As usual (well, when he wasn't busy with Saiyaman duties), Gohan waited for Kagome outside her building so that they could walk to school together. He was eager to see how she was doing. She had been exited to spend some time with Yamcha, and he hoped that had cheered her up. He still felt guilty about not knowing about her birthday, and he wanted to remedy that.
Hearing the door swing open, he looked up and had to rub his eyes to clarify what he was seeing. For lack of a better word, Kagome looked…horrible. Her clothes were a mess, her hair was in disarray, and there were heavy bags under her eyes.
"Hey," he weakly spoke up, unsure of what else to say. She morosely returned the greeting. And before he could stop himself, he asked, "Are you okay?"
"Never better," Kagome saccharinely replied, mustering up enough effort to smile. Though it did more to unnerve, Gohan than appease him. Reluctantly he let it drop, and Kagome said, "Let's go."
"Yeah," he unsurely spoke.
The whole day, Gohan carefully watched Kagome. She seemed to be in an entire different world, and spaced out through all of their classes. In gym, where they were continuing to play volleyball, she was nearly knocked out by a ball spiked her way. And he had hastily offered to walk her to the nurse's office.
He tried suggesting that she should go home, but she seemed adamant on finishing the day.
