Distractions

When Kagome had mentioned the tickets, Gohan had expected decent seats. Probably somewhere, where they had a good view and the possibility of catching a few wayward baseballs. But the box seats went way beyond what he was expecting. They had a great view of the whole field. Goten and Trunks were fascinated by the whole experience. And each of the boys was even more excited at the buffet of delicious smelling food.

But despite all of this, Gohan remained distracted. Since they had gotten to the ballpark, Kagome had been acting…weird. She was quieter than usual, had barely said a word on their walk to the stadium, letting Trunks and Goten's nonstop chatter fill the silence. And she didn't even seem to be following the game.

Once he was sure Trunks and Goten would remain glued to the window, he took the purple haired boy's seat besides his classmate. Unsure of what to do, he hesitantly spoke, "Pretty good game, yeah?"

"Mmm-hmm," she replied listlessly, gaze still focused on the game.

Gohan resisted the urge to face palm and persisted in trying to get her to open up. "I've uh, never been to one of Yamcha's games before."

Her only response was a brief nod of her head. Losing confidence, he tried again, "So, since we're going to the carnival after this, is he coming with us?"

She still didn't look at him, but she finally did give a proper response. "He'll be busy with the team for the rest of the night, so it'll just be us."

"Oh," he quietly replied. An awkward silence settled between the two and Gohan began to get even more anxious. He was such a bad friend. He hadn't known it was her birthday and something was obviously bothering her, but he had no idea what to do. She knew a lot about him, but he virtually knew nothing about her.
