The air felt tense enough that Homura could physically feel it as if it was something tangible in the room. The fan above spun slowly and the sheet curtains partially covered the windows, streaks of light shining through them and onto the long table in the room as the room was mostly dark and dim. Most of the students that Homura saw here earlier were gone, the files spread out earlier on the table placed in the room's filing cabinets. All except for Minami, whom was sitting at the end of the long table with a tired and drained expression, were present.
Tezuka Mamoru, a boy with chin-length dark green hair, sat with crossed legs and a smug look on his face as he was nonchalantly carving a piece of wood in his hand with a chisel. He had a bit of a feminine aura to the way he carried himself and Homura noticed that his refined manner of speaking had a bit of a foreign accent to it. Although he still looked Japanese. His back was facing the girls and Minami was the first to notice the two at the door.
She gestured them to take a seat at the sides before turning back to the boy, rubbing her temples and praying to whatever deity she believed in for the energy to continue speaking, "As I was saying. It's been nearly 3 months since I made you and your friends the new Freelancer club of this school. From the reports I get, you four are doing doing worse than the previous group and have been doing more harm than good," she took out a bottle of water from a bag at her feet and downed all of its contents.
Homura looked over at the boy and noticed that the smug-expression on his face wavered momentarily. He cleared his throat and replied in a diplomatic fashion, still not putting down the piece of wood and chisel in his hands, "Again, it's not like I haven't been making up for all those damages. Most of them were not our fault to begin with, if I remember correctly. Do tell me if I'm wrong."
Minami stood up and went to the filing cabinets to take out a bunch of files. She threw them onto the table with a noise that made Yuri jump and began reading them out clearly one by one, "'Hacking of the school's cameras, picking fights with the other clubs, blackmailing others to submit fake enlistment forms, drenching the auditorium in water', and that's just today's incidents. Setting the school lab on fire, damaging school property, and the list just goes on, Tezuka."
Mamoru placed down his things to take one of the files and read it quietly for a few minutes before closing it and sliding it back to Minami. He tented his hands together and stated, "Not everything we do always happens because of us, Morikawa. You do realize how the other students treat our club, correct? Not a day goes by without someone ridiculing us. But I suppose the Student Council is too busy to even notice that," he mused with a smug grin crossing his face.
Placed her face in her palm, Minami took in a deep breath and sat back down on her chair, "Alright, Tezuka, I'm just going to get straight to the point. What I'm trying to say is that your club hasn't been doing anything to help the school or its image improve. We made you guys the new Freelancer club because the Principal thought it was a good idea for some reason, but you guys just do nothing but cause trouble. I know the Principal and Miss Narita thought it would have been a good thing, but honestly, I've been thinking of shutting you guys down."
'Miss Narita', Homura thought. The name sounded oddly familiar to her, but she lost her focus when Mamoru suddenly slammed his hand onto the table, showing momentary anger that startled Yuri until Homura placed a hand on her head to comfort her.
Mamoru's voice turned low and serious, "Do not even think about that, Morikawa. My friends and I may be creating trouble, but at least we keep to ourselves for most of the time and we our job when we have to because we don't want to disappoint Miss Narita nor the Principal. That Gym Club has been pestering us more than the other clubs and that's why I chose to blackmail them. It would also make things much easier if you would allow Hideki and Tateyama into the school's representative team."
Minami and Mamoru locked eyes with one another and the room began to feel even more tense as the two glared at each other. It felt like any moment now, the two would have continued their shouting match and Homura would have to intervene somehow. Waiting for the two to calm down, Homura watched on while Yuri sat quietly beside her with fidgeting hands.
A moment of silence before Mamoru calmly fixed his uniform's collar with both hands, adjusted his sleeve and put on that smug smile on his face again. Getting up from his seat, Mamoru excused himself in a prim and proper order. He had seemingly switched from angry to smug in just a few seconds as Minami kept glaring at him, "Now then, was there anything else you called me for? Tea? Coffee? No? Then I shall take my leave. I shall pay for the damages, once again, and next time you call me over, do make sure it's something important," Mamoru turned his glance over to Homura. The boy looked like he recognized Homura from the park, but said nothing instead and simply ignored her. Opening the door and leaving in an orderly fashion, he left with his chisel and wood in his pockets.
"Well," Sanbey spoke up, poking his head out of the bag, "He seems a bit uptight."
As if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders, Minami subsequently sunk into her arms on the table and let out a loud, muffled groan that went on for 5 seconds. She slammed her fists into the table and moaned in annoyance as Homura got up and walked over to her, "That guy is just soooo hard to deal with... Goddamn it... Why do so many of the Club Presidents have to be such uptight jackasses?!" she looked like she was going to flip the table over, but chose not to and reached for a metal canteen in her pocket instead.
Homura took a seat next to the frustrated Council President and offered her a bottle of cold water from her bag which the Counsel President graciously took, hesitantly putting away her metal canteen and downing down the entire battle like just now, "You seem to be in a dilemma," Homura bluntly pointed out.
"Yeah, kinda' obvious," Minami huffed, closing the bottle cap and tossing the bottle into a recycle bin nearby. She glanced over to Yuri who was still siting quietly on the sidelines and leaned on the table, asking, "Yuri, have you shown her around?"
"Y-Yes, Sister," Yuri quickly nodded in affirmation.
"Good girl," Minami smiled for a bit and stretched her arms out before laying back on her seat to relax. She stared up at the blandly-colored ceiling of the room and switched back to Homura, speaking flatly with a tone of self-depreciation, "Not really a good first impression of the school, huh?"
"Somewhat," Homura nodded in agreement, running a hand through her black hair, "It's now how I remembered how this place used to be."
"You've been here before?" Minami piqued.
Homura placed her holster bag on the floor and coiled her fingers around each other, continuing, "You may say that, although it might be the fact that I never really pay attention to my surroundings for most of the time if it was nothing important. The last time I was here, I only talked to a few people. Not that I mind. I preferred it that way, most of the time."
"Well, things have changed. Especially since that new Freelancer club started," Minami stood up from her seat and looked out the window behind her to see the students running outside on the track field. She opened up the curtains to let the light flow in and the sudden change stung her eyes for a moment. She leaned on the windowsill, saying, "Man, do I regret allowing them to start in the first place."
Homura crossed her legs and began relaxing in her seat, "What is this 'Freelancer club' in general?"
"A club that does whatever we ask them to do, whenever we ask them to. But when we're not asking, they do whatever they want," Minami waved a hand as she explained, as if trying to remember their purpose in the first place, "I'm guessing you haven't met them in person, yet? The 4 have a long history with each other. The school nurse is one of their guardians and is also close friends with the principal. Since these guys are known for having problems with the other students, the principal thought it was a good idea to put them in one club," she then laughed bitterly, "Boy, was that a bad idea."
"I see."
Sanbey crawled out of Homura's bag and hopped onto the long table, stretching his paws. A knock on the door came and Yuri quickly got off her seat to open the door, revealing one of Minami's council members standing in the door way, "May I come in?" she asked and Minami nodded. The council member took a seat in a chair far from the two and inquired, "Have you thought about it, yet?"
"He's persistent on not shutting down. But I bet he's got enough leverage and reasons to use if I intend on shutting them down completely," Minami groaned.
"You can't seriously be thinking of letting them run along," the council member protested clearly, "If they need to be under control, why don't we send someone to watch over them?"
Minami laughed hysterically a bit and curled her purple hair around her fingers, "Who's crazy enough to watch over them? Let me list them out for you if you forgot: a smug, rich kid with a father who has deep pockets, a moron that can shoot an apple fifty yards away without looking, a hot-headed kid with a tone more dry than a desert and a quiet, creepy, tech-freak that once emptied a quarter of the cafeteria's food in his first year. Who in the right mind would think of being with them?!"
Minami was stressed, her calm attitude that Homura saw this morning was gone for the moment. The council member looked down on the table, thinking for some answers while Yuri went behind her older sister and tried calming her down by patting her on the back. But then, Homura had a look of realization, as she saw this as her chance. A chance to get a good look at her targets and fulfill her mission.
Standing up from her seat, Homura spoke up and volunteered without any hesitation in her calm, monotone voice, "I may be willing to do it."
Yuri and the two seniors slowly looked at Homura who still had her calm expression present on her face, and a smile crept onto Minami's face
Walking in the hallway that lead to the club rooms, Homura, Yuri, and Minami stopped in front of the Freelancer Club's worn-out door and Minami mentally prepared herself for another encounter with their club leader. Minami also took a mental note to actually send someone to fix this door that looked like it was going to break any moment now before she knocked on the stale wood and waited for the door to open. She impatiently tapped her foot on the floor, Homura stood beside her calmly and Yuri just kept fidgeting.
There was nothing but silence.
Minami then took a step back and gestured Yuri to do what she was told. The younger sister stepped in front of the door and exclaimed, "Fujimaki, my sister is giving out free ice-cream!"
"What, free ice-cream?!" an excited voice from the inside exclaimed as three electrical locks were heard being deactivated on the other side of the door. It sounded more than what Homura had heard this morning. The door quickly opened to reveal Takuya standing in the doorway as the call for food had brought him out easily, " Did I hear that right?"
Minami promptly kicked the boy in the stomach and sent him crashing into the long table behind him where Hideki, Tateyama and Mamoru were nonchalantly sitting. Hideki was listening to a music player while covered in bandages, Tateyama was typing on his computer and Mamoru was shaving the piece of wood he had earlier with his chisel. Takuya quickly got to his feet, rubbing his painful abdomen, but looking as if he had been merely slapped lightly. The boy was tougher than he looked.
"That was for drenching my sister and the auditorium," Minami said in a cold manner.
Hideki, who had his feet planted on the table, glanced over to Tateyama beside him and said, "Told ya' it was Minami outside the door."
Tateyama muttered a curse under his breath about some bet they had going on while Mamoru, who still had a small chisel in his hand and a piece of wood in another, gave Hideki an order to help up Takuya. He raised a curious brow at the three's sudden arrival and spoke in his formal and refined tone, "Was there anything else you wanted, Morikawa?"
"Yeah. This," Minami took out a folder and threw it onto the table, the folder slowly slid pass all the junk on the table surface until it was in reach of Mamoru's hand. The club leader flipping the file open with a hint of curiosity, Homura stepped forward the moment Minami quickly declared her next announcement, "From now on, she, Akemi Homura, will be your Supervisor."
