Booth was pacing in the living room for nearly an hour before the knock came at the door. He opened the front door to Harding, standing in the swirling snow, the wind pushing hard against the house. He stepped inside and turned to Booth. "Neither car are at their places, Booth."
"So they're out there somewhere in this." He said, waving his arm at the door as he turned around and sighed. "I thought I raised her with enough sense not to go out into a damn snowstorm."
"The storm didn't hit until this morning. Maybe she got stuck somewhere, and Fitz is with her."
"See that, we don't even know if they're together. They could both be stuck in ditches somewhere." Booth grunted, sitting down on the couch, he rubbed his face with his hands.
"She's got Grave Digger, she's fine."
"I know that you and Toni think it's hilarious to refer to her car as Grave Digger… but it makes me feel a little uneasy." Booth said, watching the amused look on Ace's face.
"Come on, Booth. It's a monster truck! I don't even know why she got that thing. It's huge."
The door to the kitchen opened, and Temperance walked in with a cup of coffee in her hands. "Good Morning, Christopher."
"Hey, Doc." He said, gratefully accepting the cup of coffee she offered. "Thank you." He sighed and looked at Booth. "So, what are we going to do?"
"You're not going to do anything." Temperance said, looking between the two men. "The two of them are adults, and they made adult decisions. It's not up to you to risk life and limb in a snowstorm if you don't even know what condition they're in. Do you understand?" She said, watching as the two of them looked at one another. "Don't look at each other like that. I know what you're thinking, and if you do that, you're no better than Antonia taking off in the middle of the night when the storm was on its way. Just give the storm a little more time to calm down, it's not even dawn."
"We could get up to two feet of snow today, Bones." Booth said, watching as Temperance shook her head.
"She is an able-bodied woman, Booth. Aiden is smart and industrious. It's just too dangerous." Temperance said, glancing to Ace. "And don't you give him any ideas."
"What? I'm just… I'm just helping." He muttered.
"I don't need my husband, my partner, my daughter, and her partner leaving me in the middle of a snowstorm with Jared Booth."
"She has a point." Ace said, glancing to Booth.
"Your daughter and her partner?" Booth asked, lifting his eyebrows at Temperance. "Bones? Is there something I should know about Fitz and Toni?"
Temperance sighed and shook her head. "Not partner as in lover, Booth. I mean work partner. I think that they work very well together."
"But they're not… like, partner partners, right?"
"I don't know what that means." She said, sighing. "I think I need more coffee if this conversation is going to continue." Temperance said, turning around to head back toward the kitchen.
Grace could sense that someone was in the room. It was nearly sunrise, so early, and she had been awake on and off all night long. The presence was peaceful and silent, and she was pretty sure based on the time of morning who it was. She opened her eye slightly, just enough to get a glance at his curly brown hair.
"I saw your eye open." JV said, lips curling into a smile.
"Stalker." She said, opening her eyes, she furrowed her brow. "Why are you here? I thought it was your day off."
"Hospital called in extra people because of the storm. I'm on call, so instead of waiting around to drive through the hurriblizzarcane, I decided to just hang out with you… but you're sleeping, so you're a bore. Maybe I'll go home." He shrugged.
"You're not going home. You're going to stay here and entertain me." She smiled sleepily. "Also, hurriblizzarcane is not a word. It's a Nor' easter, an Alberta Clipper, or a polar vortex."
"All fine and good, but I'm pretty sure you made those words up too." He said, watching her scrunch her nose up. She smiled at him, and he smiled a little. "How is the pain?" he asked, suddenly serious.
She thought for a moment about saying she was fine, her answer to everyone's question about how she was feeling. "Physically or mentally?" She asked, watching him nod.
"Shoulder?"
"Hurts a lot." She nodded. "Ankle only hurts when I move it."
"Head?" He asked, leaning forward to touch the side of her face. He watched her tenderly.
"The bump is painful sometimes, sometimes I get a headache. Inside my mind though…" she shook her head and closed her eyes.
"Hurriblizzarcane?" He asked, his voice completely serious.
A slow smile lifted on her lips and her eyes opened to watch his. "Yes."
"I told you it was a word." He said, poking her nose with his finger, she scrunched her face again, and grabbed his hand.
"Jack, are you going to be here all day?" She asked, watching several emotions cross over his features, she squeezed his hand. "I don't want to be alone in here."
"Then you have me all day." He smiled. "I brought a book, snacks, a couple of games…I'm ready for the long haul. I'll only have to step out if they need me upstairs, and you can sleep then." He said, smiling at her though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Jack?" She sighed, feeling emotion stirring in her throat, and her eyes were burning a little. "How are you feeling?" His eyes darted to her, and she knew that she had caught him. "Are you okay?"
He seemed relieved that she'd ask, and for a moment he almost just brushed it off and made a joke, but he could see the sincerity in her eyes, and the concern. "I was really scared." He said, swallowing hard. "When they brought you in, I just felt like someone was ripping my heart out. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't… speak." He took a slow deep breath.
"You couldn't speak?" She asked. "You must have been scared."
"It's not funny, Grace." He said seriously, watching her eyes focus on his. "You are my best friend, Grace. You and I have… we've gone through so much together, we are more than that… I am just… saying those words, best friend… it sounds stupid, and cheesy and it cheapens it."
"But you are my best friend, Jack." She whispered, watching as hot tears rolled down his cheeks, she could tell that this was ripping him apart. "I saw you, Jack. When they brought me in." His eyes had strayed, but they were on her now. "I was trying to talk to you, but they had that oxygen mask on me."
"What did you want to say?" He asked, watching her face as she let go of his hand to rub the tear out of her eye, he grabbed her hand and wiped the tear for her with his thumb. "What did you want to say?"
"I told you not to leave me. I told you that I didn't want to be alone, that I was scared." She whispered. She watched him for a moment, his eyes sparkling as he looked into hers. "I told you that I love you, Jack." She whispered. "You've kept your promise." She said. "You've been here every step of the way, Jack. I love you."
"I've always loved you, Grace." He said, "I'll never leave you." He stood up and leaned carefully over her, dropping a soft kiss on her lips. He looked into her eyes and smiled. "How is your head now?"
She smiled, "It's much clearer now." She said, leaning up slightly, she kissed him back.
