Sharingan; one in one eye socket and one in the other. Kakashi had killed his best friend.
It was the Mist Ninja, he remembered. All along it was their plan to kill her.
Or, at least he thought it was. It was Madara who controlled the Mist nin the whole time. He had planned her death. All so that what? Obito would help him? To destroy the Leaf?
Kakashi shook his head. He didn't want to think of Obito right now.
Not when all he thought about was when he had 'died' back then. Back to when he was crushed by a boulder...
When Kakashi was an Anbu, he had met Itachi. He was no longer with Minato-sensei, or Rin, or even his best friend and rival Obito.
Itachi was as smart as they said. A prodigy; a natural genius. He had loving parents who doted on him and were dear to him. He also had a devoted Izumi and his best friend Shisui. Kakashi never knew what it was like to have that; his own father had died, after all. But the boy was kind - kinder than anyone he had ever met.
Kakashi remembered him before the massacre. He wasn't a monster. He was human back then.
Even now, Kakashi remembered Itachi. To think the he was now with the Akatsuki. A cold-blooded murderer who didn't mind killings hundreds; if not thousands of people without emotion. But that was not the Itachi he remembered.
His student, Sasuke Uchiha, was his one and only hope. He would one day enact revenge onto his brother and avenge his mother and father. He would also revive and resurrect the Uchiha clan someday. Kakashi smile at that thought. He had a whole village of women who would nothing more than to become a Mrs. Uchiha, his student Sakura Haruno one of them. He wondered who would be the lucky lady to win the man and woo his heart.
He will need to teach him the chidori someday. His special technique couldn't go to waste. He hated to leave Naruto and Sakura out of the equation, but what else was there to be done? He was still their sensei so to speak, so it wasn't like he was going away anytime soon. Not on his watch.
'When the time comes...I will teach your son, Minato-sensei.'
Kakashi awoke, feeling lonely. He looked at the old photo of his sensei and smiled. Some things were worth living for.
Indra and Ashura. Madara and the First Hokage Hashirama Senju. Him and...Obito.
Would Naruto and Sasuke be the same in that regard? Always bitter rivals and on the opposite side of the war? They were always against each other, even now…
He hoped just because they were born to hate each other, they would learn to love each other in the end. He hoped Naruto didn't make the same mistake Obito did...He hoped he didn't drift to the darkness...he hoped he wouldn't die.
"Rin….Obito….Minato-sensei…." He stared up at the blue sky.
"I miss you."
