Kuwabara found himself drawn to the area where Urameshi had lived. He wasn't sure why, because Urameshi wasn't there anymore. It wasn't like they could run into each other. Impossible as it seemed, those days were over.
But even though Kuwabara knew that, he still went. That's why he was in the area to hear the desperate shouts.
"Fire!"
Kuwabara followed the shouting and smoke to the apartment that was engulfed in flames, and he was stunned to realize that the apartment in question belonged to Urameshi. Fire billowed from burst windows and covered the doorway like a curtain.
"I can't believe that girl ran inside. She's crazy!"
Kuwabara snatched ahold of the guy's shoulder. "Did you just say there's someone in there?"
"Y-yeah. Some girl ran in there a few minutes ago, but she'll never make it out."
Kuwabara let go of the guy, swearing under his breath, because going anywhere near that apartment would be completely insane. But no one else was jumping forward to do anything about the girl trapped inside.
My blade will defend the helpless.
Kuwabara ran to the door, ignoring the shouts from the crowd behind him. Just as he reached it, the flames changed. They curled in on themselves, curling away from the door, and suddenly Kuwabara could see a clear path to the girl standing in the living room, a limp figure leaning heavily on her side.
It's Yukimura!
Kuwabara didn't stop to wonder at the fire's strange behavior, he just rushed to the figure's other side so he could take most of the weight off of Yukimura and they could get out of there. Once outside, others rushed to help. In the midst of the jostling, Kuwabara finally saw the figure's face, and let out a choked gasp.
It was Urameshi.
