Chizuru giggled at the sight of a disheveled Heisuke when he hands the baby over to her. His haori had mud on them with the smell of puke mixing in. Long hair that once was in a ponytail now rested on his shoulders with some saliva mixing in on his left shoulder.

He took three huge steps back away from them. "That kid has brought nothing but trouble whenever I am assigned to him."

That made Chizuru tilt her head at him curiously. "And why have you said that? He's perfectly harmless." She asked, making silly faces at the baby. The babe giggled at her before his attention turned to his hands.

"Lets see, He brought unnecessary attention from very old ladies when I took him into town. After a moment of escaping them, He puked on me after I fed him which smells pretty bad." He looked at his right shoulder in digust. "I cleaned it up, then he decided to pull strains from my ponytail and attempted to chew on them."

"I..see.." She felt pity for him as he kept on relaying what happened.

"Then I don't know how it got mud on his hands…" He paused and immediately began stripping off his tops. Chizuru felt a blush forming and let out a stutter. "H-Heisuke!"

"It's not mud Chizuru-Chan! It's something worse!" Heisuke panicked, running away from the couple.

She didn't see Heisuke the rest of the day until dinner time arrived. From what Harada told her that Heisuke was at the lake nearby. He and Shinpachi was on patrol when they spotted him cleaning his tops. In between every scrub he would mutter about 'the smell won't come off' or 'It wasn't mud..'

Now Heisuke made sure he was with someone when watching over the baby. He didn't want to be the only one that suffered. Particularly, Sanosuke and Shinpachi since they don't really get to be close to the infant without scaring him or handling him a bit too hard In Shinpachi's case.

The baby was left in the care of Hijikata as of that evening. The vice commander was in the middle of doing paperwork pausing so often to check on the energetic babe on his futon. He smiled a bit when he heard the baby blabber on, discovering his feet for the first time.

The next time he checked on the baby, it was sound asleep with the cat. Toshizo the cat must of snuck in and entertained the baby a bit before laying besides him.

"I suppose it's time for bed.." He thought, gathering up his papers before settling the baby on it's own makeshift futon. It wouldn't be good to sleep with a baby risking it to be crushed, no Hijikata wasn't THAT much of demon.

Toshizo growled at him and curled up onto a ball near the baby, acting as the sleeping infant's guard.

Hijikata blew out the candle and went to bed. The sounds of baby giggles woke him up and slowly turned to the source. He saw Chizuru playing with him, but her eyes shows that she hasn't had much sleep. Nonetheless, she kept him entertained.

"Uh oh, where the dango go?" She covered her face with her hands.

"There he is!" She opened hands showing a silly expression on her face.

The infant giggled again very amused at the female demon's game of peek a boo.

Hijikata watched them, amused as she kept on with the game until he heard foot steps from outside his room. He closed his eyes pretending to be as sleep when she opened the door.

"Yukimura, I did not know you have him today." That voice belonged to Saito. It made sense since it was his time to look after the infant.

"Not really, He woke me up pretty early so I thought to play with him for a bit.." Chizuru gave off a yawn.

"Is that so?"

She gave a slight nod and handed the energetic baby that squealed in delight when he saw Saito's face.

"Dab ga wo!"

"Yes, Good Morning to you. Let's be off now." Saito responded and left. Soon after Chizuru retreated back to her room. Not before she gave Hijikata a kiss on the forehead.

"Thank you for watching him for the night.." She whispered to him, not noticing the slight pause in breath when she kissed him.

When she left, he opened his eyes and gave out a sigh. Maybe he should keep watch over the infant overnight if this was the reward each time he does.

He doesn't mind, but he do mind that the kiss brought butterflies in his stomach.
