Chapter 13
Harry nervously flattened his hair against his forehead.
"Harry you are going to have to start explaining something because I don't understand anything," Sirius said pleadingly.
"There-" Harry started.
Sirius cut him off, "Don't you dare say 'there is nothing to explain'!"
Harry flattened his hair again while Sirius gripped the paper harder.
"Sirius, I know that you care, but honestly, there is nothing to discuss," Harry said with a sigh.
Sirius looked back at Harry with a hard look that made Harry want to squirm.
"Define care," Sirius said.
Harry looked confused. "What do you mean."
Sirius waved his hand, "Just describe to me what care means to you."
The younger man stared at the convict in disbelief.
"Sirius I know what care means."
Sirius gave him the hard look again. "Indulge me."
Harry rolled his eyes. "It's the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something."
Sirius nodded, "Very good, now how about an answer that would differ from Hermione's."
Harry scoffed. "That was a great answer."
Sirius gripped the paper harder. "So basically caring is making sure somebody survives."
Harry nodded.
"Alright, define love for me."
Harry gave Sirius a look. "What are we girls?"
Sirius stared right back.
Harry huffed. "Love is when you care for somebody."
"So what is the difference between love and care?" Sirius asked.
Harry frowned. "I guess there is no difference."
Sirius leaned forward. "So do you think, because you survived with the Dursley's, they love you as much as I do."
Harry stood up. "I'm not doing this."
Sirius stood up just as suddenly.
"Sit down," he said firmly.
Harry slowly sat down and looked out the window as Sirius ran a shaky hand through his hair and took a deep breath.
"Good now that we have calmed down, answer the question."
Harry felt the opposite than clam, his heart was racing and he was sweating.
"I know the Dursley's don't love me! I know that I was unwanted there! I get that! I'm not delusional!" Harry shouted at Sirius.
"Who, do you think, were the first people to love you?" Sirius asked calmly.
Harry gripped his armrests and breathed heavily. "My parents I would assume," He said snottily.
"Who do you think loved you after they died?"
Harry stood up again.
"What the HELL are you trying to prove!"
"Who loved you, Harry!"
"I DON'T KNOW!" Harry screamed at Sirius.
"How do you not know!"
Harry glared at Sirius. "I don't know! I don't know! Not all of us had great childhoods. I didn't have great role models. The Dursley's didn't contribute to my definition of love."
Sirius looked out the window. "The first time I knew what love was, I was a first year with your dad and Moony."
Harry looked at his godfather and sat down again.
"I was sitting on the train on the way home and your dad and Moony told me that they didn't want me to go and that if I ever needed anything they would come and sneak me out of my home."
Sirius looked at Harry.
"They knew my family hated me, and I hated them. They knew that my family would torture him if he ever got caught sneaking into a Black's home. Yet there they were willing to risk it, for me. The thought made me warm inside. I started to cry and they comforted me the whole ride home."
Sirius looked at his hands.
"That's when I knew what love was. It took me eleven years to find out what that feeling was. I always thought that my childhood wasn't that bad until I met other children and heard about their parents and their homes."
Harry looked at the floorboards.
"Ron."
Sirius looked up while Harry's eyes focused on the floorboards.
"Ron was the next person who loved me. He had no reason to like me, yet he stuck with me. Even when he hated me, he wanted to help me. He is like my brother."
Harry laughed. "You know last year, when he was mad at me he still told me about the Dragons."
"I thought Hermione told you," Sirius asked cautiously trying to encourage Harry's new openness.
"Yeah, Hermione loves me, but Ron told Hermione to tell me, 'cause we weren't talking."
Sirius smiled and rolled his eyes. "Of course."
Harry snorted and then frowned. "I had been running away from home for a while now, but I would always come back. It was after I meet those two I decided I didn't deserve the Dursely's. I had more important work."
Sirius froze and in a casual voice stated, "You had been running away."
Harry didn't notice Sirius' expression.
"Oh yeah. Since I was a lot younger. I decided the streets were a lot better place than the Dursley's. If anything I should thank the Dursley's for their treatment. Most runaways don't last long but I am used to going without. I was able to make some friends that I got to teach some tricks of survival."
Sirius choked, yet Harry didn't notice and continued.
"I remember the first time teaching Ly how to treat a gunshot. She definitely thought I was going to die, but I was fine of course. Nobody ever really believes I'm fine." Harry trailed off and looked at Sirius.
"Wait…wait..Hold up. What was this about a gunshot?!" Sirius explained halfway into a panic attack.
"No…No! Sirius, it's all ok! See its nothing more than a scar now." Harry said frantically lifting up the corner of his shirt near his right hip, trying to calm his godfather down. In retrospect, Harry knew it was a bad call.
"Harry what is that long pink scar," Sirius said in a whisper pointed towards the scar on his abdomen.
Harry whipped down his shirt, looked out the window, and nervously started to flatten his hair.
Sirius but his head in his hands and took several deep breaths.
He was getting no more out of Harry today.
"Alright, Pup. I think we both could use a break, let's go get something to eat."
Sirius helped Harry up and they both headed towards the kitchen.
"You know, no matter what you can talk to me. No matter what you say or do I will love you."
Harry looked into Sirius' eyes searchingly and then nodded.
"Oh and pup, just forewarning, Remus is in there and he seemed to know less than me about the Dursley's."
Harry sighed.
"The joys of having a family pup!" Sirius said as he ruffled Harry's hair as he walked in.
Harry gave a weary smile.
