Booth met up with everyone in the lobby of the hospital, leading them to the elevator, he let them know that Grace was in a private room. They talked for a moment, Booth acting as if the confrontation in the car had never happened, and they took the elevator ride up, and walked down the hallway.
Booth led the group down to Grace's room, knocking lightly on the door he heard her voice invite them in, and was immediately greeted by her smile. "Daddy." She said, smiling, she always had a smile for her father, and when the other men walked in, her smile faded a bit, but she still accepted her father's kiss to her cheek.
"Hey, baby girl. How did you sleep?" He asked softly.
"I slept fine." She lied, but there was no sense in making her father worry.
"Hey, sweetheart." Harding said, giving her a little wave, she smiled.
"Hey, Fitz." Grace said, waving to Aiden, she saw Shane and Chief Denna walk into the room, she smiled.
Shane ignored Booth's warning glare and walked over to her, he kissed her lips softly and sat beside her, and took her hand in his. "It's good to see you."
Grace stayed silent for a moment, accepting the kiss, and looked up at the chief. "Good Morning, Chief." She said. "It seems like I either have no guests, or everyone comes at the same time."
"Is now an okay time?" Booth asked, as he pulled a couple more chairs up for everyone, he felt bad for invading his daughter's privacy with so many people.
"Yeah, yeah." She said softly. "It's fine." She cleared her throat and pulled her hand from Shane's to scratch the back of her neck nervously, dropping her hand back into her lap, she sighed. "I um…I don't know what more there is to say about what happened." She shrugged.
"We just want to fill in some of the blanks, that's all." Chief Denna said softly. "Your dad and the FBI have lead on the case, and we're helping out with what we can. It's actually kind of a load off our minds, we want to make sure we catch these guys, and I think the crew over at the Jeffersonian is very capable."
"They can make a very solid case." Ace nodded.
"So you approached the vehicle." Chief Denna said, "And you spoke with one of the occupants?"
"Yes. One of the occupants was my cousin, Seeley." She said softly, glancing to Booth, who nodded. "The other three in the car seemed nervous, and Seeley just told me to walk away. I told him that I couldn't, and asked for license and registration. The driver looked about the same age, white with a tattoo of a snake on his arm." She sighed. "I got a pretty good look at him, but the passenger was wearing dark clothes, and it was hard to see… and I don't know if I could identify the other passenger in the back. I just don't know if…" She said, starting to get nervous, her eyes were pleading as she started to breathe a bit heavily.
"Come on, Grace, you can remember." Shane said, nudging her a bit, she flinched. "Just think about it a little harder."
"She's thinking." Booth growled, "Stop bothering her."
Grace looked between Booth and Shane and could feel the tension. She closed her eyes tightly.
"I don't feel well." She whispered.
"Why don't we step out into the hallway for a second." Aiden said, tapping on Harding's leg. He stood up. Harding nodded and stood up. "Hey, you too." Aiden said, pointing at Shane.
"Why? She's my partner, my girlfriend." He replied, his voice nearly territorial in nature. "I was there too."
"Yeah, to be honest, I'm not really convinced of that." Aiden shrugged. He could see Booth's head snap in his direction, but continued glaring at the officer. Shane stood up, walking toward Aiden in an intimidating manner, and Aiden stood straighter. He felt a lot more comfortable knowing that he was a good five or six inches taller than Shane, and resisted balling his fist. "We can stand out in the hallway, let the Chief and Booth talk with Grace." He said, glancing to her. "Is that okay?" Aiden asked Grace, who smiled slightly at him, and nodded. "Good." He said, holding out his fist to her, she smiled and gave it a bump with her own.
Shane tried to take another step toward Aiden, but he had already turned to walk from the room, leaving the officer standing awkwardly for a moment before he and Harding walked out into the hallway.
Once the three of them left the room, Grace took a deep breath, releasing it in a sigh of relaxation. "Feel better? Booth asked.
"Yes." She nodded. "Much better." She then looked at her boss and smiled slightly, and continued her version of what had happened.
In the hallway, Aiden leaned against the wall as Harding excused himself and walked down toward the restroom. Aiden closed his eyes and sighed, trying to calm a nagging uncomfortableness that seemed to be creeping its way into his mind. When he opened his eyes, he noticed that the officer was standing across the hallway, glaring at him. Immediately he regretted engaging Shane in a mild staring contest as it only encouraged the officer to step in his direction.
"What's your problem?" Shane asked, his voice low and deep.
"Are you serious?" Aiden asked, lifting his eyebrow, he scrunched his face up in annoyance.
"I should punch that stupid look right off your face." Shane growled.
Aiden was ready for a quip back, but considered his options, and decided that for the safety of those around him, and for the peacefulness for the patients in the ward, he would keep his mouth shut. He simply just took a slow, deep breath and closed his eyes.
"Pussy." Shane spat, as he turned and stomped down the hallway angrily.
Aiden opened his eyes to an empty hallway and a let the corner of his lip curl up, simply happy that he had made the right decision.
After about fifteen minutes, Booth and the Chief emerged from Grace's room, and Ace and Aiden approached them. Shane hadn't come back from his little tirade, and they all seemed all the better for it. They talked in hushed tones for a couple of moments, and discussed any further facts that Grace had uncovered, as she promised that she would be able to give Angela an idea of how to sketch the suspects, and she promised that any other details that arose, she would keep them apprised. They were about ready to go their separate ways, when Booth tapped Aiden's shoulder, and nodded toward the room. "She wanted to talk to you before we left."
"Okay." Aiden nodded, giving a half smile, he slipped back into the room. When he entered the room, she was sitting in her wheelchair, glancing at a magazine, her eyes lifted and brightened. "Hey, you wanted to see me?"
"Yeah." She said smiling. "Thank you for what you did." She said softly. "It was easier with just Dad and the Chief."
He sat down across from her and leaned a bit in, smiling. "Hey, it was no problem at all. Its stressful when you have a roomful of people asking you questions, demanding answers. It's just better to be with a familiar face when you have to talk about something like that."
"Also…" She said, biting her lip, as she tried to find her words. "Thanks for bringing my sister yesterday. She… she really doesn't like hospitals. I didn't expect to see her here."
"It was a long process." He laughed.
"She was with my grandfather when he had his first heart attack." She explained. "They were here to visit a family member, and they were in the stairwell because she wouldn't take the elevator. Oompa didn't do well, and was having chest pains. He died two days later."
"She didn't tell me that."
"She doesn't tell anyone anything, Aiden." She said, smiling. "That's what you need to know about her. If you ask too many questions, she'll just close like a steel trap. If you don't ask, she'll tell you eventually." She smiled. "It seems counterintuitive, but you'll never meet anyone else like my sister."
"I get that feeling." He smiled. "Looks like you have an admirer." He said, indicating the flowers. "Those from…" He thumbed the hallway, making a face, and she giggled.
"They're from Jack… JV." She said, smiling toward the flowers, he could see the little sparkle lighting up her eyes from just simply stating his name.
"Ah, yes. We met at your house that night for dinner, it was a brief encounter… and I believe he was wearing a blanket on his head and was chasing your nephews."
"Yeah, that's Goof." She said with a joyful laugh. "He was here at the hospital when I was brought in, and when I woke up last night. He stopped to see me this morning. He's been my best friend forever."
"Sounds like he's a really good friend." He said softly. "You're going to need a really good friend to get you through all of this, someone you can trust." His honest reply struck her as a bit odd, like he noticed something but didn't say it out loud.
"Yeah." She said sadly.
"Hey, it gets boring and lonely here not having anyone to talk to." He said, reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his wallet and tugged one of his business cards from it, handing it over to her. "Text or call me if you need to chat, okay?"
"Are you sure?" She asked, watching him smile, she brightened.
"Absolutely." He said, nodding his head, she reached her hand for his, and he captured it, giving it a little squeeze. "You can call me for anything."
"You're a good friend too." She said, "Thank you, Aiden."
"No problem, Gracie." He smiled. "I should probably get going. They're waiting out there for me." He squeezed her hand again and let it go, watching her eyes sparkle.
"Tell Antonia that I said you're a keeper." She said, laughing at his blushing cheeks.
"Now I really do have to go." he said, winking as he stood up and headed for the door. "Tell Jack that I said you're a keeper too." He said, and then quickly slipped from the room.
