When they got to the subdivision, it was clear that there had been no traffic down the road throughout the day. They wondered if anyone was staying at any of these houses, and only managed to get about a mile down the road before the snow made them stop. They didn't want to get stuck, and obviously had no idea what they were getting into. The snow had stopped, and the sky had become clear, which only made the cold air more biting. They climbed from the SUV and moved toward the trailer.
Parker grabbed a bag from his seat and followed his father and Ace. "I have some night vision goggles, and some headlamps for the helmets." He said, watching as Booth gave him an amused glance. "What?"
"You and your gadgets." Booth said, laughing as Parker grinned.
"I also have a high range walkie system, so if we go in different directions, we can still communicate." He said, pulling a radio from the bag, he showed Booth.
Ace was in the trailer, working to unload the two snowmobiles. He started by handing off helmets to Booth and Parker. They helped him to get the two machines from the trailer, and let them run for a few moments as they determined how they would proceed. "We're going to take this slowly." Ace said, speaking over the sounds of the motors. "We don't know why they're not back, so there's no saying what type of hazards we'll run across." He said seriously, watching the other two men nod.
"Are we talking like trees in the road, or that the suspects found them and are holding them hostage?" Parker asked. Ace and Booth exchanged a glance, and then both glared at Parker. "Hey, I'm sorry. It was just a question."
"Mostly trees in the road, but now you're making me re-think not wearing my vest, so thank you for that." Ace replied.
"For that remark, you get to ride shotgun, and I'm driving." Booth said.
"Aw! That's not fair, Dad! I brought the gadgets!"
"Yeah, well you also ramped up our anxiety level, so back seat for you, kid." Booth replied. He handed him a helmet, and climbed onto his snowmobile, as Ace did the same. He looked to Parker, who shook his head. "Come on, it's not getting any earlier out here."
Parker sighed, handed Ace one of the radios and zipped his pack and put it onto his back. He then put the helmet on, and jumped onto the back of his father's sled, holding on tightly. He tapped him on the shoulder, and Booth took off, with Ace right behind him.
Antonia continued to lean over Aiden, watching his breathing as his chest lifted and fell at a slower pace. His eyes were closed for a moment, and he focused on taking deep breaths. His lips returned to their natural pink. She was quiet, but for her hand gently running over his arm as she watched him breathe. She could feel her eyelids drooping as her exhaustion threatened to take over, a yawn on her lips as she shook her head to try to knock the sleepiness out. She glanced to the fire, and knew it needed another log, but she couldn't bring herself to leave his side. His eyes opened and he looked up at her, watching as her eyes closed for a moment before her head jerked up with a gasp and her eyes went back to him. "Rest." She whispered, "Close your eyes and rest."
"You're a good partner, Tex." He said, watching her fight another yawn. He lifted his good arm, running his hand across her cheek. "Rest against me." He whispered. "Just rest your head. It's okay, please?"
"Every time I touch you, something goes wrong." She whispered, standing up slowly, she moved away from his hand. She moved to the pile of wood and grabbed another two logs, and tossed them onto the fire, poking the fire with a long stick as she glanced over at him, noting that his eyes were still on her. "You should be resting, not watching me."
"I can't help it." He whispered.
She turned and walked toward him, sitting down on the side of his good shoulder, she watched his eyes as they implored her. "You make me extremely aware of myself." She said softly.
"Self conscious?" he asked, watching her shake her head.
"Just aware." she whispered.
"Come on, right here." he said, tapping his shoulder. "Keep me warm, Tex."
"I think the fire is keeping you warm." She said coyly. "I think you just want me to fall asleep." She smiled.
"Would that really be so bad?" He asked tenderly, smiling as he watched her settle down beside him, very carefully placing her head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arm around her. "There you go." He whispered. "That's nice."
"It is nice." She said softly. She listened to his breathing as she rested, careful not to lean too much on him. She closed her eyes and started to drift off. Her thoughts were interrupted by a low growling sound that wasn't coming from her companion, and she lifted her head slowly, turning it.
"What is it?" he asked, noting the alarm in her glance.
"I hear something." She whispered. "Do you hear it?"
"Just my heartbeat in my ears right now." He said softly. "Wait…" he paused. "Is that a motor?"
"A snowmobile." She said, carefully lifting herself up, she leaned down and kissed his lips tenderly. "I think we're going to be saved." She whispered, her eyes glittering excitedly as she carefully stood up. She glanced to the two suspects as they slept, and made her way toward the door, to see if the sound she was hearing was real, or just her imagination. She stepped out onto the porch. She listened as the snowmobiles passed, knowing that if she shouted they would miss her. She also knew that it wouldn't take them long to get to the trucks and the tree.
She took a step off the porch, and waited until the sound of the motors stopped, then took a deep breath and called for Deuce.
The two snowmobiles rode tandem down the snow-covered road, moving slowly and methodically, they could only see one or two residences on the way, and the road seemed to go on for a while. The snow was deep, but they made their path slowly with the headlights gleaming far enough into the distance that they could see an impediment in the road. Booth lifted the radio to his lips, pushing the button. "Tree, Ace."
"Got it, Deuce." He said into the radio, as they slowed just as they reached the large tree across the road. They stopped beside one another and turned off the motors of the snowmobiles. They put the radios into a compartment on the snowmobile, and the three of them climbed off. "This must be where they got stuck." He said, taking the head lamp from Parker, he climbed up onto the tree as Booth and Parker slowly made their way through the deep snow with their own headlamps on. He stood on the tree and looked out, noticing immediately that there were two lumps covered in snow. One was at an angle, obviously in a ditch, and the other was just three feet from the tree, but completely covered. "I see the Grave Digger." He said, jumping into the heavy snow quickly.
"Ace, could you please stop calling her truck that!" Booth said, feeling a sharp anxiety in his chest, especially considering that the truck was covered completely by snow. He watched Parker jump over the tree and follow Ace, but stayed on the side with the snowmobiles. "Any sign of them?"
"No sign." He said, as Parker and Ace started to clear the car off, pushing the snow away from the driver side window, Ace spied the two cards. "She was safe when she left." Ace said, watching as Booth gave him a glance. "Deuce of Hearts and Queen of Hearts." He tapped on the glass.
"Are they bent?" He asked, watching as Ace looked at the cards.
"No. They're pointing that direction." He said, pointing toward Booth, and down the road.
"Parker, check Fitzgerald's car. Make sure he got out okay." Booth said, knowing that the younger man would have no problem climbing onto the car to look inside. Booth was standing, looking down the road, when he swore he heard the sound of someone's voice. He turned toward the other two. "Keep quiet for a second." He said, forcing Ace and Parker to stop moving around, he listened again, and he was pretty sure that he heard her voice. "I hear her." Booth said, walking toward the snowmobiles. "I have the radio, see if there's any way you can get Grave Digger free!" He shouted as he turned the snowmobile on, jumped onto the seat, and took off as fast as he could down the road.
"I thought you didn't want us to call it that!" Ace shouted, watching as Booth's headlight disappeared into the night.
